Excellent video. The precise drilling instructions are valuable for this specific item (Crushgrind mill) since it does not come with instructions. I'll start on my first set of mills today, and will order more.
Here are the instructions for the crush grind kit: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/woodturnerscatalog.com/cdn/shop/files/crush_grinder.pdf?v=15420847510062144402
Loved the video. I turned out 6 sets for Christmas presents. I found a useful tip on the 3rd or 4th set; that is boring a hole in the mill part from the bottom end with a 3/16" x 8" drill bit. Seems to speed up the process of boring through the maple.
I enjoyed the video and followed instructions to make my own mill. One question...at what stage is the tenon removed from the top of the body. This is used for all of the bottom-up hole machining and the body then turned around to fit on jam chuck and revolving centre for finalising profile - but you don't mention removal of the top tenon (see video at 5min 9 secs. Thanks
Hello, congratulations, excellent your project, I loved it. I am from Portugal, I am a manuals teacher and I would like to carry out a project with my students, a salt or pepper shaker identical to yours. Could you tell me where I can buy the inner mechanism of the mill? I'll be very grateful. Compliments
Thanks for the feedback. Drilling speeds are very slow, 400-500 RPMs. Turning and sanding is much faster, somewhere around 2,500 RPMs. Hope that helps!
The video does not show the removal of the chuck tenon from the top of the mill body. Please confirm the best way to do this with the live center in the tenon. I am new at this. I really appreciate this video.
Good observation. When turning the mill body to shape at 5:27, we rolled a half bead at the top of the mill body, essentially removing the tenon. Please give us a call at 1-800-551-8876 if you need any assistance with your projects. Thanks.
Ok, now it is time to make a Video of a "Snap-in" Crushgrind mechanism using a shaft of PVC. This enables one to use the snap-in mechanism and turn an identical mill as the shaft mechanism. I have made 4 of these and they work as well or better than the shaft. Note: It is technically different than making the shaft mill, but not more difficult, just different.
Do people normaly coat the inside of the wood grinder? I want to make one but I'm worried that there would be wood dust mixed into the seasoning. How can I make it work?
Start by selecting a wood that's not prone to allergies. As for the inside, you can clean out the debris with some sand paper, then wipe it clean with a rag. If you want to coat the inside, spray some sanding sealer inside and let it dry before you add any seasoning to the mill. Here's a link to the Sanding Sealer. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/42/2405/Masters-Magic-Sanding-Sealer
I know this is 7 years old, but I'll be a beginner to turning soon, can these be made with carbide tools as well? Yeah I expect some pros to get on me about carbide.. oh well.
Awesome video, quick question about the finishing method. How long you let it dry between coats? I understand it will depend upon temperature but I noticed that it feels dry to touch within a couple of minutes.
Great question and sorry for the late response. We typically recommend letting the 50/50 Deft dry for about an hour or until it's dry to the touch. If you do have the time, letting it sit overnight won't hurt. The drying process allows the Deft to harden in the wood fibers, creating a barrier that prevents oil finishes from penetrating the wood.
I am using your crush grind mill kits and love the product. I have turned two mills where the mill is slightly shorter than the rod in the mechanism. I have cut the rod to shorten it but can not get the cut end flattened enough to stay in the grinder. Any suggestions on how to repair this? I keep hammering the end on a vice but so far no luck.
It looks like the 1 1/16 bore doesn't support any parts. Could you make it 1 1/8 instead. Much easier bit to find. Sorry for the remedial question, I am new to turning and project building.

Good grief.. 1-1/16, 15/16 and 1-9/16 bits?? Who designed this thing, could have made the parts 1-inch and 1.5 inches so we don't have to go out buy these odd drill bits.
I agree. Could never understand why these sizes were chosen. I had to order a 1 1/16 bit off amazon. Imported from Asia and the bit shaft won’t fit the ⅜” Strongbore holder. It’s too big. Their manufacturings tolerances don’t measure up. Would have been way simpler to go with a more common 1” size which can be sourced from virtually any tool retailer made by higher quality manufacturers.
Looks like a good video. I have in the past purchased crushgrind mechanism from your online store. There were fine. Until I reordered about 13 sets, and all of them the top Friction pieces would hold the shaft. I tried adjust the shift with a hammer. No luck. Oh also the adjustment know in the bottom , for coarseness takes two hand and a tool of sort to unlock. So they useless for me and a waste of money. Very disappointed , I sure the the kits where better than woodcraft's. I was wrong. So dissatisfied

The brand is Crushgrind, you find them at every store in europe that sells woodturning supplies.
Great video. I will make it my next project. Thanks.
Should you apply cellulose sanding sealer to the outside or just a wax or oil finish?
Food and epoxy....marvelous idea..oh my

Do you also sell coffee mill type grinders that fit on top of a container. Cause matching sets in that would appeal to me.
that was great, easy to understand. Nice joc

Why are drill sizes on this video differrent than on the instuction sheet?

This is a good video for the crush grinder with shaft. How about one without the shaft?
It's on our list of videos to make :)
Hi Mike. Is it necessary to seal or oil the inside of the mill barrel?
It's not necessary to seal the inside, but you can if you'd like.
Can you tell me what the forstner bit sizes are in mm please as im in the uk
Could you tell me what is the correct code of the mill to buy kits for the project shown in the video?
Crushgrind 10" is 1012630001 and 18" is 1012630002. Here's a link. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/53/1264/CrushGrind-Mill-Mechanism
Nice job! What is the paste wax you used? Jim Johnson

Unfortunately the 1-1/8" bit will not work. The stopper registers in the 1-1/16" hole in the mill body.
Thanks for your response.
Sorry it took so long.

good job
Amazing,greetins
forstner bits in 16ths are hard to find. Can I use a 1 1/8", 1 ", 1 1/2 " and a 1 3/4" instead?
Unfortunately no. These kits require precisely drilled holes.
Nossa, esse é lindo, forte e prático, muito bom, como eu faria pra adquirir um, comprar um, gostei.
Why does you use a jam chuck rather than just using the jaw chuck on the inside diameter?
The chuck jaws we used would not have fit the recess in the peppermill. However, that would be a good option if you have the appropriate jaw size.
Is that deft lacquer you're using?
What does undercut mean? Getting rid of some of the middle wood?
What drill bit extender is shown here? Can you provide a link?
It's the Apprentice Drill Bit Extender. Here's a link. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/76/4611/Apprentice-Drill-Bit-Extender
Thank you!
No problem :)
Owesome video 👍👌
lol, i thought you are going to make the crusher mechanism also

no, in fact once most products have cured they are food safe.
