      Hey Chris, A change in the RUclips algorithm seems to have reset the history on my entire channel. This means that my back catalog of videos is no longer getting views and the channel as stands can no longer be sustained.
      In hope of pulling this back around I’m reaching out to all you guys who I know to be loyal viewers and asking for as much engagement as possible with my past and upcoming videos.
      This means watching the videos through from start to finish without skipping, pressing the like button, engaging with comments and making sure you have pressed the bell icon when you subscribe. Sharing on social media or with friends via WhatsApp, or letting my playlists run through (for the dog to watch while your at work 😉). For those of you who don’t know, my new video’s are always on a Friday at 12:00PM GMT.
      It’s been great fun making these videos for you all and I still have many fresh and exciting ideas to share with you. Hopefully with your help we can get past this! Thanks in advance for the support.
      Jack.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  Год назад +1

      Cheers John. It’s a scraper of my own design. I’m sure others have done the same.. it essentially acts like a drill bit down the centre but then cuts like a negative rake scraper on the side of the tool. Meaning you don’t have to try to cut directly into endgrain and instead cut the side grain from the inside out. It’s a bit unusual but it works a treat. 😊

      Hi May. I’ve had those Yew logs for that long I can’t quite remember where I acquired them. A friends woodpile most likely. I am acquainted with a lot of local tree surgeons and groundskeepers.
      The technique is called burnishing. It is used to add a sheen like finish to the wood. 😊👍🏻

      The best guitarist I have ever met doesn’t read music or know what chords he is playing. He has an amazing ear. I can put a song on he has never heard and he is playing the chords along with it in seconds. I did study music theory when I was younger but I don’t think I have retained any of it. We were given a piano recently though and I am trying to teach myself Jazz. I placed it next to the kitchen so I have to walk past it a lot. Means I can play it for 2 minutes pretty regularly haha. All the 2 minutes add up 😊😎

    Just out interest, does a wood like yew need any special handling, given that parts of the tree are toxic to humans?

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  Год назад +1

      No. The dust is as dangerous as all other wood ( all wood requires lung protection) and if your working with it when green wash your hands before eating.. most important of all is to not eat the leave and berries and also bark. But unless you plan to eat the shavings your okay just treating it the same as any wood

    • @JackMackWoodturning

      Not even remotely. Woodturning should never be difficult or (beat you up) it it does you need to adjust and relax you grip.

      You can use food grade epoxy to seal it. 👍

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  Год назад +16

      You can eat off it.. just because yew trees contain taxines doesn’t render the wood poisonous. The toxin is least present in the wood vs other parts of the tree. Yew berries and leaves are a serious issue for dogs and children or I guess uneducated foragers. Once wood is seasoned the toxin is hardly present in the timber.
      I understand why people say this about yew but having researched the topic in great depth and having worked with yew for 2 decades I know it to be incorrect.. we have a yew fruit bowl at home that’s been in use for over 10 years with no issue. Iv turned green yew all day every day for weeks on end in shorts and a tee shirt being sprayed with sap (tree blood) with no I’ll effects. I used to be very cautious with it as a young woodturner. Caution is always preferable to stupidity. But knowledge and experience is everything 👍🏻

      @judithflow3131 Год назад +2

      Thank you both for the replies. I am still wary about it, though I also did learn by now that especially the leaves are poisonous and that the berries are actually edible, provided you remove the seed (and I'm still not gonna try tasting them).
      Maybe I'll try making a yew bowl sometime. It should be slightly less prone to cracking than plum, which is my favourite wood. I know I don't do myself a favour with my preference in materials, but when they work out, they always exceed my expectations. I'm even considering learning myself to cast epoxy, so I could still use my cracked plum blanks..
