Voivod's the kind of band where if you don't like one album, you can always try another one, because each album has it's own sound.

The best thing about Nothingface is it’s Prog Metal without even really trying to be. Other prog Metal bands like Symphony X or even Dream Theater sound like they’re trying too hard. This album is more organic. I suggest continuing with the entire album, or at the very least the Pink Floyd cover.

One of my favorite albums of all time and a 2-3 times a year, guilty road trip pleasure. The bass, guitar, drums are phenomenal. Snake's quebecois new-wave punk vocals grate a lot of people the wrong way. I personally cant imagine that album with anything else

The first time I listened to Voivod I didn't think much of it either, to truly appreciate them I think you have to get used to their weird sound and analyze their musical progress going from being a standard thrash metal band to a very unique technical and progressive band, also they're very influential, they were one of the first metal bands to make sci-fi concept albums and use dissonant chords, bands like Gorguts and Vektor owe a lot to Voivod

I went through a big thrash metal phase in jr high school and bought "Rrrroooaaarrr" on vinyl when it came out. Killing Technology was a major step forward and became one of my favorites. A year later, I had moved on from thrash to the likes of Dinosaur and the Butthole Surfers and lost touch with Voivod. By the time Angel Rat came out, I decided to get it and really liked it. I was shocked by the change in their sound, yet totally impressed by the songwriting and their growth and fearless journey into proggier waters. These days, they've somehow been able to combine their various styles over the years into a kind of genre of its own. I don't listen to much thrash these days, but Voivod has continued to impress me and remain a top metal band in my book.

Voivod sounds like nothing else. To decide how much you like them or not, you probably need to listen to quite a lot more. Give it time. I think they might grow on you. (And I think you'll find that bands they remind you of sound that way because of Voivod, rather than the other way round. They're one of those bands that once upon a time had a following that included a higher proportion of musicians than most bands have in theirs. Dave Grohl was pretty much obsessed with them as a kid, for instance.)
"Away" is a graphic artist by training. He did all their covers (and probably the early videos, too), and had a big influence on the "voivod story" they built the early band around. In this world, a voivod is a Polish baron - something like a marcher lord, I think; but in their sci-fi world a voivod is an alien vampire overlord.
They started out very poor, and under strong pressure to "stop their nonsense, and go get a real job", but they were persistent. In those days they survived longer by all sharing a single studio apartment, and living off things like dog food. (OK, maybe the dog food is exaggerating, but they made do with little to enable them to endure longer than they otherwise would have. Only place the dog food is a viable food source used to be Aussie, where at least in the olden days, it was all kangaroo, so actually "quite good tucker".)
They're still going! Keep an eye out for them!
(They also don't just have one sound. Everything they do sounds like Voivod - even today, which is a kind of miracle, since they had to replace "Piggy" on guitar, and were lucky enough to have "Chewy" turn out to be able to fill his boots. Everything they do sounds like Voivod, but it's an ever changing Voivod. Their very earliest stuff was among the very earliest of thrash metal, for instance.)

Voivod rarely score big but they always seem to be striving for a sweet spot somewhere in the middle of punk, prog and metal and have to be commended for that. Further investigation is worthwhile.

Personally, I love Voivod, and have been a big fan since their second album.. sure, Snake is no Freddie Mercury, but that style wouldn't fit with the discordant nature of their music. As you mentioned, the rhythm section is fantastic, and also the late Denis 'Piggy' D'Amour (RIP) was an innovative riff master and a fantastic outside-the-box lead player. My very favorite album of theirs is the one before this, called 'Dimension Hatröss' (you should check out Tribal Convictions & Chaosmöngers, at the very least, even if just on your own time), but they are still making fantastic music to this day. Definitely worth your time diving into, based on your reaction to this.

"Pre-Ignition" is definitely the track to check out. It is, to me, the ultimate Voivod song in terms of the music, number of changes, lyrics & story (high on the sci-fi elements). My personal favorite on this album; never gets old and I've been listening to this album (and most of Voivod's early stuff) since it was released!

I LOOOVE this song, and album, and band. Voivod rules and Nothingface is imo their best early album. They're one of the original prog metal bands alongside Fates Warning. Snake's singing may take some getting used to, but once you do, there can be nothing else for this music.
From what you said, it sounds like you may prefer the previous album, Dimension Hatross.

I believe I saw this band play their very first “big show” in front of an audience, if I’m not mistaken. They opened for Mercyful Fate on the Don’t break the Oath tour at the Montreal Spectrum. Denis had a much thicker French accent than he does now. Piggy was on guitar. He died some years later. Maybe someone can correct me it my memory is fading. I thought that they needed some more time in the oven then but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

How cool that you chose to do a reaction to this great Progressive Thrash Metal band from Canada. The whole album is great - they do a very good cover version of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine". This album was by far the most accessible by the band at this point in their career and this continued on the next couple of albums. Those three albums are vastly different to the rest of their catalogue which is typically more brutal/extreme. The albums leading up to this album are also great, just don't expect the same sound or production value.

it is a you problem... this is an album that was recorded in DDD... which is rare.. and the drums are meant to be robotic... I hate say it is hard to view this now compared to when this came out... it was revolutionary. not shading... your view is view which is great... Away (the drummer) does all the art, his mind of what would make the sounds of lyrics... the album to me is "dry" because of the DDD recording.. but I think that is what the band wanted and they collaborated with Syd Barret (pink floyd) for this album (Syd was and is under psychiatric care)

I liked the first thirty seconds or so... it led me to expect some kind of slow, heavy, sludge-tastic monolithic wall, sweeping away all that it encountered with low bass notes and a glacial pace.
    Then it changed.
Not for me beyond the initial promise.

Never heard of them. But can't say i'm impressed with this. Rather bitty, stark, and discordant. The solo was adequate, but certainly nothing special. Worst though, the vocals... And dodgy vocals is always a bit of a killer re a band for me. Music-wise, this could be their weakest tune, and the next one a blinder. But if all the tunes are accompanied by this voice I won't be lasting long.

    • @lemming9984

It's funny about the voice. I've listened to Voivod since 1987 and never had a problem with his voice, nor did anyone I knew (that is, anyone who would remotely be into the band - which back in 1987 were not a lot since Voivod were much more extreme back then 🙂). It's only recently I've heard his voice mentioned as a problem. I guess it's an acquired taste.

    • @slaydesaid8741
      @slaydesaid8741 11 месяцев назад +2

@@lemming9984 Well, thrash metal, which Voivod was categorized as back then, was a mix of heavy metal and punk, so punk-ish vocals wouldn't be out of place here.

Their cover of pink floyds astronomy domine is great, other than that though i agree the voice is the issue here. I think Fates Warning - Guardian is a much better representation of Prog-Metal.
