Tons of great solo Gabriel tunes, and many with way cool videos - "Sledge Hammer," "Shock The Monkey," "Games Without Frontiers" Thanks for a great synopsis of all these sounds and instruments coming together. I was in 10th grade when this tour came around and a few of my friends went to see it but I hadn't been to a concert yet so I missed it. But best believe I have the DVD of the show where this video comes from!! And I finally got to see him about 10 years ago and he was just as good, still has an incredible voice.

By this time he had pioneered world music influences into pop. He became very active in humanitarian issues and human rights violations and was the first to spearhead the movement that helped end the Aparthied State in South Africa. His third album from 1980 is his most extreme and experimental, I highly recommend it. It is self titled but has become known as 'melt' because the cover art is a shocking image of Peter's face melting.
He was a true pioneer all the way..

Peter Gabriel was a founder of WOMAD, World Of Music, Art and Dance which includes lot's of african rythm and instruments. In 1982,he experienced money problem because of WOMAD and was close to bankruptsy so Genesis did a reunion concert where the money went to cover that debt.
Peter Gabriel left Genesis after the 1975 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour and released his first soloalbum in 1977. Some great talent came from Genesis! 😎

"In Your Eyes" was first released on the Album "So" in 1986. It featured in memorable scene from the 1989 movie "Say Anything" with John Cusack playing this from a boombox over his head to the girl hes after; that movie scene is imbedded heavily into the pop culture lexicon. Per wikipedia, the "lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God." Its also said that the actress Roseanna Arquette was an inspiration, as her and Gabriel were romantically linked at this time.
This video was from the Secret World Tour from 1994. The video for the entire concert won a Grammy that year. The woman singing here is Paula Cole; she was Peter's choice to replace Sinead OConnor when she had to suddenly drop from the tour. At the time this video was recorded, Paula had been with the tour only 3 or 4 days; a week prior to this recording she was in San Fran living with 3 roommates barely scraping by. Peter left her a message on her answering machine and she immediately flew to Germany to join the tour. She ended up marrying one of the African musicians she worked with on this tour, and she had a couple good hits in the next few years.

...and this was only her 3rd or 4th show on the tour. She was flown in to replace Sinead O'Connor, who had to leave the tour due to a family emergency.
Another song from this tour that features her vocal talent is the duet "Don't Give Up". (far superior to the recorded version with Kate Bush, IMHO)

I can't tell you how much I love this man and his music. Check out 'Solsbury Hill', he wrote it write after leaving Genesis, it's about an epiphany he had, after being worried he might have made a mistake, he suddenly knew it was all going to be ok. If you don't know 'Sledgehammer', well, you should! Anyway, thanks for making my day right here. ✌❤

Here's another great one: Peter Gabriel wrote *COME TALK TO ME* to his daughter Melanie, who was a young girl at the time. Peter was going through a divorce, and his eight-year-old daughter, unable to process her emotions, stopped talking to him. He wrote the song to let her know that it had nothing to do with how much he loved her and that he missed talking to her. Years later, after they made amends, she became a singer herself and joined him onstage to sing the song together at this 2004 concert in Bruxelles: ruclips.net/video/4J1gWMLbV70/видео.html

Great reaction! You need to check out 'Intruder' from his 3rd self-titled solo album. Phil Collins on the drums, and famously he was told "no cymbals" by Peter. This is also the track that spawned the ubiquitous 80's "gated drum" sound.

Peter became very interested in "World Music", incorporating sounds, themes and rhythms from many countries. He also became involved in bringing awareness of important issues to the public (The Nobel Peace Laureates awarded him the "Man Of Peace" award in 2006), two examples are:
*BIKO* , about Stephen Biko, a South African anti-apartheid activist. Biko was arrested, beaten by police, then driven 700 miles to a hospital where he laid naked on the floor until he died of his injuries. This concert version also shows clips of the movie that was made about him: ruclips.net/video/luVpsM3YAgw/видео.html
*SHAKING THE TREE* is about empowering women to go out, take control of their own destiny and shake up the male establishment. This version is also from the Secret World Live concert: ruclips.net/video/3_Q79lls1f0/видео.html

Start from his first solo album…and go forward in order…I saw him last year perform his new album on the I/O tour…still incredible…12th row Boston Garden….he started Genesis in High School with Tony Banks the keyboardist and released their first album in 1969…. He left Genesis in 1975 and what transpires over the next 49 years is utter brilliance…..he ushered in a new language in music with his solo work….as he did in Genesis.

What a talent! When I first got into music Phil Collins had just become the vocalist for Genesis, so, I grew up with that version and couldn't understand why original fans were angry with the band. Then I listened to every Genesis album from the beginning with Peter Gabriel through the transistion to Phil Collins, then I got it, and I was angry too. LOL!

Magnificent song. My favorite from Peter Gabriel. 1986. Kinda overshadowed by “Sledgehammer” and “Big Time,” but a real gem of a song. He’s one of those rare musicians who writes brilliant songs inside of uniquely sounding arrangements. (Paul Simon being another)
I would love to see how he brings his ideas to life.
And even more, I wanted to give you this link to enjoy. It’s from a long time ago, minor summer, one hit wonder from a guy who deserved more attention.
Jeffrey Gaines’ version of “In Your Eyes” might be one of the finest covers of all time, in my humble opinion. After hearing the original, I wonder if the cover would hit differently?
