I love how scott has mentioned spongebob a total of maybe 3 times across the channels whole life, but in this video, it's like all he ever talks about is spongebob
@@zuzuo.0754I could have sworn a couple of his videos have actually been shown on Nickelodeon, but trying to confirm it just brings up G4. Can anyone else confirm this happened or am I just crazy?
It's because SpongeBob is the most memed property of all time, and Scott avoids sticking memes in his videos because he worries they'll date them. He could not avoid it here though lmao
Imagine being friends with Scott and having a PS2/Xbox, playing God of War, GTA San Andreas, Halo, Forza, Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Fable, Black. And the day Scott comes to your house, he scoffs at your PS2/Xbox, claiming how the Gamecube is superior. And when he invites you to his house, all he has for his Gamecube is SpongeBob games. LMAO
It's actually insanity. Even beyond spongebob which had a couple good games, he bought crap shoot after crapshoot after crapshoot after crapshoot after crapshoot. I feel like he was primed to want shit with all those licensed games his parents got him early on. I can't believe he came out of this experience actually enjoying video games hahahaha.
It's crazy what you're willing to deal with as a kid. Like I owned a bunch of games as a kid. Probably more good games then scott did... But I also owned games like Zoop and spiderman and X-men arcades revenge which were not good games in the least (well, arcade's revenge ain't good. I dunno what the general opinion on Zoop is but I never liked it ) but I still popped them in plenty 'cause I owned them so I might as well play them. I could delete my file in A Link to the Past and probably get more outta it then space football or lethal weapon but I still popped those games in from time to time despite never enjoying them. And honestly, it seems like most of the "bad games" that scott had were just bland and mediocre. Meanwhile I also owned an atari 2600 and while I did have plenty of good games on that like Ms. Pacman and River Raid... I also owned E.T. so I don't think scott did that bad with his childhood collection lol.
@@aniyilator Eh. If I remember correctly, I got it alongside Q*bert, Frogger, and Yars revenge at goodwill. I think they were some of the last atari games I got. As a kid I thought Yars Revenge was broken every time I played it, but Q*bert was decent and Frogger's always great so not all was lost. I also own like, 2 copies of the atari port of Pacman which I actually despise more than E.T. At least E.T. had an excuse for being garbage...
53:27 to be fair to Scott's mom, if I was a parent who probably saw what og video games looked like I'd also be really impressed that a licensed kids games has any level of graphical fidelity. I mean, when she was young the most impressive video game ever was probably like, burger time or something
The fact that it’s based on an animated CGI movie would really help, too, on a CRT the textures would look like the film on DVD and the environment being an open world on the GameCube release would be actually cool if you hadn’t kept up with games. Hell, that’s why I had something like 60 hours in the damn thing when *I* was a kid.
That, and shovelware. Lots and lots of shovelware. Then again that was 90% of the Wii's library aside from 1st party titles. A pattern that continues now on Switch.
At first I was flabbergasted at all the SpongeBob games Scott kept getting, and than I remembered that I once went broke buying Skylanders. We all have our pretty unremarkable games that we loved as kids.
"How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?!" 😂 I heard this line from the show in my head every time he bought another bad game SpongeBob (/Nicktoons) game. XD
@@bobbyshewan4229I feel like Scott’s justification of “I liked SpongeBob so that’s what people got me” was very similar to my own experience, except I liked Star Wars so as a kindergartner in 2003 I got Star Wars bounty Hunter, rogue squadron 2, and Star Wars clone wars (the vehicle combat sim one not based on the series), and later on Star Wars battlefront and KOTOR (which alongside the gbc dragon quest ports of all things taught me how to read). Can’t help but feel I lucked out liking Star Wars at that time in my life.
@@theharvardyard2356You see, I’m Scott’s local doctor, Scott not only is colorblind but also has super rare condition called SpongeBob-Game blindness, he sees every game as a SpongeBob game, which explains his game collection.
Love how much Scott talks about playing games with his parents in this. I always felt like a loser playing games with my Mom, but now those are some of my fondest memories
@user-du9hn8ht6q my mom still talks about mario party 8 as the poo poo game because yoshi would say poo poo if you shook the wii remote during someone elses turn.
Even though my dad refused to let me win, I cherish playing Tekken with him on the PS2 and Super Mario on some weird bootleg NES that had games preinstalled but could read cartridges. It was a lot of fun
Well, this gonna be probably Scott the Woz and WiiU's toxic relationship. But yeah, would be cool see him playing more games when he starts collecting them
honestly just a deep dive into the history of how he got his whole game collection from this point to now (he already does share all new purchases on nintendo switch made but it'd be nice to get to hear about stuff he plays on other consoles) that a trilogy or something else such as a special or even a little scotts stash minimal editing type longform commentary would be a great video.(its late i can't sleep so i forget how many episodes there are.)
I genuinely thought this was gonna be a prank video of just Scott talking about licensed and shovelware games. Also I’d say Mario Sunshine is the first 3D game on this entire list that’s actually like good.
Scott’s parents being so supportive of him as a child playing video games honestly makes me so happy, hearing the efforts his mum went to finding a wii for him
@@coreylineberry8557Okay no offense but this is the fifth video I’ve watched where someone says something like this. I know I’m going in to deep but people who have to make everyone else’s support and happiness as a gateway and outlet to complain and vent their trauma make me feel bad for the OP.
Its very cute but also big only child energy, only children gotta entertain themselves. Parents can't just yell go outside and play with your siblings when they didn't provide any. The parents also have more money to spend making the kid more "spoiled" and toy rich. 1/6 siblings being obsessed with video games looks more antisocial than the only child who would be playing alone in the corner regardless. Games are also a massive source of fights to bigger families lol
Its refreshing seeing a RUclipsr talking about his childhood starting in the 2000's. I'm so used to hear stories from the 90's and how awesome the SNES was that this was so fun to see
I wouldn't call this completely accurate as he did start with a lot of retro games at that time etc. I still found his perspective interesting though and i'm looking forward to watching the second half soon. I would probably find it more relatable if I was born a few years earier idk I only experience the end of the early 2000s I wouldn't call some of those games like BFBB mediocre though, but I do see why some people don't like them or grow out of them.

this is probably the best/my favorite scott the woz video. it’s so cool to see the humble beginnings of his love for video games and to be able to see similarities to my own experience with games
@@eiichiroseis that a thing that would be mentioned in the video? This cousin Could be gay. Or they could be a woman. I don’t think that was relevant besides the boyfriend getting NSMBWii. But I don’t wanna come off as rude. Just my through
@@dustojnikhummer I thought the female variant of a cousin is a couisine? Or a coucos? Incredibly bad math jokes aside, I think the confusion stems from Scott having mentioned a male cousin (as used "he") that he played with multiple times, but obviously he can have multiple cousins. And considering how much he must've absorbed the virginity of those around him, his uncles and aunts must have had a lot of sex over the years.
2:00:24 The cousin's boyfriend going above and beyond by spending $50 on a big, new game for a little kid in his girfriend's family is so wholesome. What a nice guy.
Using Brawl to listen to music is something I did often as a kid. In fact I think I spent more time staring at the sound menu more than I ever did playing the actual game.
Scott is like if a guy collected guitars and had 100s of them on his wall and knew every spec of every guitar and then when you ask him to play a song he only knows the first two chords of wonderwall
Scott had the experience of someone who would later say that he had outgrown video games, but he weirdly kept playing until he acquired some good taste
Young Scott saving all the Mario box art images from Wikipedia to his family computer for no other reason than “just because” has to be one of the most relatable things ever
The deeper I get into this video the more baffled I get. The thought of this 12 year old requesting so much shovelware after having the ability to check the internet for quality games is insane.
Tbh I was trying not to judge but like when I was 11 I was playing fallout 3 fuck tons of minecraft and black ops. I can't beleve after playing 8 shitty games he was like one more please.
@@putinslittlehacker4793 yeah once i was around 10ish, i had a pretty good idea of what i liked and what i didn't. crazy how scott was just so dedicated to licensed and weird gimmicky games
For real!!!! I can't believe one of the biggest gamer RUclipsrs grew up with this garbage lol! The first game I ever played was ceasers palace on SNES.... My second.... Chrono Trigger.... Life changed
It was driving me kinda crazy how different his and my experiences as early gamers where, considering I'm only 9 months older than him, my first videogame console was an n64 on the year 2000 with mario 64, mario party 2 and mario kart 64. I had aaa lot of mario games growing up, maybe because my dad used to enjoy super mario brothers and duck hunt when he was in his 20ties
@@AtomicBoo My first experience was with an old 1000 in 1 with hundreds of old NES titles, I remember playing track and field on it. Then it was mario bros deluxe on my Gba, then my first home console was the playstation with crash 3, Spyro 3, CTR, and an old booklet of games from a car boot sale. Die hard, Doom, James Bond.
I am no person like him, if I stepped into a series and tried the bad entry, my temper didn't allow me to retry another one within 3 years. I am just too careful, not bold enough to purchase something that might be risky. But still I am the same kind of person like him, I would be sad if I purchased Ds Browser software with no home wifi setup
Real talk, it sounds like you had parents that genuinely liked that you had a safe hobby to keep you occupied and even tried to foster it by getting you games they saw you play before. Many kids didn't have that and were told their hobby was invalid.
It's also genuinely fascinating to see how even afterwards, he'd insist on getting the console and portable versions of specific licensed games. Feels very fitting with the kinds of videos he's interested in making.
@@CurtisAlfeldThose other franchises definitely fared a lot better (well, Harry Potter games kinda fell off a cliff at Goblet of Fire and Pokemon has recently started to suck). Maybe Scott would have enjoyed them more than the SpongeBob games as a kid.
I find it amazing how Scott is a Nintendo megafan and we all thought he grew up with a million Nintendo made games when in reality he grew up with ALL the Spongebob games
It was relatable in such a strange way because my parents are divorced and for most of my childhood I had siblings at my dad's house but not my mom's so half the time I was exactly this and the other half of the time I was a middle child PBS kid
@@theharvardyard2356some people just get lucky! My first console was my neighbour's banged up N64, but it came with Goldeneye and Mario Kart. Finally got a cheap PS2 years later and it came with Ico and Battlefront 2- whether or not the person you're buying from has taste is probably what determines most kids' taste
@theharvardyard2356 It's kind of weird to think about. I didn't really go after licensed games like that. I got A Bug's Life on PS1 when it was new and I was 8, but I still mostly went after the straight game properties growing up.
I think on a personal level, this video concept is actually something amazing. Scott essentially listed his video game-associated childhood memories with great detail in video format, making it something that he can watch throughout his life and reminisce on, as he gets older and memories begin to gradually fade.
@@tuscan4174 yeah unfortunately the existentialism is a product of my own perspective on the video. I’m only a year older than Scott, and I wish I could remember this much detail about the games I played, where I got them, who I played them with, and the memories we shared. I can’t help but think about the fact that I’m 27 now and i probably have lost a small portion of my childhood memories forever already, and it’s not going to get any better. It’s just great that Scott can look back at this at any point in life and easily be reminded of all the great memories video games gifted him
Scott being a "bonus features" kid was probably the most unexpectedly relatable part of this retrospective. If a movie I liked had a blooper reel on its DVD, I would insist on watching it! However, the bonus feature I watched the most was for Snow Buddies, where the voice actors for the puppies did a whole audio commentary entirely in character.
that happened to everyone, especially if you grew up in that time when looking up guides in the internet wasn't as easy. In my case, i'm from a spanish speaking country, but a lot of the games i got were in english, so i didn't understood shit and got stuck a lot in games that weren't simple like guitar hero and Tony Hawk lol
Happened with me too. I needed help getting out of the starting towns in Pokemon. Though I did manage to make it far in pure platforming games like Mario. I guess I just didn't read as a kid.
@@cubedmelons876 Considering how I didn't know how to SAVE in Pokemon for the first couple of days, i have no idea how I got through the rest of the game. I'm pretty sure it took me hours to stumble around trying to figure out what to do with Pokemon Tower.
Scott and I are the same age and I’m realizing that having an older sibling really saved me from the licensed video game curse. I just basically inherited a library of games and consoles and I’m so thankful I didn’t have to build my own collection bc I’m 100% positive it would’ve been all SpongeBob as well.
Must've been born with good taste, the only licensed shit I got my mom got for me as a gift lol (bless her heart, I appreciated them all immensely as we were rather poor)
Having an older sibling effects all media youre exposed too, its crazy. I'm 21 and people my age talk about watching first gen Nick and Disney shows, having a VHS collection and gameboys. Never saw those things in my house because I was the first child
@Minkfang Upon reading your comment, honestly same. I'm 23 and the oldest of 3 siblings. I think my cousins kept me in touch with a lot of the early childhood cartoons and VHS memories I have, but I certainly felt there was a barrier for me in terms of video games that I wasn't able to cross for years. As the oldest, I was a pioneer of the DS and Wii for my sister, and was teased with a Game Boy Color in 2010. I later found a SNES at a hotel's lost and found and convinced my parents to ask thr owners to let me keep it. The 90's were something I never got to inherit from older siblings, which is why the late 2000's media feels like home to me.
Only child here and a little less than a year younger than Scott and wow I'm glad I wasn't sucked into the licensed game hole too much. Sure, I owned Hot Wheels World Race and Cars the video game, but most of my other GameCube titles were all first party. I played Mario Sunshine at a McDonald's, saw an ad for the MP7 and GameCube bundle and wanted that for Christmas since I knew Sunshine was played on a GameCube and I thought MP7 was Sunshine. Come to my surprise it wasn't, so my dad ran out to Toys R Us before the end of the year to pick up Sunshine for me after I got the video game title from the back of my GameCube box. But playing Mario Party encouraged me to get the other Mario Parties for GameCube at used video game stores and one of those trips my mom suggested I buy Paper Mario TTYD and although I had provided some pushback it was an amazing suggestion. I was a Mario fanboy throughout as most of the video games I had were Mario games cuz I knew they were always a good time, but at least it saved me from the shovelware of GameCube and Wii games some kids got cuz the games were cheaper than a first party Nintendo game.
The way that Scott writes videos about his childhood seriously, seriously gave me non-existent, albeit parallel feelings of nostalgia to his. The length of an afternoon in front of a TV screen, the lamenting how much you stayed in your comfort zone, the unhealthy attachment to nickelodeon that had no reason lasting for as long as it did, the sensations of playing multiplayer games all by yourself, the casuality of friendship then - Scott - you write about childhood very accurately and leave truly no stone unturned.
I’ve come back and fully rewatched this video at least four times now… I don’t know why I like it so much but it’s an absolute masterpiece and I wish I had the skills to make a similar one about my own childhood games, because they had a similar impact on me
I've also rewatched this video serval times and it was a video that I wanted after watching the "RPG guy" special I would say it's interesting seeing Scott's childhood gaming history after hearing him talk about gaming history in general and I am hoping we get a follow up video to this one where he keeps going from the age of 14 to maybe when he is 20 because I would interested to see what happens next
Can we talk a moment about how Scott is actually doing animations for his videos?????? Like that's his artstyle, the guy really just said to himself ''hmmm, oh can I make my videos 12x harder to make'' AND HE F*CKING DID IT!! What an absolute legend. Scott, please never stop doing what you love, it's a beautiful thing to see.
This is by far my favorite Scott video, it brings me right back to my own childhood and all the gaming memories I was fortunate enough to make. Personally my childhood was dominated by handheld games because my dad worked at a used car dealership cleaning out recently purchased cars and he would often come home with lost gameboy and ds games he found hidden between seats and such. Needless to say I had quite the extensive collection for a child!
A game that stands out to me is Transformers Decepticons for the DS. Having revisited it somewhat recently, it honestly handles pretty poorly but still you have several little open worlds to drive around in and get in police chases, it scratches that GTA itch more than Chinatown Wars ever did and nobody ever talks about it.
time to waste another 3 hours of this historical drama about wii games and spongebob games for years on fucking end... AAAGGGHHHHH... I WAS HOPING FOR A PART 2 OF THE WII U DEEP LORE NOT THIS TALKING SHIT ABOUT CHILDHOOD GAMING MEMORIES PLAYING KIDS GAME. WHAT THE FUCK?
I find it neat that Sonic 2 had such a hold on you because I was born in '89 and I remember gettng Sonic 2 as my very first game as a four year old kid on a Genesis that my dad bought originally for himself with Sonic 2, Evander Holyfield's Heavyweight Boxing and Madden 94. Thanks a ton dad. You inspired me to ruin the lives of my nieces and nephews with video games damn near 30 years later. Trauma really is generational.
I love to put on RUclips at night, fall asleep with autoplay, and then wake up to Scott's videos like an Angel decended from Heaven and reviewed Gameboy Advance. What a beautiful dream!
It truelly is a retrospective like no other, and honestly makes me want to reflect the same views I had growing up on stuff I liked compared to what I think of them now
I enjoyed how relatable it was, I imagine I'm not alone. The specific details of my own introduction into videogames are different, I got a pawn shop N64 instead of a relatives Genesis as my first home console, and I obviously didn't the exact same games (though there was a lot of overlap with the most random games in this video). But starting with that and a GBC and then moving to a GBA and eventually a DS and Wii, as well as being an only child, meant that I ended up with a lot of the same types of games and I recall using much of the same kid logic when picking a game from the store. TL;DR This video definitely had me reflecting on my own experiences with being introduced to videogames circa 2001-2010.
This is Scott Wozniak we’re talking about, the guy could talk about instruction manuals for hours given the chance. I think he, above all else, likes *the aesthetics* of gaming
@@leonro Yeah, there's still a good number of really cool ones still, but a lot of ones nowdays feel rather basic and boring. Need more like Xenoblade DE, NieR Automata, GOW 2018, Cuphead, because there are some that are painfully boring, GGST has one of the worst Title Screens I've seen in my life, in a series about bold visual direction it's a static almost silent title screen that takes a minute to load. Definitely some great ones still, but not as many consistently cool/creative ones, however not a dead art, I must say I woefully mourn the creativity of 2000s DVD Main Menus, the Shrek 2 DVD was so damn good because of it's one and the many bonus goodies, you can tell they had a lot of fun making it.

LMAO
And when he gets the opportunity to check out any game on any modern console 360/ps3/wii, my man picks BOOGIE. Scott is a national treasure.
Black was a good classic
If i learned anything from this episode, you could spray paint a rock yellow and call it spongebob and Scott would buy 20 of them
At $60 each

It's actually insanity. Even beyond spongebob which had a couple good games, he bought crap shoot after crapshoot after crapshoot after crapshoot after crapshoot. Real
It’s genuinely a miracle that Scott actually grew up to like video games when there’s like 5 good games in a 2 hour video
I have it on good authority that Scott doesn't like video games.

@@phoenixwright784I'm so sorry about E.T. man, that's therapy worthy for sure
Scott being a massive SpongeBob fan makes his humour so much more understandable
53:27 to be fair to Scott's mom, if I was a parent who probably saw what og video games looked like I'd also be really impressed that a licensed kids games has any level of graphical fidelity. I mean, when she was young the most impressive video game ever was probably like, burger time or something
I never thought about it like that
The fact that it’s based on an animated CGI movie would really help, too, on a CRT the textures would look like the film on DVD and the environment being an open world on the GameCube release would be actually cool if you hadn’t kept up with games.
Hell, that’s why I had something like 60 hours in the damn thing when *I* was a kid.
@@E3kHatenaor maybe it was a fun game and you put a lot of hours in it cause you liked it ?

How Scott became a gamer is a miracle based off his first 5 years of games

After seeing this whole video. I agree.
