    Iowa fan, I had a front row seat to a lot of ISU’s 1982-99 misery. Without a trace of hyperbole, they were easily in the running for worst major conference program of all time. To see what they’ve done under Campbell is truly remarkable, I don’t know if the general college fan has any idea or appreciation for it. Hell, sometimes I wonder if ISU fans themselves appreciate it! State of Iowa has extremely challenging demographics as far as building a winning FBS program. State population has essentially flatlined for something like 70 years with TWO FBS programs to support (one of the two, Iowa, definitely hogging most of the glory, historically). Yet, there they are, playing for the Big XII title, damn near a playoff team. Incredibly impressive.

    • @madbrowniac7871
      @madbrowniac7871 Месяц назад +2

      @nickhill934: ISU needs to hang on to Matt Campbell as dearly as it can! Two other guys with The Cyclone Program did very well later on. Johnny Majors won The 1976 Natty at Pitt with Heisman Trophy Winner Tony Dorsett at RB. And speaking of Dallas Cowboys, a former Assistant in Ames eventually became the first Head Coach to win both a National Championship and a Super Bowl. His name of course is Jimmy Johnson. Then there's Matt Campbell himself who nabbed a couple of Rings while helping guide D3 Superpower Mount Union to two of their overall TWELVE Natties in just over three Decades!😂🤷‍♂️🏈B.W.

When Arkansas State was part of what was then known as D1AA he guided them to The 1984 National Championship. Eventually Coaches Lacewell and Johnson reunited on The Dallas Cowboys Staff. Their journey together started in Ames.🤔🏈B.W.

    Fun Iowa State fact: Iowa State is the reason a safety gives the ball back to the scoring team. In 1925, while winning 7-0 Iowa State's QB took the snap and ran backwards into the endzone before kneeling and giving up a safety. At the time scoring a safety gave the ball back to the team who had the ball previously, so with a score of 7-2 Iowa State took the ball back, and proceeded to use this strategy to burn off time and run the clock down before eventually winning 7-6. The rule was changed the following season

    2:18 I know what that feels like. My alma mater, Augustana in Sioux Falls, SD, was BY FAR the smallest school in the Division II North Central Conference, after Morningside dropped down to NAIA; in the early 2000s, Augie was 1700 students, while the next-smallest, University of South Dakota, was around 7000 & SDSU (yes, the same SDSU which is the 2-time FCS Champion) was around 8000; the largest school in the conference was St. Cloud State with 15,000. Augie just wasn't big enough to consistently compete with the larger schools in our conference in football & men’s basketball. My freshman year, 1997, Augie actually BEAT SDSU in football, & my senior year (2000-01), Augie won BOTH men’s basketball games against SDSU, in Sioux Falls & in Brookings!

I'm not a fan of blowout games, but just liked the opportunity to watch GOOD teams in person. While there, I married a lady who is a K State alumnus. We moved away, then came back in 1987 or 88 to visit friends. It was early in the season when everybody hosted teams that they should beat. So K State was scheduled to play Austin Peay. We didn't go to the game, but listened on the radio. The Mildkittens even lost to THEM!!!

Lot of folks cut Jim slack because he is a nice guy, but I think he should have been fired sooner, as he ran the same play every offensive down. But maybe that’s part of the nature of the option.

      It wasn't his fault the academic admins running the school at the time intentionally sabotaged the program in hopes the school would drop FB then eventually all other sports. They wanted to create a major university that was a well recognized institution.
      Steve Lester a 1st team all Big 8 WR in 1989 had a GPA just barely good enough to be eligible 2.0 was the min his was 2.17. However this was not good enough for the professors and were afraid if the team got good enough people would pay more attention to the FB program rather than academic success. They forced him to enroll in a CC to bring his grades up. He brought it up by nearly a whole GPA point. However the pro academic admins were so determined to have their way they refused to allow him back in and he never played another down of football. They literally sabotaged his FB career to satisfy their self centered egos. After that, Walden give up on trying to get high talented recruits (there were all star athletes ISU did this to at the time) and changed the offense back to the triple option. People cut Walden a lot of slack because we know he had no chance.

    Iowa State made some great strides in the early '90s. Primarily in developing a fan base committed to making football games fun without requiring "winning" to be a factor in the fun. Some of their program's most loyal fans came from that crucible when we refused to act like a bottom feeder's fans. The Cyclones notched epic wins against Oklahoma and Nebraska in the midst of those bad seasons, and the fans viewed them as sign of things to come. That enthusiasm fueled the rise under Coach McCarney. That core fan base has become a huge part of the current Cyclone nation.

    Great video as always but i feel like this year is an anomaly personally for the smaller schools. My reasoning being I'm an Arkansas fan for now at least they try my patience thats for sure but unfortunately with this new era of NIL it's making schools like ours become feeder teams for the bigger schools in our conference. Essentially Arkansas Kentucky and Vanderbilt may do well one year and seem to be building momentum but with players being able to transfer every year it makes the best players from those teams seek better deals with Alabama Georgia Lsu Ole miss etc. Ultimately leaving us high and dry and having to rebuild year after year. Arkansas alone has seen close to 30 trasfers and while some may say its a culture issue and that may be true. We're not the only ones experiencing that I believe teams like Kentucky are as well. So it seems to just be the influence of NIL and the transfer portal in my opinion at least. Don't wanna make this seem like I'm hating on your opinion I think you make the best college football content personally.

      Not close. You guys are better than Oregon and Oregon State with occasional pops of good stuff ( Rypien, Garcia, Bledsoe, the trip to San Diego where they gave a Jim McMahon led Byu squad trouble )

    I’m so confused why 1980’s Iowa state is wearing red and yellow helmets AT THE SAME TIME

    • @Chevy265V8
      @Chevy265V8 7 дней назад

      The red helmets were worn by players who won the teams player of the week the game before. Sometimes it was just one player but often multiple players wore that helmet color the same game. Problem was other teams knew that and would zero in on the guy in the red helmet knowing they were one of the better players. The did that from 83-86.

    Pop Warner coaching at ISU was a twist 🤯
    Also, I had no idea that ISU is considered the worst team the original seven Big XII schools! I mean, even better than Kansas??

      Kansas State was far worse than Iowa State up until the 90's KSU was the worst FB program in the Big 6, 7, and 8. The only difference is Bill Snyder brought them out of the ashes while Iowa State went from bad to worse in the 90's. It took ISU nearly 30 years to find their Coach Snyder but they still aren't as successful as Kstate was in the late 90's and early 00's.

      With that being said, if you find yourself looking for an underdog in a world of big money & major brands, pick the cyclones! A passionate fanbase that loves the team and fans. Stop by and tailgate, tell the people you meet your visiting and I’ll bet ya you never drink your own beer.

    I hate to break it to folks, the best 10 programs will still be there in this “new era”. If anything, the dogshit format of the 12 team playoff is only allowing for the 3-4th best teams in the Big10 or SEC to get a 2nd or 3rd chance at making it in - a team that would end Cinderella runs quickly.
