  • Sissoo crotch wood serving platter. This piece started off as a bowl, but because the heart wood didn't go deep enough to make a bowl I made a platter.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after RUclips started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Slight design change on this project! I started out making a bowl, and ended up with a platter.

Thank you very much Sarah! The wood is still a little wet, so I'm going to hang on to it for a few weeks. I was going to sell it but I would to make sure it doesn't crack. I'll let you know when it's really, before I put it up on Etsy.

Good save on the project and it turned out awesome. After letting it set in the mineral oil for a couple of day do you wipe it off and let if fully dry or do you do some buffing? I get a lot of wood off Craigslist. Woodcraft also sells bowl blanks.

Hi Carl! Thanks for all the videos. I'm a new woodturner (since December) and have learned a lot from you.
Are you going to stay in Boise though the 16th and 17th for the "Idaho Artistry In Wood" show? It's hard to tell how good it might be. Their web site (www.idahoartistryinwood.net/) doesn't have a lot of info yet, but it seems like the thing might be more of an art show with a few demonstrations than a woodworking / woodturning conference.
I might see you at the Boise Woodcraft. I live in the Bay Area but have friends in Boise who I visit a lot, and I might be there in March.

Thank you Laura! I wish we could stay for the Artistry In Wood show, but we have to come back for the Oregon Woodturning Symposium. It looks like a fun event maybe next year.

So I didn't know what crotch wood was, and had to Google it. But it looks like it's walnut? Ahh it's Sissoo wood... 😁

    Could you turn a cone?

      Is it for something specific?

I don't think so. My neighbor has a woodshop but he doesn't have a lathe. I spent about 2.5 hours with him working on the cone. It was made with a makeshift belt sander jig from an octagonal prism. Why did I want a cone made? Because I wanted a cone. I'm thinking a wooden cone could be made much quicker with a lathe than a makeshift belt sander setup.
