The chord progression after the cluster chords is actually part of their Fugue in G Minor performance for the same year, which is why it's featured n the warmup. Also, Crown has won the Best Brass Performance award three times since 2016, and in 2013 they scored the only perfect brass score in the history of DCI.
It'd the ending to their first number, that sounds like it morphed into the ending of Tocatto and Fugue. I may be wrong, but that's what my ears tell me. Nonetheless, absolutely fantastic chord progression
ruclips.net/video/HoKQEGYrluA/видео.html This is the whole piece.
@@MrDavegiven0330 you are correct, crowns chord progression here is the ending from Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, transposed into Gm, and the final chord is major instead of minor. An extra bar is added just before the final chord to achieve this spicy harmonic transition
@@adamhallmc Thanks for explaining.
@Daniel Sheets Yeah Crown goes to what they call cluster chords where each member chooses a random note within a half-octave in either direction from their b-flat chord. It trains them to know what "in tune" really is.
I fell asleep with autoplay on and the really loud dissonant part woke me up, followed by such a heavenly succession of chords it kinda felt like I had died.
I would feel the same way if I heard that.
lol
Bro woke up to boss music
I live in Carolina, imagine how that is for the ears😅
this is my new favourite comment
I mean, there were Adim and Gsus in there, truly a biblical sequence of chords
It was missing G°/D (the best I could do for diminished lol)

Ah yes, cluster chords, where everyone is told to choose a random note.
Funny story, my band director once told the saxes to do that, and they played a perfect diatonic triad.
@@zgp8850 They are the chosen ones
@@zgp8850 hahahahahah 😂
@@zgp8850 wait please explain this
not necessarily random, for baritones/euphs and tubas they play Bb, B nat, or A. and whatever the corresponding trumpet and mellophone notes are that match that. we played this as well in highschool
woah, that cluster into the Cm9 was and is both brilliant and terrifying, the title to this video is on point

God the move from Dm7 to Ebmaj9 makes my whole spine tingle
I was about to write it !! This Ebmaj9 made me feel like I could fly for a sec.
Yes
Very Hans-Zimmery
power of the deceptive cadence
Absolutely magical. I had to go back to hear it again.
Dsus4 -> Dm7 -> Ebmaj9 -> Ebmaj7 brings me to tears every time, no matter the context.
Just so good.
If they could hold Ebmaj9 for let's say....another 10....YEARS...LOL, I'd probably die one of the happiest men on the earth.
Hard to even describe the emotion, I wonder what is happening with us biologically which could cause that
I literally teared up on this chord progression. Like, I just started laughing out of nowhere as my eyes welled up. Such an intense feeling. 💙🥲💙
@@PolyInProg Just did the exact same thing. Lord what is it about those chords.
@@funkmonsterjones4753 you mean what is happening biologically when you hear these chords? Mainly its a release of chemicals in your brain that cause those feelings. Same reason whenever you hear someone scream you get heightened awareness from fear or shock. You’ve evolved so that certain tones induce certain chemicals

The part that will always amaze me with the Carolina Crown’s tuning sequences is the fact there’s no echo whatsoever. Listen closely to the end!
You mean they released cleanly together? Because that's not the same thing as an echo...
There is an echo tho?
what he meant by no echo is that bc the line is so in tune you don’t hear any dissonance just harmony
@@Kibaomaru okay that makes more sense because you can even hear the overtones due to how in tune they are
1:06
I always knew Gsus would be in God's Hornline
Nice
😎
didn't know the drop the hammer sequence could get any better
This is a different chord progression than the hammer drop.
@@declandougan7243 hammer drop is the cluster chord thing. They change the chorale after it all the time.
@@jamesabramson6435 Ah. Good to know. I figure anyway that the original commenter was referring to the chord progression in that famous "Crown Drops the Hammer in Houston" video.
@@jamesabramson6435 That's it. It was at the Berry Center, a tremendous facility for a school district.
0:16 the contras are so in tune in the perfect 5th that you actually hear the Eb the octave below from the overtones lining up
I think it's them Tubas playing the pedal Eb instead of an overtone🤔
@@johnkwok28 As far as I know crown doesn't do pedals in the same way they don't do screamers in the trumpets, I never marched though so someone correct me if I'm wrong
@@Avstinato From the conductor's expression at that moment I think he really intended the tubas to go low, and you can hear clear tonguing on that Eb🤔
I've never marched too so maybe I'm also wrong, haha
Well we got 3 people could be wrong, anyone wanna be right? Lol
@@johnkwok28 might as well give my two cents as a tuba/physics dude. Basically as we move from high to low notes on a tuba, the upper harmonics (which determine timbre) get louder relative to the fundamental pitch of the note (the pure sine wave). That's why higher ranges sound "thin" and "falsetto" while low ranges sound "brassy" on tuba. In the range of a pedal Eb, the upper harmonics will be much, much louder than the fundamental, as it is more brassy growl than it is pure bass tone. Therefore, the sound of a tuba section playing that note can be modeled quite faithfully by playing it's 2nd and 3rd harmonics (perfect 5th), as little will be missing (again, weak fundamental). Our ears fill in the fundamental for us and it sounds very real as it does in this video. In addition, Eb1 is quite an unstable, nasty false tone for many 3-valve B-flat tubas. I think that, if anything, using physics to trick our ears into hearing it would produce a more convincing Eb1 than actually having players trying to false tone it at fortissimo under the whole ensemble. I could be wrong but that's basically my reasoning!
The transition at 0:50 from the sudden pause, then the incredibly powerful Cm9 to Cm7/ Eb chord gives me immense chills and makes me just melt. It’s crazy how it sounds fake but it’s not, it’s just the magic of an incredible brass section.
The landing on that Eb maj9 was fantastic.
I'd love it if they'd hold the Ebmaj9 about 5 seconds, stager breathe if needed, and continue....
What I really respect about this is that once the chord sequences start, you can identify an overtone on every single chord. It’s like some imaginary member is just nailing it on an 8va line, but really they’re just so well in tune and balanced.
If you’ve got good headphones you can also hear they’re so in-tune that an Eb1 subharmonic is clearly audible at around 0:57 despite the tubas all playing Eb2
God, I swear there's no more heroic and triumphant transition than from a Dm7 to a Ebmaj9 led by a heavy low brass.
Goosebumps every time.
YES!
Me: *Sees title of video*

*Watches video*

same. i knew it was crown the second i saw the title
Everything about this is pure bliss. The ridiculous volume, the controlled tone, and the textbook perfect cutoff...
I swear that 2017 brass book was something else, right up there with 12 and 13
Just a shame the electronics went out on finals =(
@@adamshepherd7370 you know, that’s a problem DCI didn’t always have…
Dm7 into Ebmaj9…. Goosebumps😬
I honestly believe if it were not for my skin, I'd turn into some stage of liquid at that very point.
Welcome to Drum Corps!
I’ve done this exercise while marching, the cluster chord is literally just each member picking a random note, if they are making a chord, they aren’t doing it on purpose
That feeling when a set of chords are played so well it finally puts Bach’s soul to rest
This is absolutely amazing, the control and power almost brings a tear
Listen louder...the tears WILL flow
Not almost
That Eb9. Holy shit.
The fact that this was written by Bach ages ago proves how good he was at writing
The hum of the tubas standing out when they hit the G in measure 15 is amazing, and then it blends perfectly back into the rest of the brass and the G chord.
There's just something so special about a great horn section. This video is so powerful and beautiful it literally brought me to tears
The horns with the 16th notes in to the Gsus into the g into the Gsus again and than in to the G chord is just pure gold
These warm ups are imperative for spectators too...it properly stretches and syncs all of our goose bumps!
Who ARE you, living at the intersection of all that I love?! Thank Jacob, Ringmasters, drum corps, etc
There’s also a very subtly placed pedal Eb on that Ebmaj9, the hornline that year truly was at one of its peaks
Not a pedal Eb, but the tubas are playing an Eb below the staff and a Bb on the bottom of the staff, and they’re so in tune that it makes a lower Eb undertone.
These make me so happy, I kinda like that you left them all as chords rather than score order. It’s like a fun exercise left to the reader to figure out the voice leading
That right there is a man who loves his job
That E flat maj9 hit me like a ton of bricks. What a chord.
The Carolina crown hornline is damn impressive. I wish I had 1/10th of the skill and synchronization they posses
Who else comes back to this occasionally? This is probably my 35th time listening to this
Just wanted to say how much I love your videos and look forward to them
i have a feeling that bach would have absolutely loved this
That Ebmaj9 hits different
The contra tubas are absurdly low...nearly pedaling...by that low note is what gives that chord such resilience.
@@Rainmaker65 as a tuba player… that’s likely low F. such a fun note to play and so powerful if you can get it in tune
@@Rainmaker65 they’re not playing low Eb, that would be a false tone on the 3 valve Yamahas they use, that’s just an undertone from the Eb a line below the staff and the Bb a fifth above that being so in tune
@@eriks1669 it's strange because I understand the mechanics of overtones, because I used to sing a Capella. Loved creating them. Thanks for the extended explanation.
The Dm7 to Ebmaj9 transition sent my soul to another realm.
those who have experienced this irl know firsthand the intense chills this gives. the feeling watching this video doesn’t even compare to how rich and dramatic it sounds in person.
the thing I miss most about marching band (many parts I did not care for and many I loved) is undoubtedly the lot warmups. absolute best moments of drumline were the lots. whether it was us warming up or us watching others, the uncontested best vibes and performances happen in the lots, obviously including the crown brass section. I cannot more strongly urge you to stop by if there is ever a marching competition near you, high school or professional. there is no fee to walk around the parking lot and you will not hear music like that anywhere else.
I'm really really impressed with how clean the cutoff was each time
2017 Crown, best tuning sequence show chunk, it’s close between a few other years but not really, it’s INCREDIBLE!!!
Those cutoffs were godly
i will absolutely never get over the way that Dm7 > Ebmaj9 motion felt
Saw this hornline 4 or 5 times over the course of that year. In all the DCI shows I have attended I can attest that they are the best ever.
if anyone is wondering, this is a chunk from Bach's toccata in fugue for the organ.
Witnessed this the night this video was filmed in Massillon, OH. Absolutely unreal to hear this in-person. Thanks for the transcription!
I hope they come to England. I need to stand in the middle of this before i die...
That cut off is sooooo good
Masterfully done.
Your commentary is on point. This hornline absolutely gets a bunch of its energy from Matt Harloff. Watch any number of Crown's warmup videos (the hammer drop is a good one) and that point is absolutely driven home.
Hearing their shows shows just what chops this hornline has. It is easily the best in DCI.
This is incredible. It literally made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Glad to see we line up on taste the more videos you post. God speed to 100k subs bro

YESSSSSSS I JUST REQUESTED THIS THANK YOU GOOD SIR
I ain't getting dying without a group playing this while i'm being burried on the behalf of god and i mean it throught my whole soul
I've never really thought of it, but why do corps warm up with "cluster chords"? I've heard from people that most of them aren't really chords, but just having their valves halfway pressed, to build up pressure in their horn for a louder sound, though maybe those are two different things? I've also heard that the cluster also just helps resolve into a more impactful/powerful chord than if they just started it off with the "actual" chord.
These are cluster chords, every person is assigned a random note. It’s for for tuning and training your ear. The cluster kind of screws with your ear/sense of pitch and the goal is to try and be in tune immediately once playing in unison again.
@@june-ls1hw This and its a balancing/blending exercise. A lot of others commonly refer to these as space chords too.
it helps center intonation
That Dm7 to Ebmaj9 for some reason just sounds amazing to me.
