Tree missed one thing in this video by not highlighting how Randy Johnson ended up winning the 2001 World Series with Arizona, the same year that the Mariners had their 116-win season.
@@FelipeYoshioCordeirodeSouza But that Randy played for before he went to Arizona. You can't tell me that the '01 Mariners wouldn't have been that much stronger with The Big Unit in their rotation.
Urinating Tree I want to say thank you. This video needed to be made. I’ve been a Mariner fan for my entire 25 years on this earth and while I love this franchise, failure is all we are capable of. Wasting careers, wasting money and hits below the waist. Hopefully the legacy can be broken soon but there is so much that was failed and no signs that we are improving. Hopefully our tank now will get us on the right track. One thing I would have added. The year we drafted Dustin Ackley, we had the number two pick. The Nats had the number one pick and took Strasburg. With tiebreakers for the picks the difference was less than a game. On the final game of the season before the Mariners won off a walk off slam by catcher Rob Johnson guaranteeing us the number two pick...
I'm a Red Sox fan and we're about to be in a similar boat. The Sox were so bad last year they had the #2 pick in the bag....then in late September rookie Tanner Houck and trade pickup Nick Pivetta combine to go 5-0 and the Sox ended up with the #4 pick. The two Vanderbilt pitchers Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter look like total studs and the Sox could have had one of them, instead THEY GET...NOTHING!
Having lived in WA from 2003-2014 it was agonizing watching them, but it was amazing watching Ichiro. Also Felix's perfect game was a highlight. Also the stadium is fantastic.
I personally find this video and the one released by Jon Bois to be almost beautiful in how they starkly contrasted when viewing the Mariners. Tree reviled in the pessimism, grime, and flaws of the void, yelling obscenities at it for its rightful mockery. Bois, on the other hand, found a distinct beauty in the void. It was as if observing all of the heartbreak, awful players, and general glum of the team and their history was molded into something ironically beautiful. Both have their place in the sun, and both represent the two different types of sports fans out there. One is Homer; The one that cries out when someone makes a mistake; The one who acts as the gm in armchair only, the one who ties himself to the team. I'll fully admit, I'm one myself. It's hard not to go off on a rant when a goalie makes a bad play or when a fielder messes up a play - Years of being an O's and Caps fans generally leads to that after all. Yet, Bois video represents the Flanders in all of us. The one that, despite all the hardships our favorite team has, we still watch because we love the game. Or I looked too deeply into videos about a man who yelled about bad teams and made dick punching jokes, and the one who found interest in Blurbing
idk if they still have it, but I remember they used to have an app accessible on the DS and later 3DS that was only accessible at, you guessed it, Sa- oh wait, T-Mobile Park
I've been a Mariner fan since they started. This summary was so painful to watch, yet I couldn't help but laugh through my tears at the commentary. Job well done...
Legacy of failure and haters guides should be all that the NBA gets because lol cows definitely won’t work. As of right now, if you aren’t the Warriors, then you are a lol cow.
it's been 20 years they're tied with the Boston Red Sox with three games to go against the underachieving Angels lets see if the narrative is either broken or reinforced
Im an indians fan, and i agree a leagcy of failure vid would be perfect. The oakland a's could be a good fit too (starting around the moneyball era. 9 straight losses in winner take all games)
@Harry Engel The Toronto Maple Leafs recently got a Half-Century of Failure video. Since Cleveland's title drought has gone on even longer than them, they deserve a video as well.
I won’t lie, these tree baseball videos have really helped me get back into the sport. And it’s helped me learn more about each sport like details and stat wise. So not only do you give me funny as videos but they’re informative as hell. Keep up the good work tree
The problem with your comment....and it's a fair enough comment, actually....is that the Mariners are brilliant at stringing the fans along with "juuuuust good enough" baseball to keep us interested. Then the dick punch comes in late August or soon after (even worse, really) in September.
Forgot to bring up the dick-punch that cost the Mariners a shot at 117 wins, which would have set the record. The Mariners that season became the 1st team since 1925 (and 3rd overall) to blow a 12-run lead. They led the Indians 14-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning before the Indians scored 3, 4, and 5 runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th respectively and won it in the 11th inning. That said, the Mariners got the last laugh over the Indians that season in the ALDS (barely). And then they got dick-punched by the Yankees in the ALCS
@Harry Engel I'm a Red Sox fan and I'd gladly give up 2004 if it meant Grady Gump doesn't choke and leave Pedro Martinez in to rot in Game 7 the year before. That 2003 season was far more magical than 2004
that was my 18th birthday. I went downstairs to get cake in the 6th, and came back up to extra innings. "Congratulations on becoming an adult. Have some disappointment."
So they had A-Rod, Papi, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, Vizquel and Ichiro in their organization at different periods from the mid 90's to early 2000's and still didn't get one ring? Oh my God...
Not only that they were about to bring Omar back in 2004 but the idiot medical staff flunked his physical so they signed Rich Aurilia instead. Meantime Omar had a few more solid years while the M's were bumbling through dolts like Yuniesky Betancourt, great moves among many............
Though keep in mind, Ortiz didn't reach his true potential until getting to Boston. If he was stuck on the Mariners, I doubt he would become what he is today.
As a lifelong Mariners fan boy does it suck. They finally blew it up, giving the fans no hope this season... Yep they begin the season 8-2 giving everyone hope, including myself. They've sucked us all in for the 100000th time
Good news: the Mariners have FINALLY broken the drought AND won a playoff series against the Blue Jays. Bad news: Agony, thy name is Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Peña. Even after their best season in 20+ years, Seattle still finds a way to punch their fans in the dick.
Yeah but that way you could say Ichiro and Griffey played together, even if it was a pale attempt at recreating what could have been when they were in ST together in 1999
Besides, I give the 2009 M's a pass: that team was legitimately fun (Death to Flying Things, Griffey homer to beat D-Backs, Ichiro 2-run shot off of Rivera, Blowers called shot of Matt Tuiasosopo), and it was the last time (hell maybe the only) that they were while the Hawks were a shitshow--which means that every ten-year old was barely alive when that happened.
2021: Where the hell did this late season surge come from? Know what, doesn't matter. There's a possible 6-way tie for the AL wild card with less than a week to go in the season. Sweep the leg. Sept. 26th 2021: The Red Sox refuse to allow chaos to reign and knock you out of playoff contention.
Well you have to remember that everytime they got close the Yankees were there to end the season for them. They should have been able to beat them, but they are a good team and the M's will make it this year (hopefully)
They also had the worst bullpens of all time in the 90s. Even if they drafted talented relief pitching, they would immediately trade it away. They would trade stars or serviceable players for absolute trash relievers. I remember they didn't have a decent relief pitcher until they imported one from Japan in 2000 in Sasaki.
Well then I guess you’ll never have to shave again, because the mariners aren’t winning the World Series anytime soon. This is basically their “rebuilding year”
Conglaturations. Remember when your fan base talked all that shit when your most hated rival started at 9 games and you pulled away? A ten game lead over a team missing over 90% of their starting pitching and you choked it away and missed the playoffs. Big ouch.
As a kid growing up on the east coast, I used to stay up late to watch mariners games in the 90's... mostly for Griffey, its crazy really, Martinez, Griffey, Johnson, Rodriguez... but most of their pitching was awful. The team has produced super stars, but ye, they never seal the deal.
Yeesh...even as a sorry Mets fan who saw his OWN 2023 horror story, I've gotta say, Mariners fans... Eliminated in the second to last game of the season. Not one but TWO Texas teams sink the M's ship. *Now THAT was a cup-buster of a baseball dick punch.*
I mean, 1/3 of the league makes the playoffs, and only 8 of those teams actually play a series. Compared to the 50% of the NBA/NHL, and that rebuilding in the NFL isn't lengthy (12/32 make the playoffs btw), MLB is the toughest league to win a championship. Don't forget, HOFer Ernie Banks never went to the playoffs during his 18 year career.
The Detroit Lions can't have a legacy of failure because they have won championships in the past (1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957). I know they haven't won a Super Bowl, heck they haven't made it to one
And the Mariners did the most Mariner thing vs the Angels the last series of this season to add yet another depressing chapter to this story. The Angels did the most Angel thing by winning when it didn’t matter. Gotta love baseball!
@Fries And they only needed MLB to add ANOTHER playoff spot to get there! LOL...good luck, but they'll probably be Division Round fodder, if they even make it there.
@Fries I'm a Giants fan, but I'd love to see a deep run by Seattle this playoffs. Heck, I' like to see the Mariners win it all! You're right, they're in the 5 spot right now, a half game ahead of Tampa. Good luck in the playoffs to the M's!
@Fries Last year, most Giants players played to the top of their potential. Belt and Crawford had career-years. Posey was producing a lot. The starting pitching was fantastic, and they won most of their one-run games. Posey retired at the end of last season, which was a huge loss. His value at the catcher position was basically irreplaceable, and his bat has always been super solid. Belt and Crawford haven't had anywhere near the same production this season, and the team found ways to lose close games instead of win them this year. They aren't a bad team, just nothing special. They did just win 9 of 10, but too little, too late.
2019: The Mariners get off to a great start, and then proceed to crash and burn, leaving them in the cellar of the AL West. At least they have some fun veterans like Edwin Encarnacion and young talents like Mitch Haniger and Justus Sheffield to provide them entertainment and maybe just a little bit of hope for the future? Oh, Sheffield's in Triple A? Oh, Edwin's a Yankee? Oh, Haniger LITERALLY busted a nut? NOW they're the TRUE Mariners.
Story time: my dad and I road-tripped to Seattle in summer 2010 after I graduated high school and went to a couple of games at Safeco. I remember two things: 1) In the first game a fan reached over the short wall on the right-field line and grabbed a fair ball. The runner on first, then the go-ahead run, was called back to third on the ground-rule double. The M’s failed to score; the Royals took the lead for good the next inning. 2) In the second game, the loudest applause in a mostly-empty ballpark is reserved for EX-MARINER UTILITYMAN Willie Bloomquist. I haven’t been back since. Here’s to Logan Gilbert winning the Cy Young with an 11-12 record, 275 strikeouts, and a 1.75 ERA 🤦♂ 2-1 losses on the house!
2020: Despite a 27-33 shortened season you nearly make the playoffs yet again. You finish five games out of the second wild card spot and two games from the second place berth, which you basically handed to the 29-31 Houston Astros by losing seven of ten against them. 2021: This is their year. They may be 3 and a half games out at the start of September but the Mariners are hot. The thing is you have four other teams to deal with. September 12, 2021: The Blue Jays have won 11 of 12, the Yankees and Red Sox are still playing extremely well and you're struggling to take off. At least Oakland's collapsing. That's one less team to deal with. September 29, 2021: This is it. The Mariners have won 10 of their last 11 and are only half a game out. You're going to make it. I don't believe it! October 3, 2021: And you lose two of three to the Angels and finish two games out. At least Toronto tried to make the final push. 2022: You start slow but suddenly begin a 14-game win streak to return to contention. You're in the second wild card spot with a 1.5 game cushion. It's time to make some noise. 2022 Wild Card series: They've done it. They've ended the drought. They shut out the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the Wild Card series, but they're down 8-1 in the second game. What's this? You scored four runs in the sixth inning? However, it's still a four-run game as Toronto tacks on another run in the seventh. But it turns out the Blue Jays have a terrible bullpen so you score four more in the eighth to tie it, and one more in the ninth to win it. 2022 ALDS: It doesn't matter! The Mariners blow a lead of their own in both Game 1 and 2, and then proceed to torture their fans for eighteen innings before giving up a solo home run to Jeremy Peña. The dick punch has returned once again.
Start of September: You begin the month with a shutout of the Tigers and a series win over the former Indians. You currently have a 2 game advantage over the Blue Jays and a 3.5 game lead over the Orioles in the Wild Card race. Can this be the year the Mariners finally break through?
That was some of your best stuff. Do one on Atlanta Sports. The Braves, Falcons, Hawks and whatever the hell happened with the Thrashers. Being a Braves fan I have seen a looooot of team collapses but then it kind of seems like an Atlanta Sports thing and not just the Braves.
@@katherineberger6329 Because the American League was on fire in the '90s. First the Twins' thrilling victory, then the glorious back-to-back titles by the Blue Jays, and then the rise of the greatest Yankees teams since the days of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The Braves were the model of consistency, but they were always one-upped by a team, or even a dynasty, from the Junior Circuit.
As a Mariners fan, I understand what Cleveland Browns fans must feel like. Oh, and there'll be a Super Bowl at Wembley Stadium before the Mariners return to the postseason.
I came back to watch this after I finished Jon Bois' master thesis, I compared this as UTree's loud and impossible to drive safely muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s to Jon Bois' modern luxury sports car that handles the road and drives faster with better gas mileage. Both are entertaining and fun but for completely different reasons.
FUN FACT: The reason why Bud Selig bought the Pilots and moved them to Milwaukee to become the Brewers was because he wanted to have baseball come back to Milwaukee after the Braves left the city for Atlanta. He originally purchased the White Sox in 1969 to move them to Milwaukee after they hosted some regular season games in the city which brought in about 1/3 of total fan attendance for the season. However, the American League vetoed the sale because they wanted to keep the team in Chicago since it was the second most-populated city at the time. So, he looked for another team to purchase and bring to Milwaukee and that choice was the Seattle Pilots which somehow became bankrupt after their only season in Seattle which made it an easy purchase and move for Selig though not without controversy as a lawsuit was filed in response to the move. It's almost like Bob Irsay's move to relocate the Colts to Indianapolis from Baltimore since it was so last-minute.

I want to say thank you.
@Fries Amen
This is even funnier now that I've watched the SB Nation Mariners series (well, the first 4 parts anyway) and I get more of it lol
Having lived in WA from 2003-2014 it was agonizing watching them, but it was amazing watching Ichiro. Also Felix's perfect game was a highlight. Also the stadium is fantastic.
That stadium is one of the best in the majors

Mama Mia! What a collapse!

10:33 “Hey look everyone! Ken Griffey! He’s a fossil, but NOSTALGIA!” 😂

For what? For being reminded of how many dick punches this team has given to his fanbase?
damn, the amount of talent that the mariners had at one point in the late 90's is staggering. shameful that they could never make it past the ALCS
I'm still surprised that there is no 30 for 30 special on this team because of the talent they had.
Well you have to remember that everytime they got close the Yankees were there to end the season for them. They should have been able to beat them, but they are a good team and the M's will make it this year (hopefully)
Yeah about that...

The Detroit Lions can't have a legacy of failure because they have won championships in the past (1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957). I know they haven't won a Super Bowl, heck they haven't made it to one
The Lions had past championship success, hard to believe I know but NFL have been around before SB you know.
Legacy of Failure(In The Modern Era)
This works.
@Harry Engel Same for the Jets, one fluke year kept them from qualifying from this. Not to mention they pretty much coasted on that as well.
Absolutely love the hilarious dialogue combined with your sarcastic tone. This gave me a good laugh.
I hope the Mariners can win a WS someday.
Maybe in 2023 since they're hosting the all star game in 2023 lmao
2019: The Mariners get off to a great start, and then proceed to crash and burn, leaving them in the cellar of the AL West.
I remember two things:
1) In the first game a fan reached over the short wall on the right-field line and grabbed a fair ball.
Here’s to Logan Gilbert winning the Cy Young with an 11-12 record, 275 strikeouts, and a 1.75 ERA 🤦♂

Will they punch their fans in the dick again?
Start of September: You begin the month with a shutout of the Tigers and a series win over the former Indians. You currently have a 2 game advantage over the Blue Jays and a 3.5 game lead over the Orioles in the Wild Card race. Can this be the year the Mariners finally break through?
