  • In this video I turned a piece of Maple burl for this pump grind pepper mill kit from Wood River. I finished it with 15 coats of CA glue. This is a great turning project for beginners.

    Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
    I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after RUclips started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

    As a retired Engineer it is very satisfying to see some one remove a chuck from the headstock as it should be. Thanks Carl.

    I had not seen this kind of mechanism before. A lot less work than those big mills that you can use as bats, and the burl looks beautiful. Also, I never considered adding that many coats of CA finish - I need to give that a try sometime. Thanks for sharing, Carl!

    Subscribed. Thanks for the tip about removing you chuck. I have a Jet 1221VS lathe with a Nova G3 reversing chuck and it has to last me for awhile while I save up for a Laguna 18/36 or even a Robust American Beauty. My next lathe will have to be my last. Give Jet to my wife. She said yeah right. Told her how many wives can say their husband gave her a jet? Nice job on the mill. Beautiful burl and finish!

    Nice burl! I've made close to 50 of these in the past few years and would strongly recommend taking the bottom part (where you fill with pepper) off before gluing the mechanism. Doesn't take much epoxy to slip down and glue it in making a mess. Just a thought.

    Nice pepper grinder Carl. Have you ever used Micromesh pads to finish CA. The grit goes up to 15000 and it gives a glass like finish on my pens when I use them. Cheers, Huw

    The grinder came out great, but in order for viewers to learn the most from your videos it would be most helpful to be able to actually see the cutting tools that you use and to view how they are interacting with the wood during the shaping process.

    Hey Carl - What tool we’re you using in the headstock? You mention putting a cone over a spur center. Is it just two 60 live centers?

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  4 года назад

      The cone on the head stock side screws on to the spur center. A live center on the head stock wouldn't work.
