  • VOCES8 performs Gabriel Fauré's 'Cantique de Jean Racine' with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Barnaby Smith. The performance was filmed at Cadogan Hall, London in 2021 during the height of the pandemic, and this orchestration by Taylor Scott Davis was created especially for the concert.
    TEXT
    Verbe égal au Très-Haut, notre unique espérance,
    Jour éternel de la terre et des cieux,
    De la paisible nuit nous rompons le silence:
    Divin Sauveur, jette sur nous les yeux.
    Répands sur nous le feu de Ta grâce puissante;
    Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de Ta voix;
    Dissipe le sommeil d'une âme languissante
    Qui la conduit à l'oubli de Tes lois!
    Ô Christ! sois favorable à ce peuple fidèle,
    Pour Te bénir maintenant rassemblé;
    Reçois les chants qu'il offre à Ta gloire immortelle,
    Et de Tes dons qu'il retourne comblé.
    TRANSLATION
    Word of the Highest, our only hope,
    Eternal day of earth and the heavens,
    We break the silence of the peaceful night;
    Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us!
    Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace,
    That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice;
    Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
    That brings forgetfulness of your laws!
    O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people
    Now gathered here to praise you;
    Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory;
    May they go forth filled with your gifts.

    Wow!! I just listenes to this song for the first time ever, as my choir is performing it this summer, and I knew Voces 8 would be the way to go for a first listen. So beautiful!! And the balance between the voices is just superb. What a wonderful collaboration from all of the musicians involved. 🩷

    Fauré was a precociously brilliant composer. By his late teens, he had already developed his own unique and confident musical voice. VOCES8 grade 10. Congrats!

      @@paulwinston6816 : Good luck for success in adding this lovely anthem to your choir's repertoire. As a chorister in my Episcopal Church in Hartford (bass II) and choirmaster in a UCC parish in Vermont, I have both sung and conducted this piece numerous times, always with a deep sense of its musical and spiritual inspiration; and the rendition by Voces8 sets a high standard of excellence, as do all their performances: musically exquisite and diction-perfect. I trust you and your choir will find learning and performing this "antique" anthem a uniquely satisfying experience. Very best wishes.

      @@garywait3231 thank you Gary for your response. I too am a bass and just finished my first year with this choir. We are currently on vacation till August so I’ve been boning up on my music notation to get ready for our return. Our church is the one hundred and fifty year old Unitarian congregation in down town Savannah Georgia. The church has wonderful acoustics and I’m certain that our 25 member choir will do justice to this piece.

    How is it possible that a 19-year old in a stuck-up school creates such a beautiful piece? It has stood the test of time. All serious choirs in the world sing it. It remains my favorite piece to sing.

      😂😂😂 What a funny comment!
      Because Fauré was a master composer, that's why!
      And it has 'stood the test of time' because it's composed music, not the Spice Girls or Eminem or Justin Bieber (etc etc etc).

    Exquisite! I don't think most people know how difficult it was for us conductors and musicians to play during pandemic restrictions of 6' between individual players and stands. It's very hard to hear and achieve good intonation/rhythmic coordination. I conducted a Cenerentola in 2021, full orchestra in a huge outdoor amphitheater, which meant about 80' from left to right (most large modern theaters and prosceniums are 40' wide.) You really can't hear beyond 2 stands away. Bravi and thanks to Barnaby and the wonderful musicians and singers for inspiring all of us during the pandemic years. Voces8 was my musical lifeline when everything was cancelled.

      @@musiclover148 We made it work and had some of the best sound engineers in the music business. But even then we had to tweak and struggle and ended up going mostly old-school acoustic, turning down most of the sound monitors on stage, removing ear bud monitors for the musicians, and having the singers try to see me instead of the video monitors, which even with the software had a time lag.

    20年以上前になりますが、シュトゥッツマンというアルト歌手が「フォーレはエロティックな作曲家です」と発言していたのを読みました。
    それにとてつもなく共感して以来、特にこの曲に関しては悲しみと慈しみに混じってセックスのような喜びを感じていました。それは今でも変わりません。
    今回この演奏にたまたま巡り合い、そのエロティックさよりも「祈り」を強く感じました。
    元より我が子を抱きしめる親の愛のようなあたたかさ、深さがあるのですが、今回はそれらが透き通って「祈り」へと昇華されている。本当に本当に素晴らしい演奏です。音が素晴らしいからか、指揮者さんの表情を見るだけでも嬉しくなる。
    普段より音楽の世界にのめり込む奏者、歌い手が演奏を壊してしまうことがよくあります。
    この繊細な音楽はまさにその危険性が大きいと思うのですが、皆さんきちんとした技術で理性的にコントロールされていて、これもまた本当に素晴らしい。
    不朽の名作を1級の演奏で聴く幸せ。ありがとうございますとしか言えません。
    俺も昔ベースで歌った事があります。あまりにも美しくあたたかい音に、幸せすぎて歌いながら涙した記憶があります。
    もう一度歌いたくなりました。
    ありがとう。

    Trying out a new version of one of my favorite romantic songs because I’ve heard Voces8 before and I love their arrangements. Idk how this Faure classic will translate with a chamber choir number of voices. Hoping for the best! One of the best songs composed by a human, especially so young when he did this one. (I think 19, if memory serves correctly.) so far as I’m listening, it’s wonderful! I’ll update/reply when the climax/decrescendo happens. The French horn is #fabulous, as is the driving harp. Also the blend of voices sounds lovely. Different, but lovely.
    Update!
    An absolutely breathtaking arrangement. Never would have thought a full choir sound could be replaced positively by such a small ensemble but it was exquisite. Changing my go to recording to this one to introduce friends and colleagues to mid/late romantic era popular choral music. Stunning. Brava tutti, gorgeous job everyone! ❤🎉🥹

    Avec ce cantique et le vaste espace de respiration entre les musiciens et les choristes. Dieu ne pouvait qu' être entendu. (Un peuple fidèle bien que clairsemé).

    Nice to hear again. And made all the better by the little or no vibrato from the singers.
