50GB cap with $1 per GB after the fact makes me feel like I'm in the early 2000's again
The data limit and being tied to a home package is a deal breaker. Want the small package and lower power usage for overlanding camping adventures. Looks like the big dish will have to due for now. Great channel and info.
It’s an odd decision for sure. Even at $599, I think a lot more people would order if you could just use it with normal Roam.
The data limit reminds me of cellular broadband plans which often have aggressive data limits. I guess if you are doing nothing but surfing a few websites, this is fine, but for any normal user of streaming video etc this isn't going to work.
@@StarlinkHardwaremy guess is that they're basically trying to get some beta testers. I think this product is really designed for third world countries and maybe one day a lot later it will come to America once the market here is saturated for customers willing to pay more.
there was no deal to begin with. no where in the paper work did it say this bran new piece of tech and hardware, is being pushed out to give you a better deal. its strictly is an add on so only people that should take interest in it, i currently customers that tend to do alot of out dooring.
i like how they giving us all these options. instead of one, let alone one crappy options like regular satellite did to us for decades.
i bet they doing a higher price at least for now with low service cost, slower speeds and that data cap, as a deterrent from jackoffs that will end up abusing its purpose.
any boating, sea travel in general, this seems to be a great fit for. almost like its meant to be the residential version of the super costly, pure mobile plan and satellites

They will soon eliminate the 50 gb hard cap. They tried a similar trick when startlink first came out. 1 TB cap, but i don't think it was ever instituted. $599 for the mini, $30/ month is not bad but 50 gb cap is a deal breaker imho.
I received the invite and made the purchase. I have the residential service for my primary residence and having service at my camp for $30, even with the restriction, made sense to me. Aside from the hardware purchase $30 a month for my situation, part time use, is a good deal.

Wow...they have seriously missed the mark on mobile use. I was trying to cancel a shipment of the Gen 3 Standard dish that I ordered 3 days ago (got a shipping notification the next day-yesterday!). Being a new van lifer, I was interested in the mini for all the obvious reasons, but after the reports I'm seeing this morning/today, I'm glad the Gen 3 Standard dish is still on the way. I'll wait until the mini evolves into something that makes sense for the nomad lifestyle.
Gen3 is absolutely the best. Use the savage Utv setup for the ultimate in modularity

I got the invitation and immediately purchased it. I have a Gen 1 Starlink dish as well as a Gen 3 dish still in the box (for a rainy day or if the Gen 1 fails for any reason). Love Starlink and am happy to pay for SpaceX innovations to get us to Mars.

Data cap is a dealbreaker
I’m on Roam so don’t expect to get the invite. If I did, I would pay the $599 only if it was $30 for unlimited data.
I’m sure the data cap will be a deal breaker for a lot of people. 50GB isn’t much at all these days.

Bruh, in Colombia the starlink mini costs $195 and $35 a month, for me it’s a no brainer, don’t know why they charge so much in the US, when it’s the exact same product delivering the signal from the same satellites
That’s a game changer for many countries around the world. I’m sure that was their plan all along. I thought it was a portable dish mainly for travel and stuff, turns out Starlink wants to become a lot more affordable for home use outside of the US, where their subscriber base has been slower to grow. I’ll do an update next week!
@@StarlinkHardware I commented earlier before I saw your post. I definitely think a lot of people, especially current and prospective Starlink customers in developed countries like US are complaining, but that's such an entitled mentality.
I'm glad to see Starlink are seriously trying to create a product offering that could be practical and accessible in developing markets. Excited to see the uptake once it's fully rolled out - If I was a Telco exec in a developing economy, I'd be sweating at how Starlink is going to eat their customer base

I bought one as soon as I got the email . I am in Alaska and my wife and I have a remote cabin. I was "sold" on the $30 per month fee. For us this seems absolutely perfect for our needs and in the perfect time for us is now as we spend most of our time there in the summer.
This seems completely backwards to me. I have broadband at home, but I want a mini for the RV when we go on vacation. The form factor is perfect, and I love the PD power and built in router and lower bandwidth is not a problem. But the data cap is a buster. My wife streams and would bust through that 50gb in no time. I don’t even mind the premium equipment price.
Although i use starlink for primary internet, we travel from Kentucky to Florida to North Dakota quite often and this would be great for car rides. (We also do the RV thing but we often use T-Mobile for that and travel.
Ditto. We want a mini purely for when we’re away in the RV. We don’t need or want Starlink at home.
Do we know if the mini has the capability to act as a mesh router with the residential starlink dish and router? With the ability to be picked up and used on the go and then put back into your at home system as just a router again? Or is the mini purely a standalone device for on the go?

I got the invite. I've had dishy since the original beta program.The program works for me as I can keep my dishy at home and take this with me camping.
Excellent presentation. Thank you. Really need to see a review of how well the mini will work when out camping and traveling. We use the full size one out in the woods and at campgrounds and the mini needs to work somewhat as well as the larger model. If it is like "half" as good/fast, it wont be an option for us.
That’s what I am thinking. Rving on east coast usually we deal with a lot of trees so I would have to work as good as the GEN 3 which I have not ordered yet holding out for the mini I only get out maybe twice a month so try to justify spending 150 a month a lot Versus 30 month.
Musk is first and foremost a business man.
The price will only drop when the market dictates the price.
When he has the satellite capacity to take business from the towns and cities then we will see prices more in line with domestic broadband.
Outside the US we may see restrictions on Starlink to protect local businesses.
I got the mini invite yesterday. I'm going to buy it. I don't like the 50GB data cap, but I think it will change. Also, I'm not going to use it that much. I'm on the discounted standard residential plan, so $30 is not that bad. I like what starlink is doing with the sat based internet. I think it is important for everyone to have access to a good internet connection. I'm willing to pay the higher price for mini kit to support the expansion of global internet.

Got the email today and ordered the thing. Bought it for when we are at races and for the RV so we don’t have to hotspot from our phones. We arnt into gaming just streaming movies and usual internet stuff while at the track. I guess we’ll see how it works
I've had my Starlink residential basic package for about 3 months now, and every time I turn around the price is dropping, and no emails from Starlink with cheaper offers.
On occasion, it freezes, I have to unplug the router and plug it back in to reset it.
I totally agree,its test run and cash grab while its still costly, before production of scale,i see so many ppl very angry throwing words lol like 3 years ago ppl have nothing or 200ms expensive internet. I think 299$ would be price and plan would change too. Its crazy how greedy ppl become having good thing for cheap. They can do this bc competition almost not exist.
Depends on use case. Early adapter most often pay more.

Sounds like what Tesla is doing with the Cybertruck Foundation Series… While I understand some customers can afford this, I don’t think it’s a good idea to reward and normalize this “cash-grab” behavior. Nobody wants these super expensive/restrictive options all so the company can make more money. Neither Tesla NOR SpaceX is at risk of failure - this is STARTUP BEHAVIOR!
Problem with not doing the "cash grab" is that people would abuse the cheaper price and flip it because of the small numbers that would be available. If you don't price your product appropriately for the demand there's a lot of negative things that happen as far as customer experience.
Ok, help me out here... If I were to put one on the back of my motorcycle -- I attach the power to my bike via usb-c. I travel to remote South America on my motorcycle... Do I have Internet through the built in router wherever I travel - everything is built into the antenna? Also, assuming I use T-Mobile wifi calling for my cellular. -- can I use this same router to allow me to use my cell phone anywhere there is no cell signal? I feel like I have this wrong...

I got the invite last night and got it. I have a dormant gen 2 for my RV and the cost of 150 to turn it on every trip will cover the extra 30 per month. I will have to see if the 50gb per month cap will be a problem or not. Going to run it for a few weeks and see what it looks like.

Internet for the (rich) people. So far the entire company reeks of an entire building full of MBAs strategizing complicated ways and add on fees to best extract every last penny from the customers they can.

I got this as add on to current base system for RV travel. I am fine with 30 a month extra for one or two weekends a month or one week a month for my RV travel. Plus on the months I don't travel 30 is reasonable. If I over do it for a week and have to pay 60 or 80 that month, that's okay as it goes back to 30 when I don't travel as much. All in all it averages out and is a good deal. Before this I used Verizon or Tmoble home (for my RV) and it cost 60 to 80 a month (every month). Yes it has unlimited data but on the average I don't need that. Maybe if I was a full time RV person then that would be a deal breaker, but for 10 trips a year, mostly once a month for a week end it works great. Not to mention better coverage and speed than T-Mobile or Verizon home.
Once the cost drops on the mini sounds like a good thing to me. Mobile internet using Starlink.
I just got the invite and bit the bullet of $663 for the mini. My wife hates me up on the ladder so it makes sense to have a portable for our trailer, isolated cabin or side by side adventures. There is a 30 day trial so lets see. I can say that my Verizon data doesn’t work on big weekends with everyone on line so good to have a back up. Time will tell…

USD$599 for the outdoors sort of person who have $500 hiking boots and $300 backpacks, like the Cybertruck it's a luxury item, surprised it wasn't released a few weeks ago so people have time to show it off for 4th July. it also equates to ~USD$800 and $50 a month in Australia.
If you live on The Reservation, ( Tuba City AZ) you have plenty of space and do not need a mini dish.

The military uses of this are insanely obvious. But I'm glad it's going out. I know $600, and $30/mo sounds like a lot, but the garmin inreach mini 2 is $370 now, and the setup for an annual renewal is $20, and the max plan is at $50/month, up front. So $990 for the first year. That's very close to the $960 of the Starlink Mini. The biggest differences are that the Starlink is much heavier, doesn't work on the move, as you said, and draws a lot of power, but is obviously an insane amount more data. In my opinion this will be perfect for groups. You could turn it on for 30 minutes at lunch on a hike and let everone in your group communicate. So that actually brings the cost down because everyone gets private conversations. The killer app for hikers is actually weather, you can get high resolution animated weather from noaa or phone apps. I can see this eliminating satphone too. Video calls. Amazing. Not a killer app, but amazing. But that high quality weather will actually save lives. Weather kills hikers every year, in the usa.
just a comment on the continetal room, i try to use in the regional romm plan ( i purchase antena purchase on Mexico). on uruguay and i does not work. i have to upgrade the service to global to make it work. looks like for starlink American continent is two diferent ones.

This should be the way. Otherwise many people will stop buying Gen-3 dish hardware and causes inventory build-up with no sale. This invitation only pricing will prevent such thing like Adam Osborne did in the 1980s when he announced Osborne 2 that causes his bankcrupt.
I didn't knew this was so expensive in the US. I'm in latam looking to get a starlink to connect when I'm in my cabin and I've been checking at info for all of this because I don't plan to use it all year long so the cheaper the better imo and I've been seen local ads for the starlink mini and it says here 200$ for the dish and 35$ for the monthly plan and then I see how insane is the cost overthere.
The only way I would buy that is if it used the same subscription data as the standard dish and cost for the mini addon was $200. Might be worth it for backpacking but there is no other use case if your battery capacity is big enough and you have multiple charging solutions. Better to invest that money in this.
I’m excited to eventually get one. It will replace my back-up LTE hotspot from Project Genesis (Dish). I won’t be paying the full price though. I’ll wait until we see the promised $250-ish price.
As for the plan. I think a more interesting plan to me would be a deprioritized or maybe speed capped unlimited plan (like 25mbps) for the same $30 as opposed to the 50 gigs at a hard cap. This 50 gig plan would still work for my uses truth be told though.
I only truly need the unlimited data at my main Starlink’s address (our lake cabin) which isn’t changing from this.

The $599 is not the issue. its the 50Gb data cap and $1/Gb in excess. In addition $30 add on to standard subscription, The WIFI is of lower speed than Gen 3, you cannot you it wile moving or in body of water. You cannot use it outside the US and You cannot pause the subscription. Too much limitation for its price.

Nothing in the specs or support section of Starlink.com indicate data will roll over. On their other data capped plans, data does not roll over.
Great research as always. I'm totally confused why someone would pay extra to be in a beta test though.
Keep in mind the 50gb limit could change....but you could also just get tmobile 5g plan for 110.... that will give you 200gb. If you want unlimited then its like 150 I think. So I don't know who this is for? Why would anyone buy starlink if 5g is good for most cases? Unless it really just is for extremely remote areas. I don't understand this plan.
To me, paying $110 or $150 is crazy for TMo unless you're not covered well by Verizon towers, or are covered especially well by TMo. Visible by Verizon has unlimited data, unlimited hotspot for $25. Everywhere but at my business in a city during weekday business hours, it works well enough for me. At my business, I have a second Visible line on their $45 plan (which I got a $35 forever deal on) where the first 50GB is priority data, so that it actually works OK as my hotspot to my laptop at my business on workdays. Anytime the $25 plan is getting OK speeds, I hotspot from that phone instead, to save the $45 plan for when the $25 plan gets slow.
Once you have a phone or two with unlimited data and hotspot, plus some priority hotspot, then the $30 for 50GB plan for Starlink Mini can make sense for many people to use only when out of cell range. Not everyone, some people are just data hogs who need to consider the 50GB a hard cap, or go bankrupt at $1/GB. But for someone who might only occasionally go over it a little bit, plus still always have more data available at $1/GB in emergencies, I think calling it a hard cap is wrong.

The explanation for why it's $599 is pretty weak. Normally when you get early access to a product in order to be effectively a beta tester, you get it at a reduced price. Stings a little bit to have been paying $90-120/mo since the "Better Than Nothing Beta" in Nov 2020 just to get the privilege of paying more for something...

I think there is confusion between running a for profit business and charity. Starlink does not have the available bandwidth width, to add millions of subscribers, @$30 per month. Not to mention they would be cutting their $150 subscriber’s revenues, as people switched to the less expensive plan. They are providing mobile, capped internet @50gigs per month service. Ultimately the costs will come down, plans will separate and data caps will go away and be replaced by throttling.
They can keep it at the current pricing.
I’d buy one- 50Gb per month is enough for me, but the monthly fee MUST be affordable.

In my country I’m paying $65 for 100GB that only goes 5mbps. Starlink would literally change my life right now. I don’t care how much it costs I just want fast internet to run my Web design business.
Its a game changer. Im using it near the coast where it otherwise is impossible to get any good speed via mobile operators.
I have up to 10 devices with everybody streaming videos, working against offices, playing games all the time and never does it fail. Upload might be lower (around 10% of download) but never noticed any issues.
The app shows 2-3 disruptions occurring every hour but if you don't run server sending data frequently you will not notice anything.
Just remember to setup properly in beginning. Then you will reach the speeds up to 300mbs frequently. My average speed is 150mbs. Bottom low is 40mbs which might occur for 10 mins in a single day.
If having need for internet at places where its hard to get good internet otherwise - Starlink is the way.

I currently have the high performance antenna mounted on my RV. I've had it for about a year now and it has performed will.
The major drawback is its high power consumption. I do have about 1000 watts of solar and 750 amp hours of lithium batteries. Normally it's only in the dead of winter where the sun angle is low and days are short that I put a strain on my system. So my idea is to purchase the mini dish (which will save me about 100 watts of energy ) and use it only when I'm boondocking and use the high speed dish when I am at my residence and plugged into shore power. So the question I have right now is will Starlink allow me to put the mini dish on my current plan which obviously has roaming already? Just have to wait and see when they open up to a wider audience.
Starlink has been a game changer for us RVers. Having high speed Internet wherever I travel is great!
Right now, no, Starlink is only allowing the Mini to be added to Residential. I’m willing to bet you can use it on any plan once it is publicly released. So you should be able to carry out your plan eventually, just not during this invite period if you currently are on Roam/Mobile.
Like you I have a roam plan on a Starlink permanently mounted on the rv. I would like the reduced power consumption and not worried about half the bandwidth. I think most here have totally misunderstood the current plan offering. It’s a 30 dollar add on to get 50 gb portable on a fixed plan. It’s not a stand alone plan. This is likely appealing to a select group and since hardware isn’t abundant it makes sense for an early start of deployment. I’m sure when production has ramped up the mini will be available on stand alone plans. I’m equally. Sure there will be endless whining about the price when it happens.
We have Starlink on the rv now. It’s changed our lives. I can take my office to the backwoods where there is no cellular coverage. Yup gotta pay to play and I’m ok with that

The hard data cap is a big miss. This can’t be a backup internet option as Elon alluded to with a 50gb hard cap. Most use cases for this service will be eliminated if they don’t change this. Love Starlink and the innovation they bring, but a ball has been dropped here.

Expect the cost and fees to decrease over time and or service limits increased. If it sucks, just wait. It's an Elon thing. Early adopters pay for the development.

can we use roaming with the starlink mini?
The Mini with the Mini Roam plan add-on can be used to travel within the US. However, the Mini can't be purchased on the regular Roam plan at this time. Only the 50GB data capped Mini Roam plan, that is added on to an existing Residential subscription.
