Absolutely! The first few songs I heard by them I didn’t like at all but came back after a few years of not hearing anything of theirs and suddenly it “clicked” for me. A big part of it was realizing that Snake’s vocals were intentionally dissonant, at first I couldn’t stand them!

I’m really glad you enjoyed this one Nick, I was sure you would but good to have my suspicions confirmed! Voivod was a very unique band, I threw you in at the deep end a bit here with their longest song ever but it’s one of my favourite tracks of theirs.
Funny you made a joke since this album actually came out before I was born (‘95). The band has been around since 1982 and this was their 7th album.
Their guitarist, Denis “Piggy” D’Amour had a very unique style incorporating all kinds of dissonant chords which I find really cool. He unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2005 but he remains one of my favourite guitarists ever.
The drummer, Michel “Away” Langevin, is fantastic too and a founding member alongside Piggy. He also designs their album art and logos and writes a lot of the lyrics, which are often Sci-Fi and space-themed.
They’ve had a few different bassists over the years who have all been great. Jason Newstead (of Metallica fame) even played on a few albums!
Denis “Snake” Bélanger on vocals started off doing exclusively harsh vocals on their first few releases, which are much more in a (mostly) straight-forward Thrash style.
With their third album, “Killing Technology”, they started to incorporate more Progressive elements along with clean vocals, which were similar to Piggy’s guitar parts in terms of dissonance. By the time of “The Outer Limits” they had streamlined their sound a bit more and that has slowly evolved over time while still remaining uniquely their own style. Their last few albums have moved back to heavier territory, the most recent one came out this past February (2022) and it’s great! I love to see old bands still putting out awesome music.
Overall these guys are one of my favourite bands of all time and I would be extremely happy if you decide to cover some more of their songs on the channel. My suggestions would be “Killing Technology”, “Tribal Convictions”, “Into My Hypercube”, “Missing Sequence”, “The Prow”, “Obsolete Beings”… ok, I’ll stop. They have so many awesome ones.
As you can see I could talk about these guys all day, thanks again for checking them out Nick and for everything else you and Lex do here. Your videos always brighten my mood!
Take care and rock on! 🤘🤘

I'm jealous that you beat me to the punch Erik! 😛 Almost bought them the CD last year too, because its one of those albums that must be heard for any Prog Metal fan. Especially this track. Voivod are hit and miss with me as they definitely can be unconventional, and Nick will be quite surprised to hear their earlier material. I don't know their last 4 albums at all, so I'll have to check them out :). And I was born . . . eh em, 1963! When Dinosaurs ruled the earth 😅.
Added my own 2 cents in a comment as well, but I see you and others did too :D.

@@mvunit3 Well, a lot of folks your age would never listen to Voivod in a million years if that makes you feel any better…🤷‍♂️
And my parents are both older than you as well. They never liked any kind of Metal, even stuff like Sabbath or Rush is too much for them. However, they exposed me to lots of great stuff as a kid which made me a music but for life. Mostly Classical music but The Beatles, Chicago, Neil Young, The Guess Who, Elton John, Billy Joel, Simon & Garfunkel, BTO and Lighthouse are some of my dad’s other favourites. Eik, how I appreciate your passion for this band. I'm 64 and have been listening to these guys since Dimension Hatross was released. I'm from Cleveland and saw them live during their Nothingface tour. I am so glad you got Nick to listen to my favorite Voivod tune, Jack Luminous. What a jawdropping, amazing piece of music. So many changing passages and so many tricks that Piggy had up his sleeve. To which I have to say that sometime after Piggy passed, the band got ahold of some Piggy DNA, ran it through that Hypercube and out came Chewy. Another breakneck musician who pulls Piggy from his back pocket all the while retaining the Chewy sound. Snake and Away are still in prime form today, while the bassist (sorry his name escapes me at the moment) fills the bottom end beautifully. They are a band like Coroner, appreciated by musicians but relatively unheard of outside those circles. Nick, you keep on doing what you are doing (I very much include Lex here). Your reviews/reactions are terribly honest and heartfelt!

At the time of 'Jack Luminous', Voivod were: Denis "Snake" Belanger: Vocals. Denis "Piggy" D'Amour: Guitars, Michel "Away" Langevin: Drums, and Pierre St. Jean: Bass.
Fair warning, this is Voivod at their most family friendly. If you think this is wild, dig back into their catalog into albums like ''Nothingface', 'Dimension Hatross', 'Killing Technology' and 'War and Pain'. Voivod are like no other, punk, prog, and hardcore thrash metal basically chopped up and thrown into a blender. That's not a diss. That's a compliment! It takes real vision and real faith in that vision to be this crazy; and a frak ton of talent to pull it off and make it look this easy! TO THE DEATH!

There's just so much great music out of Canada in a lot of genres it's hard to pick. @@erikberg5363 Be warned though, they aren't rock or metal. Ritchie Hawtin is a techno artist who dabbled in and contributed to many styles. His highest acheivement IMO is in minimalist techno under the moniker of Plastikman. His masterpiece in that area would be the album Closer. Super deep, heavy and dark, and extremely (shockingly?) minimalistic. Somehow it's super engaging and immersive.
Skinny puppy is the most important band in the evolution of industrial music. Creating the electro-industrial subgenre, which has led to a huge variety of other styles. Early stuff is very dance goth type stuff, but with some cool song writing here and there and the burgeoning of very interesting sounds to come.
I'd say their mid-era output is the best. The albums VIVIsect Vi, Rabies, Too Dark Park and Last Rights might interest you. Dark, disturbing, filthy, desperate, experimental with some very memorable and "catchy" tracks in that bunch. The song Worlock is a great starting point and if you really want to hear some apocalyptic stuff I'd recommend the album Last Rights.
NIN as we know it would definitely not exist without Skinny Puppy.

I adore this song. This album was my soundtrack to life in 96. I was even fortunate enough to see them live that year and meet Piggy. Extremely polite and friendly. An absolute legend of guitar in my opinion. As unique as he was it’s mind blowing to hear them now with Dan the new guitarist. He sounds like a modern Piggy because he understands the Voivod musical language to an uncanny degree. Voivod can be a life affirming experience if your ears are open to it. The rich history will guarantee an un unparalleled musical journey through alien worlds…by the way there is a video on YT of Dan pulling this off live with the band. Fantastic!!!!…and a video of him knocking out a Holdsworth solo note for note perfectly. That’s the level of musician capability we are talking. Another thing of note is the drums are programmed by the drummer. This is a drum machine, I didn’t know that for years. Lastly, there is a song on The Wake called Sonic Mycelium where Dan brilliantly reprises some of this song into a new composition. It’s really quite something to hear and it hits me square in the heart when I hear that because that could only be accomplished with love. Great reaction my bro…keep up with the real stuff like this regardless of how popular it may be.

THIS album is very much a more cohesive album than the ones before. As those were a bit heavier, thrashier, but SUPER unique because Voivod were different than all the _other_ bands. But this was truly their "Prog Metal" album (maybe the album "Nothing Face" from 1989) inspired by the _other_ "Twilight Zone" type of series, from 1963 "The Outer Limits".
I have the original print of the CD, and it came with a miniature pair of 3D glasses in order to view the booklet art. ALL the art is created by the drummer Michel "Away" Langevin.

    Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy (1996 Title-track) 20:42 / Power Metal/Symphonic Prog Metal

    Opeth - Still Life (1999)* 62:31 / Death Metal/Progressive Death Metal
These were _some_ of the 1st bands in Metal to do Epic _longer_ conceptual pieces or entire conceptual albums* before many now famous bands - as these bands may have inspired the later trend along with Dream Theater, Symphony X and many others. So take note on the bands you mention, and look at the years of each bands year release. These guys were all ahead of their time.
Its been awhile to listen to this track and the whole album, but its like I heard it yesterday. I'm reminded how awesome "Away" is on the drums, and the sound of the snare!
So Erik Berg beat me to the punch! But I'm glad there are more fans out there of this and the FANTASTIC album. Lets see if I can find something to add to it in the future. For now, this and many others, that I ironically put together in a unique series of playlists that I haven't shared with you Nick (but may give you "ideas" for marathons or individual tracks to checkout) from a few years ago:

A few additions to your list of longer conceptual pieces/entire conceptual albums (they didn't show up in your playlist, but perhaps you already know them):

Sieges Even - Straggler From Atlantis (1988, album: Life Cyle) 12 1/2 min / Progressive Thrash Metal
Candlemass - Tales of Creation (1989, entire album) 43 min / Doom Metal
      Helstar - first 6 songs (incl. 1 intro + 1 instrumental) on their album Nosferatu (1989) 24 min / Power/Speed Metal
Mekong Delta - Dances of Death (1990, title-track, composed as a rondo) 19 min / Progressive Thrash Metal
Sieges Even - Tangerine Windows of Solace (1990, album: Steps) 25 min / Progressive Metal
The 3rd and the Mortal - Oceana (1994, album: Tears Laid in Earth) 19 min / Atmospheric Doom Metal (with clean female vocals)
Dreams of Sanity - Komödia I-IV (1997, album: Komödia) 37 min / Symphonic Gothic Metal (feat. two female vocalists)

I KNEW I'd forget a few, but didn't learn of Sieges Even till their LAST 2 albums when they debuted (and hadn't heard "Life Cycle", till hearing it on a Prog Rock/Metal Internet Station in the early 2000's). Mekong Delta, Candlemass, Helstar, I know as well! The Helstar track I have on a "Halloween" Playlist :).

@@mvunit3 You're welcome! "Tears Laid in Earth" by The 3rd and the Mortal as well as the preceding EP "Sorrow" are very similar in style and when I listen to them, I usually do so with headphones and closed eyes to fully dive into the music. The next 3 releases "Nightswan" (an EP), "Painting on Glass" and "In This Room" feature a different female singer who sometimes goes into a more experimental direction, whereas the music becomes more ambient for the most part and can't really be considered metal anymore. Their fourth album "Memoirs" features different male and female singers and the style in one review was described as musique noir. Their final album "Project Bluebook" features three new songs and five live versions of previously released songs, which partly sound like new songs - which I like very much. A very special band , which I think would also fit on this channel.

Voivod are a great band. It's a pity they didn't follow up with a "next Jack Luminous" but they bring the same kind of originality to the usual, slightly shorter songs they've created.
For a non-metal band I've probably suggested here before with a Voivod connection being that they're one of the favourite bands of the new Voivod line-up's guitarist, Dan Mongrain, who also have a fairly small collection of "long enough" songs (since when it's good you want it to go on a bit), you might want to try *Cardiacs* one day (also not a band that's going to get you lots of views, but which will give you a big kick if you're in the right mood on the day). It's hard to describe their music, because they've tended to be quite uncompromising in using the "genre" that works for what they're trying to achieve from song to song.
One of their most "progressive" songs is *The Everso Closely Guarded Line* (about 8 min long). There are more keyboards and saxes in it then guitars, and to my ear there's at least a little bit of "20th century classical" in it, at times (i.e. it gets nice and weird - fairly weird at times, anyway - not like anything you're going to hear on Top of the Pops, for instance.)

I picked up their album Nothingface on a whim in 89/90 simply based on the awesome album cover. No regrets for sure. An all time classic, and I imagine still must be their best album. Any song on it would be worth reviewing. I got the previous album, Dimension Hatröss, after that. Also good. More raw, for sure. Angel Rat came out in 1991 and was a bit more, shall we say, streamlined. I was somewhat disappointed at first, but it's still a good album. The song "Freedoom" is a good ballad-like track. The song you just listened to was from The Outer Limits. Some more straight forward tracks here also, but also some proggy stuff like this one.
I actually saw them on tour for this one. I hate to say it, but it was one of the worst concerts I ever went to. Far too loud, for one thing. I can't remember much beyond that. Chris Poland's (ex-Megadeth) band Damn the Machine opened and was also unimpressive. Bad day maybe? (Not sure them or me!)
After that album I lost track of them, but rediscovered them with their 2013 album Target Earth. I don't know what their albums between 1993 and 2013 are like, but this release is surprisingly (?!) great as well. Looks like they've had two albums since then that I might need to check out.
    Keep it up!

The thing I really, dug about Voivod is, they cited progressive rock bands like King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator, and of course Rush and ELP as influences, along with Venom, and Slayer. I was getting into Voivod along with that stuff, as well as Genesis and Soft Machine. Still love all that. Guitarist "Denis D'amour ("Piggy"), sounded like Robert Fripp doing thrash. Which really turned me on. The weird atmosphere in their tunes, along with the aggression, is exciting stuff to listen to. Ummagumma, on steroids. RIP "Piggy"

@@carlosmachucabustamante2965 - "Into the Everflow" was the 1st time hearing them from a blind purchase I bought used at a Warehouse Record Store close to home many years ago :).
I was always on the lookout for "interesting" music, so I got it based on the cover and titles of songs - I was BLOWN AWAY by the music, soon after started looking for their catalogue, and have their latest album too, and a limited Box set. Their debut I found at a place called "Blue Meanie" (San Diego county), and when I asked if they had it, a guy behind the counter said; "Yeah! Let me go get it!" He must have had it at his home because it took a bit of time while I was looking through their bins. He came back with it and said my thanks and goodbyes.
I realized months later, it was the drummer "Norm Leggio", and I could have gotten his autograph, he "owned" the store :p.

The Outer Limits however holds a special place for me. For an almost unknown album the sound is absoluty fantastic and each song is a gem. It's a blend of faniliar hard-rock, heavy metal, prog, kraut and psychedelic, yet it's also entirely it's own thing. I don't know of anything else quite like it. My first album by Voivod was "Dimension Hatröss" in 1988 and they are one of very few bands from way back then whose new albums I still buy. OK, I skipped "Katorz" and "Infini" after their self-titled album was a mega-disappointment for me, but since "Target Earth" (which is among my faves now), I've bought all new releases. Voivod have IMO a very special/unique sound which makes them immediately recognizable, which already goes for their very early Thrash Metal releases. My overall favourite albums by them are still "Killing Technology" (for me the best and most elaborate of their Thrash Metal albums) and "Nothingface" (my favorite of their progressive albums - I like the clearly audible bass lines -, and I also like their cover of "Astronomy Domine" on that one better than the original), followed by "Dimension Hatröss", "Target Earth" and "Phobos" (one of two albums featuring a different vocalist). All in all, a very special band, and nice to see how much you enjoyed them (as well as a few others who - as their comments suggest - weren't familiar with them, either).
