When performed by an accomplished orchestra, Barber's piece is mesmerizing. But VOCES8 just made it otherworldly.

This melody sustained me through a patch of the blackest depression I have ever encountered. I still remember it; two years ago now, lying in bed on a warm summer's evening, too empty to cry, I would listen to it over and over again. Everything was dull; there was none of the violence of feeling that one might have expected, or that came later. This is my first time listening to this version, first time hearing a choral version, and it has the same peace the one I knew had, but there is a purity that instruments other than the human voice cannot replicate. It feels clean, and finally divorced from that patch of my life.
I lay down and slept, and the Lord sustained me.

I am listening to this due to my unspeakable anxiety and pain right now. Remembering the deaths I have seen and abuse, terror, I have exprerienced. I have taken far more sedatives than my doctor instructed. I should be numb, but actually I am finally ablo to cry. And even write this.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's such a hard way to be feeling. Is there any way I can help? I know I'm just an internet stranger, but I sincerely wish I could sit with you now, and just be there. Please take care of yourself however you can, and reach out to your doctor or someone you trust as soon as possible. I'm praying for you; the Lord bless and keep you through all these horrible hours.

@lauramorgan7661 Thank you. I try to stay alive till Monday, when I'll meet (what's that in English?) psychiatric nurse. I really don't know what she can do, but the whole life and world cannot be changed in a couple of days. I cannot expect that. Someone else has to know if it is better to be stressed and afraid or addicted to pills. I try to sleep and listen to music.
      God bless you, too!

Ive been awestruck that a singing group of 30 or 40 could bring Samual Barbers masterpiece to life. But 8!? Are you kidding me? There's no freaking hiding that's for sure. Each one of them has to (and does) bring their A+ game. Congratulations. Stunning.

I played this song as I sat with my grandmother the night she passed away. She always inspired me because of her kindness to others, which is often mistaken for fragility. Her strength shined illuminated stained glass from the outside looking inward. I know Jesus ushered her to Heaven. I hope to see her again someday. ❤

In the spring of 1970 my high school choir performed this piece while visiting another school. We performed it a cappella. On that day we performed it perfectly. It’s a great memory. Our only mistake: we never recorded it. It exists only in my memory. Whenever I hear this piece I am deeply moved and I am reminded of how meaningful it was, and still is. My best to VOCES8.

I performed and soloed with the Tabernacle Choir for 20 years and my wife has been a violinist with the Orchestra at Temple Square, the companion orchestra to the choir, for 25 years. We know and appreciate great classical music performances. This is the finest vocal offering of this great work we have ever heard. Fiercely difficult for an octet! The breath control and long line you need is extraordinary. I sang this in a larger ensemble and tried only to breathe at the rests and the bare minimum at other times, and *that* was challenging. Isn't it interesting that Barber took his instrumental work and transformed it for vocal ensemble? This is one of the truly sublime works in all music. Bravo on your performance.!
