From 1971 "Nursery Cryme".... . The lyrics are based on a Victorian fairy tale written by Gabriel, about two children in a country house. The girl, Cynthia, kills the boy, Henry, by cleaving his head off with a croquet mallet. She later discovers Henry's musical box. When she opens it, "Old King Cole" plays, and Henry returns as a spirit, but starts aging very quickly. This causes him to experience a lifetime's sexual desire in a few moments, and he tries to persuade Cynthia to have sexual intercourse with him. However, the noise causes his nurse to arrive, and she throws the musical box at him, destroying them both. The album cover shows Cynthia holding a croquet mallet, with a few heads lying on the ground
They expand on the story in some live performances where Henry goes to heaven and gets rejected saying he needs to go back to earth to live more but in the body of an old man. And the end is him talking to Cynthia. Mind of a boy, body of an old man. Weird and a bit creepy but excellent piece.
Also, in an interview with the five of them in 2014, Tony Banks (pianist) mentioned that they never knew what Peter was going to be wearing so the first time they did the Musical Box, and Peter came out with the old man outfit, Tony's thought was 'what's happening..?' because Peter had learned that if he told them about the costumes beforehand he had a very good chance of being told no, he can't do that. :D

My older brother saw this episode of the Midnight Special- they played Watcher as well- he went out the next day and bought the Live album- I was very young but was hooked for life once he bought that album
Early Genesis songs: “Return of the giant hogweed” ,and “Get them out by Friday” have strange lyrics also. Thanks for reacting to this fan favorite of Genesis fans “The musical box”.
Also, check out the other little band Phil was with alongside Genesis - Brand X - his drumming is insane! Tracks like And So to F and Nuclear Burn for example - the guy was a beast!
Gabriel era Genesis was so damn good, you should check out Watcher of the Skies or Dancing with the Moonlit Knight - and Phil was AMAZING on Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (album)
You haven't yet heard the band's masterpiece, the conceptual double album "the lamb lies down on Broadway". Among other things, you'll hear drum parts that are pure genius. It's here and nowhere else that they are at their best. Come on, go for it. You're not ready for what's about to happen in your mind!
Great psychedelic British rock tune,,, I can’t help thinking that what Cream and [Traffic]- did in the late’60s - actually layed the groundwork -for much of the 1970SPROG. Bands that we love , and talk about, , p.s. -rest in peace amazing ‘father of British blues rock -‘-the amazing musician and mentor-JOHN MAYALL ….
Old Genesis in the 70's brought wild stories to life with music and theatrical vocals. Check out the story on this one. All the tracks on this album and on the next one Selling England by the Pound are amazing. Thanks for reviewing. Glad you see the quality of musicianship!
i thought this one is from Nursery Cryme, then followed Foxtrot (with Supper's Ready) and after that Selling England by the Pound (and I love Firth of Fifth on that one).
"Can you tell me where my country lies, said the uniform to his true loves eyes, It lies with me cried the queen of maybe, and for her merchandise he traded in his prize." In one verse so much to unpack. The whole album is a must-listen.
Progressive? Ah, yes and avant-garde. Dramatic. Big changes and lots of dynamics. Bizarre story lines with magical soundscapes. Yes, Phil had hair back then but still had a great voice. A real bell bottom 'hippie'. They influenced a ton of bands. "tearing it up" is so true. Genesis had a strange sense of humor. This story is beyond weird. Gabriel is playing a guy who gets caught up in a musical box and ages dramatically. You should see Phil singing this tune at Knebsworth in the '90s. Fantastic. (but Phil did NOT use costumes or make-up) Check out more from this era. Another sci-fi type tune from early on is a banger called "Watcher of the Skies" about an alien finding Earth dead and wondering what happened. Two classic Prog masterpieces with Gabriel are: "Firth of Fifth" (about a fictitious river) and "Supper's Ready" (loosely based on the book of Revelation) Great music. After Gabriel left for a solo career, Phil hit some prog tunes and later the charts! As you probably know they ruled the world in the mid-'80s. "Dance on a Volcano" is wild. Some say it is about how Collins felt coming out front and singing for the band. So many other great tunes.
Touring live after Gabriel, they brought in Chester Thompson to play drums when Collins was out front, and for a couple of numbers Bill Bruford played. On the Seconds Out live recording Collins and Thompson both play and their kits are set up symmetricly (Collins left handed, Thompson right). What they do in Dance on a Volcano and Apocalypse in 9/8 is stunning. I wish I'd been there!
May I suggest you Firth of Fifth, Dancing in the Moonlite Knight ("Selling Englang by the Pound" versions) and The Knife (live version, 1973). Genesis was an amazing prog rock band (my favorite actually) and, as the drummer you are, you would really appreciate the incredible creativity, subtility and talent of Phil at this time... Thanks for this great reaction ❤
@setonhillstudios seriously. I, must have missed that one! After Neil Peart, Mike is my favourite drummer from when I heard him on the killing hand track in 89!
just fantastic. they put so much work into it. i feel fortunate to have had it as part of my soundscape for 40 years... love the early genesis and yes. peter's first 4 solo albums are great, too.
Watch this: ruclips.net/video/_FBcz3tBH74/видео.htmlsi=aseHAqMUG2aes06W This is Genesis live at Shepperton studios Oct. 1973. It is fantastic. The set list is: Watcher of the skies Dancing with the moonlit knight I know what I like Musical box Supper’s ready You’ll probably want to have the lyrics handy so you can understand the stories of the songs especially supper’s ready which is truly glorious. Enjoy, this video is really really good.
Seton Hill, The name of this record is Nursery Crimes. The song “Musical box” is about a nursery crime or infant crime. The album cover is inspired by the song “Musical box”. The (made up) story is that children are playing lawn croquet. The game you tap wood balls with a mallet thru wire frames. The little girl comes from behind and beheads the little boy. The boys head goes up in the air never to come down ,until he is an old man. And he confronts the girl who beheaded him as a child. Peter Gabriel wrote very odd lyrics for Genesis songs. I don’t think “ The musical box” was a true fairy tale ,just a song Peter made up for the nursery crimes album. In the cover you see the girl on a lawn playing croquet and the boys head rolling on the ground. It IS weird ya’ll. That’s why early Genesis is an AQUIRED taste. Genesis was an early leader in progressive rock like Yes ,and King Crimson.
you think you were traumatized, think of the people who tuned in that night for "Smokin' In the Boys' Room" somewhere on YT there's an interview with Mike Rutherford where he describes the look on Steve Miller's face at the end of their performance as being pure "WTF was that?"
@@setonhillstudios watch the full episode, it's utterly bizarre and fascinating to see Brownsville Station, then see Steve Miller jam with James Booker, then it comes back from commercial and what the hell are those? Batwings?!? In the Mike Rutherford interview I was referencing, he talks about how all the other artists looked at them like actual aliens who'd literally landed from Planet WTF except the Midnight Special lighting dudes, who were hugely into what they were doing with UV and how it could be lit for TV. The whole show is peak eclectic madness, very much like those ridiculous 1970s concert bills where you'd see Ten Years After, The Eagles and The Mahavishnu Orchestra on one show.
Woo now be prepared Gabriel was theatrical! I was angry when je left. No worries thou Phil took over in 1976 so Phil.is Genesis 50 flippin yrs of awsome epic tunes. The rabbit hole will be a blast! Cheers
@@setonhillstudios yep Peter would go off the rest of the boys kept guessing. So Tony Banks on keys Mike Rutherford in guitar. Dark hair guitar player Steve Hacket 70 to 77. Dam wait til you get to. Home by the sea 1 and 2 . Now the surprize live you got Chester Thomson on drums. So with Phil as lead vocals. Can't do all the drumming. Then je runs up and him and Vhester go at it. Two flippin sets of drums. Gotta check out a conversation with two stools. They were practicing at hotel. Brought the stools with them. start on them gradually to the drum sets. Just epic. Cheers
So yes, progressive rock in the 70's used to be like that. Genesis was one of the most important progrock bands of all time. About influences, Pink Floyd was before them but bands like Rush, Marillion, Dream Theater, Queen, Van Halen and even Iron Maiden were influenced by them.
Great stuff mate ! Dat's ya early 70s (leafy) Surrey based private schooled Prog boys for ya !(though Hackett and Collins were working class). Check out the Lamb! It's insane.
I'm kinda sad, kinda happy that this music was the norm when I was a kid. Happy that I had it all, sad that it's in the past. But mostly happy, it's all there for the young folk.
OMG!! I loved your face!!!! XDDDD I must have had the same face as you when I first saw Peter in his Genesis days XDDD I first knew Peter Gabriel from his solo career, so watching him this young and crazy was completely mind-blowing!! About what's going on in the song... ha! That's another wild story made up by Peter! He used to come up with these weird stories that he would tell before the songs when he was in Genesis. The story that introduces The Musical Box goes something like this: Henry and Cynthia are two Victorian children who were playing croquet. Suddenly Cynthia decides to chop Henry's head off with her mallet. Henry goes to heaven and, since it wasn't his time yet, he's sent back to earth. But in the journey up and down he becomes an old man, living a whole lifetime of experiences and also of sexual desire all at once. When the nurse opens the musical box from the nursery, Henry is freed and appears again as the old man, with all those newfound desires... And that's it XD That's the story. Although Peter tells it infinitely better than me XD You should see him do it, there are other videos of Genesis performing this song where he tells this introduction to the audience. About other songs you need to check from them, there are a lot! But Supper's Ready is an absolute must!! There are also video performances with Peter playing several characters in the song. You're gonna love it.
Lead vocals and flute here are Peter Gabriel. Phil Collins plays drums and provides BGVs. Later, Gabriel left the band, and Collins took over lead vocals. What less people know is that Phil Collins, during a short hiatus of Genesis, formed a band with John Goodsall (guitars), Robin Lumley (keys), and Percy Jones (bass) called "Brand X" - jazz-oriented fusion/prog - as much as I love early Genesis, I actually prefer Phil's drumming for Brand X! Check out "Nuclear Burn" or "Smacks of Euphoric Hysteria" to hear Phil in an entirely different environment!
I started to get in to Genesis when invisible touch came out, I was 15 and really enjoyed the album and wanted to find out more about the band and went backwards through their albums. I had no idea the Peter Gabriel from sledgehammer was anything to with the band. Then one day I was round a friend’s house and talking about how I liked Genesis. Their dad said I have some bootleg VHS of Genesis and put it on and it had an old show from this era and remember thinking WTF is that. 😅 scared the hell out of me. 😮 Anyway as years went on I bought the older albums and each one was different and took me some time to get in to. But I love those albums now and love this band in all its different stages. Genesis to me are the greatest band, so full of talent who just did their own thing without care if anyone else liked it. By doing that they created some of the most magical music in history. Don’t let the “No Peter, No Genesis”, “Phil ruined the band” muppets tell you any different, they are just progressive rock fans that could not progress.
Thanks so much for the insight and all the background info! I can’t wait to hear more from them! Definitely full of talent as I can easily tell just from this performance! More to come! Have a great one and thanks for hanging out!
Peter Gabriel the singer was very theatrical on stage and has one of my fav voices I love this old prog rock Try The Firth of Fifth and when you ready for a 20 plus min. prog masterpiece try Suppers Ready its magical
Peter Gabriel always brought the theatre in old Genesis, not sure it was always welcomed by the band, however IMO it only worked because of his voice and the tightness/talent of the musicians. I love the reactions across the pond when their first exposure to Phil Collins is his live In the Air Tonight drumming at the end, then they see his proper percussion skills. He was quite literally one of the best in the World.
This is just Peter being Peter the way he was in his 20s. I just saw him last September and he is still the consummate showman though without makeup or costumes.
At 7:10 you get a glimpse of how this song was originally performed, when they were between guitar players and Tony took the role of soloist in the band. That's one reason their music regularly had long keyboard solos. Plus Phil was definitely a beast of a drummer from Day 1. Otherwise all you have to know is that Genesis were easily the most "English" of the early progressive rock bands. Peter Gabriel is one of the quintessential examples of the "shy kid who used music to come out of his shell". He learned the moment he put on the red dress and fox's head mask that shocking audiences had its advantages! The only thing anyone had to compare this to at the time was David Bowie or Roxy Music.
Great observation - Young "Henry" , after having his head removed by Cynthia's croquet mallot, returns as an old man to beguile her. If this is freakin' you out, stay away from the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 😊
The story behind this: A young boy, Henry, is accidentally decapitated by his friend Cynthia while playing croquet. Returning to the house, Cynthia plays Henry's old musical box, which unleashes the spirit of Henry as an old man. Henry attempts to seduce Cynthia. The nurse enters the room and hurls the musical box at the wall, destroying both it and Henry.
11:20 Who influenced who? It started with King Crimson's and their "In The Court Of The Crimson King" album. That's the one that inspired all the prog bands, possibly except for Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull.

If you look back there was a band that was probably the most progressive of them all... Still I love this era of Genesis, and Peter Gabriel did go and do some really good solo stuff, just like Phil Collins and most of the rest of the band. They were true musicians, so much talent, they didn't need artificial input from a computer to enhance their work. As for that other band well, how many of you can guess the one I still admire the most? That's for the review, always great to hear older stuff getting the recognition it deserves, even if it doesn't meet formular cash cow music I hear today.

Thanks for reacting to this fan favorite of Genesis fans “The musical box”.
Suppers Ready, The Knife, Return of the Giant Hogweed, Firth of Fifth - just for starters!
Also, check out the other little band Phil was with alongside Genesis - Brand X - his drumming is insane! Tracks like And So to F and Nuclear Burn for example - the guy was a beast!
Tapping WAY before Van Halen
The thing with live versions is, that imo you should know the studio version first. Of course and no doubt, this live version is fantastic.
Gabriel era Genesis was so damn good, you should check out Watcher of the Skies or Dancing with the Moonlit Knight - and Phil was AMAZING on Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (album)
You killed me at 12:33 I am dying cracking up 😂😂😂
😂🤣😂🤣
You haven't yet heard the band's masterpiece, the conceptual double album "the lamb lies down on Broadway".
Among other things, you'll hear drum parts that are pure genius. It's here and nowhere else that they are at their best. Come on, go for it. You're not ready for what's about to happen in your mind!
Hi there🎉 Greeting from hot Jakarta
I love to listening this together with all of you 'cos I'm alone since 74😅
Nice to see someone react to older Genesis
Loved it! Thanks for hanging out!

Thanks for watching! Have a great one! 😄
@@erickvermeulen9734 Yes your're absolutely right. My mistake. Thanks fro pointing out.
"Can you tell me where my country lies, said the uniform to his true loves eyes, It lies with me cried the queen of maybe, and for her merchandise he traded in his prize." In one verse so much to unpack. The whole album is a must-listen.
Gabriel era Genesis is my favorite band of all-time.
Tony Banks on Keys, Steve Hackett Guitar, Rutherford bass, and rhythm
Thanks for all the info and hanging out! I definitely have to dig deeper down the rabbit hole. This was a wild one!
@@raygunsforronnie847 All true. Say Chester and Phil together in concert once and it was magical. Mind-blowing and a standing ovation.
The more Genesis you listen to, you understand the lyrics of part 3 of OCTAVARIUM.
People always laugh when I say Phil's my favourite drummer. They think it's because of "in the Air.." Nah, nah, nah... This is why.
No doubt! He’s such a beast! 🔥
.. and they eere in their 20s
Amazing
Masterpiece
Peter Gabriel era un genio de la música. Al igual que toda la banda génesis en sus primeros álbumes.
Steve Hackett, tapping that guitar way before van halen ever did
Love your channel, from UK, love your style. Made me laugh, respect, subscribed. (Genesis fan).
That made my day! So glad you are enjoying the channel and thanks for hanging out!
Genial genesis grandioso
May I suggest you Firth of Fifth, Dancing in the Moonlite Knight ("Selling Englang by the Pound" versions) and The Knife (live version, 1973).
Genesis was an amazing prog rock band (my favorite actually) and, as the drummer you are, you would really appreciate the incredible creativity, subtility and talent of Phil at this time...
Thanks for this great reaction ❤
Thanks for all the suggestions and I really appreciate you hanging out! Have a great one! 😀
You said that your favorite band was Dream Theater, you should know that Mike Portnoy he's a huge fan of Genesis
I knew he was influenced by them, Rush, and Yes. Can’t wait to hear this new DT album with him back behind the kit! Gonna be 🔥
@setonhillstudios seriously.
Go for Yess And you and I ...or any 70's Yess!
Thanks for having an open mind, I was worried by the title and thumbnail 😅
Haha 😂 Definitely crazy talented! Thanks for watching!

This is Genesis live at Shepperton studios Oct. 1973. It is fantastic. The set list is:
Watcher of the skies
Dancing with the moonlit knight
I know what I like
Musical box
Supper’s ready
You’ll probably want to have the lyrics handy so you can understand the stories of the songs especially supper’s ready which is truly glorious. Enjoy, this video is really really good.
Seton Hill,
The name of this record is Nursery Crimes.
They started back in like 1967.
You should see the Fox Head version. Gabriel picked up his wife dress and put on a fox head. All this to serve the story of the song.
you think you were traumatized, think of the people who tuned in that night for "Smokin' In the Boys' Room"
somewhere on YT there's an interview with Mike Rutherford where he describes the look on Steve Miller's face at the end of their performance as being pure "WTF was that?"
Hahaha 😂 That is hilarious!
Imagine the night on stage when Peter came out in a dress and a giant foxes head. He didn't for-warn the band in case they vetoed it.
Haha 🤣 😂
Woo now be prepared Gabriel was theatrical! I was angry when je left. No worries thou Phil took over in 1976 so Phil.is Genesis 50 flippin yrs of awsome epic tunes. The rabbit hole will be a blast! Cheers
I had better start digging then! Thanks for hanging out!
Just epic. Cheers
I've never heard this before Great reaction
Definitely a wild one! Thanks so much!
Listen to the early Genesis, and your life will change
So yes, progressive rock in the 70's used to be like that. Genesis was one of the most important progrock bands of all time. About influences, Pink Floyd was before them but bands like Rush, Marillion, Dream Theater, Queen, Van Halen and even Iron Maiden were influenced by them.
Bienvenido al mundo de Genesis (welcome to Genesis' world)
Thanks so much! Can’t wait to hear more!
please do all early genesis!
Definitely an amazing era for music in general! So many great bands and artists to get inspired from looking back!
You need to ear Supper's Ready! Its Genesis masterpiece!!! Believe me and do it as soon as you can, Buy you a beer box if you wont like!!!!
I either missed this episode or I was too traumatized to remember it 😅
🤣😂🤣 I hear ya!
This era of Genesis was incredible musicianship and creativity along with a Peter Gabriel’s theatrical performance was legendary….
Haha 😂 Definitely threw me for a loop! Appreciate the backstory and thanks for hanging out! 😁
@@setonhillstudiosI’ve shared your video in some Gabriel and Genesis facebook groups 😁
Ya. There was a story printed in the album which explains the meaning of the song.
Appreciate the suggestion and thanks for hanging out!
Excelente reacción y excelente grupo 🤘
Peter Gabriel always brought the theatre in old Genesis, not sure it was always welcomed by the band, however IMO it only worked because of his voice and the tightness/talent of the musicians. I love the reactions across the pond when their first exposure to Phil Collins is his live In the Air Tonight drumming at the end, then they see his proper percussion skills. He was quite literally one of the best in the World.
good morning (kalimera) from Greece
This is just Peter being Peter the way he was in his 20s. I just saw him last September and he is still the consummate showman though without makeup or costumes.
; And the nurse will tell you lies, of a kingdom beyond the skies' what a brilliant track, it took seven people to write this

Shouldn't worry, I don't think they have the inflatable testicles on film.
@@Vince-lq3ve There is a clip out there
@@kippwieland6464 I probably won't look for it.😳
Genesis has been the best band ever (with the Beatles)
The story behind this: A young boy, Henry, is accidentally decapitated by his friend Cynthia while playing croquet. Returning to the house, Cynthia plays Henry's old musical box, which unleashes the spirit of Henry as an old man. Henry attempts to seduce Cynthia. The nurse enters the room and hurls the musical box at the wall, destroying both it and Henry.
Wow! Thanks for the info! Definitely need to look more into that! Appreciate it!
Oh Snap! That was Tuff!!

11:20 Who influenced who? It started with King Crimson's and their "In The Court Of The Crimson King" album. That's the one that inspired all the prog bands, possibly except for Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull.

@@setonhillstudios Hey Steven
The lyrics are based on a Victorian fairy tale written by Gabriel, about two children in a country house.
The girl, Cynthia, kills the boy, Henry, by cleaving his head off with a croquet mallet. She later discovers Henry's musical box. When she opens it, "Old King Cole" plays, and Henry returns as a spirit, but starts aging very quickly.
This causes him to experience a lifetime's sexual desire in a few moments, and he tries to persuade Cynthia to have sexual intercourse with him. However, the noise causes his nurse to arrive, and she throws the musical box at him, destroying them both
😳😳 What a wild ride!
He has been living in the box next to the clock on the mantlepiece also for what seemed like an eternity waiting before the above encounters take place.

And everyone forgets they were in their early twenties when they achieved this level.
There are no time signature changes in this song, just some tempo changes. It’s all 4/4. Other songs from the era do have time signature changes.
Gotcha! Thanks so much!
Back in the day musicians could actually play their instruments.I would suggest any track off the Trespass album.
This was when music was real and there was stuff still to do. Genesis did it well.
