Gert my cancer is a terrible thing, but your music lifts my spirits you are a most wonderful musician. I hope I have many more years to listen and watch you play
Music is the best therapy ,,, hope you get well and enjoy life through the miracle that is music
Froggie24546 I which you the best in this year 2018

Just saw your post, I hope things are good for you!
Health and long life to you, Froggie24546
A purist’s worst nightmare of course, but Bach, listening from heaven, is smiling with joy at this thrilling improvisation!
Tränen der Freude und der Ergriffenheit. Wenn Musik das bewirkt, dann hier!
It is a real joy to watch and hear you playing - the music comes first - no histrionics, no flashy demonstration of technical virtuosity, no charging through at speeds faster than anyone else - just thoughtful, astonishingly mature musicianship. That is true virtuosity.
Just beautiful, Bach was a genius and this kid is a great organist.
One of the great improvisations ever, utterly transcendent.
Understatement!
At least I took the time to praise it, perhaps you can keep a positive outlook.

GROSSARTIG! Mehr kann ich dazu gar nicht kommentieren. Gert, Du bist ein begnadeter Organist und Musiker - thank you for your fantastic playing .....
To me this is proves God exists, that the musical gift is given to a choosen few, that Bach, Mozart and Vittoria are the mouthpiece of God and that we were created to to just be bathed in this sublime light that is Music. God Bless you Gert and keep that amazing talent alive for us all.
Beethoven? He could compose without his hearing
Not only is this proof of the supernatural but that surely it is in the form of the Nordic pantheon with Óðinn skáldfaðir at its peak. Surely any being that had gifted the world such gifts as music and poetry would spark origin stories of these gifts. Praise be Óðinn, the Æsir and the Vanir!
How do you think about nowadays composers like Zimmer, Williams, Barry.....Black Sabath or Madonna?
« D.ieu doit beaucoup à Bach » !
Op. cit.
@@Phynne85 no comparison.
Danke.
I imagine Bach hanging out in the clouds listening to this totally unimpressed like "meh, another copy of my masterpiece", but then becoming more and more curious with every minute and in the end just standing there speechless.
What you did there is really, really special!
It is so refreshing hearing an impro from my all time favorite piece created by someone of my generation! Keep on doing this kind of stuff :)
I'm looking at the comments, and no one's talking about his insane harmonic choices that make the second half sound so amazing. Let's talk about that
@Pablo Lopez-Ortega - you are so right. Most people (like me previously) listened to the first few minutes and thought "nice improvisation". But after seeing your comment, I thought I'd listen all the way through and it becomes staggering. It's as if he's turned a baroque standard into a romantic classic (a bit Widor-esque in parts). The guy is a genius!
@@NinoNiemanThe1st I've been wondering for a long time now why his career never seems to really take off. Who is his agent, anyone knows? Whoever it is, he/she seems totally incompetent. Gert should be travelling around the world's top venues, instead he keeps playing the Queen of Sheba at small churches. Sorry, I needed to take this off my chest.
I was pretty much Vince McMahon falling out of my chair in the last 30 seconds there.
@@JanPBtest I'm not sure about his career but he's perhaps not as well-known as he should be given pipe organ music is a fairly obscure corner of the arts these days. Nevertheless, people must listen to the whole of this clip (especially at 4:19 where he moves to an unexpected minor key), because his improvisation is masterful. Having said this, I'm sure if he went on tour widely, he'd have great audiences from those people who care about this stuff. It wouldn't matter if he was playing to only 50 people who cared, he'd engender immense respect!
@Panakeje That's fine, the music is great either way. I think if you do learn what's under the great sound, you can enjoy it more. It happened to me.
I love this organist's treatment of "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring." The tempo is just right, not too fast as many do it. His relaxed technique bespeaks thousands of hours of work to achieve mastery of the instrument. Or should I say king of instruments. The improvisation is brilliant, but never loses sight of the original theme's harmonic simplicity. I think J.S. would be mightily pleased to behold his composition still relevant in the modern age when performed by a young master.
Thank you for your generosity with you God given gift
I watched it again. This time I'm taken by the gentle elegance of his hands over the walking bass. I just can't get enough of this young prodigy.
Can u tell me how old this young man is? Thanks
@@DavidSmith-ki2we He was born in 1994
Prodigy and of another age he is
Same. I listen to him nearly every day.
I have never been so amazed by such graceful music! Bach would be proud to have heard this played if alive today! Gert, bless you for your performance. May you always bring smiles to everyone that has an ear to lend and listen to you play live or from RUclips!
iruben77 Thank you. That's very kind. :) have a good day!
Das tut der Seele gut
Old Bach is not dead he still lives in this young man!
Das sehe ich ganz genauso. I agree completely to this statement.
I couldn’t disagree more. Don’t forget, Bach composed the original. And I can’t say this performance was an improvement upon it.
DrjamesM May German music always bless the world
@@valsyoutube3331 i also much prefer the original Bach although Gert Is very talented as an organist.
Karen Noble: Agreed that he is extremely talented, but his cockiness and constant showboating ruins it for me. Just saying.
What an unbelievable improvisation of this beautiful organ work from a so talented guy ;)
I studied pipe organ from age 12 to 17 ... this is truly the most beautiful, and moving version I have ever heard ... thank you for sharing, Gary
Gert, how come you make me get tears in my eyes? I'm hardened by life, nothing else does...
My friend, I can relate to your feelings exactly. There is something about this young man and his emotional playing that I haven't experienced before, and I am not so young. You should listen to his playing on the Willis organ in Liverpool. The closing piece, Pomp and Circumstance will give you a lift, no matter what ever ails you.
Gary
Zo jong en reeds zulk een meester!
Gert... you play this piece with such grace and beauty!...Bach would only be so proud...what perfect music for the soul!!!..I love it!!...thank you for sharing your gift!..🙏❤
Gert's genius gives the appearance of effortless playing. Many brilliant romantic ideas woven into Bach's original - thank you for sharing this with us.
Danke.
toll gespielt,Danke schön
Danke!!! Mein Herz weint und ich bin erlöst
You have such an incredible talent and passion in playing a church organ Gert. I absolutely love this music and I'm really impressed by it. Your music fills my soul with immense pleasure, and raises my spirits no end.
You have inspired me to practice on the piano more now, as I haven't played on it for a long time. I doubt if I could play a church organ. Looks a bit too complex for me.
Thank you so much for this wonderful music by Bach 😀
The acoustics in these great European churches are unbelievable. My cousin played in a church in Bavaria- in January. He wore a winter jacket and could see his breath and the glass of water was frozen but nonetheless the 200 yr old organ played wonderfully.
It takes a consummate prodigy to pull off such an improvisation, sir! You are he!
Bach's masterpiece played by a prodigy. What a blessing to hear this on Good Friday. Soli Deo Gloria
Sehr berührendes Orgelspiel. Vielen Dank.
Stundenlanger Genuß, Balsam für die Seele.
Wonderful! Even Bach himself would be proud of this interpretation…
Thank you David!
Sehr gut gemacht Gert van Hoef. Man merkt, dass er sein Handwerk beherrscht. 🎵🎹👍🎶👍❤
The Greatest Organist I will have ever Known, here on RUclips and in Person. Golden Performance, Gert.
The special thing about Gert's improvisation is that it sounds very melodic. This is certainly true for a large number of visitors to his concerts.
What an amazing talent Gert has.Listening to him during the coronavirus lockdown has been an inestimable blessing.
amazing!
Wish I could be there.
Some day I just may hear you play live.
CDs are great with a good sound system,
but you do not feel the music or ambience.

Music for the soul.
I've never heard anyone go off into an improvisation on this time-honored and so well known choral prelude. It was an interesting departure and competently done. It's a new take on it which does a respectful job of giving us a new angle from which to view.
Breathtaking... The improvisation is unbelievable. Using the organ to the fullest...
i guess im randomly asking but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Quinton Andre Instablaster =)
@Darian Brandon thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out atm.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Darian Brandon it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you really help me out :D
@Quinton Andre no problem :D
I love this one..One of my favorite from Bach...He would be proud to watch a young prodigy like you playing to his works...Your brilliant music sooth my tired body n soul as I'm recovering from 2 hour surgery...Pain has been great but listening to masterpiece like this ease my mind..May you always achieve all the success ! You are an incredible musician!
Once again Gerts mastery of not only the organ but of the music shines through. He has taken one of the simplest of Bach's works and made it complex, and majestic. He ropes you in with his artistry and suddenly you find yourself wanting to shout in praise of his talent. Once again I thank Gert for sharing his music and his wonderful talent with the world.
Just discovered Gert's talent, the day after my 65th birthday. A belated present! My late father introduced my to the King of Instruments many years ago. he would have loved this. What a talent you have and thank you for sharing it with the world.
Hello Gert, I subscribed at a count of about 10,000 (finally) after enjoying your awesome talent, whether at church or in concert. You have the ability to make me emotional with joy when I hear you play (even at 72 years old!), and your gift must come from heaven -- for sure. I will join many to pray for your safety, wisdom, skill, and your playing of more beautiful pieces similar to this. Thank you!
Marvelous! He got anointed in the midst of this. Great adlib!
I find it amazing...looks like they have ripped you out of your bed, put you in front of the organ, you start to play and suddenly you get inspired and you just get it spot on.
What a magnificent improvisation!
Wow!!!!! Just Wow! What a Brilliant Improvisation!
Gert is the best organist i have had the pleasure of hearing since Virgil Fox oh so many years ago. This piece along with Ode to Joy and some others send chills down my spine. I try to listen to these two several times a week. I used to go to local organ concerts just to feel the power of the ‘king of instruments’ but discovered that I could get a better ‘concert’ just coming here and listening primarily to Gert and other great organists. I have followed Gert here seeing the wonderful progress made since he was yoing. Wish I had the same talent! May God continue to bless you in your work to glorify Him and never forget who you got that wonderful talemt from.
John, do you know his first version of Ode to Joy: ruclips.net/video/qLYQijY9aMI/видео.html
I love Gert too, I also have been following him for several years. I got a kick out of you saying you have followed him "since he was young". Of course, you realize he is now only 26.
I've listened to this many times...so beyond wonderful ...just stunning!!!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! ***** If i had more thumbs i would give more but BRAVO! TWO THUMBS up. Absolutely climactic, Superb tact with expression and stop control as well as outstanding control with the swells. The expressed power you pulled from that organ Made it sound Grand to its most highest threshold and even at Full Grand organ settings It sounded Colorful, as though it spoke in many tongues. You are amazing and Keep up the Excellent Work and continue our art.
Danke!
I have no words at all to describe the amazingness of this video! It is very nice when it starts quiet then builds up throughout the piece! I really loved the glances towards the camera and the trill with your feet near tge end of the piece, it really gave the piece character! Thank you Gert

Es klingt absolut genial! Best improvisation ever!
I know nothing about organ playing, but that is just fabulous
You're a true artist! com'on man... that was one of the most amazing things I have ever see... Loved your playing!
Gert, you are a pleasure to listen to.
You have big eyes:) and I thank you and all the other organ musicians for helping me with depression. How can I be sad when I see and hear such beauty?
I think Bach stands behind him, touches on his shoulder and whispers: "Well done, Gert."
Envoutant, fascinant

Gert listening to you is joy joy joy, your music uplifts the spirit. Your talent is amazing.
So noble and well-paced. I appreciate you not rushing this and the pedal is wonderful, and adds body to the melody. So unlike what others do.
Gerte, jsi velký muzikant, závidím ti tu lehkost, s jakou hraješ a improvizuješ. BRAVO
WOW...just sooo fulfilling. A few chills in the last half too.
LOVE the very gradual crescendo, all your flourish and registration.
Just perfect to my ears, mind, heart and soul.
Wonderful playing, interpretation and improvisation.....Thank you Gert.
And I would have lifted my hands at exactly the same time as you.
Very well done indeed! Complex, technically extremely difficult, but played with sublime mastery, Gert has a talent no doubt about it! After the improvisation phase of his progress comes composition.....then watch out, the sky will be the limit for this gentleman I think!
If it's cold play some hard piece and have it warm in no time
Großartig, wunderschön. Einer meiner Lieblingschoräle.
GOD BLESS YOU 🙏. My greating from North Carolina.
Having just been at one of the regular Thursday organ concerts held in St Baaf's Cathedral through July and August each year, I would love to have been there to hear Gert play. The space is huge and the organ massive (126 ranks 90 voices) with the pipes spread in galleries high up over the front third of the church. The sound seems to come from all around you. Truly a great experience if you ever get the chance to go.
Triste wundeichg
The most amazing Jesu Joy I've ever heard.
Genial!
Bedankt.
Gert
Bach would love this young man for playing his music just as he made it to be heard.... 'puffy' jacket, hoodie and all.
Mooi orgelspel, Gert, in onze prachtige Gentse kathedraal! Je verkent blijkbaar de Vlaamse orgels! Doe zo verder! Dank voor de schoonheid die je brengt!
Wow. I'm speechless. Never heard anything like that. Thanks.
Only just discovered Gert in the last couple of days. Made my lock down Xmas. Wonderful that all over the world, even here in the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo one can hear such perfection!
Gert, you created a wonderful peace of music. Many thanks.
Kiitos Gert! Sinä soitat, kuten Bach! T. Antti Ylönen Suomesta from Finland
This is the BEST rendition I've ever heard. Way to go !!!!!! I greatly enjoy ALL your videos. Thank You so much for sharing your talent with us.
Dziękuję i wielkie brawa!
Forget all the world's troubles for a brief moment and listen to Bach, Gert, in St. Baaf's!
This organ is massive. Somewhere in the range of 6000 pipes and I think Gert blew the dust out of most of them on the finale of this piece!!
Do you know who built the pipe organ?
I found this specification: www.andriessenorgelbouw.be/en/GSB-info.html
It lists the original builder of Bis & Destré in 1653 plus Klais of 1935. Probably a major rebuild at that time.
Thank you... this is what I wanted to know!
Wonderful...
