VIVALDI - WINTER (Four Seasons) Organ of Basílica de Santa María, Elche, Spain - JONATHAN SCOTT

- Jonathan Scott plays his organ arrangement of Winter (L'Inverno) from Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" on the organ of Basilica de Santa Maria, Elche Spain. The score of this arrangement is available here: www.scottbrothe...
The Organ was built by Gerhard Grenzing in 2006
The accompanying words are from The Four Seasons sonnets:
THE FOUR SEASONS SONNETS
Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8 No. 4, RV 297, L’Inverno (“Winter”)
1.
To tremble from cold in the frozen snow,
in the severe blowing of a horrid wind;
To run, stamping one's feet all the time,
our teeth chattering in the extreme cold;
2.
To pass peaceful contented days before the fire
as the rain pours down outside.
3.
To walk on the ice slowly and cautiously,
for fear of tripping and falling.
Turn suddenly, slip, fall to the ground.
Then run hard across the ice
until it cracks and breaks up;
We feel Sirocco, Boreas and all the winds course through
the home despite the locked and bolted doors.
This is winter, but nonetheless it brings its own delights!

Amazing composer and organist
This is it. This is the only way I can ever listen to this piece ever again. Thank you for that.
Santa Maria'! That was beautiful. Organ playing like this just reminds how much I appreciate the Catholic faith.

What an amazing instrument, space and talent…
It's really Goddest music!!!
Sheesh!!! I have never heard this on organ! Absolutely beautiful!!!!

I am loving the interpretation of each musical piece, "stanza" into a somewhat lyrical but at least paragraphl form... Titles?!😊
O wow 😂❤
That awkward feeling, when you're a violinist and suddenly realize that one organ can sound better than the whole orchestra 😱
Well it is kinda like laying a whole orchestra at once
Right? My little violin could be overwhelmed by just one of these pipes.
They don't call the organ the king of the instruments for no reason.
@@big-al-montaugh I always heard it this way. The piano is king, the organ is god.

It's a feeling when you admire the work of three geniuses at once. Composer, performer and instrument creator!
Those organs are quite epic.
And of course architect of that space
Please don't compare them...

@@wlrlel Why do you say that?
I clicked this video because I didnt think an organ could possibly do justice to this piece. I was wrong.

A well-intoned and enough-variable (romantic) organ can "speak" every language of the Music..., from folk songs, through operas to heavy metal ;) ;)
@niecers And very much, if not more so, on the player.
I thought the same and learned another fact while hearing this with wide opened ears. Simply fantastic transscription. Somebody said Bach often composed using violin as soundgiving instrument. This here may be another hint that this seems to be possible. Thanks for sharing to the poster!
I believe only the things that are incredible.
Mom, I want an organ
Son, you've finally asked something that we don't have at home.
I'll ask the doctor.

Don’t you get the sense that these instruments are just so happy to be played this well. It’s what they were built to do!
Yes their sitting there dormant waiting to be played again
Totally agree.
Very well said.
I do think so. Bless those who learn to play them well.
@@ipodbily Quite the opposite. The cost of maintenance, rarity, and required space of a serious organ combined make them entirely inaccessible to most organ players. A lot of them wait on for years, sometimes decades, to get ahold of them. Beautiful organs in beautiful churches are many things but common or expecting the first player to show up. Atheists pursued entire ecclesiastic careers to get their hands on the instrument of their dreams.
You know you're a badass when your instrument is larger than most houses 😂
@Paras finn copulate with half a dozen super models, drop a music hit, make millions of dollars, discover enlightenment, buy Apple products and then die😜
@Paras finn fine. Regular models then geez 🙄
@Paras finn 😑😑😑
@Paras finn LMAO
Paras finn the pipes that you see on the organ are usually just there for the show, the real pipes are built into the walls of the church, and there can be like 30 000 of them.
i cant understand pipe organ, so the subtitles helped

If I was ever a method actor, then this would be the tear-jerker moment for me, right there.
Great art Jonathan, and superb sound recording Tom.
I agree. 💖👋
Superb
To those who compare to violin. Yes we all know of course Vivaldi wrote the work for strings. This is a transcription for organ, please stop comparing, or just listen to the original if you don't like it!

Its so heaaaavy, it's a baroque heavy metal :) heavy organ!
You RIGHT , that's it , it's Vivaldi's Baroque :D
It IS a heavy organ. I would love to hear this, as magnificently as Mr. Scott played it, on a 1950's Walter Holtkamp 3/54 organ. There aren't many Walter Holtkamps left around these days because of the exorbitant cost of maintaining them, though. Gerry Hancock played one in CIncinnati many years ago. It was wonderful.
If is true baroque heavy metal you are looking for then listen to recordings on the 1742 Moucherel organ in Albi Cathedral such as this short 1.35 min extract
(Frédéric Deschamps joue sa transcription pour orgue de l'Ouverture d'Alcione de Marin Marais en sortie de Messe le dimanche 20 août 2017 à la Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi (Tarn-France)
Its tuned to the old French baroque temperament and has 3 bombardes (16'): this is the only French Baroque organ to have this. The organ is tuned with 18 ° French tuning fork (LA3 = 392 hz) is heard a tone lower than the current tuning fork around 440 hz. The 16' bombardes sound like modern 32'.

Organs are full of heavy metals. The pipes are made of what basically amounts to solder.
The pieces like this are the rock and roll/metal of their day. Just think of all the classical pop and "mainstream" boring pieces that's been forgotten and sound less than a fifth...emotion provoking than this.
Это другая цивилизация! БОЖЕСТВЕННО!!!
I'm in tears. this organ is so special and beautiful, its sound transcends and spreads to every last cell of my brain... chapeau bas to the organist he did a great job

I've listened to and performed classical music all my life, and I've often thought that I NEVER need to hear the Vivaldi Four Seasons again. This changed my mind. Brilliant transcription. Kudos
I saw this man in this summer playing the organ in a German place called Erkelenz. Very good organist, also in this piece, but I would have liked it if it was played a bit slower....to emphasize the heaviness of the winterseason...

I can't go back to any other version of this composition, including its original instrument arrangement, without thinking this is the best one by far!
I don't know how to call this, but the best possible approximation I find right now is _Gesamtkunstwerk_ . Thank you for making my day, in the small hours of the night.
There is something deeply poetic about Winter being played on the organ.
This power is unseen in a small violin ensemble. Frankly, I love it in this style.

Awesome!! I've listened to a few other organ versions of Winter too, but this is by far the most impressive. Also like that sub-title descriptions.
The 'Sonnets'...poetic prose accompanying the score , like vocal lyrics on a modern concept album. Some music snobs berate the four seasons -personally one of the most majestic and moving pieces of music all time.

The organ is the father of all instruments in a world. Fucking majestic
And also by age. (The oldest instrument to exist is probably the recorder, going back before written history, but apart from it,) The pipe organ has existed for thousands of years !
@@gambe96 Amazing. My favourite instrument, so cool.

Majestic, yes. And your language, horrid! Better SHUT UP!
Mr. Scott shows again his talent for disappearing into the music. It is as if the music is performing itself without a physical cause. His tempos are always adjusted perfectly for the hall. Video and audio, as always, satisfying. Thanks!
The steps control the combo of notes that press together as one in the key

it seems like a strange association but in fact it's like playing the drums. You must not only be careful to make the right rhythm with your hands but also a different rhythm with your feet. Plus here are the notes too so wow... it must be super hard.
