Melanie Loves… Power Metal? What did I just say? Yes. Sometimes one has to slide themselves out of the gut barrel, hang up the gore adorned butcher coat and feel the sunlight on their crimson splattered face. Hammerfall is the type of gateway band that would do that for a person. Lighthearted. Fun. Melodic. Powerful heavy metal! And after 31 years and now 13 albums, they should have master clas...

Mainstream "metal" has never been less metal. These bands (Spiritbox, Knocked Loose etc) are pop or hard rock, hardcore, etc bands, and are not part of the heavy metal tradition. Borrowing metallic textures in the same way as Liturgy or Deafheaven did, for instance (both of whom explicitly said that they were not Black Metal), does not mean a band plays Heavy Metal music. Metal lives in the underground. It is not today what it could be, but the ethos is to be found there. The fact that there have not been any traditional heavy metal bands being commercially elevated in the last three decades does suggest quite a bit with respect to how people might not be given a chance to find the underground, because in this commercially-mediated culture, markets act as a barrier to finding the wide range of artistic practices going on throughout the broader society.

Having been a fan of hard rock and heavy metal since around 1980. I would say that there is a renaissance of sorts going on right now that most folks in the community are completely unaware of. And there are a number of all female bands and all female Japanese bands in particular that are currently on fire creatively and in musicianship. And that in future I won't live to see. A year in the five year stretch we are currently in the middle of will be widely hailed as one of the best years ever for hard rock/heavy metal as a genre. The impetus for this being the deaths of the current gate keepers and the retooling of what hard rock and heavy metal are as a genre in the eyes of future metal heads. Who will look back in 25 or 30 years and see some of these bands with album from the last few years as the giants they are.

Great topic guys and very interesting discussion. I will not be surprised if lady gaga or post Malone will do a rock album. Rock and country are interesting in the USA according to a recent study. Metal will stay a niche genre that will filled up small arenas of couple thousand max in the future. It will not end up in the AI gorge because of gate keeping, which will keep alive also the physical media

I don't hear new drummers that play faster than Pete Sandoval or Flo mounier ? How do you play faster than dead shall rise or slower than thergothon streams from heaven ? Can you out prog spiral architect or Dream theater ? There will be no more big stadium acts such as iron Maiden ,Metallica , Scorpions etr ... metal will go back to where it mostly belong the underground .

Awesome discussion! I just want to say that when I hear a band or artist say their "retired," they almost NEVER mean it and upon hearing it I rarely believe it. I mean, I'm sure Rush are done and they mean it, but if Alex and Geddy were to announce a show where they rotate Peart inspired drummers, I totally wouldn't be surprised.

I have a lot of thoughts about this, for context I am 22. I definitely see the rabid headbanger, metal all the time, type of fan going away among younger people relating to something Alan brought up. I pretty much sit in this realm still and Id say about 25% of my metal friends my age are also are like this. However, it is much more common to see people who have a wide array of tastes and not fully into any of them. Many kids today are into some old metal, some noise, some extreme metal, some goth, and some hardcore, but don't seem to be nerds about any one subset in particular. Another thing I see is younger metal fans have such easy access to obscure old metal without having a deep connection to Maiden, Priest, Accept etc. I know a couple of people who love Mindless Sinner, Manilla Road, and Tank, but are not rabid fans of the bands I previously mentioned. This may not apply to most young metal fans, but to a lot of friends around my age into metal. Another important thing of note, is that most young metal fans get into death metal and black metal first and either view classic metal as dad rock or learn to appreciate it later. I will certainly miss seeing Maiden, Priest, Mercyful Fate, Metallica, and Slayer in huge venues. And given my tastes, in 20 years I will not be attending "metal" shows in huge venues as these bands are no more. Any "metal" bands that fill these giants spots will not be to my taste (I really do not see the NWOTHM bands filling these shoes). Given the new bands who rehash ideas of old metal. Personally, I tend to be dismissive of the new death and black metal bands as I think these genres will thrive in the underground for a good time longer. On the other side, I champion the NWOTHM as I want to see these bands rise to headlining tours across 500 person venues, however this is likely wishful thinking. One thing that will be a bit annoying with the aging of metal is to what Alan said about Iron Maiden and Priest being "dad rock". When I tell someone my age I like metal, they assume Slipknot 75% of the time (a band I really dont deem metal) and Metallica 25% of the time. In 20 years time the public perception of what METAL is, will be turntables and jumpdafuckup riffs. At the end of the day, Metal was always meant for the underground. The 90s proved this. When Grunge was big, the wheat was separated from the chaff. There were those who threw their Ratt records in the trash and bought Nirvana CDs, and there were Alan and Marty who scored heavy metal classics for cheap when no one wanted them anymore. There will always be rabid headbangers I feel and as trends come and go these people won't change and others will. To me, as much as I like going to big heavy metal shows, Metal is about listening to records on your own and digging deeper for more and more similar sounding stuff. There will be young people that continue to do this, but the numbers will be smaller and smaller as time goes. In closing, whatever metal becomes in 2050 will probably be something I won't care about. I will stick to the sounds I love (70s rock, traditional, thrash, black, death) by myself and with those who want to sit in this pocket with me. Metal will always be revived and then die to the masses in various forms, but for some of us, as long as we are above the ground Metal will always be alive where its important, within our TRUE METAL HEARTS. Just my biased 2 cents Another great Metallurgy video!

Metallica: Either one of them croaks on stage and call it quits or they play till they literally can’t anymore. Priest: Rob will never leave the stage. You’ll have to drag him off lifeless. Maiden: They’ll call it quits by 2030. Sabbath: It’s already over. Maybe one more show again, but that’s it. Scorpions: See Metallica Anthrax: See Metallica Megadeth: See Priest Slayer: Milk the massive paychecks for two festival appearances a year until 2030. Those are my two cents. Also, fuck Ghost.

As for the accessibility issue, it's not just a matter of that, but of a general overload of impressions from scrolling social media streams that neurologically makes it impossible to focus and have in-depth experiences with music. This is supported by a massive amount of scientific research.

Very interesting topic. You guys had some great takes. Sadly I expect Slipknot, Disturbed etc. to be the next arena bands. But I hope Helloween and Blind Guardian can fill the void when Maiden and Priest hang it up and deliver some true Heavy Metal shows. As for classic that will stand the test of time my pick will be Operation: Mindcrime. Also a lot of early extreme stuff. I had a first hand experience yesterday. I work at a university and I noticed a kid who just started his first year wearing a Drop Dead shirt. Right around the corner there's a small monthly record show and I went there during my break. Right next to me at one of the stands that same kid picked up Reign in blood and Bathory's self titled. That's heart warming.

Hey guys. Sorry I missed you live for this one. Great job. I think that, unless you have a strong connection to a band as a live act, “legacy act” or “stadium band” doesn’t mean much to the longevity of a band. Even after retirement and death those legacy bands will still hold weight. I’m a teacher and had a high schooler who just came back to school telling me he “discovered Maiden” over the summer. Great bands will endure

The prevailing pattern seems to be that each generation listens to their bands and works their way back through history. It is very rare that they work their way forward, as you, as a middle-aged person, do not resonate with the new generations that come after you. This is why fans of Bob Dylan never listened to Iron Maiden, but later found Woody Guthrie, and so future generations will repeat the same pattern.

Happy Birthday Alan 🤘. The legacy bands in a live setting aren't worth watching 90% of the time. People are going just to cross them off their bucket list. If they aren't young and hungry and able to give it their all I don't tend to be interested.
