Today on the channel, we are checking out the band Rainbow with their tune "Stargazer." When I say this blew me away, that would be an understatement! From the incredible playing to the phenomenal vocal performance, this has it all! I cannot believe that this level of talent is on that stage at the same time delivering such an EPIC performance! Ronnie James Dio is becoming my favorite singer of all time! Hope you enjoy! #reaction #dio #ronniejamesdio #70smusic #70srock #musicreactions

This tune blew me away!!! Everyone on that stage had crazy talent!
There are two types of people in the world - those that say Stargazer is the greatest rock song ever written, and those that are wrong. RIP Cozy, Jimmy and RJD. Ritchie is a bona fide genius.
indeed mate i agree
@@smithpm81 Cheers, a fellow Hawkfan too, top banana! I wish he'd have done Stargazer Part Two, A Light In The Black, as well, a toss up for me as to which I prefer, the huge instrumental section of ALITB blows my head off every time I hear it!? Gates Of Babylon is the other solid gold masterpiece from this "classic" line up.
@@ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords indeed mate, asleep in a hive in the base of a hollow tree
Ronnie had an epic voice!
@@smithpm81 Apologies for delay in replying, was standing on the runway waiting for takeoff! Hard to believe that it's almost fifteen years since Ronnie passed, still missed, still loved.
It was Cozy Powell on drums (RIP), a great drummer who played with various bands through 1970's and 1980's, plus solo stuff. Dio (RIP) was not with Deep Purple, he was with Elf and then Rainbow, and later Black Sabbath, and then his own band. It was Ritchie Blackmore the guitarist who left Deep Purple and formed Rainbow, and later went back to Deep Purple for a couple of albums. Hope that helps.
Cozy Powell is bad-ass, dude played with broom handles for drumsticks; also Cozy played with guitarist Michael Schenker in MSG
Cozy also played with Brian May in the 90s.. Resurrection is worth a listen with Brian singing as well!
Yeah man. Cozy played with 'everyone', he was THE go to British rock drummer for many many years. He even had a couple of hit singles of his own (Dance with the Devil?).
Currently, Ritchie Blackmore has a band with Candice Night called Blackmore's Night. It is renaissance rock.
@@petergoddard1960 Dance With The Devil/The Man In Black/ Na Na Na.👍👍
The amount of talent on that stage is mind blowing
3 absolute goats of rock in one band. Blackmore on guitar, Dio on vocals, and Cozy Powell on the sticks.
Legends!!! 🔥
Dude cannot leave off Jimmy Bain on bass
What about John lord
Great track. Dio a legend.
@@kevinsteadman7215 What does Jon Lord have to do with this? My favourite keyboard player of all time, only connection to Rainbow is through Ritchie. R.I.P. Jon
It's like the best song ever is topped by the best vocal performance ever.
One of the best rock songs of all time Dio, Cozy and Blackmore - what a trio!
On of the best solo's in the history of rock.
Roumors say, Cozy hammered this masterpiece in in a single take in the studio.
Producer: I take that one.
History made
Cozy Powell on drums is probably one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, he lived his life at 200mph, and played on more albums than just about any other musician ever. Dio was in Elf then Rainbow, He came to the attention of Ritchie Blackmore supporting Deep Purple (not part of Deep Purple) This is probably the greatest of Rainbows songs out of a lot of great songs.
My friends older brother played this track to me when I was 17( many years ago) when the drum intro kicked in, then guitar and the icing on the cake R J DIO started to sing i was hooked. Still am. Every time i play this i get goosebumps because i know what's coming. The way it builds up. Saw them live and they sounded better live. Grat band.
Cozy was a great guy as well. There is a video of him on TV show where he surprises a kid...a real person and boy could he play!! And he held the left hand classic style!!!!! Love it!
That’s awesome! I always love to hear when such talented people are also genuine and kind! He is such a BEAST in this track! Loved it! 🔥
Ronnie James Dio was born in 1942. He grew up listening to opera. He started out playing trumpet in bands, he switched to bass and also sang and recorded singles in the 1950’s. Some of his singles are on RUclips.
Ritchie Blackmore, Cozy Powell, Ronnie James m************ Dio, Jimmy Bain, Tony Carey.. That is the Pinnacle, the beginning of the metal era
DIo was in a ELF RAINBOW BLACK SABBATH and his own band DIO
Hi, thanx for the great video. It`s so good to see people discover these classic wonderful tracks from the 70`s and 80`s all over again and get really hyped up. This song with these vocals and this playing is absolutely incredible. I bought the LP in 1976 and Stargazer is special to me `till this day, like for so many people here. Yeah, Cozy is a Powerhouse with a fantastic double bass and lots of great tom fills. He played on so many records and in so many bands and he`s so good, insane. Your question relating to the trippy effect on the guitar solo: Blackmore used a slide, but not in the standard way, he played these eastern, arabic sounding scales with it, never done before. And Ronnie, come on !!
Lots of people here requested "Mistreated" from Munich `77 here - fantastic! In the vein of Stargazer you shoud check out "Gates of Babylon" - epic !
Keep it up...
Cozy Powell (R.I.P.) on Drums! he was a beast. Dio was ALSO in Black Sabbath.
They both were also in Black Sabbath :)
What will truly blow your mind is not Ronnie James Dio´s voice/skills while singing...but the fact he never had any official voice training. He is simply a natural singer/master of his craft.
sorta untrained he learned breath support from plaing trumpet from i think he was 5or 6 til his teens
Did you know, Ronnie had a doo wop band in the early 60s called Ronnie & The Red Caps? Check em out, pretty good stuff.
@@CB-xr1eg I knew he played a trompet before he became a singer...and Iknew he was in some bands...but not what kind of bands :-)
@@steenjrgensen715 the prophets, red caps and the ramblers as well as the 3 names elf went under
Don't forget Elf.
This is basically a classical composition done in a hard rock format. And it's also absolute genius...

I went to a Rainbow concert in 1976 ! I had only known Blackmore before and I was blown away by Dio as you are today. Dio is the voice of metal and will ever be !!! 🤘🥰🎶
When he was in Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell is a must for a Ronnie James Dio vocal experience.
Man on the Silver Mountain.
Dio is the only singer that puts a lump of emotion in my throat, an absolute God
Way back in the 70's I was a fanatic of Deep Purple, mostly due to Richie Blackmore. Following him I became a Rainbow fan immediately! Ronnie James Dio was a fantastic performer (May he rest in Peace).
There are so many great tunes, but one of my favorites is The Shed. Also the Gates of Babylon, Man on the silver Mountain, Kill the King, LA Connection or the Temple of the King.
Simply love this band!
Ronnie James Dio the absolute greatest vocalist in generations and that is saying a hell of a lot. The power texture and heart his voice exudes is unbelievable ! Can't get enough
So much greatness on one stage. I'm always amazed how many people don't know Rainbow, doesn't seem possible but that's how it is. Great reaction, thanks so much, that was a blast. ✌❤
Definitely an insanely talented band! So glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Light in the black..man on the silver mountain, gates of Babylon..so many incredible songs by rainbow..
The more epic Rainbow songs are from when Ronnie was with them. You've also got Long Live Rock n Roll, Lady Of The Lake, Kill The King.
Cozy Powell❤
The little man with the big voice. RIP RJD!!
Being that short probably helped ground his voice even more ? Met him once at the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure premier party. He was my height but he was on stage 😂
The late great Cozy Powell on drums. One of the greatest drummers in rock history.
Absolutely phenomenal! 🔥
@@setonhillstudios -If you think he's good on this, you should check out his solo effort "Dance with the Devil". Superb!
The drummer is Cozy Powell, who replaced Gary Driscoll with this album.
Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple & recruited Dio & 2 other members of the band Elf to form Rainbow. After the first album, Ritchie Blackmore fired the other two members but kept Dio. This is off the 2nd album Rising.
Dio would do one more album before leaving for Black Sabbath for a couple of albums before forming a solo band. He would return to Sabbath for a reunion album called The Dio Years & then Black Sabbath would change their band name to Heaven & Hell to avoid confusion with the Ozzy Osbourne & Tony Martin eras (though it's likely due to the rights of the name being split between the original members who weren't all there).
I love this song, my interpretation is how a life dedicated to something you believe in but yet not being 100% known to be true can be wasteful. Like the slaves of Ancient Egypt who believed in a savior with many generations never actually seeing it come to fruition.
Well...one of the best drummer ever.: Mr. Cozy Powell. A lot of amazing bands with his music. Cheers.
Good to see you appreciating these brilliant musicians and the piece itself.
Dio was the man, a true legend. I got to see him live many times and he was just as awesome as on the records, if not better. Rainbow with Dio and Blackmore was a phenomenon! The drummer here is Cozy Powell, another legend who left us too early.
Stargazer is one of my favourites by Rainbow.
This is easily one of the greatest metal songs of the 70's, and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Everybody was on FIRE for this one. And the lyrics are just fantastic. Both a literal tale told from the viewpoint of a wizard's enchanted slave helping build him a tower so he can fly to the stars, only to watch him fall and die on the sand, AND an allegory about the dangers of blindly following a demagogue. The clever composition foreshadowing the wizard's fall (Blackmore's descending chromatic finale to that AMAZING B Phrygian dominant solo) and the switch in the lyrics to PAST tense ("where WAS your star", etc) alluding to the finality of the wizard's failure. Another line that REALLY hits me is "Ohhhh I seeeee his faaaaace!". In the beginning verses, it's clear that the character is expressing his fear and awe at seeing his master's face, but when you hear the very same line sang after the wizard falls, sang EXACTLY the same way, it's clear that he is shocked at seeing the clearly mortal man dead on the sand. Just perfection.
It didn't hurt any to have a full orchestra backing up these awesome musicians.
It was Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) that was also in Deep Purple. Dio also sang in Black Sabbath (Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer and The Devil You Know (released under the band name Heaven and Hell))
Now, you need to listen to the next song on that LP.. A light in the black.. Those two songs tell the entire story... One of the greatest album sides ever recorded Rainbow Rising baby
This is where Ronnie became a god, which, oddly enough, is what the wizard in the song thought he was. There's much fantastic playing in this song but Ronnie's vocals overwhelm it all.
The wizard didn't think he was a god. he wanted to build a tower so he get to see god.
@@CB-xr1eg Not sure how you came to that conclusion but that's okay. I have no objection to the song meaning something different to you.
@@daveminers3404 I'm really glad you have no objection. That's really kind of you, thank you so much.😐
@@CB-xr1eg You're very welcome.
Cozy, is one of the greatest drum masters of time. Mob rules is my favorite dio. of all.
Try Dance with the Devil. Brilliant drumming.
He was also in Black Sabbath and Elf. Cozy Powell is arguably one of the most influential drummers of the era, and if you think he's a monster, you are correct. Check literally ANYTHING with Ian Paice on drums if you want to see another monster.

I recommend their live performance of "Mistreated," from Munich ('77, I believe).
Cozy absolutely one of the best damn drummers I’ve ever heard
Mr Cozy Powell on drums, his sound is unmistakeable
If you want to hear some of Dio's absolute Best Vocals, check out Rainbow Mistreated live in Munich. Cozy Powell there on drums aswell and Ritchie on guitar obviously. Incredible live performance.
Rainbow with Dio was my absolute favorite back in my teen days, 64 y/o now. Still holds up.
During the 70's and 80's we had very few toys. But we had a Hell of a lot of RAW Talent...
Yeah not so much guitar effects, no bass with five strings, still they could MUSIC
The great Cozy and Ronnie. RIP.
Cozy Powell rip 🙏 a legend rock drummer. Ritchie Blackmore was top 3 rock guitarist in the world. During his solo he's using a slide delay eco and Akio preamp reel to reel. Amzing. He played thru 280 watts Marshall majors (pigs,) Jim Marshall made them himself for Ritchie Blackmore he was the loudest guitarist on earth back then.
Ritchie has never been "the loudest guitarist on earth". Deep Purple (with Ritchie) was once the loudest band in the world playing at 117 decibels. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
Going to echo quite a few others and say check out Light in the Black from that same album, one of my favorite drum performances. Also the video where Cozy Powell sets a record for most drums played in a minute, it's ridiculous.
And Blackmoore...I have this CD.
Legendary Cozy Powell on drums
Strings by Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. The climax of this song is one of a kind. Thank you for this great reaction 🎉 More Cozy Powell on drums? Check out "Kill the King" by this same band 😊
So glad you did it. Check also Catch the Rainbow, the most delicate and amazing rock ballad.
Cozy did a lot of solo stuff. Would be good to check out 'Na na na,' or 'Dance with the Devil.' Both classic bangers.
Absolutely love this, never get tired of hearing it. Dio amazing voice.
Unreal!!! 🔥
That my friend, is the great Cozy Powell.
The bassplayer Jimmy Bain that was in the live video for the song Last in line that you reacted to also played on this album, he played on a number of the Dio albums, mainly the early ones.
COZY on Drums.... Blackmore on Guitar.....Dio nailing the vocals. This song is a classic. excellent upload bro 👍
Saw DIO in Rainbow, Black sabbath then his own band and everytime I saw him he just got better and better. What a voice,
Cozy Powell, had a number 1 single in the UK, Called dance with the devil. No lyrics just cozy front and center with a backup band.
Incredible voice right up to the time of his passing RIP
I saw Rainbow around 77, got the album still got the ticket and the top part of Blackmores strat which as the serial number on.
1:13 You should cover that powerful intro played by Cozy Powell!! All legendary drummers out of Liverpool, Blackpool, Birmingham, London, Leicester, Manchester, Sheffield, and Bristol in England 😮🔥
Check out Rainbows live version of “Still I’m Sad” in which Cozy does his drum solo, you will love it, I saw the Rainbow Rising tour in 1976, it was so good I remember it like yesterday.
Yes! Great cover of Yardbirds!
The 30 minutes version would be nice
I'm embarrassed to admit that I only starting digging into this band about a year ago. "Rising" is a banger start to finish. I mean, "A Light In The Black"....that's not even fair!
I still play my 1975 vinyl of stargazer couple times a week Still gives me goose bumps like when I was 15. Miss you Dio
You'd be, lucky to play a 1975 vinyl of Stagazer, it wasn't released till 1976.😂
@@CB-xr1eg fat fingers!😆🤘
Great reaction Steven! Cozy Powell is the drummer. He's a beast. As far as rock bands, Dio was in the band Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, solo as DIO, and Heaven and Hell, which is the Black Sabbath lineup. Checkout Rainbow Mistreated from this same concert. It may be Dio's best performance with Rainbow!
Thanks so much! This was so killer! Cozy Powell was throwing down!!! Dio’s voice is mindblowing every time I hear it! Absolutely UNBELIEVABLE! 🔥
Cozy was that rock star, dude beat the ever loving dog snot out of his drums but with so much flash and style, and he was a drummer through and through which is to say don't push the man, he will get punchy. Cozy is on my short list for dream band drummers, prolly just behind Keith Moon
Mistreated is a must listen from the 1977 Munich concert.
Supergroup of the 70s mate, RIP Dio 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I liked the first Rainbow album too,RBs Rainbow and the last 3 deep purple studio albums, burn, stormbringer and come taste the Even after Ritchie left Tommy Bolin was good although completely different,RIP all members who have passed.
You are one of the best reactors on RUclips.
Really appreciate the kind words!
This first iteration of Rainbow changed music. Metal and hard rock. The two songs on the B side of this album created neoclassical metal !!
Drums during the solo are key to making this work.
MAJESTIC
RITCHIE BLACKMORE on guitar, left Deep Purple in 75 to form this band
Ritchie was notorious for using very few guitar effects, except ones he invented himself. He used to use a reel to reel tape in between the pre-amp & main amp, on a twin loop. Thus the Tape Echo was born. His solo on this was mainly played on slide guitar, with reverb & the tape echo. In the 1960s whilst working as a session player he worked a lot with Frank Marshall (creator of Marshall amps). Ritchie wanted a second volume fitted on his amp & Frank built it to Ritchie's specs. So Blackmore not only invented the Tape Echo, founded Deep Purple & Rainbow, but also invented the Master Volume on amplifiers. Oh, and he invented scalloped fretboards as well ! Now if only the silly bugger had patented that lot !
Another drummer who played traditional and rock grip was Steve Smith from Journey. He plays jazz as well, phenomenal drummer! Check out his drum solo from "live in Houston 1981" concert!!! You won't be disappointed. Rock on!!
Appreciate the suggestion! Love Steve Smith and Journey! Such an amazing band!
Cozy Powell kicks ass on drums! Steve Smith that played in Journey (and Montrose before that) for years used a traditional grip, and I think his predecessor the great Aynsley Dunbar (Journey, Zapoa, David Bowie, Whitesnake, etc. ) did as well.
You have to review “Mistreated “ by Rainbow next!
Mistreated by Deep Purple is the original and has David Coverdale (Whitesnake) vocals!
The really good thing to come out of the reaction channel phenomenon is that proper musicians, truly talented musicians who became successful through hard work and dedication, not winning popularity on a TV show, are coming to the attention of people such as yourself. I’m 64, I grew up listening to Ronnie and Ritchie and so, during the Covid lockdown fiasco, it was out of sheer boredom that I began watching other people reacting to bands I was passionate about. I was actually really surprised that people I assumed would be well known to fans of rock were like manna from heaven, whereas for us, ahem, more mature listeners, this was music. We listened to talent like this in abundance. It’s why I’m still watching (select) reactions four years on. I also got my reward from the side bar when I’m reading reaction information…I was introduced to the band that has quite literally taken over my life, a band I truly believe to be, because of every aspect of their music, lives, personalities and humour, the best band I have ever heard. LOVEBITES.
Yeah we’ve covered a few Lovebites tunes here on the channel and they are unreal! Such a talented group! 🔥
Cozy Powell for the win! I would also suggest Mistreated from the Munich '77 show, completely live footage and they're all on their game, as usual. Don't forget the stuff Dio did with Sabbath as well...all so good. Thanks for the video.
A lot of the footage from this fan video is actually from that Munich live show which you might know but people that havent seen it doesnt of course.
Mr Blackmore 🎸🎸👏👍👍👍👍
Guitarist... The God that is Ritchie Blackmore... Founder of Deep Purple and Rainbow and godfather of neoclassical metal and hard rock 😊
Co-founder of Deep Purple (RIP Jon Lord)
You should now listen to A Light In The Black, it is the second part of this song cycle.
He was in Black Sabbath & also had his own band 'DIO.' He was excellent in concert. God rest his soul.
Cozy Powell's always been one of my fave drummers. Got to see them perform this live back in the day. My gen really did produce some of the greatest music of all time. I'm 61 and I still derive great sensations whenever I hear this music (although, my fave singer from Rainbow is Graham Bonnet, not Dio).
Funny thing....this particular drum intro was rated In the top 10 of rock song drum openings of all time. Check out Cozy Powell and his body of work. sadly he died in a car wreck
Definitely need to check out more from him! That intro was straight 🔥🔥
Dude, Ritchie Blackmore is a machine.... one of the best in world for sure !!!
Rainbow remains my favorite band. To really appreciate how good they were, check out the 1977 Munich concert. Songs like " Mistreated" and " Catch the Rainbow" are magical. So very good.
Thanks for the recommendations! Can’t wait to hear more from them! Phenomenal musicians! 🔥
bought this LP in 1976, been a top fave ever since, best rock LP ever made
Every singer that Ritchie Blackmore connected with became famous. Blackmore is the musical brains behind this.
One of the top 5 Metal songs of all time, for sure. Chills every time I hear this song. It NEVER gets old. You can't live without having Dio in your life. He's an absolute phenomenon - so much character, control, power, and emotion. You have to listen to everything he's done, especially the earlier stuff with The Elves, then Rainbow, then Black Sabbath, then his solo stuff, and the Heaven and Hell album. Also, yes, Cozy Powell is an absolute monster on the drums. Add in Ritchie Blackmore and you have total gold. Listen to "Rainbow Eyes", or even the lesser-known "Wonderworld" by Elf, "Egypt (The Chains Are On)", "Shame on the NIght", or "All the Fools Sailed Away", for example.
Was in Elf,and Black Sabbath
Ronnie James Dio was in Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath then solo, then Heaven and Hell ( Black Sabbath renamed )
Most epic song ever
