In this video I update our TV aerial installation, by using an existing socket on our caravan. Some modern Bailey caravans have an external TV output, on the outside, this is more useful for us as a TV inlet, so we can add a Satellite dish or plug into an onsite TV point where signal is not so great. I demonstrate 2 methods for different purposes, both have pro's and cons.

I have the same van and got the dealer to fit individual Sat cables from behind that outside socket to each TV point inside and then made a hole in the outside socket backplate so the cables can be connected directly to a Sat dish with twin LNB. It’s a bit more expensive but you do get Sat at both TV’s. Nice tip for the external antenna and roof antenna with the splitter as I undo the leads and swap them around on the booster and they play havoc with your fingers so I’ll do that now. So simple. Only other issue is I bought a Sat dish that sticks to the side of the van with suckers and either you can’t quite get it to line up or there are wet trees in the way or the dish falls off in the night. Oh the joys of camping and forever fettling.
We had the outside cable put on to our new van by the dealer , we just swap the cables over on the amp. Yes I know I could use a splitter but just got to get round to it. Very informative video and made to look easy.Good work.😊
Very neat job Dan 👍. I fitted external TV & Sat inputs in the battery box 11 years ago when we bought the caravan. The coax hook up cable feeds into the battery box together with the electric hook up cable. Only ever used the tv input but the sat input is there if we ever go on a site with sat hook up. Well presented Dan you made it look easy to do it will be useful for lots of people I'm sure.i think we're going to do what we've been doing since we started this caravaning lark .Kay gets her knitting out and I open the wine.left the TV at home again.
My vans outside connector goes striaght to one of the the TV outlet ports. So I do not need any spliters at all to allow satellite dish or external TV source to work with the TV. If I want to watch TV in the awning I have a small jumper cable to connect the two TV outlet together in the van. The satellite input then becomes the TV outlet.
My old van was setup like yours with the socket. Don’t even need to buy the splitter, just when on a bollard / external socket remove the aerial cable from the amp and pop the external socket plug in its place. I’ll caveat that, mine was standard push fit RF, not screw on, so quick and easy. The screw on would be more fiddly to quickly do, hence I get your mod.

Hi Dan once again very informative Blog. I do the same as SHAKY3142, put the external arial lead to the input in the caravan all t.v's then worked. Did not realise the outside arial point was an outlet, thanks again and am looking forward to your next projects. (2015 Vigo)
Clad I bought va different brand of caravan where it is already done. But I did a similar thing on an Abbey which we had in the past. But tend to stream TV if signal is poor . But one site I have been too ,no TV signal , no satellite signal nor phone signal , had a great long weekend there😊 😊😊

Dan, I've just bought a 2002 Sterling Eccles Sapphire and I've yet to check the TV setup. I know there's a Vision Plus amplifier. I think we'll be sticking with Freeview but the satellite information is definitely useful should I wish to go down that route in the future.

Hi thanks for the vid, we want to do this ( option 1) but also want to keep the fr out in the locker as sometimes we like to watch tv in the awning on a warmer evening or when bbq outside can this be done ?

Hi Dan, I have a. lunar ultima and the external socket is a sat socket. Therefore I assume it’s for a sat dish. If I were to use an f type connector to TV aerial adapter plug on the external socket and inside sat socket, could I use the site TV aerial socket ?

hi great video just one question on my swift caravan i have a sat connection on the outside and when i go to one site the onboard attena struggles for reception and i use a areial but i have upgraded my tv and use to plug my coax lead from the areial into the sat connection on the outside and it got a signal no problem but now i can't get a signal with the new tv so my question is if i split the connection in and split it so the1 will stay as a sat in and the otherside send it to the onboard amplifier will this work and what would i need a spliter or diplexer thanks
Would also recommend some silicon grease when making coax cable connectors to help protect the shield layer on the connector.
Hi Dan. Loving your blogs. I purchase the tools you recommended off Amazon, but struggling to get the F type connectors to fit the cable when I try and crimp them on , as its as if the cable is the wrong size? I have noticed on the actual cable that it says RG6U, and not RG6, is that my problem. The connectors seem to not go far enough on to the trimmed end of the coax cable? What am I doing wrong? Hi Colin,
Thanks for your feedback. The RG6/U really shouldnt be any different to RG6 - the /U denotes "General Use" - so it may just be a bit tight. Here are my tips.
When you cut the coax back, remove the foil, then fold back the braid over the coax outer. This will create some space for the plug to fit between the insulation and the inner of the coax. When you add the plug, I twist it on like you are screwing a plug onto the cable. This I find (although tight) does do the job and it will eventually seat on the cable.

@@TheTrudgians Hi Dan. Thought I would reply, just in case any body else had same issue. After your tips, and saying possible too tight, which mine just was not. The problem turned out to be the outer diameter of the coaxial cable. I purchase some more, and it was 0.5mm larger, which made all the difference, and the mod now finish. 👍.

I can guarantee it, but I’m 99% sure it would be the same. Check your TV amp and check if TV3 is used. If so - it’s exactly the same. 👍
Would this work for a sky Q box also?
Pretty confident in saying no. You’ll need twin LNB, to get to the receiver, this only supplies one. That being said, it would be worth a test, so if you do this and try it with just 1 lnb. Let us know!!!

Your splitter is 1 IN to 2 OUT
You’ve done 2 IN to one OUT - ie reversed it.
Yes, it works. If you have a factory DAB install, you’ll likely see one of these behind the radio.
This splitter has no circuit inside it literally splits the signal to 2 connects.
I tried this and found the external post supply poor and grainy as it was getting confused with the roof aerial. I had to buy the same thing but its got an A & B switch on the inputs, this isolated the roof and the outside point .
@@fil449 this would be the better solution, otherwise you also run the risk of site and van aerial tuned into different transmitters. Both those jumbled up signals would probably cause a few issues.
Hi both. A couple of points here - digital signals don’t degrade to grain, it’s more likely the amp was on? Overdriving the inputs.
Mixed signals are also an urban myth these days - when you tune a free view signal, the end step asks for primary & secondary locations - if 2 transmitters are found your answers dictate which transmitter is used.
If equal signal strength is found, you’ll find multiple instances of same channel - like what I have at home. South west & Oxford etc.
To overcome any multiple channel issues, simply detune the onboard antenna by rotating it 90 degrees to strongest signal 👍

Just what i found Dan using the same splitter.I had to use a splitter with an A&B switch to isolate the roof from the post. Even rotation of the roof aerial was still picking up interference. Unplugging the roof aerial it stopped. Just trying to add to your great video if someone experiences what happened in my Swift.
