Beautiful... makes me wish I still drove a stick shift.. (almost). Love your work & videos. I'm a senior who has never done anything like this. (not considered ladylike in my youth) So even though I barely know a spindle gouge from 120 grit, I'm learning. Love the camera work, & angles, & the fact that there is not a lot of useless chatter, you just get on with it.!!! now I'm going back to watch more videos.
In this video I turned a gear shift knob out of a resin blank I got from Zac at NVWoodwerks. I turned the Walnut and Maple gear shift knobs on a live show, and waited to put the CA finish on for this video.
Well done, Carl. I've done a few resin gear shift knobs, but I actually cast the insert into the block and use a bolt with the head cut off as a mandrel... kinda like turning a bottle stopper.
Thank you so much for your comment at about 4:40 - to slow the lathe way down to like 50 rpms when applying medium CA glue. I am finishing a pen with CA for the first time and was getting ripples. I've been watching videos like mad trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with others!
beautiful work! im a luthier and I finish my guitars with tung oil and CA glue. It little trick when you are water papering, put a few drops of washing up soap in the water.
Hi Carl. Very interesting and it looks like you achieved a fantastic finish. Definitely one to put on my project to do list. Great to see you using good old Yorkshire Grit - ee by gum! Cheers. Andrew
Vaya, Carl! Dejas en claro que no hay horizonte en el torneado. Realmente quedó de mil maravillas. Felicitaciones. Abrazo desde Montevideo - Uruguay. Sorry for my English.
Carl, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge . Your videos are very educational. I do have a question regarding the CA glue. Do you wear any type of safety gear to protect yourself from the vapors? Is that why you have the dust collection hose set up next to your tool rest?
Thank you so much John! Yes you should have a well ventilated area when applying any finish. I usually have the dust collector on and it's being pumped outside.
Hi, Carl When you buffed; did you put anything on the buffing wheel ... cream or cutting paste or ... !? Or was it just a clean buffing wheel? Great job. Thank you. Best ... William (Hampshire UK)
Thanks for this video Carl. I have a question. If you want a finish so brilliant as with CA on bigger pieces, whats do you think is the good way to do ? Sorry for my english... Mother Language is french
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have one question: After the first three coats do you cut it back with all the micromesh grits as well? Thanks
Your welcome, thank you so much for the response! I made a gear knob for my brother's car from Lignum Vitae and finished it with CA like in this video. It came out great, but at the end I noticed a spot at the very top had become dull. So I probably sanded it too much. :( Ah well, it's a learning process, right? So my next question is: Is the CA strong enough if it's so easily sanded off? What if you wear a ring while driving for example. Will it scratch the CA? Thanks once again. Grt Robin
@@CarlJacobson you have any tips for useing the ca glue on wood resin projects? i tried useing a thin ca glue but its like it didn't go on there correct.
@@CarlJacobson, at minute 6:05 (based on my count roughly 120 rpm). Sorry, not meaning to be a problem but I can see how you're doing it and I love your work. You just point out that high speed is unnecessary. I usually run at close to top speed and I like to see that's unnecessary. Plus high speeds tend to want to burn the micro-mesh, so you're right to point out not to get carried away.

I still drive one! I’m gonna have to turn one for my car :)
wow that looks amazing. I think I would have completely glued myself to it.
Hahaha...Thank you!!

It looks like you've got that C/A finish lined out. Both shift knobs look amazing. Thank you for the shout out.Regards,Bob
Thanks Bob! And Thanks for all your help!!
WOW! Those all turned out great, and you did a fabulous job with the CA finish. Thanks for all the plugs and sportin' the t-shirt too =D
Thank you buddy :)

Thanks Erik! I'm glad it helped!!
They both look superb Carl. great video my friend.

Thank you :)

Hi William! Thank you!! I think I used the White Diamond compound.
Very nice Carl.
Alan
Thank you Alan!
Really nice Carl! I think my 98 Ford Ranger needs a new gear shift knob!! :)
:) Thank you Terry!!
Nice job Mr C. Just need the mustang now take care. Paul Liverpool.
Thank you Paul :)
How about a flat surface? have you given it a try? or do you have a procedure to work one?
I like the alumilite gearshift better, I'll have to ask Zac what he embedded in it. Great job!
Hey Brad, it was that piece of wormy wood I sent you to stabilize with the cholla. No clue what it was though, got it from Deranged Donkey on IG
Thanks for this video Carl. I have a question. If you want a finish so brilliant as with CA on bigger pieces, whats do you think is the good way to do ? Sorry for my english... Mother Language is french
Thank you David! You can use the same process on bigger pieces too. I've seen people use a CA finish on bowls too.
This is an excellent video and will help my with ice cream scoops. Did not look like you were sanding with micro mesh at 1000 though.
Thank you! I think it was 1000 grit cloth sand paper.
So you sell the knobs without thread inserts, then you insert them after the sale. I really like the casted knob. Thanks
I think that's the way to go, but I'm working on finding a good place for the inserts.
for the one you did the CA glue on, what grit of sanding did you have the piece before you started coating?
I sanded up to 600 grit.
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have one question: After the first three coats do you cut it back with all the micromesh grits as well? Thanks
Thank you Robin! Yes I cut it back, but be careful you don't want to sand off the CA.

What speed do you run your Beall buffer wheels?
nice one carl !!! i really need to try some epoxy thanks for sharing again !!! did you have get the olive that i send you ???? you didnt tell me !!!
if is not came let me know so i try again !!!
Thank you buddy! I haven't gotten anything in the mail. When did you mail it?
How many coats of CA glue did you do total
Probably 4 or 5
very nice
Thank you Bill!
I have to try this! what size blank did you start with?
I started with a 3" blank for the resin one.
How is the dust collection hose attached to your banjo?
It's my patented velcro strap lol
Carl,
Did you put or can you put the CA finish on the resin one as well?
I've seen some people do it, but I didn't on this one.
Thank you. I will give it a try.
I have a question every once in a while the finish on my pens seems to spiderweb and crack do you have any tips for that?
Hi Juan, I haven't had that happen yet I'm not sure what causes it.
Did you use anything on the buffing wheel?
I used wax on the wheel
What type of chuck is that called at 0:47 that you mounted the blank to?
It's a expanding MT#2 mandrel www.chefwarekits.com/duck-call-game-kits-118/ez-duck-call-5-8in-expanding-mt-2-mandrel-woodturing-kit-made-in-the-usa-860.html

How can i turn one that would fit on my truck shifter?
Here's a website that could probably help you out getting the right size.

Tres tres beau....
Merci beaucoup!
How did you put the threads in the gear shift knob? Wooden one is beautiful, but I would never turn the other one.
Here's a link to the live show where I put the threads in,

What do you do to protect your late from all the water?
All Robust lathes are stainless steel, so you don't need to worry about it :)
Sorry, I thought you were putting out videos to help all turners, not just Robust users. My bad.
Make sure you dry it off after you turn green wood or wet sand. A little WD40 will help too.
It would be a big help tell what brand of clear epoxy to use and where to buy
Zac used Alumilite resin, here's the link. amzn.to/2yKdJ6Q
A beautiful gear knob but it looks too big to me, I don't think I could get my hand around it.
Thank you John! It's is pretty big
Well poop, now I want to turn a nob for my 68 Ford F250... if I can get the old one off at least lol
Ya that was the hardest part...lol
Ha I was tuning the lathe at 3000 rpm to dry it
muito bom

That is not 1000 rpm. That's maybe 100.
