- Genesis - The Musical Box.
There are no words to describe the journey this song has just taken me on, except one - sublime.

They gave us so many great "songs" but I think that "The Musical Box", "Supper's ready" and "Firth of fifth" are their immortal masterpieces.
💯💯
When these five guys come in together..........they are second to none in the world of rock......JMHO
It"s so satisfying to see younger generations react positively to this. Good taste is not dead ! Thank you ! Keep on digging into their 70's work.
It's so great having those in previous generations who've grown up knowing this kind of music, sharing it with those of us who don't know it but want to learn - thanks.
The great Steve Hackett on guitar. Phil Collins on drums. Peter Gabriel on vocals and flute. Mike Rutherford on bas and bass pedals. Tony Banks on keys. Five incredible musicians in their most creative and innovative period. It was fun seeing you react to it. You're almost ready for Suppers Ready. Also Fountain of Salmacis from the same album as thi.
The road to Supper’s Ready is paved with gems ❤
They were all early twenties by then, most were born in 1950.... What a talent.
Thank you for the comment and this information, everyone of those band members are super talented. I'm gearing myself up for Suppers Ready - I start sweating just thinking about it 😂 (23 mins I believe!). I've added the other song you mentioned, to the list.
Tony and Mike on 12 strings in the intro
Tony and Mike on guitar as well.. also, this one was largely developed from guitar ideas written by Rutherford and their former guitarist Anthony Phillips who had recently quit the band..
The liner notes are essential for this one:
While Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor (8) was playing croquet with Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William (9), sweet-smiling Cynthia raised her mallet high and gracefully removed Henry's head. Two weeks later, in Henry's nursery, she discovered his treasured musical box. Eagerly she opened it and as "Old King Cole" began to play, a small spirit-figure appeared. Henry had returned - but not for long, for as he stood in the room his body began ageing rapidly, leaving a child's mind inside. A lifetime's desires surged through him. Unfortunately the attempt to persuade Cynthia Jane to fulfill his romantic desire led his nurse to the nursery to investigate the noise. Instinctively Nanny hurled the musical box at the bearded child, destroying both.
Thanks..I was going to try and explain it to him
"I've not heard anything like this before"🤣. Its so good all the early Genesis stuff. Fantastic story telling and amazing music. Keeps you interested alright!
Again when it's live it just sounds so much better. Steve Hackett still does this in its entirety on his live shows. The crescendo and power of the finish is amazing. Checkout a live version if you can.
I wish i could hear Genesis for the first time again.
So true!!
Story for sure... And just the beginning! 😱😁🔥🔥🔥
1971, 15 years old Genesis, YES, ELP, Pink Floyd Led Zepplin, Deep purple, Black sabbath, Hawkwind what a time to be a teenager.
You were definitely fortunate to be experiencing these bands in their prime!
For me the best song ever…cannot waste a week without listening to it..
@@piloupim4706 I can see how it would make any week better!
Can we just enjoy the fact that they were 20-21 years old when they wrote and performed this epic...
This album, Nursery Cryme, was rated as one of the best, original contributions to the rock scene in 1971.
You did it justice with your reaction!
Thank you for your comment, appreciate it. And yeah, it blows my mind to think of them early twenties coming up with something like this!
Salut Eric ! Idem pour moi ! Juste 67 ans ! Genesis est LA panacée ! 😍😍
There's a band, “The Musical Box”, who cover shows Genesis did from the early to mid-70s from the early 90s to the present day.
I've been to 12 of their shows where they cover 3 different Genesis shows over the last 30 years!
This band hails from Quebec and still plays shows in Europe and America. A must-see!
@@danielcote9386 wow, that sounds cool for sure! I'll keep an eye out for UK tours. Appreciate the heads up, Sir!
This my JAM !I LOVE IT!! ART Rock.
We meet again! Yeah, this is the one that got me into Genesis. How could anyone hear it and not love it? 😊
Nice, I'm glad we meet again. 🥰 Well, I have had people not care much for Genesis. And/Or Yes. I wonder some times if i can see and hear things in the world that other's can not. And if so, heck yes!! 😉💙🎵🎶🎶
I'm really loving this community!!!
Love to see someone that loves music, yet uninitiated to old Genesis hear it for the first time. Keep listening. It’s not something that you can wrap your head around in just one listening. It grows to be the fiber of your being.
I listen to the Musical Box and I hear everything that Iron Maiden eventually did, at least musically, not lyrically. The gallop, the drive, the energy. I love both bands, but Genesis was living rent free in someone’s head.
Their influence was wide. Live they were incredible. No one sounded like Genesis live.
I am sorry, but for me... (I am really sorry, if I hurt anyone with it) ...Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or Motörhead... I can´t understand... what´s heavy or metal in that? it´s always the same. That´s why Genesis always changed... otherwise they would have become ...someone of somehting...
@@dej1971 Genesis was fluid with their music. They were 5 writers, that for a flash of time, worked together. They were 5 amazing musicians that would have trouble finding something they couldn't play.
As far as the metal part goes, you have to remember the time. The bands you mentioned created the genre and would now regarded as tame as to where that genre progressed.
My initial comment was only trying to point out the segment in The Musical Box, the driving gallop, that Iron Maiden seemed to use in 50% of their music (to good effect ).
It´s like listening to it for the very first time after all these years! That´s what a good reaction like yours does to me! Thank you so much and enjoy the journey through Genesis work- it´ll take you to wonderful places and feelings, no disappointments for sure.
Thank you so much for your amazing comment. I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you had as much fun watching as I did listening to this epic song! I must admit, every time Genesis come up for me to review from now onwards I will be a mix of pure excitement and utter trepidation in anticipation of what they could be about to do to me 😂
Ah. The good old days of Gabriel's Genesis.
YUP......................you got that right...........:)
a proper ending. no fade-out... this is songwriting.
The best band imo. They were perfect at everything. Waiting for you to hear “The Cinema Show” by them. Thanks for the video
What a great reaction! Your responses to this fabulous music are just wonderful to watch. You are a real entertainer and I shall follow you more.
Genesis is so good at building musical tension.
It's one of my favorite all-time Genesis songs. I loved your reaction...after listening to this band since early 70's, I STILL LIVE IT!!!!!
@@alanfine9825 I'm not surprised, it is a fantastic song, craziest reaction I've done so far!
This one has pretty crazy visuals with costumes and everything if you watch a live version. Peter Gabriel loved his costumes in the early days.
Oh really, that's interesting. Not sure my brain could have taken the extra stimulus of visuals first time around 😂
@@MusicForTheSoulReactionsthe DEFINITIVE live video version is The Midnight Special on American TV… It’s amazing… and complete… but also make sure you check out the French TV version where Gabriel comes out in a red dress and Fox Head… both versions are absolutely brilliant.
@@johnmavroudis2054 Peter Gabriel sounds like a right character! Love it!
Your reaction is priceless! You do have to react to the live Midnight Special video to see how really crazy they could get back in the day.
If you want to switch gears from 70s prog, but still go on an intense journey, try "Three Days" by Jane's Addiction. They take you on a roller coaster ride, they're an alternative band late 80s/early 90s. Alternatve to cliche trashy hair metal bands. People who love good music love this song . Signing out, US Roady 1.
@@johnmavroudis2054the Midnight Special version skipped a part of the song, you can also notice Peter Gabriel didn’t seem aware of that because he is taking his flute to play it and put it back down like « ok we are going already there » 😅
I would rather suggest the Live at Shepperton studios instead

The creators of masterpieces, started with Stagnation and many like the Musical box followed. Passing my brothers room, hearing Genesis i was hooked.
From 1971 - 1977 Genesis operated on another level. Listen to "Dancing with the Moonlight Knight". Like no other.
Well.worth watching a live performance of this....they were very visual in the gabriel days..he acted out many of the songs...this 1s a highlight

Always happy to receive a comment of one of the Roadies 😁 Appreciate the time taken for your comment. It seems there is so much to check out with this band both audibly and visually. Can't wait.
Wonderful track.
Just a note : the pic on screen is over the band The Musical Box, who faithfully recreate early GENESIS. They have the approval of GENESIS members. I saw The Musical Box a few years ago in Birmingham. Excellent. They sound just like the original. When you feel up to it, check them out on RUclips. And obviously the early live GENESIS performances.
Technical brilliance You are now probably ready for the ultimate Genesis track Suppers Ready !

Love how much you got into this amazing song. Genesis IS a trip! (there are a lot of people now waking up to this band) You can listen to their music over and over again and hear more and more every time. Musical Cocaine. It is fun to see relive this neuron stimulating music with a first-timer. But there's more to come......trust me.
btw Phil does a great rendition of this on a fine video of the performance you must find. Live Knebworth 92 It is embedded in their 'Old Medley'. Genesis is even better LIVE.
(warning: this medley has sections from a ton of their best songs, so you may want to wait until you hear the originals first and check this video out later....HUGE crowd)
Really appreciate the comment - couldn't agree more with everything you said!
Can't wait for seing you react to Supper's ready 😅

I thought you'd enjoy that !! Check out from the same album : The Fountain of Salmacis . Another epic from these great song writers barely at the time in their 20's .
when you listen to this... with maybe 14 years... heavy metal and hard rock will mean nothing to you anymore. I am sorry... but I laugh about some things, people call heavy metal or dark metal or whatever... of course!!! I also love AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, ...but I never was such impressed and fan of it like... some people running around with black shirts and so on... the difference may be... Genesis put it as parts into the whole construction... it never gets boring
try the knife!
The Musical Box is also part of the Old Medley 😊, which was performed by the band on the 1992 We Can't Dance world tour. You should definitely watch the Earl's Court version, as in my opinion, it's just sonically sublime. 😀
Phil Collins on Drums 🥁

Hey Ronnie, thanks for joining the chat again, always good to hear from you. Thanks for the info. One of these days I hope the names of bands members that you guys tell me about might actually stick in my head - it's proving to be a sieve at the minute with it all 😂
Written and recorded by 5 twenty-one year-olds with extraordinary musical ability and creativity
Honestly, I just can't believe that - it bamboozles my brain! Incredible
Musical Box, maybe the best song written by Genesis, maybe the best tune written in our generation, but only maybe because there were 100+ tunes in the 70s that held their own.
@@Divedown_25 70s was definitely the golden era for music, without question!
The band members were early twenties when they made this. The band started at Charterhouse School, Goldalming, southwest of London.
Here's a bit of trivia for you: on that 2nd fast passage, after "and i touch her warmth", you might think those overlapping solo sounds like Steve's guitar all the way through...but it isn't. 😉 It's actually Tony playing his Höhner electric piano through a fuzzbox and creating call and response moments with Steve. He did this, whilst Genesis were performing as a four-piece after Phil joined and before they auditioned Steve. They were struggling to find a successor to their original guitarist, Anthony Phillips, who had left due to suffering from huge bouts of stage fright. So Tony bravely handled all the guitar parts on his keyboards during their search. That actually made him grow as a musician and taught him to play two keyboards at the same time.
For a brief time, they had a guy called Mick Barnard on lead guitar, who was good, but didn’t last long.
Wow, that's so interesting to learn. What creativity and skill that guy must have to do all that! That 2nd passage turned my brain to liquid 😂 Thanks so much for commenting.
@@MusicForTheSoulReactions While there was some “call and response,“ there was also a lot of mirroring. They were both playing… with Steve Hackett being one of the first rock guitarists to employ “tapping”… which years later made Eddie Van Harlan rich and popular.
Magnifico! The fantastic plucker that is Steve Hackett. Phil Collins really does get going on this one. Some genius keyboard work from Tony Banks too! Another great track off Nursery Cryme album is "Return of the Giant Hogweed".
With a song name like that, why do I expect another mind melting experience?! 😂 Added to the list
"White Mountain" and "The Knife" from the previous album are worth a spin. That was before "Phil Collins" was recruited.
Trespass is a wonderful album. They said no to being The Bee Gees and yes to their roots. Folk, classical, jazz, rock. But Phil added some spice to their sauce.
Added to the list my friend! Thanks for the comment
You've just started with Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes, but I would also add Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" live. These groups are truly the backbone of progressive rock and an IMHO an extension of the Beatles psychedelic sound - this was the golden era of the 1970's and 80's English music experimental wave. I lived it and the music is unmatched by anything this new world has to offer.
So jealous you got to live through this amazing period of music, what an experience that must have been! I feel lucky to be able to catch up now! Thanks for suggesting Dire Straits, I'll pop them on the list.
Priceless reaction😅
I was a hard core YES fan when I first began to hear some Genesis on the radio. I wasn't terribly impressed early on; I'd hear "moments" that sounded good, but then stretches of Gabriel doing his visuals performance thing. It wasn't until I heard *Squonk* that I began to get interested enough to buy a Genesis album. From that point on I was a big fan for several albums, until they "went commercial" with the pop song fetish.
Looking back, I wasn't even that big a fan of Supper's Ready. I mean, it had some nice stretches, but overall it was a bit tedious to me. The first of their songs that I thought was really great was *Firth Of Fifth.* This Musical Box was mostly meh to me, but I did like *The Cage* that showed up on a later album. When I first heard *Watchers Of The Sky* on the radio, I had _some_ mild interest, but it was only after I heard the song performed live by a cover band at some Club that I became super impressed. Genesis' best creations really do need to be heard at high volume to be appreciated.
Due to the breadth & depth of their creations during their peak Prog Era (after Peter Gabriel left) I became a big Genesis fan, which I consider the 2nd best ever Prog band after YES
True fact: Brian May heard the guitar sound at 12:10 and then made a career out of it. Love Hackett.
The astonishing thing is that Hackett is still touring and playing a lot of old Genesis music, along with his own music. I saw him in March, one of the greatest live musical evenings I’ve ever had. The man is a genius.
Sounds like a new convert to the cause!
At around the same age Lennon and McCartney were writing she loves you ,these guys at the same age were writing unbelievable 15-20 mins songs. Genesis is for me the greatest band ever, no one comes close.
@@davidtaylorbfd it's crazy isn't it! There was my ignorant mind for all those years believing genesis some cheesy band (based on no evidence), when actually I was missing out on some of the most talented individuals working together in music ever!
Yeah but if Lennon and McCartney didn't write she loves you, and then Sergeant Peppers and the White Album etc, there'd be not bands like this, or at least like this.
@@TreVader1378 I understand your point but Genesis took songwriting to another level.

@@NABIL7 for the love of god NO! Don’t listen to anything after Wind and Wuthering. 😱

I also discovered Nurcery Cryme retro after Selling England..., but a top album, although linguistically I had to work on these typically "English" songs. The Return Of Giant Hogwood and the live standard Fountain Of Salmacis are further album highlights; Actually the whole album is worth listening to and so are the next five studio albums.
Supper's Ready, Firth Of Filth etc ...etc are the popular ones, but they are so "verbate" musically that the genius phase of Genesis comes too quickly. The live album Second's Out is great, but when Steve Hackett left, the magic was gone for me: the alternating and equal playing between guitar and keys was missing.
P.S. the Rainbow concert in 1973 is awesome/rights?
Hey, thanks for the thorough comment, really appreciate it. I think I'm going to start right at the beginning with Genesis (amongst other bands) and go right through their catalogue, it seems the only way to ensure I cover absolutely every classic song they did and to experience their full, amazing range!
Mate, as I mentioned in your first Genesis reaction, one of my favorite bands ever. Where are you from by the way? Got to be the north somewhere yeah? But you're not Scouse doesn't sound like, right? I'm a Yank, but as a big football fan, I have lots of English mates and have a general idea about your various accents/dialects, lol. Back to Genesis though, it's a BIG rabbit hole. Saw you say you're doing Supper's Ready next. But I would say DON'T do the live version first. Personally, I always prefer a studio version on a first listen, just to pick up every nuance the band was trying to achieve. And it wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the short track before Supper's Ready called Horizons, which is a beautiful classical guitar piece by Steve, and do them together. Also great ones from the Peter Gabriel era are Fountain of Salmacis, Watcher of the Skies, Can Utility and the Coastliners, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, The Cinema Show, and the whole first album of Lamb Lies Down on Broadway lol (it was a double album). Highly suggest you do the songs/albums in chronological order roughly so you can hear the band's evolution and changing sound as it does change so drastically by the end.
How old were they when they made this? 21 - 22? Unbelievable, really.
Try "the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" for a double album journey through Peter Gabriel's mind. The music isn't bad either. "Carpet Crawlers" or 'The Lamia" are probably the highlights for me.
That seems to have had a few requests so seems a popular choice, it is on my list - I think my brain with be liquid mush by the time I get through all these prog rock bands 😂 Thanks for the comment
@@MusicForTheSoulReactions liquid mush perhaps, but your mind will thank you for it!
Musical Box?.......is both.....a bizarre ballerina thing (without the ballerina) and Pandora's box full of odd evils. These guys were often subtly avant-garde, sometimes overtly, but seldom failed to deliver a surprise. They get into your blood and may be why the fan base is so large and diverse. Great music with ambiguity. A puzzle to delight us. This one is no different.
Gabriel's Genesis up to The Lamb was prog at it's finest. Loved your reaction you are refreshing. Are you a Lancashire lad or Yorkshire ?
Just wait until you get your ears on the 4 sided album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. It is a complete musical journey about a poor boy named Rael in New York City!
That sounds intriguing! Although I'm worried my brain is going to leak out of my ears if Genesis subject me to much more of this mind-spangling work!!
While that is a great album, but in my very humble opinion, Nursery Cryme Foxtrot and Selling England by the pound are some of, not just greatest Genesis albums, but albums ever in general.
Yeah gotta do supper's ready.....gabriel era genesis...top notch our kid
Can my mind take it I wonder?!!!
This is the music that I grew up loving. There are very few bands that can play at anything close to this level. As I mentioned in a previous comment, you now need to enter into the live versions of their music. With that in mind, I will suggest again the medley based upon their masterpiece "In the Cage". The perfection that this band demonstrates live is beyond anything you will ever experience. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/_12_-jzqOlE/видео.html
