If the mini has an Enet port, run a Cat5/6 wire from the dish to the trailer and plug into your own WiFi router, so the distance limitation of the built-in WiFi is no longer an issue.
And then put both the power cable and the Enet cable in a "tube" so you only have one cable to run from the RV to the dish. Doesn't get any easier than that.
This is probably what will push me over the edge to subscribe to StarLink. My primary use case is travel/car camping in a Tesla Model Y. I'd been debating Starlink for a while and the smaller size and integrated router is clutch.
A minor correction... WiFi 6 isn't "more powerful" than WiFi 5. The same FCC power limits apply. WiFi 6 has what's called "beam forming", which can aim that power in a general direction.
As for speed, WiFi 5 is already WAY faster than the Starlink connection. Heck, even the old 802.11n 2.4GHz-only link is faster. The only way I can see anyone being able to tell the difference between WiFi5 and 6 is if they have 100+ WiFi devices (smart home sensors?) all trying to use one ccess point at the same time.
And if you're worried about not being able to get the signal inside your RV, then use wired Ethernet to a WiFi 6 access point inside the RV...
A practical and easily doable solution.
12v and usb-c LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
What kind of power bank ya thinking?
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......Camping.........
20 volts
I'd like to see it powered by POE as well.
I am surprised they didn't just integrate a 2 hour battery to make the unit completely self-contained. At 25W power consumption it would have added a little bit of weight but also make it a truly portable solution for recreation and emergency use.
not really. I have a 5 AH 12V battery right here. (that's 60 Watt-hours, so just over 2 ours at 25 watts, but you really can't use 100%. it weighs another 3 pounds, but it's a lead-based gel-cell.. But still, even a lithium battery is going to be a significant weight increase. If I have to place it on top of a camper or a boat, or at a camp-site, do I really want a big battery built in? Not me.
Perhaps they can add low powered Mesh WiFi networking system, a bit like battery/Type-C powered Google WiFi points you can expand your WiFi mesh from the Mini for.. Or you could Ethernet to any WiFi6, WiFi7 router/mesh system..
I got "invited" to test the product at $599 and and extra $30 a month. I was considering it until I got to the part about the 50gb data cap.. Now not only am I not interested, I'm concerned for the future of my current unlimited data access. Data caps are of the devil!
Thanks for the great info. My interest in SL performance is on the low power side so I’m happy to sacrifice Wi-Fi range for low power consumption. Now I just hope the subscription plan is also low cost.
Great informative video. My goto site for new SL news. I have the ver 2 dish and works great on my TT rood using the pivot mount. I may buy the SL mini as another option for use when i am not using my RV trailer.
Great stuff!
I guess Download speed will be fine, perhaps 50-60% of the regular v3/v4 Dish, but I guess also Upload speed will be quite a bit slower compared to a full sized dish. Anyone know what speeds one can expect? I like Type-C PD charge is supported. I guess it might've been cool if the Mini included 4-8hr battery life, to function totally independently wirelessly, where the Type-C PD 100W power bank just extends the battery life for it.. How fast will it use 20'000mAh 100W power bank while running?
Hopefully is ip68. Because this kinda looks tailor made for campervan/RVs. 12v, 15m cable….
Sounds perfect. Hopefully it doesn’t have any more dropouts than the regular antenna, and same speed as well. Would plug my own router and boom! Perfection
Great video. When do you think it will be available in the US?
If it is 40 feet away could you run weatherproof Ethernet along side of the dc power cable?
Great Intel thanks...
I have been waiting for a portable system that operates on 12 Volts, as soon as it's released in Australia I will purchase one for my RV.
Hi thanks for the info! So my invite expires on the 4th. Any word on LAN access between the Mini and the home system? Trying to think of a reason to get it.
awesome!!
Is there an external RJ45 port accessory? I don’t use their wi-if anyway.
So wifi 6 is technically more powerful because it can use the same power per antenna, but more antennas. That said, this dish has lower bandwidth (to the satelites) and likely wouldn’t benefit from the faster wifi. That said, it should work with PoE and the mesh 3 box should work with it, abet as an add-on. The other limitation is that the longest cable is 15m/48ft. Kinda short for camping. I’d love to know if the standard’s cables would work with it.
Would have loved the power cable to be USB C that transmitted Power and Data. And pretty sure 2.4 WiFi would be the best as it gets the best range and can already handle the probable real world speeds.
the cigarette lighter adapter you are hoping for exists already on Amazon ( I put 2 of them in my truck )
Look forward to seeing the minis arrival here in England soon ?
For a little as I use my dish a 24hr pass for something like $20 would be of value for me
I find it odd there is no mention of 802.3bt/POE++ on the ethernet. If you use your own router, you then have to run ethernet and power to the dish. I think some users have used their own router with POE to power the dish on previous versions.
This looks good for my camper trailer. As it is all metal, getting wifi from outside may be a problem. The low power and DC supply makes it much easier to use.
I’m thinking the same. I have a blog post coming out tomorrow morning about the Mini accessories that are going to be available. What they are doing with the Mini and the accessories makes no sense unless the Ethernet port can power the dish from the Gen 3 router.
The docs are easy to find in the Starlink app. Easy. Took me about 30 seconds.
Very cool
POE++ would be nice
Will I be able to buy the mini dish for camping and when I get home use my more powerful dish. Configure which dish is active on the website?
Currently what you would have to do is have two subscriptions, one for each dish. Your home dish would be on Residential, and you keep paying that monthly. Your Mini dish would be on a Roam subscription so you can travel with it. With Roam, you can pay on a monthly basis, pausing the service when you aren't traveling. There is no way right now to have two dishes on the same plan to rotate between the two.
So how many watts of power does it draw?
great news
QUESTION can you link the spec sheet and install guide
Spec sheet: api.starlink.com/public-files/specification_sheet_mini.pdf
Install guide: api.starlink.com/public-files/installation_guide_mini_kit.pdf
The v4 is also available in the developer section. Maybe the big v4 also has a router in it
V4 is another name for the Gen 3 Standard.
@@StarlinkHardware Oh. Thanks.
@@StarlinkHardware I think that's the latest version
You can only get the mini is you have Starlink already and it's 30 bucks more. Only 50gb data then pay for more... And the mini kit will cost 599 bucks. Very expensive and not happy with the 50gb. If it has to be an add-on to your current subscription then you should be able to have your current data allowance.
I was interested until I found out the standalone subscription costs, not to mention that the hardware costs more than standard. I'll keep the current setup at an affordable $150 a month which I pause 6 months out of the year. I would never have starlink at home since it's so much slower and more expensive than the fiber in our neighborhood so the add-on price is irrelevant.
Wi-Fi 5 only? Nothing the Beryl AX MT3000 can’t handle. Disable the WiFi and lower power usage when plugged into a power bank.
i am a gaming on my laptop and my Xbox one does this work with mini I don't like cost so much money for it
Why cant they just design the DC input using PD 3.1 with a type c power port
Have to pay a royalty, is my guess per each unit.
@@_hammyhamster_ think u mix up with Lightning cables
The price will half of standard, interesting
Nope, wifi 6 cannot penetrate walls as effectively as wifi 5, in this application, wifi 5 is the way to go. Speed will not be affected.
Hard to beat the TMobile Home Internet setup, we’ll see
T-Mobile’s portable pricing is OUTRAGEOUS. Starlink is cheaper
@@pjdrives5261 What? It’s $50/mo. That’s as cheap as it gets
Idk how I feel about usb c. The connection itself it’s super fragile. They should use a screw on connection for usb c.
The main power connection is NOT USB-C. The USB-C adapter is to be able to power the dish from a USB-C PD power source, like a battery bank.
remember speed is only 100 mbs so they don't need WIFI faster than AC. AC wifi can pull down down almost 500 mbs so why does it need wifi 6?
Your max wifi speeds drop very quickly the further you are away. If you also stay in an RV, you can be sure, the wifi will not reach you if the dish is 15m away. At least not with usably connection quality/speeds.
@@ytluckynuts wifi 5 has a further distance than wifi 6 depending on chipset used. And this dish is not looking to be used 100 meters away it only comes with a 15m cable.
Where do I buy this Starling equipment Can you provide me the website
It’s not out yet for most places. www.Starlink.com
@@StarlinkHardware we have people here in the Marshall Islands using starlink but I don't know where they buy from
semoga cepat rilis di indonesia
I don’t buy your WiFi 5/6 reasoning. It needs WiFi 6. The power set up seems good though. Until the monthly subscription comes down or gets real, it’s not worth it for us.
Why does it need 6? 5 is already faster than Starlink.
wifi router - no problem - old wifi still much faster than satellite WAN
Videos are informative but your audio levels are real low. Get an audio tech to help you with that.
It was only 1 day ago that you uploaded that video. Not a long time ago.
$600 for the kit.
Sounds awesome but I still won’t be buying one until they lower the subscription price. $150 for Internet for my RV is ridiculous. $75 would be fair. Come on Elon. Not all of us are made of money.
There is talk on the net that there may well be a cheaper plan for the mini dish that is limited to 500GB/month to compete with 4G/5G.
I want to see a cheaper pay by the GB plan for these lower speed dishes. So you only pay for when you actually use it during camping trips. Or even like you said, something month to month that is half the cost since we will get half the speed from the Mini. I’d even be fine with a cheap Roam plan that has a soft data cap.
Dude, $150 is extremely reasonable. You own a freakin RV….
@I2AT how is that reasonable? People go camping maybe one weekend a month!
I think $150 is very reasonable for the performance, flexibility you get with this setup
How is a post on the Starlink page a “leak” LOL
In this case, the document/page wasn’t posted anywhere on the site. You had to manually guess the URL in order to see it. Starlink didn’t intend for the info to be published yet, hence leak. And yes, the word definitely helps click through rates on the video, so there is that too!
What the ******. It should have a usb-c port on the device like any other device in 2024. This is half baked.
