The recording was made at St John the Evangelist Church in Islington, London and features on VOCES8's 15th Anniversary album, 'After Silence' (www.voces8.com/aftersilence).
Text:
Words: Martin Jahn (c.1620-82)
Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
Darum laß ich Jesum nicht
Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.
Translation:
Jesus remains my joy,
My heart’s comfort and sap.
Jesus obviates all misfortune,
He is my life’s strength,
My eye’s delight and sun,
My soul’s treasure and bliss;
Therefore I will not let Jesus go
From my heart and sight. -
Legend has it, the oboist has still not yet run out of breath...
😂
A brilliant demonstration of circular breathing. I learned how to do it on tuba cause sometimes they just don't give enough time to breathe. Plus it's a fun party trick.
Yeah, he’s amazing.
lol
I could never learn circular breathing. Wish I could 'cause as I age, I must take in gulps every four bars. My grandfather could do this - he learned glass blowing. I was greatly envious.
Oboist Nick Deutsch…..what a legend.
In a thousand years, our descendants living in some far off galaxy will be listening to the music of Bach with the same awe as we do today, two hundred years after the music was composed.
Unfortunately, a far off galaxy will take civilization way more than a thousand years to travel there
200 years ke ???? 🤨
This music was written by God. He chose Bach to deliver it...
Indeed!!!!!! MARANATHA.
2024 and the Oboist is still playing lol 🎉wonderful heavenly music love Jesus and Bach my favourite composer and love voices 8
I will never understand how or why the music of Bach can be so deeply comforting.
There is nothing he can be compared with; maybe Heinrich Schütz?
The translated text of this piece may help you understand. I believe Bach's faith affected his music.
Jesus remains my joy,
My heart’s comfort and sap.
Jesus obviates all misfortune,
He is my life’s strength,
My eye’s delight and sun,
My soul’s treasure and bliss;
Therefore I will not let Jesus go
From my heart and sight.
Because it is devout prayer.
One oboist, one organist, and eight angelic voices. Make for one stunning version of J.S. Bach's masterpiece. My eyes tear-up every single time.
an oboist that DIDNT breathe!
Same here.💓
...And audiovisual techs!
😂😂
Indeed, this is exactly what I had in mind before I read your comment. A bright idea of VOCE8.
I've always felt this is the most perfect piece of music ever written. Once it starts, there is no logical place for it to go except to the next note, all the way to the end.
Yes, I've noticed that. A digression free moment of musical genius. Usually slaughtered at weddings by over enthusiastic church choirs.
I totale agree with you John. I guess, Bach would appreciate this incredible performance.
Philip, I see your Point, but don‘t forget that music is for everyone, not only for the priviledged.
I wouldn‘t blame a nurse or a teacher for not having received an early and professional choir education and still being touched by Bach.
In terms of music theory there are countless logical places where it could go. It just seems such a force to you cause you are used to this melody line probably since your early childhood. But it's by far not the only way this melody could have been constructed.
stefanie3831 Bach didn’t write the melody, but I think his setting is almost perfect
I love it so much. I had the version sang by Andreas Scholl playing on my Dads funeral.
All Praise, Honor and Glory be to Jesus Christ, my Savior, my Lord, my God, forever, Amen
God hates Bootlickers!

Johann Sebastian Bach wanted to honor God and please people with his music.
He succeeded in this and after so many centuries the music touches our hearts.
To God's glory!
Very well said Angeli! 😊
Many of us do not believe in God, but still we can feel the magnificence of Bach’s music.
@@rtoralgaWhich don’t change Bach‘s intentions. Wonderful piece of music.
One of the absolute most beautiful compositions ever written. Beautifully performed. It seemed like the Oboe player played the entire piece on one breath. Kudos.
He is absolutely amazing
Circular breathing?
Spectacular breath control from Oboist.
Australian oboist Nick Deutsch.
Broooo that was literally my first impression of the video
Does he breath?? Unbeleavable Show
Magnífic , gràcies.
super 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🎉🎉🎉🎉
The oboist has incredible breath control and Voce8 beautiful.
Another massive thank you x
He is using cyclical breathing. Quite incredible, only seen one or two oboists who can do it.
@@JayR-uy8gl , every professional oboe player I have worked with can circular breath quite well.....they are so often called upon to do it, they regard it as a necessary skill. A couple of them told me that when they first learned to do it, their teachers had them smoke a joint first to reduce the natural inhibition that the body can have to controlling the airway in that manner; once they got the knack, the joint was no longer necessary.....
@@youtuuba that last bit is BS and makes me doubt the rest of your comment. I learned to circular breathe playing tuba, mostly as a party trick.
There is no special breathing technique. You just fill your mouth with air, use your tongue to block off your throat, and breathe in very sharp and quick through your nose, while you use your tongue and cheek muscles to compress the air in your mouth. Then unblock your throat from your mouth and continue to play as normal till you need another short breath.
Describing it was harder than actually doing it. It feels very natural when you do it, and only works on instruments that don't require a ton of airflow. EG: It's probably possible to do on a flute, but it would be way harder.
I guess a joint might help people relax and stop thinking so hard about it because it isn't as difficult as the general media makes it out to be.
@@kronik907 Really? If it's "merely a party trick," you need to tell, among others, Roland Kirk that and innumerable Hindu players that the they are just kidding.
@@JayR-uy8gl I was just wondering if that was the technique he's using - talk about mastering your instrument, it's beautiful
Others have similiarly commented, but here it is again: The oboist is marvelous. BRAVO, Nick Deutsch!!
I can't say it enough: all glory belongs to our King and saviour Jesus Christ 🙏
No, it's SDG.
Absolutely stunning performance! The circular breathing of the oboist is impressive! He played continuously the oboe for 2 minutes and 3 seconds. From 1:08 to 3:11.
ItalanFindart is it impressive or kind of boring? Not sure
I think there is a pause at 02:00, but it is still mind boggling
@@TheEvanco impressive because circular breathing is quite hard and our lungs only carry adequate amount of air for like 20 - 40 seconds of breath
I wondered about that. (Whether he was using circular breathing or not.) As a trombone player, I use circular breathing mostly to extend a phrase or a long note. I've heard jazz reed players use the technique, but not classical. Very musically effective in this piece. I find it impossible to use circular breathing on a moving line, with a good result, so I found this performance to be particularly impressive.
@@steveruzich3273 recorder players use it. Professional ones, that is!
Jesu bleibt meine Freude, danke
When I get to Heaven I am going to learn how to play and sing like this even if it takes me ten thousand years!!!!
This comforing feeling is like slumbering on the chest of my late beloved mother when I was infant

This is one of the most beautiful songs in the world! One day when my life comes to an end, I will finally see Jesus' joy of men! 💕🥺

By definition it's not a song but I get what you mean.

Love the woman in black !!!
This piece is a door open to eternity
How is it possible that there are people who don't like this?
Trolls.
They are probably Schoenberg fan boys.
Simple, no souls!
The same way it was possible that people crucified Christ.
Idiots who ear reggaeton.
And in the midst of COVID...love this performance so much.
Exquisite. Wolfgang Meisner is correct. This is the high point of the human mind, of the civilisation we offer.
Greetings from South Africa. I keep coming back to this exquisite performance. Beautiful voices and piano accompaniment .The Oboe player equally belts it with impeccable breathing technique. Just tearing....❤
Warm greetings to south africa from germany.. Jesus remains our joy.
Quite apart from the beautiful singing, the unending line of that beautiful oboe is an absolute triumph xox
It is called "continuous breathing" in wind instrument performers👍🏽
@@ArcoirisRaimbow Amazing tho
When I hear this title, I can hear the voice of Jesus👍😊 So Thank's a lot🙏
I love the way the organist is doing his own bit of directing. 1:36
Unglaublich schön. Vielen Dank für Eure Musik. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland
loose translation: Unbelievably beautiful. Many thanks for your music. Many greetings von Germany.
Traumhaft schön
That oboist!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
No words can transport these deep emotions.Only Bach and a marvellous Performance can do

idyllic... idilliaco!!!!!😍
best song for Oboe. for sure
If you're feeling down, having a hard time, and about to give up just listen to these songs and read every lyric and reflect and feel Jesus in your heart....
I could not agree more, "just listen to these songs", this music, classical music in general has brought me to a place I never would have imagined, it has opened my eyes to a glory, a feeling deep inside, I have realized it has always been there, you just need to accept it.
As a proud Aussie it's great to see a fantastic Australian oboist - with one of the worlds best choirs. Bravo!!
The first thing I noticed about this video was that most gorgeous oboe. Wow.
He's Australian? Good to know! Makes me proud too haha
But the pavlova is ours!
Check out Diana Doherty on RUclips. Try the wonderful performance of Bernhard Molique's Oboe Concertino in G Minor. Also Spirit of the Wild which was written for her, as well as a number of other compositions.
@@erichodge567 It's a Marigaux.
I fall in love with Andreas Haines every time I hear her voice !
Splendida esecuzione !
Why these singers perform this piece so incredibly well... is literally written on their faces... love and modesty. Probably THE essence that made it possible for Bach to write such divine music.
As many others already commented here... their German pronunciation is not only perfectly German - even for a German native speaker it is a truly beautiful pronunciation almost no German is able to speak.
Really asking myself where they have learnt it! :)
That the British have extremely talented musicians is a well known phenomenon.
Goosebumps, a bit wet eyes, smiles and the hair on my head stands upright. :))))))
Edit: after hearing it for the fourth time, I can confirm that they speak a more beautiful German than any native speaker.

excellent comment !!!!
I think that may also be said of many German speakers as they speak English. 😉🙏🏼
After just enjoying this recording for about 150th time, I had a stunning revelation. In my mind, in addition to the stunning choral voices, the terrific oboe and organ, there must have been an orchestra in behind them. No, it seems not, the two instruments and the glorious voices provided such a full experience, it seemed like there was so much more. I truly wish I could 'like' this 1000 times.
Only 150! you should be very young!
there is post-processing that adds that effect, whatever it is. recording is enjoyable, very detailed, but not live-sounding
c'est l'art de Bach, du pur génie
Lord loves the world!
Sometimes I wake up to the fact that German is my native language and I´m therefore privileged as a
Bach lover who does understand every single word - - -
See my comment above. I am native United States with a working knowledge of German. The German lyrics are such a beautiful prayer. Ich weiss dieses Lied nur auf Deutsch.
There are some pieces that just do not work as well if translated. Stille Nacht is another. Still trying to learn German.
@@jonathanwetherell3609 Bach always started from the lyrics and then composed the music like a perfectly tailored suit around the meaning/phrasing of the words, which is why translations don't work.
I feel exactly the opossite, as non german speaker, I feel this music is far beyond any word.
Exact same feeling I have about Shakespeare, as I am a native English speaker
Every man of good faith feels his soul rise to heights when he hears this beautiful and so profound music!
It's good to see singers wearing comfortable clothing and acting naturally....I really don't like seeing singers, musicians wearing ridiculous tight fitting restrictive formal evening wear to perform music. I've always thought it was just about the last thing one would want to wear to perform sublime music.
One organ, one oboe and eight beautiful voices. That’s all and it’s enough...
La plus belle des cantates de Bach ! Superbe!
So unglaublich schön.
! A Glória e honra a Ele eternamente. Amém.
This oboist plays divine🙏
Nick Deutsch, I just ran across this RUclips post while searching for something good to "sign me off" of the world wide web for the night. It was perfectly wonderful to stumble upon your performance! I'm happy to know that more than 1.5 million others have listened to this!
Beautiful music and singing! Jesus is my Lord and Shepherd; Hé is the Way, the Truth and (eternal) Life. HalleluYah !!!🙏🙏🙏
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for keeping this music alive.

One of my favourite pieces of music. I nearly start crying whenever I hear it.
Same here, this version is pretty spectacular.. My mom loved this piece, and I shed a tear over it every time I hear it. This is the best I have ever heard. 😂
This is the best performance of this I’ve ever heard! Fantastic! Bach would be thrilled.
It moves me and always will.
Thank you JSB for bring us to heaven.
These are professionals at the top of their game, just exquisite
This is the single most beautiful rendition of any piece of music I've heard in my entire life.
The oboist is out of this world, absolutely wonderful interpretation from all! Thank you so much for sharing!
This is Jesu, joy of man's desiring.
Just to be certain, I have listened to this tremendous, perfect performance at least 100 times now. Each and every time, a few tears are shed. I remain firmly convinced that this is the most perfect version I have ever enjoyed of what is, in my opinion, the best of Bach, which of course lies beside so much genius.
A perfect performance, indeed!!
Same reactions, same opinion
I totally agree, it's quite difficult to listen to other musics just after that. That is why i listen to it in loop
It is a beautiful performance as is that of the father of modern oboe playing, Leon Goosens. His tempo is slightly faster:
Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147: No. 10, Choral. "Jesus bleibet meine Freude"
ruclips.net/video/wNTJqoq20Wo/видео.html
You know, all I can say is "thank you."
Me too!
Bachs Worte sind wahr. Jesus liebt dich.
Perfection exists ! Here you can see and hear it !! Respect for all of you !!
This sounds too good to be true! The voices are amazing and the oboe is just perfection. The organist did a great job supporting whilst not overwhelming, and did a great job with the rallentando at the end with the oboe. I can't believe all that sound is coming from only 8 vocalists.
So beautiful. The longer I go without regular choral singing with my church choir, the more valuable these types of recordings become.
Very true indeed.
Again and again...I close my eyes listening it.
May God bless these amazing singers and, of course, the immense Johannes Sebastian Bach
Every time I feel I want some "light in the tunnel" I listen to this hymn - my daily life hymn.
