I prefer this to the Tenebrae version which is amazing too.. it doesn't get better than this. this choir just keep getting better and better. the last two years have been their best I feel.
I am convinced that this is the greatest choral group of its generation. They are perfect. Their voices are perfect and they harmonize beautifully. They give each other’s voices incredible support, so that to listen to them is to be transported beyond time. Barnaby Smith is a complete genius. They are also abundantly generous in teaching choral music and voice to students throughout Europe. They deserve every fan and every accolade that can be given, especially in this day when auto tuned and pitch corrected voices are the norm. They demonstrate the beauty and the majesty of the natural human voice with all of the emotion it conveys and brings forth in the listener.
I agree. If appreciative of music like this, there are another group out there that not many people know of. They are absollutely out of this world too. ruclips.net/video/aR1WZcP2YY8/видео.html Purely for inspiration. And their take on Crux Fidelis is also nothing less than amazing.
Imagine allegri being dragged 400 years across time and sat down in front of a screen, slapped on good headphones... and then for him to watch people born centuries after him perform his music to such incredible perfection. I imagine there would be tears rolling down his cheeks
Oui cela est ..... La voix d'Andrea Haines, est pure, forte, dépouillée, parfaite, touchante.... En réalité elle ouvre littéralement les portes du ciel
As much as I love Renee Fleming's voice on the soundtrack when Arwen steps out from the banner at the end of Return of the King, could you imagine Andrea singing that? It would be out of this fucking world.
The Latin words are simple: "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God . . . (repeat). Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace." 😊
I saw a small clip of this performance on TikTok and I almost broke my knee caps running here to listen to the full performance. I sat with tears flowing and my hand over my mouth in awe the entire time. Just beautiful. I had goose bumps and just was taken back to glory days of listening to a cappella choir music.
I’m a professional musician and educator with 65 years of life in music. This is the most beautiful music I have ever heard. It has a powerful influence on the state of mind and soul. It is the most powerful painting or sculpture ever created for the ears. No, Mozart couldn’t have transcribed the entire piece from one hearing. Not possible even for a musical genius such as him. His father, Leopold invented the myth to promote his son.
Check out the video from "Early Music Sources" about "Falsobordone, the Miserere of Allegri ...". It is very interesting, and states also the the story with Mozart is perhaps just a myth. And Elam Rotem speaks here also about other "musicological errors" regarding this piece. But that doesn't change how beautifully Voces8 sings.
Perhaps it's not impossible for Mozart to have transcribed the 'Miserere' after only one hearing. The music actually has only three distinct sections: the full choir, the small (concertina) choir and the baritone plainsong. The melodies in these three sections do not change throughout the piece, except the last phrase where the final chord becomes a major rather than a minor chord. Having said all that, the music is sublime, as are Voces8.
@@irisjacobs1139 The question ist not if Mozart could have been able to transcibe this piece. The question is if he did it. There is not any single source, scores, or a letter known about this. And also no contemporary sources from other people, who could have seen the transcription, do exist.
Barnaby Smith is the dynamic life force and center of the group, yet he modestly hides this, letting the sopranos capture most of the attention and praise, while he just smiles his engaging smile. His cultured vitality, endearing kindness, and vibrant countertenor are more apparent when you see them perform in person...he is truly a powerhouse. Before seeing them live, I also fell into the widespread habit of nearly considering everyone else as "supporting cast" for Andrea: this is to wrong these world talents terribly. Seeing them live makes one deeply realize each power and personality here. The soaring soprano is clearly the icing on the very-rich layered cake--undeniably exquisite and sublimely ornamental--but one doesn't want to eat just the icing, you know? Search in the entire cake for the sultanas, the rare spices--each individually savored as well as in perfect blend and balance--and the hidden gold token. : -) p.s. This recording is an absolute dream, surpassing angel-song into that of the archangels: eight of them, each stunningly beautiful.
That this listener will take the time to present such thoughtful comments is a further indication that the Voces8 sound, its character, or culture as it were, is unique. I have no training or expertise in choral music, but somehow this group transcends my lack of experience and I can simply listen and enjoy the music of the spheres. 🙂
Absolutely beautiful, perfectly sung, Andrea’s soaring voice sent shivers down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Voces8, listening to you sing is the nearest you can get to Heaven on earth. Easter blessings to each of you.
This! Absolutely breathtaking! This is the long sought after "Miserere," in perfect pitch - harmony - inflection. Also, that it was published during Holy Week! Perfection!
I’m a Muslim, I didn’t understand any words they sing. But I truly enjoying the harmony of this choir. Their voices is angelic. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Based on Psalm 51. It’s all about a kings request for forgiveness from God after he has committed awful sin and the assurance that God has granted it to him.
Have Mercy On Me, God Have mercy on me, God According to your great kindness And according to the multitude of your mercies, Erase my iniquities Wash me completely from my iniquities And cleanse me of my sins For I know my iniquities And my sins are always before me To you alone, I have sinned And done evil before you That you may be fair in your speech And justified in your judgement Behold, I was conceived in iniquity And in sin did my mother conceived me Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts And you teach me wisdom in the hidden places Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow Let me hear your joy and gladness And my humble bones will rejoice Turn your face away from my sins And erase all of my iniquities Create in me a pure heart, oh, God, And renew your right spirit within me Do not turn me away from your sight, And do not take your Holy Spirit from me Return your gladness and salvation to me And uphold me with a willing spirit I will teach sinners your way And they will be converted unto you Save me from blood, God, God of my salvation My tongue will praise of your righteousness Lord, open my lips And my mouth will sing your glory Because you have not desired sacrifices For you don't delight in sacrifices, or I would do so Nor do you desire burnt offerings The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit A broken and humble heart God will not despise Do well before the Lord in your good pleasure to Zion And build the walls of Jerusalem Then you accept the sacrifices of righteousness In oblations and burnt offerings Then they will offer bulls on your altar.
My dream came true: to see and hear Voces8 singing Miserere Mei, Deus. Thanks to all of you. Another piece I'd really like to hear with Voces8 is Tchaicovsky's Cherub Hymn. God bless them always!
They really are Voces9 - 8 singers and the room. Notice how the quartets moved to change their resonance according to where they stood. Amazing virtuuosity.
when they do concerts, surely, but in the case of this video, it does not seem like it is live-recorded, or the choir microphones are well hidden (generally they are not further than 1.5m from the singers, especially for an octet). They do amazing live recordings, I was in love of their videos of the Messiah, but here I doubt that it is the case.
after a second thought... it is actually POSSIBLE that the microphone is 10m away from them. Which would make their work and the talent of the sound engineer even more amazing!
50 yrs ago an ensemble sings this holy song, and they each leave in silence each going home to their husband wife or parents. If I'm going to sing a holy song, I ought to ponder my life. If I listen to a holy song, I ought to ponder my life.
A few years ago I went to Sukhotai, an old capital of Siam. At 6 am I rented a bike and entered the ruins, surrounded by a lush tropical park - the sun was rising, turning old Buddha statues and stupas into radiant gold. Throughout the time, I had VOCES8 "Enchanted Isle" seeping into my ears, which made the experience that much more magical. Now you have done it again. Thank you...
This brings me back to my childhood, and my beautiful brother singing the high part as a treble in his men and boys choir. I love you Joseph, you are so missed.
I have heard this before - still quite beautiful. One thing I always appreciate with VOCES8 is the uniform, regal presentation of the music - posture, dress, setting, clear audio, and video. No namby-pamby or slouchy structure, but one which brings the best of the music. Also I’ve heard many “renowned” singers who may have great range and tone, but you can hardly recognize a word of what they are singing. VOCES8 actually move their tongues and enunciate! You can hear the musical text even as a group. Beautiful women, handsome men, well-dressed, polished - I hope they avoid musical casualism for these types of works Although I listen frequently to VOCES8, I feel like I am missing something when I don’t see them perform. So I am grateful for the videos/audio presentation, who focus on the performers at the appropriate times. Kudo’s to their production team - very refined. I can’t help but to support this group!
Absolutely stunning from the gloriously free and floating soprano of Andrea Haines (who magically seems to continuously get better…somehow) all the way down to the new bass, Dominic Carver. It’s stunning to me how this group maintains and exceeds even as they encounter personnel changes; an incredible accomplishment.
So touching. How long ago I sang it with our choir. And will never in my life sing it again. Thank you Voces 8. It was like I stood into the middle of your ensemble and my soul was singing with you.
I am always unreasonably pleased that the soaring soprano line is a transcription error (made by Grove's editors) when publishing an updated version. I always call it my favorite soaring mistake.
Listening to such angelic voices I've got the feeling that God wanted to give us a small piece of what he listens in his heaven sorrounded by thousands of angels singing to his glory. We are blessed for having such privilege of listening to you voces8. I can hardly Express what I really think and feel while listening to you. Blessings to you already blessed.
...a kind of crystalline perfection is achieved here...ethereal and transporting it touches on an extra dimension if one is open to that sort of thing...a real stunner...
Thank you so much for these 8 minutes of absolute beauty. Even though I've heard you many times, I am constantly and pleasantly surprised by Andrea's crystal pure tone.......especially at the top of her range......and seemingly effortless to boot. Love you guys!!!!!
At last. Okay everyone's talking about Andrea's high note (which truly is incredible by the way), but can we talk about that gorgeous inflection at 6:11?
Thus far The Sixteen's breathtaking performances of the Miserere hold the top spot. Given Voces8's absolutely stunning level of musicianship, interpretation, technical skill and feeling I am really looking forward to hearing their performance. I'm expecting it to be the high point of my Holy Week musical experiemce.
I've listened to this recording now about a million times. There is something simply regal about the voice of soprano Andrea Haines. In its purity it is like the truthfulness of the truth: the tuneful ringing bell of the Holy Spirit. It reminds me of the passage in Wisdom 7, which says that [wisdom] is the brightness of the everlasting light, the unspotted mirror of the power of God, and the image of his goodness.
The Good Lord's blessing. I am a musician and artist for many many years 1968 trumpet in 6th/7th grade to the present, mulit instrumentalist, orchestration, arranging, composition etc. I am in awe of the human voice. There is nothing like hearing a soul that sings, let alone a group of 8 in a church choir, touching your heart and soul in all sorts of ways indescribable. ;-)
This is beautiful in performance and much skill, talent, hard work, has gone in to producing a delight, to respect a classic older work. Loving thanks. The purity and resonance of it offers all of us peace.
The architecture of the space, sound engineering, cinematography, and editing are just about as outstanding as the choir. Everything about this is the work of a master. Also that last chord will haunt me for life.
Just thinking about back in the day, I gave you 2 Chronicles 20 about your situation with your friends watching..and suddenly instrunents were passed out...and now we are gloriously catapulted to here, NOW.. all of us watching GOD'S WAYS and marveling wondrously. together.
So, I wanted to let y'all know that I have been allowing my mind to roam back to the 70's, when I was in college, & I was blown away by the singing group they had at the University I just started to attend. Indiana. Beautiful pieces that were a little 're-worked' before they'd sing in front of very large audiences. I actually had the idea to try-out to sing with them. I had to sing in front of the director, & all thirteen of the singers. I sang two songs, (piano only) Carli Simon's, 'Coming Around Again,' & 'You're so Vain.' I was more than excited when they called me later that night to say, 'YES!' 👍🏻 (I never had much confidence in my singing voice.') The very first 'tour' we went on was after singing an old time favorite we practiced relentlessly on. 'Chattanooga Choo Choo.' It sounded so lovely! 🎵 I've been following your beautiful voices for a few years now. I'm wondering, since I'm older now, if y'all could, would possibly sing that song? It's definitely a very feel-good, summertime song. Thank ALL of you for always adding a smile to my face, as well as my day. ❤
Back 3 years ago I listened to their 2015 recording of this masterpiece during lockdown. Feeling both lost, confused and just trying to make sense of the situation that this world is suddenly faced with. This song brought me so much comfort back then! And this is truly another phenomenal performance. Thank you Voces8 for the wonderful performance
The depth , beauty and emotion . The excellence . This is to be dearly cherished in our culture dominated by bovine worship of celebrity , materialism , banality & narcissism and worse.
This is probably my favourite piece of music and this is an absolutely incredible rendition! The tall lady sung the piercingly high parts so seemingly EFFORTLESSLY ❤ I am stunned!
I prefer this to the Tenebrae version which is amazing too.. it doesn't get better than this. this choir just keep getting better and better. the last two years have been their best I feel.
Voices are so pure. Brutally beautiful…the soprano is beyond mesmerizing and magnificent.
“Brutally” beautiful? Proving once again, there’s a first time for everything.

Hear hear! 👏🏻
I humbly agree with you.
Voces8 and Tenebrae Choir are my favorite choral groups for sure. Very similar style and level of perfection.
Your words ring so true. This is truly a sound from heaven itself. Marvelous voices thank you all for a magnificent perfornance❤
Imagine allegri being dragged 400 years across time and sat down in front of a screen, slapped on good headphones... and then for him to watch people born centuries after him perform his music to such incredible perfection. I imagine there would be tears rolling down his cheeks
And there it is .... Never heard it sung better. Andrea Haines' voice simply out of this world.
Could not agree more. These folks simply blow me away.
Oui cela est ..... La voix d'Andrea Haines, est pure, forte, dépouillée, parfaite, touchante.... En réalité elle ouvre littéralement les portes du ciel
New College version remains the best in my opinion... A bit fast to my taste here !
@@panzerceremoniaire8359 When you have two on a part, it is very difficult to cover the staggered breathing. Much easier for an entire choir.
And she makes it look so easy.
This breaks my heart wide open every time I hear it. Praise the Lord, we need more beauty!!!
Andrea is the nearest to an elven queen walking among us mortals.
As much as I love Renee Fleming's voice on the soundtrack when Arwen steps out from the banner at the end of Return of the King, could you imagine Andrea singing that? It would be out of this fucking world.
She pulled that high c all in one breath, as it should be sung. Astounding really nobody else ive heard has done it all in one breath as she has here

Same from tik tok
That singer with black hair has an incredible voice
I'm listening, mouth agape, hardly breathing. Incredible. Gives one hope for humanity.
Una glória escucharlo
This will bring tears
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how angels sing❤
Holy Week captured in 8 minutes of pure perfection
I don’t think there is anything more beautiful in this world
My heart breaks every time i listen to this. It is *perfect*. Allegri himself would be honored.
My therapist, May he rest in peace turned me on to Miserere about 30 years ago and I never tire of listening to it. This version is exquisite.
Therapist was Otto Desiderato, a beautiful soul.
I like the pure tone; no vibrato.
God deserves nothing less than this
This is truly the sound of heaven. The voices are sublime and I just can't get enough of it. Thank you Voces 8 you deserve God's Richest Blessings ❤❤❤

This is from the Psalter of David. In Orthodox it is read as Psalm 50. Beautiful Indeed!
aren't you supposed to listen to music at all ? 🤔
Based on Psalm 51. It’s all about a kings request for forgiveness from God after he has committed awful sin and the assurance that God has granted it to him.
Have Mercy On Me, God
Have mercy on me, God
According to your great kindness
And according to the multitude of your mercies,
Erase my iniquities
Wash me completely from my iniquities
And cleanse me of my sins
For I know my iniquities
And my sins are always before me
To you alone, I have sinned
And done evil before you
That you may be fair in your speech
And justified in your judgement
Behold, I was conceived in iniquity
And in sin did my mother conceived me
Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts
And you teach me wisdom in the hidden places
Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean
Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow
Let me hear your joy and gladness
And my humble bones will rejoice
Turn your face away from my sins
And erase all of my iniquities
Create in me a pure heart, oh, God,
And renew your right spirit within me
Do not turn me away from your sight,
And do not take your Holy Spirit from me
Return your gladness and salvation to me
And uphold me with a willing spirit
I will teach sinners your way
And they will be converted unto you
Save me from blood,
God, God of my salvation
My tongue will praise of your righteousness
Lord, open my lips
And my mouth will sing your glory
Because you have not desired sacrifices
For you don't delight in sacrifices, or I would do so
Nor do you desire burnt offerings
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit
A broken and humble heart
God will not despise
Do well before the Lord in your good pleasure to Zion
And build the walls of Jerusalem
Then you accept the sacrifices of righteousness
In oblations and burnt offerings
Then they will offer bulls on your altar.

And there we go… the long awaited gauntlet gets thrown down. Going to be hard to beat this rendition. Awesome job as always
Thank you so much for these 8 minutes of absolute beauty. Even though I've heard you many times, I am constantly and pleasantly surprised by Andrea's crystal pure tone.......especially at the top of her range......and seemingly effortless to boot. Love you guys!!!!!
It physically hurts how good this is.
The coming of the Light... Let me not be caught asleep but let me be ever vigilant for the Coming of the Lord.
Welcome to the new bass singer too. He did a splendid job.
7:45 essa parte da musica me arrepia todo, que bela melodia, magnífica.❤❤
Simply stunning - you are the best vocal group in the world at present. Your works are absolutely flawless.
If ever a God would have felt the need to boast about his creation: He would have chosen You!
At last.
Okay everyone's talking about Andrea's high note (which truly is incredible by the way), but can we talk about that gorgeous inflection at 6:11?
Staggering.
This music and the psalm are beautiful beyond measure.

No one cares what you like
I've listened to this recording now about a million times.
What is it about the beauty of sound that brings me to tears? Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful harmony. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Good Lord's blessing. I am a musician and artist for many many years 1968 trumpet in 6th/7th grade to the present, mulit instrumentalist, orchestration, arranging, composition etc. I am in awe of the human voice. There is nothing like hearing a soul that sings, let alone a group of 8 in a church choir, touching your heart and soul in all sorts of ways indescribable. ;-)
An interpretation that awakens the sacred within each one, which invites reflection and humility in the face of divine power...
Greetings from Brasil.
What a wonderful gift for Easter Holy Week.
Lovely as always. Andrea sings the high Cs so effortlessly, it gives me chills.
Os anjos do céu devem cantar assim à face do Nosso Senhor Deus. Magnífico!
Best performance of Allegri’s Miserere ever. Very in tune and well performed ❤ moves me to tears😢
questionable .... for comparison listen to the Tallis Scholars' recording from 1980 in the Merton College Chapel , Oxford
@@ulrichdannenbaum4472 yes that is also quite good and comparable. I think the version of Voces 8
Is super beautiful

This is beautiful in performance and much skill, talent, hard work, has gone in to producing a delight, to respect a classic older work. Loving thanks. The purity and resonance of it offers all of us peace.
I cannot stop watching this. The staging, the movement, the groupings, but of course most of all the incredible sound. So beautiful.
The architecture of the space, sound engineering, cinematography, and editing are just about as outstanding as the choir. Everything about this is the work of a master.
Also that last chord will haunt me for life.
A more perfect performance I cannot imagine.
Clear crisp and absolutely beautiful
Breathless here with the deepest admiration and respect…. The tears are flowing. Thank you. ❤🙏
I keep wondering where Andrea takes a breath! Absolutely beautiful.
I am positive that this performance will be impeccable in every way❤
Just thinking about back in the day, I gave you 2 Chronicles 20 about your situation with your friends watching..and suddenly instrunents were passed out...and now we are gloriously catapulted to here, NOW.. all of us watching GOD'S WAYS and marveling wondrously. together.
This version and Tenebrae Choir are my favorite.
And Higginbottom....
This is the closest to heavenly music I think we can achieve
Absolutely exquisite. I just love this group.
I sang two songs, (piano only) Carli Simon's, 'Coming Around Again,' &
'You're so Vain.'
I was more than excited when they called me later that night to say, 'YES!' 👍🏻
(I never had much confidence in my
singing voice.')
The very first 'tour' we went on was after singing an old time favorite we practiced relentlessly on. 'Chattanooga Choo Choo.' It sounded so lovely! 🎵
I've been following your beautiful voices for a few years now. I'm wondering, since I'm older now, if y'all could, would possibly sing that song? It's definitely a very feel-good,
summertime song.
Thank ALL of you for always adding a smile to my face, as well as my day. ❤
Thank You Voces8 For This Beautiful Gift Of Glorious Music ❤
They did a really good version
Back 3 years ago I listened to their 2015 recording of this masterpiece during lockdown. Feeling both lost, confused and just trying to make sense of the situation that this world is suddenly faced with. This song brought me so much comfort back then! And this is truly another phenomenal performance. Thank you Voces8 for the wonderful performance
Gracias , gracias, gracias, voces 8...I have no words
They have finally Sang it 😭 my heart is so full! Thank you Voces8
The depth , beauty and emotion . The excellence . This is to be dearly cherished in our culture dominated by bovine worship of celebrity , materialism , banality & narcissism and worse.
Speechless. A beautifully executed presentation of an amazing performance.
This made me tear up, so very extraordinary beatiful
This is probably my favourite piece of music and this is an absolutely incredible rendition! The tall lady sung the piercingly high parts so seemingly EFFORTLESSLY ❤ I am stunned!
Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.
Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam.
