  • Several months ago I bought a brand new 2023 Honda XR150L, put some upgrades and modifications on it, put about 250 miles on it...and then never rode it again. So the question that lots of you have been asking is a pretty reasonable one- WHY?! Why did I just abandon the new XR150 so quickly? Do I hate it, is it too slow, what is it?! Well...today you finally get your answer, and I finally get another ride on the XR150L!

This bike is agile, this engine is the "OHC" with a cam chain, renowned in Brazil, and all over the world... you can buy it without fear... besides being economical, it can handle a lot of sticks... the engine is almost indestructible and very low maintenance... you can do the maintenance yourself at home and you can even do the engine at home by looking at the step-by-step assembly and disassembly of the engine on RUclips, if it melts, which is very difficult... just change the engine oil at the right time and you will have a motorcycle for life...

He could even stand on the log, rev the motor slightly, wheel stand the front end and yank the bike over the log using the skid plate. Bikes this small were made to be man handled over obstacles. Watch out for mud pits though. That little single cylinder will dig in deep and get the bike stuck and kill the engine and clutch. A big single cylinder with a lot of torque will chainsaw its way right through a mud hole.

So all you gotta do is relax, stand & and roll your front tire over and just keep going. The bike can handle it just fine. So can you. Flow over. Going slow to stop you get hung up. This bike does have a nice suspension to roll right on over these logs. It’s like mountain biking when you bunny hop over these logs. Shuttle weight shifts and riding lightly. Momentum is your friend here. Don’t mean crazy fast but roll over easy at first. Just don’t stop. ❤

As an option for tires, could go to trials style tires(such as the shinko 241s), and just run a lower psi when offroading. Personally I like trials tires over straight knobbies for offroading. Just have a small little handpump mounted to my bike for changing psi if I desire it. Grips well, just dont whiskey throttle it out of a corner as it can slide a bit. Love the content man. You gotta love this bike for its simplicity and practicality. Over the years I have made some modes to it based on the road conditions I'm in and my personal needs. Notable mods: 18/21 rims and slapped them with shinko 705s, 520 chain with 13T Front, 40T Rear. Risers, handlebars, handguards, all led lights, skidplate, fork guards and crashguards w/sliders. Handles pretty well for a 2015 model.

First of all, that is a mtb trail you discovered and was constructed for much lighter machines. I would stick to the fire/ service roads especially if just starting out motocrossing. (Possibility exists of being fatally injured in the deep woods and limits your chance of being rescued). Just looking out-
Secondly, being comfortable popping wheelies is a requisite skill for technical single track and for conquering obstacles (watch ‘trials’ videos for inspiration) that are next level!

Depending on the carburator. Get a 100 usd OKO D-Slide, get more flow through the airbox and either modify the exhaust or get a new one that is more free flowing.

Tires my tires on off-roading I think kind of suck when I'm on paved roads and running around in an area that has decent roads the stock tires do fine . When I'm out on the back roads and the county roads that the county does not maintain my stock tires suck I've sled in loose gravel and broke my mirror I've slid off the side of a trail where other dirt bikes were riding and I bet my left side turn signal bracket on the back.
I'd really like to see you do something with tires!!
Mishmash Moto suggested shinko 244?? I've looked at many others and cannot make up my mind. But I know I want a different tire more aggressive to go through the woods and the rough roads and the terrain that only four-wheel drive seem to go down and they seem to be the most fun..

I bought a new XR150L this year. It drove 223 miles before the clutch totally failed. I took it to Honda of Harrison Arkansas and they would not warranty it. They gave me a real hard time too. It took six weeks to get the clutch and I had to pay for it and replace the clutch myself. It turned out that the Clutch Lifter Rod wasn't assembled properly causing the clutch to slip and then burn out. Honda's warranty is no good. They don't have any customer care.
Now that I have it running, why is it running so lean. Did Honda do this on purpose to burn the bike out early?

There definitely is a learning curve to off-road. Look at your options..I don’t know if there’s any such thing as offroading classes; I would suppose maybe somewhere there’s some somewhere if you want to go that route but they maybe expensive. Or you can just keep hanging in there and learning on your own and looking for instructive video’s and reading material. Or see if you can join a club or find some other riders willing to teach you? In any case you’ve got plenty of time to learn. But finding someone more experienced could help you avoid pitfalls and get you fully enjoying this sport sooner and with confidence. And if you’re going to continue riding motorcycles, it would be a good idea to continue learning how to work on them. It would save you lots of money. You are an interested, energetic, motivated person. Hang in there!

If you want to do more off-road stuff with it, you'll need more nobby style tires... however, it will reduce its on-road capabilities. I suggest really trying to figure out if you want/need a dedicated off-road machine like this or not... and if you choose to keep it, maybe look into finding people to ride with to show you the ropes and start off a bit easier with dirt pits and what not. Just my opinion, I've never been off-roading on a bike, so I'm just going off of my gut feeling is all.

Change the tires to universal trials tires. You do not want to run true knobbys if you're riding on any length of pavement. Carry a small tire pump and pressure gauge and drop tire pressure to 18-20psi for the rear and 22-24 for the front once off road. Also, take off the mirrors and put them in your backpack. They can catch on branches and vines and are useless off road, and, you can ride a little harder without them.

Local dealer had three of these in stock on Friday morning. Went back yesterday for something and all three had sold stickers on them. It’s a nice looking bike that seems well built. It’s a bit on the smaller side for me being in 6’3” 220 lbs. I will say that the suspension on the 150 feels a hell of a lot better then the one Honda is putting on the 300L Rally which is a disgrace in my opinion.

@@hvymax My 1st bike in 1995 was a KLR250. The 650’s are great bikes but way to heavy for me. I think I’m going to wait until January for the new Triumph Scrambler 400x hit my dealer. Their stance and sear hight is about the same as the 900 scrambler but will be much lighter. If it’s not for me then the Honda Transalps have landed and already hit a few dealers in my area so that’s something to look at as well especially if I’m going to go with something heavy.

As long as you don't plan on going over 50mph it's a great bike. The bike can go a little bit over 60mph but that's a full throttle. Your maxed out, you don't have power and speed when you need it. That's why I recommend it's a great bike if you plan on driving it on roads with 50mph speed limit so you have a little bit of power to pass or get out of someone's way.

There’s no way the CL500 could handle stuff like this without a proper skid plate at minimum, and I don’t think that’s the route I’m planning on going. I want to keep it more streamlined. Almost like a taller cafe racer that can tackle off-road stuff if needed. But log crossings…hard pass for me on the CL right now. I definitely need to get that thing on some more gravel roads and find some more mellow woodsy stuff for it though!

Right before the log/obstacle give as much gas as you possibly can then use the clutch release to get over it, that action is the magic of motorcycle riding, dirt street all. You are giving it virtually no gas you want to give it almost all the gas for the 150 probably all of it. Don’t be scared of the noise. The clutch will always stop the bike from moving.
Watch be the boss of your motorcycle. It might be the best move you ever make for your riding. Slow down on the buying focus on riding. That said you have good enthusiasm don’t lose that.
