Woodturning some of the coolest Spalted wood I've seen !!

- I've had this half Ash log lying around in the workshop for a couple of years, it has some really cool spalting and I wanted to try and show it off. I thought a Natural edge winged bowl would look good and I could keep the original shape but it was not the easiest thing to turn, with the wings to deal with and it being an end grain turn ..

😂
Some times I want to scream stop, your shaving all the beauty away, but then I stop and tell myself, nah he's just enhancing the awesomeness of the piece the deeper he goes. ❤️❤️❤️
I some times scream the same thing lol 👍
I cannot wrap my head around the part where you thin the wings - seems impossible to do (and not overdo it), but you somehow manage to stay in control - love your work!
Not sure how much I like the result, but the concept, the craftsmanship, and that stunning spalted grain are amazing.
Beautiful. To me, it looks like it's covered in a hydro dipped painting of a map from a fantasy novel.
Thanks .. It is a crazy piece of wood 👍
Had my new wood flooring done in a spalted maple, because I love the Spalting so much. Same with your bowl. Beautiful.
It's always good to watch an Andy Phillip video before logging out.
Not sure where you were headed at the beginning - but that's why you're doing and I'm watching! 😂 Love the spalting in this piece!
That was so freaking cool, and that spalting really does add to the appeal of the piece's appearance. Just WOW!!! Thanks for sharing the creation of another unique piece of art.
Thanks Lynn
I was afraid that the wings would go flying any time soon. Spaltet wood is not the strongest and the wings are across the grain 😬 but everything stayed in one piece! What an awesome result
Took me most of the video to figure out what you were going for, but when it came together -- wow! One of the most remarkable pieces you've ever made. Cheers and thank you!
Cheers Adam 👍
It turned out differently that I thought it would, and it is truly gorgeous!
Thanks
I love that you added a third dimension to this piece. Now I can throw my boots on and head to work.
It looks like an old map. Gorgeous!
I am always impressed by what you can see in a piece of wood that one was particularly beautiful ❤🏴
Hello Andy,
I always start watching your videos,( rubbing my hands together) thinking... "Right where is he going with this 1. And man you've done it again. Lovely piece of wood, beautiful grain. And i thought you were making a giant letter T.
Love your work!!!!
I’d happily jettison something from my shelves to make room for this! Beautiful piece, as always. Thank you, Mr Phillip.
Thanks Jane
It's definitely different, that's for sure. Beautiful wood too. Now you have a place to put your eating utensils, and/or side dishes lol.
It looks like a captive bowl a-like the tree grew around the bowl and you just showed us where it was hidden. Pretty cool!!
What a creative, beautiful piece! At first I was like what is he doing. LOL but it came together beautifully, and I agree with everyone that's spaulted wood is just gorgeous.
Andy, thank you for sharing what is, possibly, the nicest turned bowl I've seen. Admittedly you had some help from Mother Nature, but you treatment of the piece is superb.
Thanks David .. mother nature was the boss I just went along for the ride 😂
Wow you were not kidding on the spalting on this one. It is a masterpiece of nature on full display
Take care my friend and enjoy the trekking
Cheers Andy
Harold
Those sharp corners you left on the tips of the 'wings' are sure to be an enduring joy to the owner every time they get bit by one of them.
It takes a large set of stones to wood turn an airplane propeller. You never cease to amaze me my friend!
🤣 Thanks
I knew I should’ve taken shop back in HS. Incredible work. Love the videos
Thank you!
Very cool, Andy! Great way to handle an oddly shaped piece! 😄
Phil
Cheers Phil .. I liked the shape and the spalting so I thought the best thing to do would be to whack a bowl in the middle ..lol
I really love the look of the wood grain. It is so beautiful. I wish it was mine when you are finish. Again I wish it was mine.
Can feel the vibrations from this one in my noise cancelling headphones. Lovely stuff
Ваша работа завораживает. Очень хочется посмотреть до конца и увидеть , а что же получилось? И всегда замечательный результат. В руках волшебника простая деревяшка становится произведением мастера!!!
Thank you for the inspiration. I have similar pieces of wood lying around and never knew what to do with them.👍🏼
I love white ash, it's so pretty!
Wow. You’re right. The spalting is amazing.
Very cool; you could mount it on a wall with an electric candle for a one-of-a-kind sconce. Gorgeous piece of wood, creative form, ended up a very unique, special piece. Nice work.
Good made to loo easy I got lot to learn
A very unique piece…wasn’t sure where it was going but then Wow!
Thanks
Even though the wood is cool it is your creativity and craftsmanship what makes the piece truly outstanding.
Thanks 👍
Beautiful, the end result reminded me of a butterfly with open wings!

I just love spalted ash. Very beautiful Andy.💖💖💖
Thanks Connie
Hi Andy WOW what an amazing piece of wood love the spalting grain it's fabulous. The winged bowl is fantastic what a brilliant idea loved watching the transformation, it really is another unique plece of woodturning done by yourself. You are a clever woodturner and you have good craftsmanship skill. Thanks for yet another fabulous video from Amanda xx
Thanks Amanda
O’ my lord, that’s grain is in another level.
You worked it to perfection 👍
What a gorgeous chunk of wood. Had a pretty crazy cut on it tho at the start lol
Stunning piece of wood: Fantastic avant garde shaped piece!
I love the spalted wood, it gives so many tones and patterns. It's a shame you don't have the other half of the log to make a mirrored pair of bowls.
My first thought was how deadly those flailing wings would be if a hand or wrist went askew. Good thing you're a professional. ;)
Yes, the spalting is beautiful, but I'm truly impressed with the elegance of that form. Love the way the bowl is "rising" through the wood, it enhances the natural beauty.
Very nice piece. I love working with spalted woods as it makes things look really different.
That turned out just great and what a grain in that piece. WOW
Dang that is beautiful! Love all of it, the design, the spalting, i can appreciate the sanding time involved. Thanks for posting.
Excellent! I like the wings, cool idea.
This is so beautiful! It is one of my absolute dreams to be able carve wood as beautiful as that!
So beautiful! It looks like a map
Thanks
Simply gorgeous. Another piece very well done.
Thanks Kimberley
Hmmmm...🤔🤔🤔... can't decide if it's amazingly beautiful, or beautifully amazing. Either way I love what you did.
😆Thanks Brad
Maddest piece yet!
Awesome pice Andy. I think what you do is great. I have the same lathe as you, it was a dream come true when I brought it, after some health issues I won't bore you with watching this has made me want to get to the bottom of my log pile and have a go. Thanks for the video pal, as always pure excellence. 👍
Thanks David .. Its been a great lathe, does everything I need 👍
This piece has an Art Deco or 1960’s vibe for me…..another beautiful creation ❤
Just gorgeous!!!
Absolutely beautiful!!
That is one gorgeous piece!!!! I love it! Well done
A stunning and beautiful work of craftsmanship on an incredible piece of wood!! You have this wonderful sense on when to stop so the wood shines through your artwork!! Stunning as always Andy!
Thanks Chris
this wood looks like a old ancient map :o
so cool, even a flat piece would be an awesome wall decoration :D
Wow. That was amazing. I’ve never seen wood like that. Lovely b
Absolutely beautiful. You are a true artist.
While I really don’t like the winged bowls, I love the coloring of the wood.
WOW! Amazing piece with phenomenal spalting and grain.
This has been my favourite to watch. The wood looks like a tree map. Just wonderful!
Thanks
It looks like an ancient weathered sea chart, depicting a dangerous coastline, here be monsters! I don't think many woods can contend with Ash for cool spalting, and sometimes, it even stays together.
Amazing! Such beautiful markings and grain. Love it 😀 💜
Simply awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
What a beautiful piece of work, Andy! Amazing job! 💜
So unique and lovely!!!
So beautiful!💜
Beautiful 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦
Another amazing piece!!!
Really nice, Andy. That spalting is definitely cool. I don't think I've ever seen a winged bowl quite like that one.
Bill
Thanks Bill
Gorgeous piece, all I can say is you killed it.kudos 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thanks Tom
At first I was puzzled as were this was going but it turned out very creative and beautiful (I wasn't afraid it wouldn't). Nice for some bites and a dipper in the cup. Would love to have it on my table!
Or for a thick supper with some loafes of bread 💚
Beautiful!
I love the end product! sweet!
Very cool project. You are always pushing the boundaries.
Anyone else click the like button before watching? I know it will be fantastic.
Here's an idea. Take a wooden semicircle, divide it into two parts and arrange them diagonally. Fill the empty parts with epoxy resin, preferably of different colors, and turn it into a plate, for example.
Amazing beauty. Thank you Andy. You make my day
My pleasure 👍
GUAU!! Tremendo artista Andy.
Amazing.
Based on what I have seen you turn, I imagine you go through live centers quite often. You have a great talent.
Thankyou
Another beautiful piece of art, it’s reminiscent of an antique mariners map of the seas.
Great job Andy.
Stunning piece amazing spalting too
WOW! Amazing creation.
Really beautiful work Andy - love this design, great to watch cheers!
Beautiful wood. You did it proud.
Thankyou
I’ve done some square bowl and natural edge bowls where the wood surfaces seem to disappear, but never to that extent. I have been a nervous wreck on the ones I did trying to feel for the surface and really don’t know what you’re doing till you stop. Great job and hope your weren’t as nervous as I was watching you!
This is amazing love the whole process👍😍
Andy, your creativity is one of the things that attract me to your videos. I really like to turn spalted wood myself, even though it comes with its own set of difficulties. For example, I am very familiar with the need and practice of using a thin CA glue to stabilize the wood (after getting a rough shape) to keep it from breaking apart. I assume, based on the shavings you made afterward, that's what you were brushing on the outside prior to finishing it. Because your videos not only inspire but teach (whether you intend that or not), I'd like to suggest that when you do something like brushing something on that you show the product or at least add text to the screen explaining what it is so others may learn from it. Another beautiful piece.
Thanks Rob .. I used several coats of sanding sealer/ thinners mix and some CA around parts of the bark and any punky bits.. I put a bit of info in the description but definitely need to add more .. Cheers Andy
Yes, please add more infos. I was curious why you oiled it and then turned it again. Seems to not been oil...
I like the design and that wood, wow!
Beautiful and unique as always
Sen bir harikasın.
Super.
Düşünün her bir sanat sakarsız olmaz.
Sen bir sanatlarsın.
Great looking piece Andy, well done! Cheers
Awesome work as always sir 👏.
Outstanding.
