It’s also worth noting that Hiroshi Yamauchi, who owned Mariners, never went to a single Mariners game while alive even when Mariners played few games in Japan.
MLB commissioner Fay Vincent and ownership committee were strongly opposed to the idea of a non-North American owner and did not approve the deal. However, following the strong support and sentiments of the people of Seattle and press, the commissioner formally approved the deal, under the condition that Yamauchi had less than 50% of the vote. This was a major development in American baseball, because this opened the gates for Japanese baseball players to American league teams, which had been previously denied. In 2000, the club made its first profit of $2.6 million since its acquisition by Yamauchi. And as you mentioned, Yamauchi never attended a Mariners game.
Ive always wondered other than money, why have a post season ? I always think the team that is the best over a season should simply be the best team. You can win all 150 games in a season and then lose in the first round in the playoffs and it's all over coz one team went on a run at the end of the year. Does that really make them the best team ? When the Patriots lost the SB after winning every game, were they all of a sudden not the best team that year ? I'll never understand it
@@scottallan7931 Because TV. Soccer has both. The regular season might be interesting, but the real TV draw is the elimination cups. Elimination cups have the do or die excitement at the last matches, the regular season might not have a deciding match, especially if one team is dominant. If the NFL, as per your example, didn't have the quite random crapshoot they call a Superbowl run, the 2007 season would have been over after 13 games, with 3 more or less meaningless games remaining. This means that the big crowd pullers for TV, the big money makers, is impossible to get some seasons. Do or die games simply makes for better TV, and with a elimination structure, you can ensure they happen. That they are random crapshoots, with outcomes that have only a little to do with deciding the better team, matters little there.
@@Andvare you make good points, of course playoffs and cups have the excitement of do or die and a winner but I have seen a number of times across different sports a team finish as low as eighth with a 45 percent winning rate after the regular season, make the playoffs then win 3 games in a row and be called champions which should be for the best (most consistent) team of the year overall

Listening to all the names that came and went through Seattle in the early 2000s made me realize that the Mariners are basically just a AAA team for the Yankees...
Notable players traded out of the Mariners organization are Adam Jones, Jason Varitek, David Ortiz, Mike Montgomery (the guy who got the final out of the Cubs 2016 World Series win), and Mark Trumbo prior to his fantastic 2016 season (only one really worth anything for him). No, they're not a farm team for NYY. They make some good trades, and a lot of bad ones across Major League Baseball as a whole.
The last guy to go to the Yankees from Seattle was Mike Ford (who's now back. ) But yeah, there's a number of guys who went over to New York and got that team far into the playoffs like Olerud and Raul Ibanez.
Ikr. That comment wouldn't fly in a place like Boston or New York. Lincoln would've been ripped to shreds by the fans, the writers, and the local radio shock jocks.
CGagnon5 "Everyone thought Josh McDaniels would be the perfect replacement for Bill Belichek, instead his personal ego proved too large. Desperate to establish his own legacy, he jettisoned all of Belichek's players beginning with Tom Brady...... Brady would go on to play 5 more seasons and win 2 more Super Bowls with the Cincinnati Bengals. Pats' fans realized what Broncos' fans already knew --- Josh McDaniels would forever be remembered as the biggest egotistical idiot the NFL had ever seen." This really isn't too difficult to imagine
As of this very moment, they are undefeated 3-0 in the current 2019 season. However, I expect that mini-streak of wins to end against Brady's Patriots within the next 24 hours.
Watching this video made me realize they wouldn’t have been as good in 2001 if not for trading Big Unit for Garcia, Guillen and Halama also as much as it sucks to see my all-time favorite player never make a WS trading him for Cameron proved to be the right move given Griffey’s injuries as a Red. Maybe they get past the Yanks if they keep A-Rod, but at that time Texas shocked the world by giving a contract that only the Yankees would’ve offered, long before the Red Sox and Dodgers joined them as biggest spenders. The biggest kick in the nuts though was seeing the long suffering Angels pass them in ‘02 for the WC after they blew the division to the A’s to win their 1st and only WS. 21yrs later they remain the only team in MLB w/o a WS appearance thanks to the Nationals(fka Expos) winning it all in ‘19.
The 2000's was horrible for Seattle. The Mariners teased and choked, the Sonics left for Oklahoma City and became the Thunder and Frasier came to an end. The Seahawks also got screwed out of Super Bowl 40 to the Steelers.

I think it was mainly due to people focusing on the yankees-redsox rivalry. They wanted a 3rd ALCS with those 2 teams so badly that the white Sox magical season went under the radar. Even to this day many don't talk about it much. They were hooked on the 03/04 yankees-redsox postseason battles that they did not keep up with the solid team Chicago had that year...
How about a collapse on the Los Angeles Kings? They went from two AMAZING Stanley Cup runs in three years to being one of the worst teams in the NHL, and that would make it so we've seen at least one from all four sports.

Originally, I am from Seattle. I go to college in Illinois with several Chicago kids, mostly all Cubs fans. When they won in 2016, the first thing I asked each and every one of them was "are you finally willing to concede the Mariners are the most cursed team in baseball?" This is a team that last made the playoffs when I was 4 years old and in preschool, and right now I'm a 5th year student in college. A baby born on the day of the last Mariners playoff game would be month and a half way from being legally able to vote in the US (and they're definitely not making it this year). To be honest, it's one thing if the team was a regular season juggernaut but couldn't win in the playoffs. But since that 03 season, the Mariners have had 5 winning seasons (07, 09, 14, 16, and 18), and 4 of them they had genuine chances to be a playoff team (all but 09). What happened? The A's either got hot and stole the Wild Card spot, or they played spoiler against Seattle. To be honest, I hate the A's more than any other team, including the Yankees and Angels, even though I respect the hell out of their general management (ownership not so much). The 07 team blew a Wild Card lead in August, the 14 team was eliminated on the last day of the season because they had a great rotation but one good hitter (Robinson Cano), the 16 team started well, tumbled horribly in June, and went on a hot streak only to be eliminated on the second to last day of the year, and the 18 team blew an 8.5 game lead in the Wild Card standings, falling from 24 games over .500 at the time in July to 16 over at the end. This is the first time they've tried to attempt a legitimate rebuild where they tear everything down in a while, though, so I have some level of hope. Not much, though.
Lou Pinella was a great manager, but he had a flaw; he coached using his gut, not analytically. I’ll give a couple of examples how this doomed them in the postseason that year. First of all, he started Jay Buhner who spent almost all season on DL. A move done out of loyalty. Secondly, I remember a game against the Yankees where he had Edgar Martinez try to steal a base. Edgar is my all time favorite Mariner, a hall of fame DH, but probably the slowest man on the planet. Out at second, rally killer. Went on to lose that game. Man, it’s amazing that I remember all that nearly 20 years later.
Analytics are to be thrown out of the window during the post season. Just look at how many World Series wins the Athletics, the Rays, and the Pirates have despite those organizations employing "Moneyball." They don't feel like spending extra money to complete their pitching staff and fielders. There are tangible numbers to use from playoff games, but often times you just see players defy expectations from the numbers guys and lead their teams to victory.
Jamie Moyer pitched in the mid 80's, 90's, 2000's and the 2010's He was a 16 game winner at age 45 for Philly's world series winning ball club in 2008. He had a remarkable and unique career.

This is the biggest OOF that I've ever received while watching an SB Nation video. I remember this season and the hope that it brought to my city for a championship. The heartbreak was so real.
Mariners were down 2-1 on the road against Clev in the 2001 division series, so they almost lost that one as well. I still feel like the 2000 Mariners with 90 wins were a more dangerous team than the 116 wins 2001 Mariners
@@davidalhadeff8238 and yet...they weren't as good as the Yankees they lost to lol. 2000 was better, when they had A-Rod. They severely outperformed their talent level in 2001, and in the playoffs it came back to haunt them. Top to bottom, the Yankees were just better that year. You could even start with the starting pitching.
To Mike... I think you've done a really good job here. Especially, from 4 minutes on. I look at the Mariners now and basically the same ownership is there running the team as a Consortium. I've been a season-ticket holder since 1996 and gave them up this year because I'm just tired of the product that ownership runs out onto the field. With this team it's never been the GM's fault or the coaches fault. Now, what you didn't cover was the nagging injuries to both Edgar and Bret Boone towards the tail end of of the season in September. This was the heart of their order. And if my memory serves me correctly, Edgar had a nagging groin injury and Boone had issues with a severely bruised heel that would that would not cure itself. And this showed up in their postseason performance. As good as Aaron Sele was during the 2001 season he was not a big game picture. He did not bring his best game to those playoffs. Pitching is everything in the postseason. So to sum up the first part, if we had a healthy Edgar and Brett it may have been different. They didn't rake in September like they did most of the Season. However what you did nail is the ownership and how they have continued to mismanage the franchise for over a decade and I finally gave up this year.
As a Pittsburgh fan, I've had my fair share of losing and then some. But even the trauma of countless games with scores like 20-0 (against Milwaukee), 17-2 (against Chicago) and 15-1 (against St. Louis) can't compare to the utter heartbreak I felt when we were eliminated from the postseason. I had never known what winning felt like, and then that feeling was suddenly destroyed. On the bright side, my favourite ever line from a newspaper article only existed because of a horrific offensive showing one night, where (I'm paraquoting here) "Better contact was made by Jalapeño Hannah [one of the Pierogi Racers] than any of the batters, when she whacked another Pierogi over the head with her purse." I wish I had cut this out and framed it, as I can't seem to find it anywhere online (so I can check the real wording), but I will forever cherish it as only a die-hard fan could.
Idea for a collapse video: The Texas Rangers from 2010-now. From being so close to a World Series ring in 2011 to 2014 making last place and 2017-18 making last place.
The 2001 Mariners were the pinnacle of successful failures until the 07 Patriots and the 16 Warriors showed us that its far more brutal to make it almost to the finishline and then crash in spectacular fashion.
I've see a lot of comparisons of this year's Tampa Bay Lightning to the 01 Mariners but as an M's fan, even I feel bad for Lightning fans. We at least made it to the LCS. Their bus came to a screeching halt the second the regular season ended. At least they have a league title to look back on.

The Patriots had a perfect season, easily won 2 playoff games, but then they choked in the Super Bowl.
Although, I don't think Belichick and Brady mind that collapse too much considering how many championships they have won.
The way you guys breakdown the history of teams so effectively has me absolutely pining for a build up style video to the Red Sox' first WS title in 04. The dynamic of the league was so fascinating at that time. Lots of underdog stories.

I remember that game vividly. I was on vacation and listening to it on the radio and they were up by like 11. Finished dinner and they were up by 8. Got back to the hotel and they were up by 5 and then the Indians just kept chipping away.

Do one on how the expos had the best team in baseball in 1994 until the lockout, and than traded all their players and the team eventually moved.
Mariners were playing awesome in 94 as well.
@Harry Engel i think everything you said was spot on! well said man. gosh i remember the mariners were FINALLY playing good ball. i really think they would have taken the division. but prob an expos and yankees series that year.
@Harry Engel It's also possible the White Sox make the World Series since in my opinion, they were a better overall team then New York, especially in terms of pitching depth.
Expos were never gonna succeed with the piss poor management they had.
Hence why they only made the playoffs once (1981) in their 35 year history

Listening to all the names that came and went through Seattle in the early 2000s made me realize that the Mariners are basically just a AAA team for the Yankees...
4077Disc only a few of those gus ended up in pinstripes.
@@ypro3102 The Yankees also signed Tino Martinez away from the Mariners in the 90s
Joshua Smith they traded for him actually
The last guy to go to the Yankees from Seattle was Mike Ford (who's now back. ) But yeah, there's a number of guys who went over to New York and got that team far into the playoffs like Olerud and Raul Ibanez.
The goal is not to win now. The goal now is to fight for a chance to win. WHAT?!
Believe me, the rest of us in Seattle were just as pissed. Lou Pinella wanted the talent but management kept saying no

As of this very moment, they are undefeated 3-0 in the current 2019 season. However, I expect that mini-streak of wins to end against Brady's Patriots within the next 24 hours.
Just imagine if they had Johnson, A-Rod, Griffey, and Ichiro all on the same team
AmericanNohbuddy ™ ARod would've gotten jealous
Noh Buddy don’t forget the mariners had David Ortiz in their farm system at one point. 😂
Thanks!
The 2000's was horrible for Seattle. The Mariners teased and choked, the Sonics left for Oklahoma City and became the Thunder and Frasier came to an end. The Seahawks also got screwed out of Super Bowl 40 to the Steelers.
At least they have a hockey market now that should be absolutely HUGE for them Seattle fans are rabid and very very loyal
Every single time, you get me by the end of the video. Something about the heartfelt music coming to a close and that final sentence being thoughtful and contemplative. The one you did for the NY Giants collapse resonated hard, and I still go back to watch its final 3-4 minutes.
You should do a video on the “forgotten” 2005 post season. One of the most dominant playoff runs ever and no one even remembers it.
@Harry Engel well that world series wasn't really that great
I think it was mainly due to people focusing on the yankees-redsox rivalry. They wanted a 3rd ALCS with those 2 teams so badly that the white Sox magical season went under the radar. Even to this day many don't talk about it much. They were hooked on the 03/04 yankees-redsox postseason battles that they did not keep up with the solid team Chicago had that year...
Yeah, I remember that 2005 postseason. What a run for the Orioles and Giants. A playoff to be remembered.
My family had season tickets in 2001 when I was just a kid. This brought back so many memories. Great video as always

i mean they beat themselves they could have beat the skanks
I was 17 at the time, and recalled to be listening on radio the ALCS series against the Yanks, just to end disappointed at the Mariners' elimination after that great regular season
It finally happened. The drought is over.
As an Angels fan (2002 Champs), this is quite possibly the BEST SB Nation video I've ever seen!
The Mariners have broke their 21 year postseason drought and they are heading to the 2022 MLB Postseason for the first time since 01
Lou Pinella was a great manager, but he had a flaw; he coached using his gut, not analytically.
He also had a penchant for relying on veterans over young players.
THE DROUGHT IS OVER AND THIS VIDEO JUST AGED VERY WELL.
Jamie Moyer pitched in the mid 80's, 90's, 2000's and the 2010's

I am more curious about the phenomena of Cowboys fans acting like it is still 1996...
2001 was the same year the Mariners blew a 12 run lead to Cleveland. That should have been a sign that the Mariners that year weren't invincible.
Nathaniel Levesque that would've been win no. 117. Truly a bizarre moment in an otherwise incredible season.
the only reason they won that game was because Cleveland committed suicide by pitching Chuck Finley in game 5. I have no idea why.
2001 Mariners were possibly the biggest team in history
That big valley at the end of the graph continued to flatline until... uh... ((looks at watch))... yup, still going.
Well it took 21 years, but the historic drought has FINALLY ended. The Mariners are going to the 2022 Postseason!
1986 New York Mets would make a great episode. The dynasty that never was, spiraling into 1992, aka The Worst Team Money Could Buy.
Every time I think you guys are done, you keep pulling me back in
As a Pittsburgh fan, I've had my fair share of losing and then some.
Keep up the good work SB Nation. Love this stories
