  • In this week’s woodturning video, I'll be turning an oak bowl in two stages, the roughout bowl and then the final turning after the piece has dried for a few months.
This wood was cut down recently and had some amazing spalting in it….and of course a few bug holes.

Good job Robert. I haven't tried the twice turn method yet. You make it look easy. Oh,and Harry needs to get more involved. He sleeps too much.

I know it was probably the camera angle but in the first part of the video it looked like you had your fingers on your left hand in a dangerous position.
I was doing some wood turning a few months ago and something happened and caught my little finger and my ring finger between the tool rest and the wood. It mashed my ring on my little finger almost flat. I grabbed a pair of cutting pliers and cut that ring off before my finger turned purple. Got it off, no problem. I just learned you can never be to careful.

Not boring at all. Very nice bowl. Turning it twice worked out well. Great job.

Skilful turning. A pleasure to watch. What is the make of the bowl gouge set you are using ? And what diameter ? It would be fun to watch you create some Xmas ornaments for Harry.

Looks like you did all the work on this one. Did not see Harry doing much of anything (except nodding). Better assign him more chores!

Very nice bowl. I’ve noticed you are using a mortise on the top of the bowl to initiate the turning. Have you found that practice to result in a more centered bowl when coring?

The main reasoning I do it that way is to allow myself to have full access to shape the outside with a push cut with the tail stock out of the way. I could technically use a worm screw but I'm not a huge fan of those.

Yeah, I hate it. It comes from the vacuum chuck I use during the turning and when I speed up footage it gets pretty annoying. Sorry about that!

Beaver must have been worn out. Seemed to be sleeping through most of the video.
