Yeah, they've got a club foot, and they weren't very good at anything, but we loved them, dammit. When they brought the program back, the whole state came together to love this team, and players from the four corners of the Earth who had left the state to play football transferred back home. It was a beautiful year.

Thank you for posting this. Graduated from UAB in 2011, worked as an Equipment Manager during Callaway’s second year. Was employed there when the shutdown happened. One thing that wasn’t covered here: Bear Bryant and the BOT had long been against UAB Athletics even existing, saying “they have a team in Tuscaloosa, what do they need their own for” There was also a stadium proposal agreed upon in principle in 2010/11. It was blocked in an overnight, closed door session with no reason as to why. The city of Bham & private donors were going to front most costs and it was rumored that we were required to finish Callaway’s contract in order for it to be considered. It was after this incident that our AD at the time learned to just leak information. When McGee was hired, the hire was leaked to ESPN so it would be announced and the BOT couldn’t back out without looking bad
Also, it came out that the firm paid to do the initial study was essentially paid to produce those results. Andy Schwarz, who learned of our situation volunteered to do his own review and found the money was more than available, the BOT just didn’t want to spend it
Wasn't the proposed site of that stadium where regions field stands now? Just imagine if UAB actually had a approximate on campus stadium, instead of proping up the BJCC.
