Woodturning - This Was A Challenge!

  • I got this big oak trunk about two years ago and I've been trying to work out what I want to do with it. I had originally planned to turn one BIG piece from it, but I wasn't sure what, maybe in my head I had the idea of a large vase? Anyway, I decided to cut it into three pieces as I felt I'd get more value from it, and this piece seriously didn't disappoint. The markings are just fabulous, the burr clusters with the deep open grain of the English Oak just pop. I cannot wait to turn the next 2 pieces, but what should I make with them?
I wanted to make vase using the end grain of the wood as I haven't done this before and I thought it would look really cool, I think I was right 😁
The wood has been sanded to 3000 grit and finished with Danish oil and Wood wax
Let me know what you think in the comments 😁👍

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Well the piece you cut off could be made into a bowl or a clock or a wooden Frisbee (LOL) or a _____.
The big pieces, well....I don't know...hmm...maybe a lamp? (After turning then holes drilled all over...) 💁‍♂🤷‍♂🙆‍♂

Finally a beautiful piece of wood where everything hasn't been removed! So many woodworkers start with lovely grained largr pieces and then reduce and reduce and reduce down to pittly items. What a waste! But you have retained beauty and function! Very rewarding !

The way the grain runs and is brought out is great. When I saw the dark 'line' I thought it was a crack, but obviously it wasn't. The dark markings are very interesting and give some textural pops. I like it. 👍👍👍 When you were scooping up the bit and putting them in the bucket I thought how interesting it would be to use a lot of those with epoxy and make something. LOL.. I can't believe that came from me. I'm not usually an epoxy proponent....But it does have it's place...once in a great while...

Beautiful work, as always, Harry. We just had a 24" diameter pin oak felled at our home last month and I have 10 logettes (about 3 feet long) from it that I'm looking for ideas, as well. I'll likely use one for bowl blanks and another for vase blanks. I'll want to slab one for hand planes I like making on the CNC and a couple more for wedding boxes for my wife's (minister and wedding officiant) clients. Down to 5 with no plans, yet. I'll be looking through your other videos, of course.

While the end result is genuinely impressive, it seems as if you continue to use the spindle roughing gouge after changing the axis of turning, meaning you were then turning end grain with the tool. The spindle roughing gouge is not made for that type of situation and can break. Later you switch to a conventional bowl gouge, which is quite suitable. Can you explain why you used the roughing gouge in this way?

I cannot fault your techniques, or your beautiful results. However, this is one of the most boring woodturning videos I have ever seen, if not The Most Boring! Why? You just went on, and on, without stopping to check your work, which is hugely important in the creative process. Nor did you make any verbal communication, whatsoever! I'll watch a few more of your videos, just to check if this was a one off presentation. If it continues, I'll be unsubscribing!
