The Washington Nationals: A Legacy of Failure (1969-2019)

- TRIGGER WARNING: The following video contains scenes that may cause horrible pain for Nationals/Expos fans and/or vicarious joy for division rivals.
This is one I've had in my sights since last year. I was just waiting for certain events to transpire before I began work on it (i.e. See how they fared in Bryce Harper's final contract year). Now things have come to pass and it's finally time to take this video out of the oven. It's showtime.
The Washington Nationals (previously the Montreal Expos) are the epitome of failure in many ways. Some of these failures are due to elements out of their control, but many of them are the fault of their own doing. Be it due to owners running the team on a shoestring budget to underachieving to colossal failures in the postseason, this organization has it all. This video is a long one, but due to all the juicy material, there wasn't much I could cut out.
Sit back and enjoy the horrifying pain.
And now its dead. A new record shattered at eleven months after release.
Be real, nobody saw this coming back in the summer. Don't lie.
don't ya hate it when your videos get ruined by teams winning
Now watch the Wizards win the NBA Finals by 2021.
Loads of your legacy of failure vids keep getting outdated. So maybe make some more. Rockies? Padres?
When they were 19-31, I didn’t expect the team to turn it around.
From an ERA over 7 to being World Champs? That’s Impressive.
January 28 2017 LOF Capitals comes out.
June 7 2018 Caps win the cup
June 18 2017 LOF Blues comes out.
June 12 2019 Blues win the cup.
November 11 2018 LOF Nationals win the cup.
October 30 2019 Nationals win World Series.
Which Tree LOF video will become irrelevant next. For me I’m betting on Andy Reid.
Who’s here after the Nationals win the World Series? 😁🥳
*THE LEGACY OF FAILURE IS BROKEN!!!!!*
UrinatingTree has reverse jinxed another franchise.
Eagerly awaiting my "Congrats, Cardinals!" video to go along with the Dodgers one. Whether this video aged poorly TBD.
John Evans every UrinatingTree video ages poorly except for Pittsburgh videos. His Steelers and pirates videos are so accurate
Meeeeee HAHA
Congratulations Washington Nationals I hope they win
And I'll be back after we win!
This video didn’t even age a year the Nationals won the 2019 World Series
Yeah it really did'nt.
It's been the same with the caps and blues
Seems to be a reoccurring theme. He trashes certain teams, then they win in relatively short order.
now it's the chiefs' turn.
Against a CHEATING team. Doesn't get better than that.
You forgot to mention how in 1995 the Expos drafted a young and talented catcher straight out of high school. However said catcher turn them down so he could play college football. His name was Tom Brady
WHAT?!
It was in the 18th round though, it's not like he was expected to sign with them. That is merely a fun factiot.
@@esodevulpes6435 The Expos offered Brady more money than a normal 18th round pick, they offered him late 2nd round to early 3rd round money. That shows how bad Montreal wanted him
NO WAY
So what?!? He's a famous qb not a famous catcher. He obviously chose the right sport.
That's like saying your baseball team could have drafted Michael Jordan lol
2019: You lose Bryce Harper, but you sign Patrick Corbin. Hopefully you can return to the postseason.
May 2019: Welp, well below .500. Sorry boys, better luck next year.
October 2019: You made the playoffs? Wow, what a turnaround! Just beat the Brewers and you’re in the NLDS.
NL Wild Card Game: Oh great, Scherzer is choking in the 1st inning and now you’re down 4-1 in the 8th... wait, you came back and won? Well, you have to face the Dodgers now, so good luck.
NLDS: YOU WON A PLAYOFF SERIES! In heart stopping fashion too. Hopefully the hangover doesn’t last too long before you face the Cardinals.
NLCS: YOU DID IT. You’re FINALLY going to the World Series. Those arrogant Astros already got their title. All you need to do to end the Legacy of Failure is to GET IT DONE.
Games 1-2: You won both of the first two games in Houston! Full speed ahead at home boys!
Games 3-6 I... have no words. YOU BLEW ALL OF YOUR HOME GAMES!? How the hell do you expect to beat the Astros again on the road... wait, you won Game 6? And have Scherzer pitching Game 7? Wow, you have a legit shot. Just get it done boys.
Game 7: It’s official. The Legacy of Failure is OVER. You’ve won your first World Series while being one of the most lovable teams in recent memory. I’ll give you a tip of the cap, and a genuine congratulations.
Joseph Najarian I could actually read this comment in UT’s voice

Probably the latter of the 2 outcomes. After all, Washington, D.C.-based sports have been historically snake-bit.

Congratulations
The story of the Expos is just tragic, the story of the Nationals is pathetic.

They may have won a world series, but this video is still HIGHLY relevant in 2022
I disagree. With any broken Legacy of Failure video, I'd give the teams in question 5-10 year warranties, depending on the improbability of their victory.

@@THERobertL2000 I remember Pedro even dedicated the victory to Expos fans. Not sure if it helps console the Expos fans or made them feel worse despite his intention for the former.
I miss the Expos. I hope the Expos comeback they had the best uniforms of all time
Yes they did
I'm a Cardinals fan, but I always liked the Expos uniform, especially the logo.
Jaybird the television viewership dropped because they lost the rights to broadcast in the biggest TV market in Canada to the blue jays. They only had the exclusive rights to Quebec really. Combine that with the blue jays getting good in the mid-80s as the expos started to get to shit and you have a recipe for the team getting fucked. They couldn’t get much sponsors or much revenue from Television.
And also, blaming the expos being moved on the “lack of fan support” is ignoring the huge problems they had with blatant mismanagement and the fact that even when they were good, the MLBs playoff system historically fucked them over and hard. The lowering fan attendance was most likely a byproduct of it, as no one wants to spend the to see a failing baseball team and not many people enjoy spending the money to see their favorite team lose.
Eli Gulley that sucks
Eli Gulley that’s right. They also lost tv rights in Vermont and Plattsburgh to the Mets, Yankees and Red Sox
And thus, the legacy of failure has ended in 2019.
Mark my words the Expos would have won in 94 if there wasn’t a strike
They're so unlucky it's not even funny until this video. With that said, there's no guarantee they could have won but it was their best shot.
tru and tony gwynn would've hit .400
I'm a Mets fan but I kinda feel bad. Not so much for the Nationals because they deserve all the Hell they've gotten for giving Montreal the shaft.
I dunno, I honestly think they would've gone down hill at some point and would've lost in the post season to the Braves.
They wouldn't have.
I never knew the Expos actually used to win that much. Most historians briefly touch on them just talk about 94 and skip over all that. They seemed to win 85+ on a regular basis they might be the reason the wildcard exists
Yeah it's amazing how unlucky they were during some of those years. After the strike in 1994, they died.
The straw that broke the camel's back on the Wildcard was I think Barry Bonds' 1st or 2nd year with San Francisco. They won 100+ games and missed the playoffs because they didn't win their division.
Yeah, the Braves won 104 games in ‘93 and the Giants won 103. Braves won the West, Giants stayed home. That following year the wild card rule was put in place for the 1994 season.
@@tomvolz3760 The Wild Card was created so that MLB could get Yankees-Red Sox playoff games.
They would have won the division in 1979 and the wild card in 1987 and 1992 if there were the wild card system

Here after the Nationals win their first World Series. What a time to be alive.
Woof.
Nats got lucky. The Lerners are basically the McCaskeys. So chances are, you’re gonna win nothing for thirty years, because you overplayed an annoying song when you finally got yours.
This has got to be the best Legacy of Failure you've ever done, Tree. Be proud of yourself.
Knowing the Nats luck, MLB will revive the Expos who will then turn around and win the World Series before the Nats win a damn series.
Every Montrealer prays for this to become a reality. You have no idea how much sports fans in our city want a team back. Cheap and degenerate owners with a lack of fan appreciation and getting screwed by the MLB dynamics was this team’s downfall. Everything slowly crashes and burned after 94. I wish for the Expos to come back.
Montreal deserves a team back and some good luck on the diamond for once too... Make it right, MLB.

For those of you who can't read the text on Jeff Loria's tenure with the Expos, the titles say the Expos' attendance figures were dead last, nobody could get an English speaker to commentate on Expos games, Felipe Alou turned down a huge promotion with the Dodgers because of loyalty only to get fired by Jeff Loria and replaced with a personal friend of his that knew nothing about Day-to-Day baseball operations, and Jeff Loria took all of the computers, managers, coaching staff, and equipment with him to Miami. Anything that didn't have an Expos logo on it went to the Marlins.
A few days ago, I watched the D'backs vs Giants game. During the 2nd inning the bases were loaded and Brandon Belt stepped up to the plate. Before he started his at bat I jokingly said, "Agony thy name is Brandon Belt". Turned out that was a self-fulfilling prophecy. He hit a Grand Slam and I shouted that exact same quote.
If or when M.L.B. decides to expand again, Montreal DESERVES another shot at a competently-run professional team. Between the cavalcade of tightfisted/incompetent ownership the team dealt with and the crippling effects of the '94 strike on baseball in the area, it's the LEAST they can do.
Another Expos team would be interesting, but one thing to consider is will the new Expos do better or not?
Can't blame everything on the owners there.

Game 3: Strong Start. Nice. Juan Soto hits a 2 run Homer off Ryu, and Anibal Sanchez is pitching like a god. Maybe you can pull this off.

Game 5: Oh boy. Down 3-0, and Walker Buehler is dealing. Well great season boys.
7th Inning: You get Buehler out of the game. Dave Roberts brings in... Clayton Kershaw. Maybe there is a chance.
8th Inning: Kershaw goes full Kershaw and gives up Back to Back homers to Rendon and Soto... On back to back pitches. The hope is back.
10th Inning: HOWIE FUCKING KENDRICK. He redeems himself with a Grand Slam to put the game away, and the Dodgers hopes for a World Series.

NLCS Game 1: Anibal Sanchez pitches another gem, matter of fact he almost pitches a No Hitter against the Cards. You win Game 1.
NLCS Game 2: Mad Max Also pitches well. Also has a No Hitter in tact. You win Game 2, and head back home up 2-0. There is a chance you can clinch the Pennant at home.
NLCS Game 3: You blow out the Cardinals, and are up 3-0. You could do this. You can clinch the pennant in 4 games.
NLCS Game 4: This is it. You can clinch your first NL Pennant in franchise history. Do it. Make Bryce Harper eat a bag of shit.
1st Inning: You got two runs in the first. You might do this. the Cardinals forget how to defend. 3-0 Nats. Wait scratch that, it's 5-0 Nats. Wait, it's 7-0 Nats.
5th Inning: Patrick Corbin gives up 4 runs, but gets out of a tough situation. Hope your pen can finish it off
End of Game 4: You did it. You made the World Series. You swept the Cardinals. 4 more wins and it erases all of the failures as the Expos, the mid to late 2000’s, The Postseason Failure in this decade, and most importantly, stick it to Bryce Harper and the Phillies by winning the World Series in the first year without Harper. Get it done.
ALCS Game 6: Jose Altuve hits a Walk Off Clinching Home Run and Houston will be your opponent. Good God those Pitching Matchups will be 🔥🔥🔥
World Series Game 1: You are down 2-0 early, but you Score 5 runs off the Untouchable Gerrit Cole and Steal Game 1. Juan Soto has himself a game, and the Original National goes deep. Nice Win.
Game 2: It’s another pitching classic between two of the best. They got off to rough starts but have settled in. It might come down to whoever scores first.
7th Inning: My Goodness. Kurt Suzuki starts the beatdown. He hits a long homer off Verlander and you score 6 unanswered runs. You’re up 8-2. You might beat Cole & Verlander. Get it done.
End of Game 2: You blow out Houston. 12-3. You’re up 2-0 heading back home. It’s been over 80 years since the World Series has been in our nations capital. Anibal Sanchez is going for you. I expect a good game.
Game 3: Zack Grienke, and the Astros bullpen Shut down the Bats, and Houston is on the board in the series. Good thing for you is that you have Patrick Corbin going in game 4, while Houston is gonna use their bullpen. This is a golden opportunity to take a 3-1 lead in the series and push the Astros to the brink of Elimination and win your first ever Championship.
Game 4: And it looks like you’re gonna take the piss. Alex Bregman hits a massive Grand Slam off of Fernando Rodney in the 7th inning. Yep, this is probably gonna be a 2-2 tie heading into Game 5. Good News Though, you have Max Scherzer going. Bad News, you’re going against Gerrit Cole.
Game 5: Looks like Max Scherzer is out. Joe Ross is in. He allows two homers, the Umpires make some stupid ass calls, and George Springer hits a dagger in the Ninth. You’re going back down 3-2. It’s all on Strausburg, let’s see how he responds.
Game 6: A Back and fourth affair is happening. You Score one in the first, Houston responds with two. Alex Bregman pimps a Homer and gives the bat to the first base coach. You respond with home runs by Adam Eaton and Juan Soto in the fifth, and Soto responds to Bregman. I expect a good finish
7th inning: What the Fuck is Going On? Why did they call Trea Turner out on a bogus interference call? These Fucking Umpires man. Wait hold on, Anthony Rendon pimps a Homer. All of that bullshit is forgotten.
Game 7: Yuli Gurriel gets one off Max Scherzer, Carlos Correa follows suit in the 5th. Zack Grienke is looking untouchable. Not Good.
7th Inning: Anthony Rendon gets one off Grienke and he's taken out. Howie Kendrick steps up. Let's see what he does..... HOLY FUCKING SHIT. HE DID IT AGAIN. HOWIE FUCKING KENDRICK COMES UP CLUTCH, AND YOU'RE UP 3-2. Can you break the LOF?
End of Game 7: It’s Over. You Broke the Legacy of Failure. It was pretty fast too. You have gone from nearly firing Dave Martinez to the top of the baseball mountain.
You need to write a book on the 2019 Nationals.
Oh, wait, I think you just did.
I'm pretty sure everyone stopped reading this after the wild card bit. Also calling the Dodgers frauds then them winning the WS. 💀
When are we getting a detroit lions video
Never. They won a pre-Super Bowl Championship.

The Mariners have to be next in line for one of these videos. They wasted just as many generational talents as the Nationals and made the playoffs less.
Everyone that is not a Nationals fan has failed No Nut November.
I already failed before this video
You did an amazing job. Was a kid growing up in the 80s and I was a big fan of Gary Carter, Tim Wallach and Dennis Martinez. Then 1994... It was so glorious. My Expos were destroying everything in their path. The strike killed my baseball passion for a long long time.
YESS! YOUR FINALLY MADE THIS!!
November 11 2018, The day my heart sank as a nationals fan seeing a legacy of failure video on them after only 15 years. Atleast the Caps finally won the cup and the nats still have a future in Juan Soto, Victor Roblez, and Trae Turner
You guys did it, it’s over, the Nats won
@@dannychamberlain6244 And Jaun Soto is a Padre...
Who’s here after the Nationals won the World Series?!?
What pisses me off is that the Nationals in 2019 have no plans to pay homage to the Expos even though 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Expos' inception.
Quad B Hey you Nationals in the spirit of Urinating Tree, YOU BLEW IT! Now as all Nationals fans will witness, you as a franchise will eclipse the 1962 Mets in futility in 2019. What about taking over the 1899 Cleveland Spiders? Maybe. Then they'll have no choice but to relocate to Montreal. BTW, 2019 will be exactly 120 years after the Spiders had that 20-134 season and then called it quits as a team.
This was also the 25th anniversary of the strike that canceled the World Series and screwed the Expos out of a chance to go for a title (74-40)
I think they capped off their 50th anniversary season pretty good
At least Washington has a championship in the 21st century.
And it's the one he hated, lol.
iamhungey12345 he hates. I'm pretty sure Tree's still bitter about their win.
And now Dusty Baker also won a World Series...
...against Bryce Harper
2012 was the peak and valley of my sports fandom. The nats were so dope but more than any of the cool stuff they did, I remember holding back grown-man tears as I threw my nlcs tickets in the garbage. Storen fucking haunts my dreams.
Not only that, but Alfred Morris and RGIII were the two most fun players in the league. I was at that game against the seahawks and when RGIII got hurt, some guy turned to me and said, "well that's the end of his career". I called him an idiot to his face. 😪
The Vancouver Canucks will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next season. What better way to compliment this achievement then with a glorious Legacy of Failure. Come on, Urinating Tree. You know you want too.
Stand in line: fans of the St. Louis Blues have suffered longer.
@@cedricgist7614 Tree already did a video for the Blues

This and the recent Washington Nationals video is now relevant.
Not really
They have their WS. The recent one yeah.
They will go down as the prime example of a team winning a championship in their last shot (well, maybe the Chicago Bulls).
@@sawyertuide7636 Who knows?
I love these legacy of failure vids so much.

Papeldouche was good in Boston... then when he went to the NL East, Papeldouche was born
Pekka Rinne is too good right now
First, the Blues. Then, the Raptors. Now, the Nats. This has truly been a year of breaking Legacies of Failure.
And if you count Super Bowl LIV as 2019, it wasn't over.
Ah yes, the Walgreens sponsor!
2019 Nats=WORLD SERIES BOUND

I’m not gonna lie you don’t jinx yourself with these videos, you just set the mood for great comeback stories. Great content keep it coming!
We need a Washington Wizards lolcow video.
@ZECTCustomUnit That was until then owner Abe Polin decided to change the team's name due to D.C. crime rate.
To think the one time they won was when they were the Bullets. Also lol at Arenas and his gun.
No no man! The Wizards deserve a legacy of a failure video.
Relocate them to Baltimore, we need the Bullets back😊
@@joesakic91 Worst name change ever, also, the Hornets to Pelicans. The bobcats were pretty bland as well. NCAA have the best names, logos and mascots anyway. The current NBA jersies are a snoozefest.

1998 World Series:
Holy Shit, Tim Raines has another ring with the Yankees!
October 30th, 2019: the Washington Nationals are World Champions, thus terminating the Legacy of Failure.
in less than 24 month 3 legacy of failure videos have become obsolete. I salute you sir for your videos have aided in making the sports world less predictable and entertaining to watch, not easy to bet on though.
When you think about it, the 1990s Expos assuming they had success without the strike fucking it up, they could have been like the 1970s A's where they formed a dynasty from their talents they had produced (and a fleecing of the Dodgers some years before that). Really sucks to be the Expos.
The legacy of failure is over they won the world series
The Washington Nationals just won the World Series!
This video went from being debunked to immediately being correct again the span of 3 years

@@johnjamele One team can ruin that run, the Houston Astros. They may still have to deal with the Yankees, but if so I see a potential Stausburg vs Cole match up. And now I probably jinxed the Astros.
Hard to believe the Expos traded both Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson during the 90’s. What could’ve been, damn
So let’s go over the legacies of failure that have been broken in the past 2 years.
2017: The Eagles win their first Super Bowl and the Astros win their first World Series
2018: The Capitals win their first Stanley Cup
2019: The Raptors win their first Championship, the Blues win their first Stanley Cup, and now the Nationals win their first World Series Title.
Yeah. A lot of narratives have been broken in the past 2 years. What a time to be alive.
This whole decade has been incredible. The 2010 Giants ended 56 years of failure. The 2013 Seahawks finally won a Super Bowl. The Cavaliers won the NBA finals in 2016. The Royals ended 30 years of absolute failure and losing by winning the 2015 World Series. The Cubs ended 108 years of failure in 2016.
@Harry Engel Not to mention Raptors didn't have a LoF video either though UT seem to hinted that he was planning to work on that.
@Harry Engel as right now, 11, actually: Suns, Clippers, TimberWolves, Magic, Hornets/Bobcats, Pelicans, Grizzlies, Nets, Nuggets, Pacers, Jazz
I don't know if I should count the Atlanta Hawks since ,tecnically, they won one (as St. Louis Hawks), the same can be said by the Kings (as Rochester Royals), Wizards (as Baltimore Bullets) andOKC (as Seattle SuperSonics)
@@iamhungey12345 yeah, It's a shame we didn't get to see it, I was waiting for It to happen
@@felixmartinez1100 Indeed since they had great materials before they finally won it. Granted Durant was hurt but still better to win it rather than not.
The expos story was a tragedy the nationals story is a comedy
I legit rooted for the Nats until the decision to shut down Strasburg. Just struck me as hubris to the highest degree that they assumed they'd have a wide open window for years and could afford punting such a golden chance. No morons, grasp at those straws with all of your might and don't give up without a fight. You never know when your window will close, you can't afford to deliberately sabotage your chances!
This is an old and stupid take. The point was to protect his arm so that he'll be productive for the remainder of his contract, period. Look at what happened to Matt Harvey after he went beyond his limit in 2015. Look at what happened Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy of the Braves. Both superior pitchers before the Braves dogged their arms and ended up needing second TJ surgeries. Never heard much from them after that. Even MLB analysts who disagreed with it were backpedaling over the years from their initial reaction in '12.
And finally- if you were truly rooting for the Nats, you would've remembered that Stras lost steam towards the end of the season and was the least effective out the entire rotation. The media members who made a big deal out of it were just really looking for something to talk about.
2019 yesterday the nationals beat the dodger in the nlds
2019:
You beat the Brewers in the NL Wild Card round in thrilling fashion after being down 3-1 at the bottom of the 8th. Now in the NLDS, you're going to face the top-seeded 106-win Dodgers, a team you're very familiar with in the playoffs whenever you face them: lead the series 2-1, only to collapse. In a rematch of the 2016 NLDS, will you win your first playoff series in 38 years or will it be another chapter in your legacy of failure?
TheGameCube64Guy Speaking of the Brewers, I can see a new Legacy of Failure video coming up soon...
Gage M. Probably not. The brewers manage to be pretty successful considering the budgetary issues they have.
And as to be expected, they've already gotten shut out in game one.
They're tied 1-1 heading back to DC.
Game 3: Dodgers take a 2-1 series lead after a 6th inning explosion propels them to a 10-4 victory.
Game 4: Nationals are likely to force Game 5 after a 4-run 5th inning. Will they finally win a playoff series for the first time in their franchise or will history repeat itself?
Quickest legacy of failure to become outdated, Congratulations Nats

I wasn't even mad the Cards got swept by them in 2019 though. I was still riding high from the Blues FINALLY winning the Cup (and kicking boston in the teeth in game 7 to do so). Congrats to the Nationals and their fans for that 2019 championship, you all deserved it after what you went through to get there.
