From Wikipedia: Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is a choral composition in one movement by Samuel Barber, his own arrangement of his Adagio for Strings (1936). In 1967, he set the Latin words of the liturgical Agnus Dei, a part of the Mass, for mixed chorus with optional organ or piano accompaniment. The music, in B-flat minor, has a duration of about eight minutes. Barber's Adagio for Strings began as the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11, composed in 1936. At the request of Arturo Toscanini, he arranged it for string orchestra, and in January 1938 sent that version to the conductor, who premiered it in New York with the NBC Symphony Orchestra.[1] In setting it to the liturgical Agnus Dei, a part of the Mass, Barber changed the music only a little.[2] As with the other arrangements of Adagio for Strings, it was published by G. Schirmer.[3][4

Fiercely difficult for an octet! The breath control and long line you need is extraordinary. I sang this in a larger ensemble and tried only to breathe at the rests and the bare minimum at other times, and *that* was challenging. Isn't it interesting that Barber took his instrumental work and transformed it for vocal ensemble? This is one of the truly sublime works in all music. Bravo on your performance.!

The first time I heard this music was in sad circumstances, and for decades, whenever I heard it, those memories of sadness would return. As I listen to this performance tonight, the sadness is replaced by a deep feeling of peace, and I have no doubt that will continue forward. Voces8, your truly amazing ensemble singing always brings such a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction that it is the music and not the performers that are brought to the fore. You have obviously found a wonderful new soprano to carry on seamlessly in excellence. An understatement: This, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done! This is the very finest a cappella singing there is. It almost borders on the impossibly beautiful. This is like pure honey for the ears. I know Sam would be thrilled by their performance.

      Yes!
Our 'spiritual nature' or 'spiritual side' is a really useful and appropriate way to describe to others that we can have such feelings - outside an organized religion.
I wish more of us would say this as well as you have.

My father passed on may 16 a few days before my bday, wedding anniversary and mother in-law passing. I say all that to say this is not about death for me but one of the most beautiful songs I could ever imagine. I'm a fan of the Coral version and Orchestral version but this one brings me down off pure beauty alone. To hear us as people come together to make such beautiful sounds is almost a lost art. Please continue to make more!!!

    Tears roll down my cheeks,
though I know not a word they speak
I can hear the Soul of the music,
it touches my own Soul with its love
and I am lost in its beauty
and I am happy being lost in it,
    salt tears being so sweet,
the voices of Angles being so sweet,
this lonely moment being so sweet,
I will never know bitterness again.

    This piece is absolutely sublime.
I'm not religious though am very spiritual. I played it in the hospice where my partner was dieing at the age of 33 on his last evening, and then again at his funeral.
It reduces me to a blubbering wreck every time I hear it.
I love it, and this rendition is perfection.
