Enjoying this a lot. FYI I like it when Fiona has the camera and talks - that's how some of us like to think and process and too little info is not enough!
What a great slice of adventure - thanks for taking us along with you. Hope you don't mind my usual comments! My one suggestion for this episode - but I highly recommend it - is regarding departing a slip or face dock - like you are in the beginning of your video. When it's just you and your deckhand (wife in this case), it's really unadvisable to leave the helm when departing. However in reality I understand that's a tough ask. Here's a big tip... Whenever possible, before starting up the boat and fully casting off, do this: shift the boat a few feet (fore or aft) as needed so that a midship's cleat is opposite (or slightly down current/wind) from a dock cleat. Then take a line from that midship cleat, run it around the dock cleat, and then back to the cleat on the boat. This is called a breast line. Make it short and snug, so that the boat is drawn up tight against the dock. This is done at your leisure just before departing. Then the two of you can cast off all other lines, keeping just this breast line attached (can be done with no one at helm). Once all other lines are cast off, the captain goes to the helm and the mate goes to the breast line (on the side deck on the boat), uncleats the line and pulls aboard. This allows the mate to be safely onboard, and the captain at the helm. At the same time the boat is securely snugged to the dock without the bow or stern able to swing at the whim of current or wind until the breast line is released. Think it through - hope it makes sense - and let me know if it doesn't. Hoping you finally solve your stabilizer and watermaker issue! Teething pains indeed... Best, John
Absolutely and thank you for taking the time to offer great advice. Was not happy with that moment but as always we promised footage good and bad. We notice that most over here also use slip lines to eliminate the requirement of being on the dock. Love the idea of the midships line. I have been following a channel with a guys who travels on his own, he jumps off and on his boat all the time - in the right weather - agree not a good idea.
Love watching your channel. So refreshing to watch you navigate your beautiful vessel and give us such an intimate insight to how you are learning life on a boat. You’ve got a fan.
First off love the videos! If I were you though I would turn on engine blowers a few minutes before starting the engines. The whole point of the engine blower is to eliminate any fumes in the boat before you start the engines
Great video Love it Nice to have Renee onboard, and i really enjoyed the part where you are taking the boat in the slip... more of that would be nice to watch. Take care Keep them coming please.
Love the videos, real life with a complex new yacht. It seems incomprehensible to me that Nordhavn quality control and checklist work pre-delivery didn't catch some of these major issues with the stabilizers and watermaker. Also astonishing that the stabilizer installers bolluxed the install -- they do this for a living, they have done hundreds of these installs. Now you have steering problems? It's enough to wonder if Nordhavn is really the top-tier yachtmaker they claim to be. Thanks for sharing -- your videos are informative and highly entertaining.
Great video, Mark. my personal feeling is that you are too paranoid about lifejacket use. I've gone across the Pacific three times and never wore a life jacket. I did use a harness and safety line numerous times, but not a life jacket. I am always more concerned about falling in and being crushed between the boat and a piling than drowning. Never did fall in.
“Adventures on the high seas with Mark and Fiona”…….what a trip and Fiona as a boater from long ago I totally get what you mean about feeling exhausted…the excitement of the trip itself, no stabilizers to hold you steady, only one engine for the moment and I always found the salt water, the sea air and the sunshine would make me so sleepy……thank you for showing us real life cruising. The Greek islands are beautiful and I hope by now all is fixed. So happy to see Rene back with you for a bit and do wish her well in her new job. Till next time…cheers 🍷
Super video!) It is better to turn on the cable first in the boat, and then to the shore! If you connect the shore power first, you are holding a voltage cable in your hands - it is not safe on the water. Fair wind ⚓
Hi guys!!! Just read the article about your adventures in Soundings…thanks. We will follow you…we are waiting delivery of our NP 49 trawler. Hope to see you on the east coast of US next year!!! Smooth sailing.
Just looked at the NP yacht online. I am very impressed by the quality and space of the 49. Good luck with you new boat she looks a beauty. I am going to have to look at these in person as I am live in California. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Have you been a pilot Mark ? 🙂 Nice to see that checklist's are adhered to, and always remember the ATIS before departure. Nice to hear the Captain of the Tender going through the "Cabin secure" items. As always, our weekly fix of dreaming with you as the stars of the show. A very nice episode with just the right mix of boating, mechanical items, and everyday life. What a trip and thank you so much for letting us be a part of it.
@@AwanuiNZ Yeah, was a joke - I know you were - B777? for air NZ? well, when you move towards west in the mediterranean, I can recommend the port of Porto Venere in Italy, on the outskirts of La Spezia. A very nice little port with mainly tourist from the daily cruise boats to and from la Cinque Terre. The dock itself is very small, but seems to have a lot of vacancies, at least right now. Saw Mermaid Six there on monday (Nordhaven 76), and the port will great you with many seaside restaurants, but if you want a good local meal i can recommend the "trattorio tre tori", it is not the cheapest place in town, but they serve a good meal in very cosy surroundings, and it is just off the main tourist flow of chaos..... looking forward to your next update - though you are still in Athens I believe - hope you get everything solved...
The ferry route should be on your charts, you’re not going to see a ferry alter course to suit you anywhere in the world lol, you’ll have to steer well clear of those routes. Enjoying the show 😀
Hi Mark (and Fiona), great to be following your high seas progress - learning every day hey. Loving that “kiwi parent/child” banter, sooo familiar. Keep up the good work mate. Cheers A🇳🇿
Thanks Mike for such wonderful videos… I am a Nordhavn dreamer and thought as these boats are issue free but your videos gives a true honest view of nordhavn yachts. They r not free of issues…
Every time a merchant ship changes course it uses more fuel. The skippers are graded on going as straight as possible with no deviations (and use as little fuel as possible). While i understand the wake considerations, he was not too close - when you can toss a beer to them, then their close. You can always ask to have them slow down but they probably wont. It is the smaller boats you have to watch out for that are not run by professionals. (think general aviation pilots against commercial pilots - PS yes an i understand wake turbulence, grin). new subscriber!
Great video as usual, hey any boat always has a few issues, looks like Nord Haven doing thier best , and you are getting to know the boat well ! Brilliant, re motor blower it’s to clear any fumes before starting engines, more an issue with Petrol engines, not sure important for Diesel. Thanks again👍
Hi Mark, I love the videos. It is very interesting, Could you do a bit more info on fuel burn from time to time. As I am looking to see the difference between 2 engine V 1 engine + wing.
Love the latest videos, and yes, 4K looks great on the big screen. Good job. Speaking of good jobs, surprised your water maker supplier didn’t have / use resources in Athens to sort that for you. You will need that water when the larger capacity pump is installed.
Indeed. They struggled to get someone as the sailing season was about to kick off and there was just no one available. Someone flew into Athens last night and meeting us today to sort it.
Hi guys, just like to say thank you for letting me come on your adventure, it’s so awesome also the family banter is great as well. Best wishes Ditch (Townsville Australia)
Great video, really enjoying the uncensored contents !! Your on a steep learning curve in that engine room. I would like a wider passerell. You look as though your walking the plank. Keep the videos coming. Look forward to each one.
Great docking manoeuvre Mark. Well executed!! Just like one of your touchdowns at Heathrow in the triple 😜. Really appreciated your explanation of what was causing the stabiliser issue. It was great to see what the obvious problem was. Wishing you more trouble free motoring going forward. Safe travels 👍😎

Great video again, you guys are naturals in front of the camera. Renee will miss being on board for sure, she seems to enjoy it. Pity that there are so many glitches, but that does happen with new boats. Once fixed it will run perfect for a long time. Understand you are going to the Saronic, so we will follow that very closely, have not been there ourselves, find out if we need to put it on the agenda. As for running single engine, may want to check the gearbox manufacturer does not have a problem with that. Some gearboxes are not intended for windmilling for a prolonged period of time. Would be a pity if the stabilizers get fixed, but then the gear box develops a problem.
Hi guys, glad you’re gonna get the boat fixed it looks fantastic , wonderful to see Renée, back on the boat given her father, some shit which adds to the video. Keep up the good work. Hope they can fix the boat which I believe they will Cliff from Australia. From the big island.
Love watching your journey guys! Thanks for all the sharing! Couple quick thoughts… Blowers should be turned on well before starting engines to eliminate fumes in engine room at least with gas motors? Do they recommend the same for diesel? Also since you have been having all the problems with stabilizer’s, seems like would be a good idea to but valves inline with hydraulic system to shut off in case of leaks?? Just a thought..
I was noticing that when you plugged into power, that cord is pulling sideways on plug. To keep your extention cord from getting damage, the line should be wrapped around pole once then plugged into keep plug from getting damaged.
hi guys Slip lines around both before leaving then mum doesn't have to leave boat bit safer Please remove second keys from motors and store safe place so you have a back up Blowing a light southerly wind here bit cold 9 deg just a ripple on the Hauraki Gulf and blue skies Enjoy the good times drown the bad ones ( red preferred )
Great video as usual . A few mechanicals to deal with now steering . . Certainly problems not pertaining to her being hull number 1. . Good luck on your job Renee 💐 That train statiin look pretty good . I wonder how busy it is on a work day . That pork loin look yummy. . Till next time team take care . Oh . Mark what did you call that ferry captain ?? . 🤔😂. . Bye from NZ 🇳🇿🍻👍twa
This is the BEST comedy series. The checklists are fine but shutting the doors rather than embracing that you're out in nature - really? Boating is all about relaxing and enjoying it. Fiona looks like a frightened rabbit the whole time. And the ferry passing goes the same route everyday ffs - would you expect a 747 to divert for a cessna?
Yip I would it only takes a second and easily achieved. Fiona doing really well and getting more confident everyday. Certainly a big ask suggesting what is quite a challenging adventure. We close the lower Dutch doors but also have them wide open when we are comfortable. I suggest had we had them open all the time there would be comments also!
I'am really disappointed with the amount of technical issues you have on that new ship. Even technicians and ship builders should check and double check their work, before handing it over to their customers. Even if it's still under guarantee !
Was going to ask to see your docking manouvers Mark but then you showed what was a very tight docking in Athens so you are obviously now a dab hand at it ay. All the equipment teething problems are a bit of a worry though, lucky you are in a good place to get them sorted.
There sure is a lot to starting up, porting, and unporting your boat. I think your videos are good because you show the everyday life and even with a fabulous boat like a Nordhavn, problems still exist. I am curious what is involved in having your boat detailed and the cost to have it done. It seems too new to need a detail.
Too many technical problems for a new and expensive boat. It's time for Nordhavn to take matters into his own hands and solve the problems once and for all.
Guys! what the heck is beeping in the wheelhouse at about the 3 minute mark of the video? It would drive me nuts, trying to have a conversation with that in the background!!
"do not use the stabalizers that you paid for and are faulty in order to maintain your warranty" ... thats an attitude from ABT ... got to love the marine industry, typical ... sure, if the seas are calm, if it gets rough you need to use em ...
Always down to the captain of the vesel to make sure the of the safety of all onboad the vesel and any accidents or deaths the captain of the vesel will be held accountable, again when clearing the lines no life jacket when departing and when docking and daughter on swim Platform no preserver
The difference is obvious between TA Shing in Taiwan and the factory in Turkey. Quality difference of craftsmanship between them is staggering. I also noted the interior wood and trim that looks so cheap compared to Taiwanese or Chinese manufactured Nordhavns.
Poor Mark, dominate? He's responsible for a boat that constantly threatens life on board with major problems instantly popping up. He's the person held responsible in maritime law for everything that goes wrong.
If i was her i wouldn't get a job lol. I would stay on there and see the world. But on the positive. You will only have one telling you how to do everything just before you do it. Even if they are wrong. 😆 🤣 😂
Well you can say that but we have missed things when we have not used the checklist. In time we will now everything by heart but at the moment we are being very careful. The brain is pretty full at the moment so a list helps. As an aside you could well get an airplane away without a checklist too but you just don’t! Plenty of dumb boating accidents maybe taking a more careful airline style approach would help. Met a Cunard Captain who used to be a pilot but was made redundant. He introduced the checklist system into Cunard and it has been there ever since.
Gday Mark 🖐 I am a big nordhavn supporter, but think the amount of customer service support you are receiving is nothing but shit!💩This company, at every chance tells us how good their support is? What a joke, they are taking the piss out of you mate! Good luck for the future mate, your luck hopefully is about to change! Fair winds Captain and crew. 👍
I hope I have not given that impression. They have all been pretty amazing. It’s tough when boats are a long way from home port. They are not walking away from any issues, are always available and are meeting all costs.
You would of thought Nordhavn would of had it all sorted by now with the amount of builds. They must of changed brands or suppliers or something. Or cheap.
I really like your show but it’s very difficult to understand your English…that Nzl accent is not easy for European ears 😅 (can only pick up 65% of what you’re saying). Tried the automatic subtitles but that makes it even more messy and confusing. Greetz and stay safe!
Yep so there you go Mark. As you said when talking about the water maker failing, "no point in doing a five minute check" when first launched. So why did Norhaven agree to such a hopeless check? Same goes for the stabilizers, same goes for the steering, same goes for the Genset and every other system on board. As I commented a couple of weeks ago, I said no vessel should take off around the World without having a solid work up without all systems being evaluated over a week or two. Just like one of your planes. They weren't wheeled out of the manufacturing hanger just to do a 4-6 hour evaluation then off to the purchaser. I think you found my comments to be "Too Political for me". Well, hasn't that woke comment now been proven to be incorrect? Infact it was so woke, your vessel has failed on multiple fronts which could have been avoided. You were too scared to ruffle the waters. Too scared to make waves whilst putting your life and your family's life at risk. You keep saying everyone is "wonderful". What do you mean? They have F%%ked up installing some very important life saving equipment . Stop trying to be so nice. They have charged you $millions and yet your trip is being ruined and you are giving them a free pass. That is not how life works. Look, stand up and demand Nordhaven get their act together and give that vessel a proper work out. Don't be scared to declare an emergency. Don't think for a minute the sea is safer. It isn't. It is worse. I am the experienced Commercial Skipper with 45 years experience and I do not want to see any harm come to you and your family. That boat is inherently top heavy and has to rely on stabilizers. Just like one of your planes. If you lost one horizontal stabilizer you and everyone on board would be history. Not good. Same with the boat. It seems very tender. Too little under the water and too much above the water. She has high windage. It is rolling in the slightest of seas. All I ask for your own safety, is to give it at least a month running all systems at full capacity before setting off overseas and make sure to the best of your ability and knowledge that Awanui NZ is a safe ship and that things like the stabilizers have a redundancy. After all, she is the first of her type and unproven. I did very much enjoy the family banter. All the best.
Thanks for your feedback all taken on board. The stabilisation testing done on the boat without stabilisers on show a very healthy margin over that required. The hull after design was checked peer tested by a renowned Dutch Company. I cannot question your experience after 45 years compared to mine but I can assure you I am happy with the safety of the boat. Many Nordhavn’s and similar boats do not have stabilisers fitted, I was happy on one engine as the starboard was shut down as a precautionary measure to save hydraulic oil from spilling into the bilge. If we had to start it we would have. Steering is an issue I agree, we have worked with the manufacturer and am confident I have control of the boat and understand why it is happening…fix on the way. I appreciate your comments, they make me stop and think. I am very happy with the support from Nordhavn and believe me I will speak up if or when necessary. Having said that it is in my nature to work with people and find solutions. I am generally not confrontational. Thanks very much for your best wishes.
Keep going mom , you’re a real legend
Yip she is

Yes we love Renaes yachting channel lol.
No way it will be that!
hi guys Slip lines around both before leaving then mum doesn't have to leave boat bit safer
Please remove second keys from motors and store safe place so you have a back up
Blowing a light southerly wind here bit cold 9 deg just a ripple on the Hauraki Gulf and blue skies
Enjoy the good times drown the bad ones ( red preferred )
Keys gone, and yes slip lines necessary - big gaff but honest
❤❤❤
That plank to get on the boat in port seems pretty dicey. 😮
Yip it is - modifications coming soon
Just as a tip: Stern-to or Med mooring is best done with 4 lines. two straight back and two in a cross from limiting the side movement.
Yip we picked up on that…we do where we can…spaghetti junction
@@AwanuiNZ understand preparation is everything, just like your departure checklist. We always used an arrival checklist as well.
We have a departure list, an after departure list and a pre arrival list. Then once safely moored I do the final checks.
Great video as usual .
A few mechanicals to deal with now steering . . Certainly problems not pertaining to her being hull number 1. .
Good luck on your job Renee 💐
That train statiin look pretty good . I wonder how busy it is on a work day .
That pork loin look yummy. .
Till next time team take care .
Oh . Mark what did you call that ferry captain ?? . 🤔😂. .
Bye from NZ 🇳🇿🍻👍twa
What he was!
So envious of you guys. What’s Renee’s new job, if I may ask? I don’t think I heard it mentioned in the video.
Working for British Airways in HR. We very proud of her!
@@FionaRammell, sounds exciting. Congrats, Renee. 🙂
@@FionaRammell, congrats Renee. Sounds like an exciting adventure coming up! 🙂
I'am really disappointed with the amount of technical issues you have on that new ship. Even technicians and ship builders should check and double check their work, before handing it over to their customers. Even if it's still under guarantee !
How long for though? Sooner or later you have to head off. Maybe we should have stayed closer for a while.
i agree. I am kind of shocked all the problems the boat is presenting.
I totally agree. Even if it is the first of it size, some of the system is not new for just that boat.
Was going to ask to see your docking manouvers Mark but then you showed what was a very tight docking in Athens so you are obviously now a dab hand at it ay. All the equipment teething problems are a bit of a worry though, lucky you are in a good place to get them sorted.
Yip on our way back into Athens to get the last few sorted
definitely prefer solo sailing after watching this. .... 😂
Aah that’s a shame
Does it only sound like that in the video or are the engines quite loud? Doesn't that get annoying when you're on the run for days in a long passage?
Must be in the video as very quiet…or perhaps I am deaf from years of flying aeroplanes
Mark, did you guys film the part where they had to refix the stabilizers?
revealed in next video
There sure is a lot to starting up, porting, and unporting your boat. I think your videos are good because you show the everyday life and even with a fabulous boat like a Nordhavn, problems still exist. I am curious what is involved in having your boat detailed and the cost to have it done. It seems too new to need a detail.
Just to bring it back to speck as not been able to wash it regularly with inadequate water supply - Nordhavn covering cost
do you use any fuel additives like "fuel doctor" ? or fuel polishing should be able to fix it all?
Not at the moment no. We can fuel polish but have not been. Keen to get doing that.
56:37 Ah hah, his plan worked, the power of the pea.
Haha
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
Bedankt
Nagging the captain, mutiny.
Haha…
ok, so, Fiona didn't like Kos ? :)
Not sure we at the bottom of that yet! May never be
Mark what weather app are you using?
Hey thanks so much for the positive feedback we love making each episode. Inuse Predict Wind
@@AwanuiNZ Just found that app it's awesome. Keep up the great work👍
We will
Hi guys why is the engine operation connected to the stabilizer safe travels
PTO on starboard engine drives hydraulic pump…was spewing out of seal when engine running. Once stopped only slow leak.
No feta in the Greek salad. Greek salad; lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, olives and feta with olive oil and Greek oregano.
There was feta by the time it was finished……have not seen any lettuce in them over here
Too many technical problems for a new and expensive boat. It's time for Nordhavn to take matters into his own hands and solve the problems once and for all.
It’s happening as we speak
What a great way to retire!
Always been an active relaxer so needed something to keep me busy
These videos are so much better when on mute!!!
Excellent you know what to do then
Guys! what the heck is beeping in the wheelhouse at about the 3 minute mark of the video? It would drive me nuts, trying to have a conversation with that in the background!!
Just a warning I had not cancelled!
wondering what your speed is on one engine and your RPMs ?
1500 rpm - 7kts
"do not use the stabalizers that you paid for and are faulty in order to maintain your warranty" ... thats an attitude from ABT ... got to love the marine industry, typical ... sure, if the seas are calm, if it gets rough you need to use em ...
Yip
Sad, noticed for days: running engine corrupts audio. :(
Yip
Butter is good for you - ignore the advice that says otherwise!
Absolutely!1 Happens to taste great too
Always down to the captain of the vesel to make sure the of the safety of all onboad the vesel and any accidents or deaths the captain of the vesel will be held accountable, again when clearing the lines no life jacket when departing and when docking and daughter on swim Platform no preserver
I hear you
The difference is obvious between TA Shing in Taiwan and the factory in Turkey.
Quality difference of craftsmanship between them is staggering.
I also noted the interior wood and trim that looks so cheap compared to Taiwanese or Chinese manufactured Nordhavns.
Don’t agree re craftmanship at all. We love the timber panelling but will check out some other Nordhavn’s to see what I think
Poor Mark, dominate? He's responsible for a boat that constantly threatens life on board with major problems instantly popping up. He's the person held responsible in maritime law for everything that goes wrong.
Wow someone on my side!
The Turks, not the Greeks stored gun powder in the temple that subsequently blew up.
Aah thank you so much
If i was her i wouldn't get a job lol.
I would stay on there and see the world.
But on the positive.
You will only have one telling you how to do everything just before you do it. Even if they are wrong. 😆 🤣 😂
Mmmmm… maybe I not respond to this!
@@AwanuiNZ 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 ❤
Bucketfu Mark?
Weather data in all the different forecast stations is the same source - so no real difference just interpretation of the data.
Yip we average it out but consider the worst
How does a Greek speaker that speaks English go with NZ vowels?
Not well
The stabilizer issue is ridiculous
Almost there now
Get a wee spreader bar for lifting the tender.
Why?
@@AwanuiNZ It will keep chains or strops clear of the steering and give a nice clear lift.
30mtrs away
?
Nice that these guys figured out why the cylinders keep failing.
I reckon
As if an airplane is heading out! What a fuss….
Even more “fuss” if an important check is missed and stuff gets broken…or worse!
Good boat ,built in wrong country
You would of thought Nordhavn would of had it all sorted by now with the amount of builds.
They must of changed brands or suppliers or something.
Or cheap.
lol welcome to the rock and roll of displacement motoring ? , waiting for a following sea to convert you to a born again christian ?
Absolutely
Gosh kids are rude
You think?
I really like your show but it’s very difficult to understand your English…that Nzl accent is not easy for European ears 😅 (can only pick up 65% of what you’re saying). Tried the automatic subtitles but that makes it even more messy and confusing. Greetz and stay safe!
Ok I will try to slowdown my talking. Sometimes I think I already talk to slow.
Yep,,,,, luv the adult kids,,,,, yep us olds,,,,, 😊 “just be you” !!! 👍🎉👍🌟⛴️🌟🐨
Oh I will!
