I’m so grateful to all the choirs and directors who taught me beautiful classical choral music. I’m 73 and it’s lost unless someone teaches you. I’ve sung in every choir I could sing since I could sing. A never ending life long joy. What a gift. I’m still singing.
How is it possible that a 19-year old in a stuck-up school creates such a beautiful piece? It has stood the test of time. All serious choirs in the world sing it. It remains my favorite piece to sing.
😂😂😂 What a funny comment! Because Fauré was a master composer, that's why! And it has 'stood the test of time' because it's composed music, not the Spice Girls or Eminem or Justin Bieber (etc etc etc). 😂😂😂
No internet no devices no tv etc. nothing to do all day but ply his craft. Same reason a 16 year old leads 4000 men into a bloody battle 500 years ago. Never happen today. Our kids are way too stupid and it’s all the time in the world to waste and their lack of problems to solve with it that makes them that way. Devices man. They ruin us.
I absolutely agree with you! I have two music degrees and taught music in schools for nearly thirty years. This piece is perfection, and these musicians are truly the finest. It's heaven on earth to me. ❤
One of the most elegant, exquisite choral pieces of all time, presented and performed with such grace and beauty by the entire ensemble. Thank you. Your music makes each day so much better. Anne Williams
You expect the people in the church to be able to sing this piece? Not only is this in french but it's quite a complex piece. Do the average person know this??
Voces8 is always the best; however, this time you were complimented by the best orchestration of this piece that I have ever heard. Taylor Scott Davis was divinely inspired when he wrote the orchestration for this wonderful piece of music.
Fauré was a precociously brilliant composer. By his late teens, he had already developed his own unique and confident musical voice. VOCES8 grade 10. Congrats!

@awakening4210 Thank you very much. My community choir here in the USA is learning this song to sing in French, and it's very nice to know its meaning.
Exquisite! I don't think most people know how difficult it was for us conductors and musicians to play during pandemic restrictions of 6' between individual players and stands. It's very hard to hear and achieve good intonation/rhythmic coordination. I conducted a Cenerentola in 2021, full orchestra in a huge outdoor amphitheater, which meant about 80' from left to right (most large modern theaters and prosceniums are 40' wide.) You really can't hear beyond 2 stands away. Bravi and thanks to Barnaby and the wonderful musicians and singers for inspiring all of us during the pandemic years. Voces8 was my musical lifeline when everything was cancelled.
@@musiclover148 We made it work and had some of the best sound engineers in the music business. But even then we had to tweak and struggle and ended up going mostly old-school acoustic, turning down most of the sound monitors on stage, removing ear bud monitors for the musicians, and having the singers try to see me instead of the video monitors, which even with the software had a time lag.
Yes! Pieces such as this are difficult under optimal confitions! As a singer, one has to hear everything around you, watch your conductor, and be deaf all at the same time.
Thanks for this this outstanding and wonderful interpretation of Fauré‘s Cantique de J. Racine….to me a special piece of music which stops me always for just a moment during my daily duties and touches my soul. Voces8 thanks also for many other master pieces….I love you all and your music

Really beautiful and imaginative orchestration. Love the addition of the French horn and oboe. The singing is exquisite, as ever. Another heavenly performance of a heavenly piece. Thank you!
One of the most beautiful pieces of music, sung exquisitely by Voces8. I love singing this, as our anthem, but we will never reach these heights. Lovely! Thank you, Voces8!
Absolutely beautiful. And it's so heartwarming to see such an avalanche of appreciative comments from others who feel the same way, just 13 hours (as I write this) after the release of this video. Many thanks to all.
I joined choir my sophomore year in high school and this song still resonates with me more than 12 years later. It was one of the most emotional pieces I've ever had the privilege of performing. I also sang a TTBB version when I went to Region my senior year, but it just didn't feel the same without the soprano and alto parts.
Wow!! I just listenes to this song for the first time ever, as my choir is performing it this summer, and I knew Voces 8 would be the way to go for a first listen. So beautiful!! And the balance between the voices is just superb. What a wonderful collaboration from all of the musicians involved. 🩷
I truly love the beginning measures but I LOVE it when the old man on the French horn interjects some (seemingly) old wisdom and calm to the overall effort. VOCES8 is impeccable.
I remember when you sang this for a Live From London concert. Just exquisite! Thank you for sharing your beautiful voices with us. We are all so fortunate!

My high school performed this during my sophomore year during the 2004-2005 academic year. I was a Soprano and still am. I still remember this like it was yesterday.
A few years ago a German conductor who had been appointed to conduct one of the most important orchestras in France (l’orchestre de Radio France, I think that was) said in an interview that there was still this thing he could hardly understand, that is how little attention or even consideration the French public would pay to their greatest composers, and he took Fauré as a clear example of that. Found this on wiki: Fauré's teacher in advanced piano was Camille Saint-Saëns, who encouraged him to compose. In 1861 Fauré participated in the first composition competition at the school. In 1863 he submitted a setting of Psalm 137, Super flumina Babylonis, for five vocal parts and orchestra. He received an award but no prize because he had not strictly adhered to all conditions.[1] At age 19, in 1864-65, he composed Cantique de Jean Racine, scored for four vocal parts and piano or organ and that time he received the first prize in the 1865 contest.
A beautifully sublime anthem (which I have sung many times -- bass2), exquisitely performed. I will be returning to this interpretation again and again. Thanks.

Exquisite. Flawless execution. Our chamber choir sang this for competition in high school back in 1993. Amazing how the alto part comes right back to me. ❤
I sang this with a choir at a summer school with the Open University in the U.K. I’ll always remember it, it sent chills down my spine. Wonderfully sung!
That horn -> oboe transition in the opening is everything!

I was in 10th grade, since 1985 I haven’t been singing in a choir or musical, I consider those times the best of my life.
Me too, Becky. At 85, still singing. Began with Mr. Gillis, our high school a cappella choir director. He gifted us a lifetime gift.
@@beckybackert so glad that you are 🥰
The ultimate performance… thanks to all! And the oboist is just magnificent!!! Brilliant
He sure is able to go a long way on a single breath.
I studied oboe for a few years and the sound here is precisely the reason why! Exquisite! 🥰
Incredible to think that Faure wrote the Cantique when he was just 19 years old, to enter into a competition!! Beautiful version, thank you.
The quality of this recording and performance blows my mind.
Why am I only hearing this for the first ever time today, and I'm in my 70s. I LOVE it!

I'm slightly younger but asking myself the same question! I love classical music and this piece had eluded me all this time.... Gave me goosebumps.
