Fab that Voivod has arrived at your attention. Angular and uneasy listening is the Canadian oddballs. If there were anything else, it wouldn't be Voivod. RIP Piggy.

    I thought "YEAH VOIVOD!!!"
And then, immediately after I got it is late Voivod: "OH NOOO!"
Not because they are not good, but I think you need to have some evolution of this band as a context. Voivod evolved from only one band: Voivod.
They were strange to begin with. And different from everything else. As avant-garde as King Crimson. Or Frank Zappa. Or Beethoven. Or freejazz.
Everyone who heard them or watched them in their early times had kind of an enlightenment.
Oh - you can do things like THAT???? in metal?
Love 'em or hate 'em. But appreciate their divined creativity.
If you mention Voivod in interviews with all kind of grunge or rock or metal or extreme metal musicians, and if the musician was ever at a Voivod concert, you get the same answers.
Unforgettable experience. Mindfuck. Messed with what I thought music should do. And everyone who wants to be taken seriously as a metal musician has to give kudos to them. Period.
Seriously, these guys are like: Give me some rules, so I can break them.
I love them for this attitude, and they still have it. WTF brass? WTF a drummer with a Bauhaus tee? You know there is something gonna happen, and you have no clue what turn they will make and when.
They were always like this. Something sounds melodic and beautiful? How can we fuck that up? It sounds harmonic? Let's make it disharmonic. Sounds familiar? Make it less familiar.
    Voivod is art.
Love your reaction. This is so honest. Your face tells the whole story, LOL. Do they mean what they are doing? Heck yeah. They do. Are they serious? Maybe. Probably yes. Does this sound like jazz, a march, a hymn and psychosis with the totally hyped brass? Is this even allowed by the metal police? Uhm, yes, yes and probably yes, and no, and I don't know why they do it. (Seriously, never heard that before from Voivod, but I am not surprised by anything with this band. Or everything.)
They showed the extreme metal guys that there are no rules if you don't accept them.
So reassuring for everyone who tries out utterly strange things in metal. The world would be so much less experimental in metal without them. People say you can't do that in metal? VOIVOD. YOU CAN.
You should probably listen to some very early Voivod to get, that they always went their very own way and never stopped doing that. They are literally covering themselves in new and strange ways all the time. Of course, when they were younger, they had a bit more anger. And were a bit more anarchistic. And they somehow did get, that they were doing something new, and that they should continue to do exactly that and listen to nobody else in terms of criticism. And I f*ing loved that, and so did most of my metal friends of that early time. We had no clue what they were doing, but we were sure that it's great.
Oh, that was so appreciated. Thank you for doing this band.
All the best, my wonderful Scottish dudette, and have a great start into the new week!
    🤘😎❤❤❤

"What in the abyss is going on?". Miss, we Voivod fans have been asking that question since their first album! ^_~ Other must hear Voivod tracks, "Tribal Convictions" and "Bran Scan" from 'Dimension Hatross', "Forgotten In Space" and "Tornado" from 'Killing Technology', and finally, "Panorama" and "Angel Rat", from 'Angel Rat'. This is just a sampler, fellow fans, don't hate, I don't have all night to write this comment! ^_~
Voivod have never sounded anything like any other band in any genre I've ever heard. There is only one Voivod. RIP, Piggy! TO THE DEATH!

Keeping it weird: Mr Bungle and Fishbone are essential.
Weird in a different way is Nanowar of Steel with tracks like "Norweigian Reggaeton" or "And then I noticed that she was a gargoyle".
Oh, and Electric Callboy are another kind of weird.

100% respect to you for looking at Voivod. Some folks chase views like their very lives depended on it so only react to big name bands. You are happy to explore music that is outside the norm (and these guys have always been out of the norm).
I have loved these guys for years, seen them live a few times and to be honest have never understood much of any of it😂. Interesting, fun, challenging and probably bonkers, but hell they are good. Loved your reaction, honest and fair, that is what I want to hear from a reactor. Thanks again and more strength to your elbow (not sure how that helps you as a singer as I am not a doctor!)

I got the honor to have directed the music video for Voivod : The End of Dormancy. We were hugely inspired by the amazing documentary about slime mould The Creeping Garden. There's even a few timelapse that are straight out of the movie. There is also a touch aout the Baltic Sea Anomaly and deep underground UFO/ALIEN conspiracy.

The addition of brass was an unusual decision even for Voivod! They've had many different periods over the years though, so I can't say I'm totally shocked either. That being the case though, you may like some of their other work better. Personally, my favorite record of theirs is Phobos. Whenever I put that one on, I have to listen to the whole thing, it's as perfect an album as they have ever done and is something I always have to revisit when I'm on a Voivod kick.

Reactions of your reaction are really positive!
Like someone mentioned, the original version has no brass. But Voïvod recorded this EP after having done a special show at the International Montreal Jazz Festival with an entire brass section.
I could have chosen an earlier track, but I think to this day, they are still relevent and unique.

Thanks for this. I’ve never heard this band before today but this has my curiosity peaked. I love the use of brass and metal and I would highly recommend giving another band called thank you scientist a listen. There are a little bit less on the heavy side, but they use a trumpet, a violin and a saxophone along with the regular rock/metal instrumentation, and they sort of incorporate more jazz into the music which I think you’ll appreciate.

I'm a huge Voivod fan from their early days of Killing Technology and Nothingface, before guitarist Piggy passed away. With modern technology he actually recorded music in the hospital for the next 2 Voivod albums that were released after his death. I actually like how forward the horns are in this recording because they seem more jarring that way. A lot of Voivod's music has that same jarring appeal to it. but they definitely are an acquired taste.

Voivod are just incredible...would love to see you react to 'Angel Rat', 'Missing Sequences', 'Tribal Convictions', 'Le Pont Noir' or the epic 'Jack Luminous'. Such an amazing band, like a heavy metal counterpart to fellow Canadian masters Rush in that no two albums ever sound the same and each one uses the previous one as a launchpad for whatever the fuck is going to happen next.

Hey Melisa. Interesting choice. I could never get into Voivod, so I just gave up on them. But I actually enjoyed this track. And speaking of strange, I highly recommend a band called Pan.thy.monium, one of many many projects of the super talented Dan Swanö. Specifically a track called The Battle Of Geeheeb from their "Khaooohs & Kon-Fus-ion" album. And if you think that's strange, wait til I suggest something even more bizarre 🤪 Have fun! 🤟

Nice choice, not many reactors react to this French Canadian group. They're not strange per se, just different, they're one of the first Industrial/Progressive Metal bands following in the style of Ministry, speaking of, Jesus Built My Hotrod is a good reaction choice too. Bands like Ministry and Voidvod led to Nu-Metal bands like Slipknot & In This Moment and Industrial/Melodic Death Metal like Rage Of Light. Seriously, check out Rage Of Light's 2.0 or Lead The Riot. Please.

The only similar band to Voivod that i can think of is Alchemist, an Australian metal band that unfortunately no longer exist. I say similar but then again, the only similarity would be that they share the same level of strangeness. For more strangeness, i also recommend the Norway black / prog scene with Borknagar, Arcturus, Ulver.

You can't get anymore Avant Garde than Voivod.
I agree with you that the brass was pushed too far in front of the band.
But NO ONE does Voivod, except the brave.
To me, their first 3 albums are their best albums, War and Pain, RRRROOOOAAAARRRR, and Killing Technology.
But Voivod should be applauded or exploring new ways to make their brand of music.
    Well done.

This is 1989 or so, absolutely amazing diverse show voivod where indeed the strangest band to emerge from the thrash scene of the middle 1980s, and their early stuff is considered unlistenable buy some purists but I think it's wonderful super crazy and dissident and Jazzy and musically incompetent all at the same time but.... they got really damn good overtime I'm glad that they are still out there
