  • For this edition of the album club, we dive into the eternal classic sci-fi thrash veteran Voivod's 3rd album, Killing Technology! Should be a nostalgic stroll to other dimensions. Have you heard this album/band? Love or hate them? It seems it's always one way or the other with a band as unique as Voivod.

You guys are hilarious. Everything you said about this album is spot on. You knew the songs well and cared about the discussion and respected the material. Killing Technology is Voivod's first good album that I'd go back to.
Here's the thing about Snake's vocals: he wasn't the greatest singer, but he fit the style perfectly. He sounds like an alien who learned just enough English to tell us about the Voivod universe. And because he speaks French, every now and then he would use very non-metal vocabulary that sounded sophisticated in that context.
Voivod is the Rush of metal: a band many like but don't love, but totally respect for consistent uniqueness.
I discovered Voivod in record store in - of all places - a small Kansas town. Dimension Hatröss was new and the vinyl was on display. The cover art caught my attention. I turned it over and read some text in Away’s calligraphy about going into a particle accelerator and other dimensions. That intellectual sci-fi message, but metal? I bought it just due to that artwork and message.

I have to echo Kellen's impressions on Killing Technology and this band, though much of their output has grown on me.
Angel Rat is my favourite album. A truly great post-metal record, if there is such a thing, and a great listening experience.
They give me the impression of a punky metal version of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd.

I discovered Voivod when RRROOOAAARRR was released. I certainly dug their sound, but it wasn't until Killing Technology was released that I was forever ensnared by this truly unique band. I even saw them on this tour (with Kreator opening) at some small venue in Baltimore, that is of course no longer open. Long live the Iron Gang! 🤘🤘

My recollection of when I started buying Voivod is a bit fuzzy. I of course heard and liked them due to tracks from War and Pain on early Metal Blade comps, but I may not have bought a tape until Killing Technology. By friend Scott I think had the first 2 and I heard them at his place. Liked them of course. Thanks for watching.

The developed A LOT on this album. Perfected it (to me anyway) on Dimension Hatross. What an incredible album. Thanks for watching.

@@HeavyMetallurgy thanks for giving a shout out to Nothingface and the way the guitar and bass weave in and out and provide counterpoint to each other. Of Voivod's "Core 4" (KilTec-DimHat-NotFace-AngRat), Nothingface has been - aside from the two "hits" - the most difficult of the four albums for me to get into. I've only given it 2 listens all the way through though, so I will re-listen again soon.
The 3rd time through a Voivod album is usually the charmer also.

My family are from the same town as voivod. I grew up there every summer. To be there is To know exactly why VOIVOD sounded that way. Rough spot. Huge biker influence

Like Marty I was around back them and bought all their records, while I sort of liked them, they didn't entirely click until Nothingface. Then they became a favorite band of mine!

Killing and Dimension were the revelation "we are connected" albums for me, though I also loved the first 2. Rooooaaaarrrrr is a hard album to warm up to. So odd and hard driving/unrelenting. Thanks for watching.

I often saw Harris Johns as a contemporary of both Bill Metoyer (of Metal Blade) and Scott Burns (producer of so many Death Metal bands and arguably the progenitor of the Florida Death Metal scene)

Great point and I agree with you. Like the other 2 producers you mentioned, he was a product of his location and music scene. He was one of the few early on that "got it" and made sense of the new extreme sound coming out of Europe. Always a good sound. He put his stamp on that CLASSIC German thrash tone! Thanks for watching!

I think Kellen needs a different jump point into Voivod.... the early stuff is too much punk meets Motorhead & Venom on meth, and the evolution into "Killing Technology" kept the chaotic side, its not pure thrash, its more like Killing Joke or Jesus Lizard on high speed (those Piggy riffs are hard to play at those tempos without fucking up). He was punk-thrashing those King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator weird riffs.
So Kellen should start with the prog rock masterpiece "The Outer Limits" then drop back in time to "Nothingface" and maybe the Eric Forrest-era albums, then he will be able to wrap up "Killing Technology" in all its "Reagan Star Wars" magnitude.

Good point. It just feels like a tall order to recommend an album to someone on the fence in regards to Voivod. All of their albums may have different feels or influences creeping in, BUT they all sound so distinctively "Voivod". The FOrrest era might be a good idea. Phobos is a heavy and back to their core elements Voivod album. COULD HAVE been a solid follow-up to Dimension Hatross. Thanks for watching!

I don’t like Noise Rock or Noise Metal at all but love 1987-1993 era Voivod and their recent albums as well.

There was a lot of Venom in that early Voivod style, which means a sloppy, more metallized hybrid of punk. Hard not to appreciate the charm and uniqueness they brought to the table.
