Woodturning - Tripod Spalted Oak Bowl

In this week’s woodturning video, I'll be turning an oak bowl and giving it some feet!
This wood was cut down recently and had some amazing spalting in it….and of course a few bug holes that were still occupied.
The piece was turned green to it’s finished thickness and allowed to dry. It was then sanded and the feet carved in with my Foredom rotary tool. The tricky part is when you are turning the piece and trying to match the surface of the outside of the bowl that is inside the collar, which turn into feet, with the outside of the bowl that’s outside of the collar. The better you get with that alignment the less sanding!

I watch your hands as you turn and no matter how deep the cut your hands are light on the tool. The gouge is doing all the work and you never seem to force anything. I try to remember that in my shop and keep my tools sharp, but I think you also have amazing control. Did you learn this from experimentation or did you have a teacher?
