That's about 12 megabytes a second. :)
That was download, but what were the upload rates?
I have a brand new Rhino Rack Back Bone system with the rack still in the box that I bought off of Trail Recons Site for my Gladiator. I can't use it because of the rack on my shell. I'd be willing to let it go pretty cheap. I'm in South East Arizona
Great video. I just ordered the Mini and can't wait to try it
How can you buy thiss!! This will be soo useful in the islands plz ?where can you buy this?.
We’ve carried our Starlink all the way to Argentina in our Jeep. In North America we paid one price… then it jumped up to $200/month as soon as we turned it on in Colombia. A month or so ago they notified me that the price was going to jump to $400/month. Which is ridiculous, but I assume that’s just to push me over to the $250 plan that’s capped at 50GB… so $50 more for much less data (in countries where I can buy 25-30GB of cell data for around $10). 🤷🏻♂️ It’s nice to have, even though it takes up a lot of room, but for me it’s not worth it.
yeah, the prices are getting stupid. It was designed to get internet access for 'anyone' around the world yet its so expensive?
In my country unlimited data, calls and text for the whole month is $15. Also, you can buy $0.5 one day unlimited data, calls, and text $1 is for 2 days. $5 for a week.
WEIRD its almost like the scam needs to pay for itself
@everythingpony it's the cellular. Everywhere you go in my country, you won't lose the connection.
@@everythingponyI don't know how it works now, but I know they used to charge extra for if you wanted your antenna to work on the go, or anywhere other than a fixed location.
I’ve got Starlink at work for my mobile office. You need to set that up somewhere out in the open (not right next to your jeep blocking half the satellites, maybe on top). It connects to satellites from all angles not just straight ahead. You will have better upload speeds and videos will upload faster. 😅
He literally said in the video that he plans to mount it on top of the jeep😐
@@ColinHD Yet he was timing it in a daft location, literally.
So where are you located? You make it seem like you can just buy the mini and set up and go. If you are in the US, until it’s changed, you need to already have StarLink residential in order to even buy the mini and then you are data capped to 50 GB and the service can’t be paused so for someone who doesn’t know anything about the mini this video is misleading. Also do an advanced speed test so we can see the actual speed from the device to the satellites.
Key point! This would be an amazing solution for overlanders, vanlife, etc. but the current subs are prohibitive.
From what I understand, this is how they are handling the early phase of this product rollout. They are capping it as they increase production. This is also a product they are targeting for developing countries as a low cost alternative. The greater freedom for who can buy it will come as they increase the saturation of satellites for the density of the US customers. They already are having saturation issues in certain areas that limit speeds, which is why residential is marketed as non-mobile so they can track saturation.
Wonder if this just uses their cellular spectrum?
Would probably work a lot better on top of the jeep
You don't need residential to get it.
05:30 Mbps means megabits per second, and MBps means megabytes per second.
To convert MBps to Mbps, you multiply by 8, so 1 MBps equals 8Mbps. He was getting 130 MegaBITS per second which equals 16 Mega BYTES per second download and 1.25 upload.
I have Starlink for my business and never looked back...fantastic speeds, never dropped out..recommend for all...!
do you live in a place where it never storms or has trees?
@@kaeleib Yes...i live in the UK..so it stormy quite often and theres plenty of trees...
@@4hotographix then how have it never dropped out due to weather?
@@kaeleibweather like storms and rain isn’t meant to actually impact the connection, although it likely does in some cases
Good news as I'm waiting for Starlink to be available in my country. But, it being too popular and monopolizing ISP industry won't be good no matter how good the service is. Hope more and more companies come up with this infrastructure.
What would be your total costs monthly? Including the device, plans, and what happens at data cap?
Go to their website.
I have Gen2 and worked remotely for 3.5 months on it. IT WAS AMAZING. This new one is great to simplify the whole process.
My Starlink Gen 2 has been a game changer up at my cabin in the middle of nowhere. Dreamt about having a mini 2 years ago when it was only rumored.
StarLink rocks - extremely cool
Great video, as Desert Charley I think I'm going to get one. (Production note... please limit your swaying left right selfie views because I had to look away for motion sickness... gah) Looking forward to more of your adventures.
DOA unless they fix their dumb plan.
The 50GB limit before throttling starts is a deal killer for me.
Would you be using it as your only means of wifi access?
How much do you need for a few days of camping?
Internet should be unlimited for individuals
@@vitaminb4869 A few days of camping? I am a fulltime filmaker and work remotely.
Where did you hear that
Can you bring it with you internationally?
What battery do you recommend for plugging the mini into?
A whole video about the Jeep setup. Yes please
Yeah please, I want to know about that rooftop tent
I was just looking on his channel for that exact video. Yes, please!
yes please❤
forget starlink.... I want that jeep!! PS.... Starlink is amazing. I use it in my RV while in the Maine woods.
It's time for cellphone companies to partner with Elon to incorporate GSM repeater functionalities into these devices. Then they will be in big business.
Should be noted, you are getting mega BITS per second. At around 5:20 you say mega BYTES. There is a pretty big difference, but doesn't diminish the service, since we always measure in megaBITS.
Haha, he wish he got that many megabytes. Nonetheless, it's still faster than my home internet, which is already plenty fast. You really don't need 130 mbps down.
He corrected himself on the pinned comment
@@vitaminb4869 dunno. For a single connection I’d agree. For a home using many devices I’d say more is better.
Excellent video! Nice to have more overland content in your videos....please test in-motion performance, as you know this is not a Starlink-supported feature for the mini dish, but it works with a Gen3 dish even with a residential plan, so it will work with the mini dish. I have my Bronco Badlands ready to install a Gen 3 dish on the roof, but I will wait for the Mini performance to decide.
If you've never had Starlink, how did you get the invite to purchase one? Right now they are only offered to selected existing Starlink residential users as an add-on dish.
We didn’t need an invite we just went to the website and used the link. Hope this helps.
@@Cve979 I'm sorry but no that didn't help. It is not available for sale to new starlink customers in the US. Only in selected Latin American countries. It is in fact one of the major complaints of the new dish. If you have a link where this happens, can you provide it? Because this is contrary to literally every other person's experience wanting to get Starlink Mini in the US.
as a person who travels in remote aus and soemtimes on a motorbike this is a game changer
i do have a main starlink that i have taken in my ute
but this is truly perfect for portable outback internet
Do we know if we have to pay another plan for the Mini? or can I stop the connection at the house and use it on the Mini. Currently I just take the dish off my roof but this would be great for when I go camping
It's an additional $30 a month on top of what you already pay for home Starlink.@lachlan.mooney
@@lachlan.mooney That's the exact same question that I was thinking. Would really love to know the answer.
@@lachlan.mooneymust be linked to a current residential starlink account at the current moment $30 added
Isn’t that Mega bits and not bites?
Yes
Bytes
This is really good and only option out in wild.. though how does this perform when you are moving, does it disconnect? Also what power bank can power this in hiking? Because 45-60W is quite a Power... keep it up😊
Overstating is rough. From the vid - 120Mbps down - 7Mbps up.
Nice set up in the Jeep mate, greetings from an Australian off-roader
Great vid! It's good to know these things work like they're advertised, especially in remote areas.
Alaska, here I come!
MORE PLEASE .. Just asking for a friend 🤣
Great video! Curios to know if this mini would work at a second home - where we want constant internet (to monitor temps, video cameras, etc) AND have enough power to stream video TV, normal internet surfing, etc. when we are at the home. Does this internal WIFI have the power to get through exterior walls of the home and interior walls between rooms?
Well, best bet is to mount a starlink on your roof, and then, route an ethernet cable inside the building which connects to a router with better antennas?
I guess something to save for 🙂
I like the small form factor, great for my van.... but not sure if I would take it on a multi day backpacking trip... sometimes is is nice to be offline.
Cheers from LA
I would need this for going live on tiktok from the boat and from remote fishing locations too. I will wait to see for sure if it will work for my purposes though.
I would only use it if I need it for work. Otherwise one of the best parts of going camping is you're disconnecting from internet and social media. It's such a nice break to have.
Rotate used to eman soemthign different when I was in the barmy army - I am guessing yhey work best with Landorover Defenders or Discoverys (pre-2000). :-|
That’s one hell of a creator cameo.
😜
I'm thinking Starlink HAT!!!
Made of aluminum foil in the shape of a pyramid?
@@cloudrippr If it's stamped with secret symbols from the Mason, Knights Templar, and Aliens, I'M IN!
That is so nice. Prepping for a 2 year overlanding/dispersed camping trip out west: New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.
Although, it doesn't look like this will be available for anyone in the US for a while. Hopefully by March 2025--that's when all my fun begins. Subscribed. Looks like you have great content I can use. thanks.
This thing needs be available to everyone at half the price and have a cheaper monthly plan or even better a daily plan.
Obviously one would expect it to work in the kind of WIDE OPEN spaces you used for testing. The big question for me is how does it work with varying degrees of limited views of the sky. Very little info on YT that I can find which shows that kind of test.
I tried it in a small clearing surrounded by tall trees and it worked well. One needs about a 100 degree cone of open sky.
So what if I use it at sea sometimes? I use now the Explorer 510 from Inmarsat on sea and land. Also in the disclaimer is stated it is not for use on sea. It works fine. How about the Starlink mini?
Thanks
Really like the Wrangler. Which model, trim, and year? Also, what is the name of the back setup? Newbie here, thanks!
I m planning to buy a starlink for traveling to Colombia but could not find any customer service where i could have q better u understand of how to use it . I some many questions buy dont know where to ask?
This is quite amazing...so won't the satellite dish thing is purchased, is there a subscription fee to use Starlink? Thanks. Love your Jeep homebase set up!
Yes, you need a subscription. In fact, I think the mini is currently only an add-on to existing plans. Hope that changes soon.
As Elon's quote goes: the best part is no part. Seems they followed that mantra. Super simple setup, can be plugged in anywhere and it just works. Mark my words that 5 years down the road SpaceX will be the largest data carrier and direct to cell will be the norm. What an awesome system.
60 watts is alot really...60 is snow melt i believe. It's supposed to draw about 25?
Fun video! Would definitely like to see more about your jeep setup as I am running a very similar rig and aspire to occasionally use it as a mobile office... to get out of the house or work days. It looked like you were using some sort of director's chair to be able to sit and use the rear platform of the alucab? Would like to know more about that!
Can you see if there’s a way to power this over USB-C?
Good question!
The power adapter puts out 30v. 20v is the maximum voltage for the current rev of USB -C
Faster speed than my T-Mobile internet that’s often at 40mbps or non functioning
Those speeds are comparable with Australia's FIBRE National Broadband Network. This is embarrassing for Australia.
Nicely done. (My full comment is gone, I suspect that RUclips killed it. Not sure why. I posted a link to the forest service website that lists road closures 🤷🏼♂)
Did you run additional tests for upload? As you tested?
Weird question, what kind of outdoor shorts are you wearing in the video?
Cool video. Thank you!
I would like to know if the Starlink mini works well during storms
It's good anuff for Ukraine they been using it for last years testing real Field test
Outta the box in the jungle of Brazil works
Can you pull it into a laptop with an Ethernet cable or it is WiFi only?
So did you have to reposition the antenna once you changed location?
Awesome! I have a Gen 2 on the House - It's mobile but much larger. Good to see a smaller version!
Great video! Starlink is a game changer for remote working. We don't have the mini yet in the UK, but I have just flat mounted the Gen 3 to my campervan/rv with the Trio FlatMount - video on my channel for the install, speeds etc. Currently using the EcoFlow Delta 2 to power it.
If you never had Starlink, how did you get the mini-dish
It’s advertised as available only to those with an existing residential account.
As an influencer, is Starlink giving you the hardware for free for a favorable review?
I’m not a Starlink hater, I have a dish on my home and getting the mini tomorrow.
Just want to know the angle.
Nice! When is this going out to the public in general?
Can`t wait!!
out now!
Bring that video you talked about, the jeep.
How did you get the Mini without a regular Starlink account? (Friend / Grey Market). I just checked the Starlink site and I still don't see the option for the Mini. I've been waiting a year for it to come out and be available?
what the monthly cost for the mini service
too bad they don't have backup plan, where you pay like 100 bucks for 100GB and can use it for a year or so. Reason for this is that what if you want to use their internet only when you go to the woods or visit grandma or something. Because paying for home internet and starlinik at the same time looks dumb.
What power supply does it need? Is it usb-a?
The starlink nano is going to be even smaller. It has a built-in battery pack and is the size of a thick iPhone. It won't be released until all of the starlink V2 constellations are up. The larger variants that are going to be launched on super heavy.
Would like to see how the setup is with trees, mountains, or canyons. I think I want to get one for my popup camper
I live in San Clemente, recognized these spot real quick haha
Not "mega bytes per second", is "mega bits per second", one byte equals 8 bits. Data speed is measured in bits in 99% of various cases. (Only the hard drive transfer rate uses bytes.)
I think Starlink is the most impressive feat of technology in my lifetime. I'm an 80's kid so I'm including everything from the world wide web to generative AI in that.
You can have wifi anywhere. Just get an AP or a router with WiFi. Having internet connection anywhere is a completely different ball game.
Splitting hairs. When most people say wifi, they mean connected wifi, otherwise it's useless.
Can you bring and use this thing on an airplane? Lol
Cheers man, seems simple enough and it’s good to see you doing what you really enjoy doing 😊❤ Just don’t forget your wife 😂😜🤪😂❤️
1. Do you have to reorient the position all the time?
2. If you buy a normal (non-mini) starlink setup you then also have to buy a separate router? How much does that ad to it?
You could also mount a standard Starlink antenna to the roof of your truck, that way you can have internet while driving. I don't think the mini supports a mobile connection.
Does anyone have an idea for how one could power this while backpacking? I work from home and would love to send email from on top of a mountain, but don't think my solar panel could power this. Any thoughts?
Hi Jeven, where can the mini be purchased. Or is it not out yet? Thanks Dave...
21 ms latency is crazy, i thought it would be over 100ms, so gaming is definitely viable on starlink
Nice, thanks for this!
Test it backpacking middle of no where how will you power it
If you don't have cell service in the first place, how can you open the starlink apps and set it up for the first time? I guess the apps should connect to starlink website to do its thing
I have the RV version but the mini would be a game changer. There are many times I can’t bring the RV version because it is too bulky.
Great video. Thanks for all the detail. I would love to see more in the mini. Your video was one that I relied on to make my own Starlink mini purchase. Thanks
Do you need Internet to first set up. Let’s say I go somewhere remote open the box and I want to pay and start it with no Internet is that fine ?
Or do I need internet for first ever activation ?
Cool video. The speed shown in the UI is in Mbps not MBps. Bits not bytes. So speed is 1/8 in megabytes :)
Will you buy a cyber truck? 🚛
Would love to see how it goes with a DC power supply. Also see how portable it is for your hiking 👍 I think I already want one
How much do you have to pay per month? And I wonder if you can take it travel abroad world-wide?
I've been using Starlink's "standard" roam kit for camping. It's kind of a pain to setup with the large power supply, separate wifi box, and then the large antenna. I'm actually selling it now and going to buy the mini. So much more convenient. Since this is just for camping 50GB limit is not a problem for me.
Look up starmount systems, you will like it
You still need a residential starlink account unfortunately to link it too
@@rogermckinnon5738 That is no longer true. It was a requirement at first, but it has since been removed.
I’ve a small camper and when it’s hot I am seeking shade. I’m thinking the antennae is best left moveable so that I can place it with open sky.
Very disappointing. You only did half a video. We need to know how much it cost how to get it all these kinds of things.
For correctness, I am pretty sure that 130 Mbps was 130 Mega Bits and not Bytes per second.
I know this is a Starlink video, but that looks like a wicked Jeep! Sort of thing I would like to have in the future.
How did you have starlink mini by itself? I thought you need another starlink satellite to be able to buy the mini
Nope.
😅How is the reception under lots of trees?
60 watts is still a lot of power. It’s more than what a laptop consumes, unless you have a gaming system.
Awesome unboxing vid, Jeven. Just a quick one : can I use it in China where free internet is banned?
I just got my Starlink Mini. I'm able to get 177 mbps from my backyard which usually never have cell signal. Amazing tech. Also, very low power consumption. LOVE IT!!!
I think it might be even more power efficient when connected via usb-c instead of via AC plug
It’s the same
Def would like to see a video on mounting the Mini to your jeep, and what mounting products are market available right now for the Mini
