The mushroom mini farm is a fun and educational kit that allows you to grow your own edible pearl oyster mushrooms. Everything you need is in the box and the instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. Simply, cut the sealed bag the mushroom spawn comes in, soak the bag, then place back into the cardboard box that comes with a punch-out window. The mushrooms will grow right out of the box and soaking time is about 6-10 hours, but longer is okay too. Then just place your box near a sunny window, but out of direct sunlight.
I grew my mushrooms in the summer so they started to grow within a few days due to the warmer temperatures. Note that cooler temperatures may cause your mushrooms to take a little longer to start growing. At 3 days, I saw some small cauliflower looking bumps appear on the surface of the block, which is called mushroom "pinning." Within a day small gray mushrooms caps had developed. Each day the mushrooms grew larger, nearly doubling in size. About a week after I soaked the mushrooms they appeared ready to harvest. You'll know you can pick them when the tops of the mushroom caps are flatting out and the edges are starting to turn brown. When the mushrooms are "overripe" the edges of the caps will flare upward and crack at the edges. When harvesting, be sure to harvest all the mushrooms at the same time as they can dry out in as little as 24 hours if left on the substrate. Run a sharp knife behind the mushrooms or twist them off by hand. They should break off easily from the substrate. My entire crop yielded about 0.264 lbs or a little over 4 oz. We sauteed them in a little butter and they were pretty tasty.
There are two sizes of this mushroom farm, with the "mini farm" being the smaller of the two. With the standard size, you may be able to harvest 2 or more crops! Just wrap up and place the substrate into the fridge for a couple weeks until you're ready to grow again, then repeat the soaking and growing process on the opposite side of the bag. The second time around you'll want to soak for a little longer and be more generous when watering the mushrooms. It may also take longer for the mushrooms to develop. While I wasn't able to get my mini farm to successfully fruit a second time, overall, I'd say it was a success and a whole lot of fun!

You forgot to mention to flip it over for the 2nd grow/ harvest! Happy Growing
Great tip, thanks for your comment!
Thank you!
Thanks, I was wondering if they grow back after harvest
Literally hat i was getting on here to find out
Flipping it how.... like the upper side or the behind side...
And how many harvests can one box have
Your plate just gave me child hood memories. We had plates like that in the 80's !
Who is here because of Bretmans Instastory 😆
Saino Saino OMG ME 😂😂
Yes it’s me 😂
When finished you can add to your compost pile, for even more goodness!
I'm so glad I saw this, I thought I was growing mold there for a second 😂
Besides that wonderful info, your early 1980's Corelle plate looks as good as new, better than the ones seen in Antique stores!
Haha thanks!
I still have and use this exact entire set. Not one has ever broken.
Mine had a bunch growing in it through the sticky part that closes the top over
Awesome! I saw these and was a bit skeptical, glad to see they grow well.
They're one of the easiest to grow; I've seen them sprouting from the boxes in the store.
I watched a video put out by a different mushroom grow kit company. They advised pulling fruits out with "roots" attached. Cutting the stems so roots remain in substrate inhibits regrowth.
Thanks for the tip!
They had these at Home Depot today for $8.99, same thing. They do every year at this time. They don't carry them all year and now is the best time to get them.
Yes! That is where I got mine. After the holidays they may go on clearance (they did last year, for $5 each), and I bought a couple boxes to grow and give away as gifts.
SleestaksRule 8.99!?!? I saw them at Walmart for 19.99! Glad I didn’t buy there.
Really helpful review. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Beautiful!
I bought one of these. Thanks for the video. Going to try it. You didn't make them sound very appetizing, though.
Haha, perhaps not. But if you like mushrooms in general, you'll probably enjoys these as well. They're fairly mild and have a nice flavor.
Do they continue to keep on growing after you harvest them or do you have to get a new box
You can usually get a second crop out of it, by turning the bag around and cutting a hole on the other side, though it produces less on subsequent fruitings. After harvesting and opening the other side of the bag, continue to care for it the same way and it should fruit again after several weeks.
I found a mushroom in my yard and put it on top of an old hay bale under a bushy tree. Forgot about it, but next time I looked there were lots of little mushrooms growing on top of the bale. But they were old and torn up, possibly nibbled by creatures. What kind of mushroom, I don't know, so wouldn't have eaten them, myself.
i inoculated the top of mine with some special spores
Cool, hope the two colonies don't compete for resources tho!
Did it work?
@@QuantumTelephone no the mycelium killed the spores it just never grew
I accidentally cut the flaps off is that of
Dang it, ours have already started to split at the edges but I was waiting to get a steak and have them alongside it, hopefully they are still tasty cause tonight’s the night!
You should cut it at the prime time then putting it in the fridge while waiting for the steak
Help! It’s been over a week and my mushrooms are still are still small and black on the tops.
I got my spores from an online dealer on Instagram

I just bought mine yesterday but haven't opened it yet. Q; Once you've made the first harvest, can you do a second harvest from the same kit by just repeating all the steps, or do you have to buy a new kit? Thanks for the tutorial.
Yes, you can! They used to recommend drying out the block for several weeks between "fruitings" but now I think they recommend just cutting the 'X' on the back of the block and continuing to water it in the same manner until it fruits again, which may take several weeks longer.
@@ReviewedByPhil do you need to soak it overnight the way you had to in the beginning?
@@kathrynnsteele7662 Yes, cut the 'X' on the opposite side, gently scrape off any mycelium (white layer), and soak the bag new cut side down for 6-10 hours. After soaking, dry off the bag, and place back in the box with the new cut side facing out. Water using the same method as with the first side.
Nice video
Si comprendí bendiciones muchas
and u forgot to mention that one should pat dry the plastic that come in contact with the water
Great tip!
Great instructional video
Thank you!
Nice vid thx! Is it one harvest and done? For $19 looks like fun but not monetarily worth it as the same amount could be purchased for about 3-5 dollars.
With the "full size" kit Back to the Roots says you can get at least 2 flushes and sometimes 3 or 4, but your mileage may vary. With the "mini" kit that I used in this video you can expect 2-3 crops.
Very helpful, thank you!
"for just... 6 TO 10 HOURS!"
Haha, overnight is fine. Or you can start it in the morning and then take it out of the water in the evening.
I did everything the kit said but the water was brown not clear as the picture here shows. Is my mushroom kit still going to produce mushrooms or have I missed something?? Also there was no card inside the kit.
I think it's probably fine. Just be sure to add water or mist the cut opening once per day and let it receive indirect sunlight.
Do you need to put it back in the box? After you soak it . And if why?
Humidity?
Hey
Do you recommend laser cap for diffuse thinning? And does it helped you
Sorry it's not about the topic of the video
I cut the flaps off is that ok or should I add a little more moisture
I liked your video very much you made it easy to follow . Have you tried any other mushroom kits ? I want to try to grow the different type of mushroom they have in kits . Thank you for teaching me first it takes out all the confusion . I love mushrooms and I am 66 years young disabled so I don’t go out to the store . I don’t have a car & can’t drive any more because of my health . I’ve been staying at home for years before the virus . I like the idea I can grow mushrooms indoors & I don’t have a lot of room to grow anything big . I seen kits on Amazon plus my love of eating mushrooms started all this .Any advice you can offer I’d be grateful for . Much thanks; Elisabeth
Hi Elisabeth! Sorry for not replying earlier. That's great that you're able to find a way to enjoy mushrooms at home! Yes, I have tried one other kind of mushroom growing kit so far, a much larger block of tiger's mane mushroom from Michigan Mushroom Company (purchased at Amazon: geni.us/5uAKa2 [Amazon Affiliate Product Link]). A pretty unique and very good tasting one! However, the kit didn't quite grow them as well as I had hoped and they never reached full maturity before starting to dry up, so perhaps the kit I got (or instructions that came along with it) just wasn't that good. I was planning to put together a video of my experience with it because I documented the process on film, but haven't gotten around to it. I would like to try that one again, or maybe even a different variety so maybe this fall or winter season I'll look for another kit to buy.
Uhh.. i put my mushroom kit on it’s back only when watering.
Will the block remaining in the box grow more mushrooms in the coming weeks?
According to the manufacturer, yes! You may be able to get the block to "fruit" again with a second or even third crop of mushrooms. They recommend placing it in the fridge for a few weeks, then repeating the scrape, soak, and growing process again on the opposite side of the bag (just turn it around and cut an 'X' on the other side of the bag. Although, they said subsequent crops may take longer to start growing, generally have less yield, and require more frequent watering. I would have tried it with mine, but I think I waited too long and it was getting moldy (2+ months... oops!). So instead I removed it from the bag, broke it up, and composted it in the garden as fertilizer. A couple years ago I did try the "full size" version of this brand's mushroom farm vs. this "mini farm" and I got two crops out of it, 8oz and 6oz harvest.
nice vid!!! and do i have to keep watering them till harvest. It may sound stupid but i just want to make sure
Yes, you can mist them up to twice daily (if they look dry, depending on your humidity conditions), morning and night up until the time of harvest.
Can I cut a hole on the other side of the box also any ex slit and get Double the amount is that possible
After mushrooms start coming do u still need to add water or no
No, you don't need to add water unless they start looking dried out.
How many harvests can one get out of this?
Typically each box produces 1-2 flushes of mushrooms, though some folks have reported that they've gotten 3 or even 4 crops of mushrooms from a single block! Remember that each successive fruiting will be smaller than the last as the nutrients in the medium are depleted and it usually take 1-2 weeks after harvest for a new crop to start pinning out.
Can they regrow or did I spend $12 to get $5 worth?
Yes, you can usually get a second flush out of it if you use/cut the other side and soak it again (though not always a a guaranteed success). Sometimes you can even get a 2nd or 3rd flush, but each crop is a bit smaller than the last and may take a bit longer than the first time.
do you still need to water them when they start growing
Not really. Only if they look like they’re drying out. A spray bottle is really handy for that
Are they psychedelic or nah
They look kinda small like they need a bit more air cerculation
It was a big crop. I've grown this kit a few other times. When there are less mushrooms the individual ones are bigger.
How many times can grow up this box?
I've tried this kit a few times and had luck with a second or even third flush sometimes (though sometimes it's just one 😭), but BackToTheRoots says some folks have gotten 4!
Did you get a second flush?
I did! However, the second crop was pretty small from this mini-farm. only an ounce or two. I was able to get three decent flushes from the "standard" size BtR Mushroom kit.
Why do my mushrooms have long stems but little caps and then they start dying I fan them 6 times a day
It's possible that fanning them too often is actually drying them out. Try increasing the spray bottle misting to 3 times a day instead of two and reducing the amount of times/during that you fan them off for airflow. It could also be that the environment is too warm, maybe they are close to a heat source like a radiator/air vent, or are getting too much sunlight. Indirect light from a window should be sufficient. Good luck!
Do you get only one harvest? Thank you, can't wait to try it out. hope they have Lion's Maine.
You can flip it and try for more
How many harvest did you get?
From this particular box, only 2 before it stopped producing, though this is the "mini" kit and I've gotten 3 flushes from the full-size kit in the past.
Can you harvest some while it's growing or do you have to harvest all at once?
You must harvest all at once as a partial harvest can damage the unharvest mushrooms and halt growth.
I ordered and started but I spray twice a day, today is 7 day it does not grow, I called the company I left message, not receive answer, how I can make my mushroom growing. Please help me. Thanks
Hm, try reaching out to them on social media or email, you may get a faster response. I'm not sure how well staffed the phones are due to the current pandemic.
This may be a dumb question but can I just do the same thing also on the other side of The box cut a hole on the box and A X split and get double the amount of mushrooms that way????
Sure. You don't even have to cut the box again, just remove the bag inside and flip it around and cut the 'X' in the other side of the bag and face it out the same window in the box. Just make sure you let the block dry out a bit in between flushes. You usually can't grow two crops back to back, but if you wait a couple weeks in between it's possible.
Can these be grown and not harvested? Keep em as a plant friend per say or will they die out if you don't harvest?
The mushrooms will only last several days after reaching full maturity before they start to "flip" their caps up, release spores, and then will dry up and wither, much like a flower that has finished blossoming. The mycelium in the block will still be alive but aren't much to look at usually!
When you flip it around for a second harvest do you need to resoak it?
Yes. Here are the complete instructions from BttR:
"1. After your first harvest, store your farm in a cool, dry, and dark place (like your refrigerator!) until you are ready to grow again.
2. When you're ready, remove the back panel of your farm's box and cut an'X' similar to the first one you cut in the other side of the bag.
3. Scrape away the white mycelium as you did for your first crop, and re-soak your bag in water overnight. This time, submerge the entire bag in water so that both sides absorb water. If this isn't possible for you, then flip the bag half way through soaking. After soaking, insert the bag back into its box.
4. Water both sides of your farm in the same manner you did before, but the more water the better this second time around! The more water you give your mushrooms the bigger and faster they grow back, so don't ever be afraid of over-watering."
Is it safe to keep in the kitchen? spores are not harmful or anything? thanks!
Yes, that should be fine. The mushrooms, if harvested just when they are ripe, won't release a ton of spores into the atmosphere and, in general, it takes a very high concentration of spores that you breathe in directly and consistently over a long period of time to cause health concerns (for example, if you were a mushroom farmer and were exposed to spores daily in an enclosed room filled with ripe mushrooms for a period of months). Also, your kitchen is most likely not a sealed room and adequate space and air flow will further reduce the chance that you'll breathe in any more spores than you would taking a walk on a forest hiking trail.
Do you throw the box away once you harvest or can you grow more?
You can typically get the block to fruit a couple times before it is spent. Then it can be composted or recycled into a garden 😀
Is this just one time harvest or you can continue harvest? If continue, how?
You can do more than 1 harvest. Just flip the bag over, cut a hole on the other side and continue to water/mist it. It should fruit again in 2-3 weeks. Each successive harvest is usually smaller.
Do you keep watering it after you stand the box up?
Continue to water twice a day until you start to see mushrooms forming. Then you only need to water if they look like they are drying out.
Is there a way to collect spores and continue to grow crops well beyond the 2 to 3 potential crops?
Sure, I guess you could take a spore print from the ripe mushrooms and use the spores to try and colonize sterilized medium like straw or grain. I haven't tried it myself, by it's definitely possible, and there are some good tutorials on RUclips on mushroom growing from spores.
I initially scraped some of the mycelium off of the block and put it to agar and have plenty of healthy mycelium for transfer to substrate/growing medium. You could also clone the mushroom. Just look it up the internet is full of info.
also, what is the scientific name of this particular oyster?
Hm, I'm not sure, it's not listed anyhwere.
YO WHEN ARE THEY READY TO HARVEST MINE LOOK SO WEIRD
They're ready to harvest as soon as the edges start to flatten out and brown a bit. If the edges of the cap are starting to turn "up" like an umbrella flipping inside-out in the wind, they are overripe. You should try to pick/harvest them before they get like that.
How many times we can harvest mushroom 🍄
With the mini farm I'd say at least once or twice, but based on the amount of medium in the box probably no more than 3.
Can you grow over and over again?
Yes, each time takes a little longer
Do they grow back???
You can get multiple crops from one block, but you will have to cut open a different side of the package. Mushrooms will not grow again from the same spot where you have already harvested.
@@ReviewedByPhil ok thanks
Box price and delivery address
I was ripped off my 💰 severally by online scammers, until I found a legit dealer that have been shipping shrooms to me.
I only buy from them and no other. They have been delivering without disappointing

I was scared at first but when I received my package I was so ecstatic because it was worth the $
Is the box necessary after cutting x
Yes, the box helps keep light off of the rest of the block to protect the mycelium. Leaving only the opening in the box exposed will signal to your mushroom colony where to start forming mushrooms, at the X you cut that is exposed to light.
@@ReviewedByPhil thank you
Is this sold in the Produce or Lawn and Garden area in Walmart?
Usually patio and garden. I've seen them at Home Depot as well.
@ReviewedByPhil Ah! Thank you so much Mr. Phil!! ☺️
Can you use the box again as I keep growing them
Yes, you can reuse the box. Often times you are able to get 2 or even more crops from a single box. Back to the Roots has instructions on their website how to do that.
I’m about to harvest my mushrooms and I am curious if you cut them off and just cooked them or did you rinse them first?
I rinsed them, even though I probably didn't need to. These mushrooms don't tend to draw in a lot of water, so a quick rinse should be fine. You'll want to pat or shake them dry before cooking so they don't get too soggy. For spongier mushrooms, like Lion's Mane, I would recommend against rinsing them as they soak up too much water that's difficult to drain before cooking.
Where did you buy this?
Home Depot! But they're also available at Amazon: geni.us/hoQ817 [Amazon Affiliate Product Link]
Amen 🙏😇
Do n’ I have to keep it in the box
Technically no, but it's a convenient way to keep light off the portions of the block where the mushrooms aren't actively fruiting, so unless you have a different preferred way to fruit your mushroom block, I'd say there's no reason not to use the box as designed.
I took it out of the box and put cuts on 2 sides and mushrooms are growing out of both ends. Theres so much mycelium, you guys are playing yourselves by making one opening only
Nice, enjoy your harvest!
Liar
Would not buy . I bought 4 boxes not one grew.
They keep on working amazingly for me tho. They do work.
So, you did buy 4 times... You must've done something wrong. Its harder to screw these things up than it is to have a successful harvest.
