Keeping costs down is even harder now a days. Thankfully the mushroom business seems to be booming for us.
It is hard, especially in the New Zealand market....
so open with your information... much appreciated
My pleasure!
Thank you for giving such great insight on the costs. I’m researching mushroom farming in the US.
Been watching on and off for the last two years, absolutely love your progress man, beyond stoked to see you continue to expand. Currently taking steps to try and start my own small scale farm online, though the legalities around specifically medicinal mushrooms and their associated extracts in Australia are vague and convoluted hahaha. Hopefully can figure it out eventually, either way appreciate the inspiration, always here for the content. Keep it up!
Your honesty is appreciated
Thanks :)
Your videos are awesome mate, can't thank you enough for your sharing. 🤘🤙
No problem 👍
Thank you for sharing! That's a lot of expenses!!
Yes it was!
If you tell adobe you want to cancel a lot of time they’ll try to give you a better deal before they let you cancel..worth a shot😂
I've actually done this once before lol
Your the third best thing to come out of new Zealand after Fisher and Paykel and Blindspott. But seriously mate keep up the good work, love the content.
Boy do I dislike Fisher and paykel! Bought a new freezer and it was broken out of the box :/
Well theres still blindspott. If you dont like them either, im afraid we cant be friends. And lets face it, everyone needs the friendship of some random person online halfway accross the globe.
I want the good old times bad jokes back on this channel ASAP !
haha I know right.. Sometimes a man gotta be serious...
You mentioned in a couple of posts that you had problems scaling. Have you tried larger grow bags and hanging them?
Hey man love the videos! Really informative. Don't stretch yourself too thin though you look stressed AF!
It's a stressfull life!
Thanks for sharing your videos.
Your place is amazing.
I wish I could come for a visit.
I’m trying to set up a 1 man production of fresh mushrooms for farmers markets.
Hoping to produce 100+ lbs /week.
Trying to keep costs low and sustainable.
If you had to start all over again, what would you do differently?
👍👍🎯
I admire your passion for mushroom cultivation and as you are always figuring out new things, I would like to share a thought with you.
Have you ever tried to grow mushrooms in plastic bags with no mushroom filter?
*I wonder why we even use the filter bags. If CO2 is heavier than AIR and the filter is maybe 10cm above the substrate, how will mycelium then breathe any AIR?*
Also, many people cut holes in the mushroom to remove all AIR when making the bags ready for the fruiting stage. How come people need to cut any hole to the mushroom bags, if they have the filter whose only purpose is to "breathe"?
I found a solution. It is not air exchange that happens, but instead "gas exchange" by diffusion... and therefore a filter is needed.
Good work!
Hi Tom, May I ask how much is the cost of construction of your new building in the farm (excluding the mushroom tools and equipment)? Just trying to get an estimate of setting up the structure in a mushroom farm. Thanks
Amazing quality content as always, keep it up tom
Thanks, will do!
I know you said that you were going to speak about revenue in a subsequent video. Is that on the docket to be produced soon, or is this something that you would feel sharing?
How much is the cost of pelet, and what is the price of oyster mushrooms you getting?
cost of the space and build? thxs for sharing its really helpful
Hi Tom, are you still going to be updating your existing online course? I bought it in December when you mentioned updating it. Hoping it's still on the to-do list 🙏
Still is! Working on a new piece now.
Careful growing too quickly. Ive seen lots of buisnesses grow too fast and that causes them to overlook unforseen issues that get multiplied by the fast growth
Grow some Psilocybe Cubensis. It's a good market.
Class A drug in NZ, so that's a big no from me!
unbelievable!!!!
Wow🔥
How do you do second flushes? (Particularly for oyster mushrooms)
Rehydrate the block that’s literally it
Curious, do you keep track of the amount of pounds/ kilos you've sold?
yes.
You stopped selling microgreens right? Was it for something in particular?
to hard basket, gotta focus on what I am good at.
How about helping us to import Shiikate mushroom out here in UK
Can you export fresh mushrooms?
Nice
They're on telegram🔑 and also on twitter✅.
Hello sir, i grow oyster mushroom in nepal. I am planning to visit new zealand if i come to newzealand i will visit your farm too.
I grow oyster Mushroom in Zimbabwe we can as well share ideas if u would find it appropriate
Do you have any competitors that sell mushrooms in your area? Dose it effect you much?
There is always competition. I just focus on my own business.
Are you not worried about giving out your IP?, I see it as only stumping your own market and others with in NZ... Especially if you want to expand to other areas. If it's only a tiny bit of your income I would cut it or just save it for the International market. People can be brutal when it comes to Business. I would seriously think about it more as a risk.
There's not much IP in this video, other than the costs for the 2022 year. I retain a lot of business secrets close to the heart.
@@OakandSpore I was talking you lovely videos I was talking about your online classes :)
Oh!!! No, not really. I actually limit how much information I share to kiwis. For example, I basically won't consult anyone in NZ. I do defend the market here somewhat.
Do you guys offer consulting services? My team is looking forward to open a boutique gourmet mushroom urban farm, can you guys help us?
We do in some circumstances. Send me an email :)
How many watts do you use in total for 1 kg or 10 kg of product?
I don't know
Also.... what is "fish mushrooms"
My guess is another term for oyster mushrooms
@@bryanc733 that's what Google kinda alludes to.
FRESH MUSHROOMS
@@OakandSpore 😂😂
@@OakandSpore lol good old kiwi accent
hiw many lbs do you do per week. Also, maybe I missed it but you have no employees?!!
if i am not wrong your revenue should be around 1.2M per year
You're very wrong, its no where near 1.2m. I am unsure how you got that figure lol
@@OakandSpore hahaha I calculated as follow. u said 1 bag cost u 1.5usd to produce and one bag gives you around 1 kg of mushroom which sells for 40 usd now if u are harvesting 100 bags per day for the whole year its over 1.4M revenue hahaha sorry if this calculation is stupid correct me if i am wrong
@@OakandSpore Would be interesting to see your revenues before expenses.
I'm not harvesting 100 per day. And we deal in nzd, not usd. Market rate for mushrooms is about 40nzd, which is like 25usd or something .
So how much is the actual revenue, or how many kg you made in this year ?
I don't understand how a mushroom farm makes any money. Let's say you meet customers halfway on the fact that they can grow their own for cheaper and sell inoculated substrate bags. How are they not taking a small chunk of that one bag that's ready and throwing it in the backyard? Literally just burying a chunk will make free mushrooms with nothing added and no effort expended. You can do that with various fruits and veggies but they all take long to harvest. Mushrooms are ready every week and eat almost anything.
they wont be ready every week in your backyard that's why people keep on buying them instead of trying to cultivate
them
Hey, somewhat unrelated to the vid, but is there any difference between using straw compared to hay or alfalfa? Jc
What is a fish mushroom?
fresh mushroom
I tried to google fish mushrooms. No luck finding anything. Can someone explain to me what this mushroom is? I'm actually quite curious!
Fresh mushrooms 🤣🙂
@@jamieparatene1656😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Same story here. this is funny
So you didn’t make a profit?
yes we make a profit. but I reinvest almost everything I can to grow.
Before even watching this my mushroom farm turned over 400$ in the first 6months we are still small and only do 158 blocks a week which costs about 1k a week to make so a word of warning to ppl starting out 😅
Getting bigger does also have downsides. Your videos are way less fun than they used to be!
