Honestly, I went from a 2008 Prius to a 2018 chr premium and I’m quite happy with my choice. While I do miss the great backup camera from the Prius the visibility issues some people are having is because they’re not using their mirrors properly (you’re NOT supposed to turn around to backup! I drove a school bus 🚌 for 6 yrs lol). This vehicle is sharp, fun to drive, and good on gas! I love my CHR
I bought this car last Dec. broken it in 20k now and it's fast as heck for a 4 banger. Ran into problem tho battery w dead cell made it slow but fixed now. It's on great platform chassis runs awesome but it could hv been better. I heard in Australia and Canada they hv chr's with all wheel drive and super chargers that boost hp to 180hp. I want all wheel drive, charger, moonroof & fog lamps
Thanx for the vid. Great to see your point of view. I think you have higher standards when it comes to cars. I am European. I bought a C-HR and it’s just great! It’s a 1.8 hybrid with more luxury you will ever need. Only things missing are leather interior and heated steering wheel. Oh, and no button 2 open and close the tailgate. It has a Touch 2 screen though, a JBL system with sub, blind spot monitor, park assist, heated seats and so much more. Got 2 kids (17 and 19) and all works just fine. The car is big enough for us. Good quality car and really fun and easy to drive😃
One thing you did not mention was its driving dynamics. It is built on the new global platform (like the new Prius and Camry), and it actually handles very nicely. My son chose this over all of the other cars he tested in June 2017, and uses it to commute back and forth to college. The back seat is kind of dark and depressing, but this car was aimed at people like my son. Single, young, no family yet, so the back seat wasnt a big issue. As far as power is concerned, its enough if you dont play Johnny street racer. Its as quick (or slow) as most others in this segment.
Sat in one in the showroom out of curiosity when I was car shopping a few months back (was there to check out the new Camry), and really didn't like how dark and claustrophobic it felt inside. Materials were on the cheaper side, even in this segment, and the backup cam really feels like an afterthought (just like no satnav). Fun fact, the one in the showroom was built in Turkey.
This vehicle does not ride loud. I think the Rav4 drives louder and rougher. I have a 19, so they made some good upgrades. I think it feels like a baby highlander as far a quality.
Thanks for the video, styling is neat and unique, as you said Toyota is saving money for the cost of the vehicle with this build. Where buttons on remote to release trunk, headlights are not LED or HID, the option for AWD, is a bummer but for the cost can’t really beat that. Thanks for the review, thoughts and comments.
These CHRs handles the snow real well. Really good gas mileage I get 36 highway, 30 city. This guy isn't telling the truth. This is a terrible review. Not a lot a power is the only thing thing that can be said about this car that isn't good. If you not trying to race.. . everything about these CHRs are nothing but good cars all around. Oh yea they are toyotas therefore extremely dependable cars. Forget this guy.
The rearview camera is up there because the stock radio is removable and can be replaced with a double din. I've heard this was originally designed as a Scion, so that makes a lot of sense. (Edit: Yeah, just got to the point in the video where you mentioned that, lol) I just finally saw one on the road yesterday and was intrigued by it. It's definitely a very interesting video. I hope we get more of things like this, it seems every time you get a different standout design that they get cancelled within a handful of years. Not everyone wants a sedan or soccer mom Crossover. That being said, I hope they eventually add more options, like AWD or a turbo charged engine.
Love the design! I wanted it so bad until I realized no AWD and weak engine. Hate the poor visibility in the back window (I'm missing the backing up gene, so rely on that window to back up). So sad!
@Everyman Driver , Dave how was it in the snow? I know its not AWD, but did it have any issues driving in that weather? was is equipped with winter tires?
Nice video! If you put a compact refrigerator in your car for transport you need to keep it upright. Coolant inside the unit is not supposed to be positioned sideways or upside down.
The CHR is full of odd choices, the rear camera is placed in the mirror so if you change the double din radio you still have a camera. Toyota makes hybrid and AWD versions of the CHR but they’re not available here in the US or Canada.
I have an HRV fwd manual which I love and my gf has the CX3 awd auto which is also great. I think they are both much better than the CHR because for some reason it's so much heavier than anything in its class (3300lbs vs HRV 2900lbs and CX3 2800lbs), lack of transmission options, lack of awd options, and lack of interior/cargo space. CX3 is tiny inside which is its only major flaw IMO but it is still bigger than the CHR in total cargo volume and i'll bet it drives way better too. Also, I've been getting 32mpg average in mixed driving in my HRV and my gf gets 27mpg with her CX3.
Good review, I appreciate your thoroughness. But I agree with others: lack of motor, awd, and transmission options, bad infotainment, and lack of sunroof takes it off my list.
“My kids can’t reach the handle on the rear doors! 😭) Okay? Then just stick with your boring Buick Encore or Chevy Trax 😜 I always loved the CH-R, guess it’s just too quirky for some and that just fine by me! :)
It's a perfect car for a single person or a couple, if you don't live in an area with a lot of hills you'll get 25-30mpg just in the city easy, around 35 highway, I don't understand wtf you guys need more power for? I race motorcycles on a racetrack and trust me the power this car has is more than enough for just driving around, very reliable, handles great and is very stable on high speeds, you guys trying to drag race with a crossover?
You guys are short changed I think. Reverse camera is in the main head unit display. We have AWD option here in Australia. And we did have a manual option too, gone now with recent update, shame. I personally love the car. Different, great to drive, good seating. Just be aware of the big “C” pillars.
A reminder about the “infotainment system”, the car was originally a Scion and with the demise went R&D for tech. They kept the double DIN slot because the target audience would’ve pulled it for an aftermarket unit that has Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Very low spec vehicle for the safety tech it offers.
LOVE The way this thing looks. Easily the coolest looking car in its class. Looks distinctive and that's a big plus where all the others in its class blend in. The interior is very cool looking also I like how the dash turns towards the driver and how the steering wheel is designed. Love the color with the contrasting white roof (new Camry has contrasting black painted roof). Very cool car. Wonder what it would be like with a turbo engine and manual.
There is an AWD version in this car as it’s available here in the UK and also a a 143 bhp engine version. Biggest problem with this car is the rear visabilty. As for six year olds opening doors, just open the door for your kids, which your pretty much have to do for small children anyway as you also have make sure they have there seat belts clicked in properly. Little bug bears in my opinion.
I am torn on this. I do like the styling direction on the exterior and I do believe that it will be a strong seller for the target demographic (commuters/ 20-30 somethings with no kids etc) . At about 20 to 40% of the limit which many commuters do, the C-HR's drive-train will not really be noticed as lacking.
It looks great, very futuristic, aimed at a younger audience with no kids or who don't complaint. I live in SoCal so AWD is not worth it and also leather. I love the door handles and it makes the car look like a coupe which I love and everyone's does because of the youthness it represent. Power is bad, yes, but for me it will be a commuter, no android car play, well I don't care since android and apple car play is boring, not wireless and I'll I do is stream spotify via bluetooth. No LEDs, just install some HIDs in those projectors and it would look factory.
Great review bro, I have driven toyota's in the past and they are very reliable.. beautiful snowy background..lol. Please do a review on the new 2018 Range Rover VELAR, thanks
Cliff Simms fuel economy will always be worse in colder weather they say in temperatures below 30 degrees you lose up to 22 percent fuel economy in city driving conditions(stop and go traffic).
The RAV4 was soooooo much more value than this budget CHR ... especially with $3000 mfr rebate on 2017 RAV4 model. I got a 2017 RAV4 XLE AWD for about the same price as the CHR XLE. And the RAV4 XLE comes with bigger engine, much more room, sunroof, fog lights, auto lift gate, keyless entry, AWD, automatic (i.e. no CVT) transmission, proper rear view camera, no big blind spot (like the CHR), and a ton of safety features (eg. radar cruise control) ... The CHR is a novelty with a high price tag. That's why you don't see too many on the road. It can be a real alternative when the price comes down significantly.
to be fair the vehicle was designed for europe...the european market are filled with small cuvs and hatches with very expressive designs. plus, toyota knew scion was getting the boot long before the chr was launched. sadly though we're the only market without the turbo engine, manual, hybrid and awd options the rest of the world gets. im sure toyota is testing whether the design is a hit first before they give the additional options.
I wish they would bring over the hybrid variant, would likely be quieter and have better performance ( that electric torque could really help this thing especially for commuting), and it would fix that fuel economy problem. There aren't a lot of options for small hybrids (Prius C is an option but it's econobox cheap in terms of interior quality). Also, the reason the center stack is like that is because they're using the old scion head unit which is why the camera isn't in it. I think that's the biggest limitation of this vehicle is that it is Scion spec and I feel it just holds it back. If this vehicle had actual trim levels and used a Toyota head unit (similar to that in the corolla) and offered a variety of options, it would be a good competitor in the class, but sadly that's just not the case. This is pretty much how I feel about the corolla iM too.
i think its a good looking car and it was on my list of vehicles i was considering, but i live in the northeast and lack of AWD made me go with an HR-V
Reverse camera in mirror must be something to do with regulations, in Uk the camera view is shown on the infotainment screen? Also engines in Uk are 1.2T FWD, 1.2T FWD CVT, 1.2T AWD CVT and 1.8 hybrid.
Weird looking car....in a good way. Your tester color, the turquoise-ish color, looks amazing. Good body lines, nice fat rear fenders, nice two tone option. Overall, great looking little car. Engine needs a little more beef to match that "sporty" design. And maybe introduce a manual after they beef up that engine.
NO awd, NO sunroof, NO leather, NO sirius/xm = NO SALE. I live in New England and there is a reason you see NONE of these on the road. What the hell was Toyota thinking??
Great review Dave! However, Toyota trashed this vehicle. This is a horrible model by Toyota. No AWD, no Google auto, no panoramic sunroof and etc. Looks like Hyundai set the standard for auto industry from now on.
The display is made to be easily upgrade with an aftermarket one. That`s part of the old Scion root where that car comes from. That`s also why the rearview camera is in the rearview mirror as well.
Nice Review! It's stylish, but Under-Powered. My '79 Malibu had an AM radio. (Before the Alpine CD deck) As Android Auto is cool. (My phone is too old to download the App) My '10 4Runner had a CD deck, XM, & the same Rear View Mirror screen, which I enjoyed. I really do like the looks. What bothers me... Toyota, Hey!, you know how to make this formula work. You had a nice run at cars like MR2 & the pop-up head lamp: '86 Corolla. Cars that has some style, some ZIP!, and that Reliability of a solid little car that is fairly good at everything it was intended to be. Would the Solara coupe, or convertible be included? What I think this car should be.... is the old Matrix S AWD mechanics with this cool stylish look.
I drove one of these as a loaner from the Toyota dealer. I couldn't figure out what it's supposed to be. It's not an SUV, no AWD, and it doesn't look like a car. Visibility out the rear and sides is terrible, it's very sluggish, NAV is not available and overall it just makes no sense to me.
The white roof is a godsend in a hot summer day when you're parked in the sun. I have an 08 Toyota FJ it's tan with white roof and I bet it's 30° cooler on a 90° hot summer day on the inside...as compared to a darker color car roof.
The exterior looks really nice and sporty. The design is more of that of a coupe on stilts, so it’s not going to be as practical as it’s more boxy rivals with higher roof lines. Also the interior isn’t that sporty, so it’s design is a little confused, it’s trying to be too many things.
Great review. Have seen a few on the road. But I think this car is for single/young pple. Not family friendly at all. Toyota really needs to step up their game
This Car is so awesome ☺❤👍 But I miss a Panorama Sunroof or a normal Sunroof and a center armrest in the Backseats. Here in Europe/Germany the Hybrid has only 122Hp 😐😕 In the US it has 144Hp ☺👍 Why Toyota is done it? A tuned C-HR is so cool as well 😊👌 Greetings ✌
I'm digging the comment segment for the video but it seemed a little long. Still though its nice to see the viewers opinions come thought in a video. Also keep the child seat. I don't think anyone else does that when reviewing cars and it is something that parents will appreciate.
I actually like how the car looks and was interested in a possible purchase based on its looks but after seeing several reviews I will have to remove it from my list. Relatively poor gas mileage, poor rear visibility and poor backup cam implementation, limited extra features. Keep up the great work in you reviews, I always look for yours.
I think you have to be realistic when you buy a non-turbo 2.0L 4cylinder. I’ve seen so many people do reviews of this vehicle and complain about lack off power what do you expect with an engine with those specs. It’s not going to be anything like driving a sports car. It’s a good looking little car. I own this vehicle and I can honestly say this is not a good car for a family it’s more designed around the drivers experience not so much the passengers. It’s a fun car to own and more for city dwellers I would not consider this by any means an off road vehicle. I have no problem with visibility and actually I’ve ridden in the backseat of mine before and it’s comfortable. This is the kind of car you want if you want something that looks different amazing quality and you need a little bit more space than a two door coupe. You rarely see these on the road that’s true, but I actually like that.
I just saw the 2021 and I love the style and sporty look of this car. I am definitely Not a fan of Toyota! It should have a sunroof also. I do wish there was an American made car that has this look. I was checking into the Ford car (yes I'm a woman and don't really know all the names of Every car...lol) that looks similar to this one. Thanks for the video!
This car is made for either a single person or a couple. Not suited for a family with kids and to load up all the luggage is what I’m seeing here in the comments. You see how small it is you can’t expect to put all your junk in the trunk and carry all the kids. What you need is like a RAV4 or Highlander. I love my CHR I’m single no kids I’m a pilot and it’s perfect for my suitcases.
Hopefully Toyota revises this car big time before the next big Redesign. I know this was meant for scion in the beginning but they need to make big changes! Awd, a better infotainment system. And leather and other goodies?
Style is subjective but I think it's cool. I've seen many comments about the rear door handle being too high for children to reach. I doubt that Toyota is targeting families with this model. It's called Coupe High Rider. Coupes aren't known for being family friendly. This should do well with it's intended audience. I do think that Toyota is losing some sales because of their choice to leave out Apple Car play and Android Auto, especially in this segment.
This car has so much hate. But still good for me👍 im small single young a common commuter and no kids 👍
CHR 2018, genuine front and rear break pad kit with shim. Front router. $300 CAD. Toronto
For a single person ,it is a perfect car.
Great Review !!! So glad you included BOTH Pros and Cons
Toyota needs to revisit this model and make some needed corrections/improvements
Im single,no kids and i love mine.
Are u still single?)
My CHR has 4 wheel drive and a different engine. In sport mode it’s fast enough and has great safety features. UK spec.
One thing you did not mention was its driving dynamics. It is built on the new global platform (like the new Prius and Camry), and it actually handles very nicely. Materials were on the cheaper side, even in this segment, and the backup cam really feels like an afterthought (just like no satnav).
Fun fact, the one in the showroom was built in Turkey.
I saw it on a street. It is great looking. Really stands out of the crowd.
This vehicle does not ride loud. I think the Rav4 drives louder and rougher. I have a 19, so they made some good upgrades. I think it feels like a baby highlander as far a quality.

Would have been really good to see how the car actually performed in the snow!!!
These CHRs handles the snow real well. Really good gas mileage I get 36 highway, 30 city. This guy isn't telling the truth. This is a terrible review. i have a US 2021 and find the review lacking in many ways. i love my chr.

I've seen tons of these on the road already
Enjoyed that comment feedback segment! Do more! Great review as always!
Why in the world do you not have more subscribers with these high quality videos?
great video, im torn between the Toyota CHR / The Ford Escape/ and the Mitisbusi Outlander Sport, which of these 3 vehicles u like the most?
@Everyman Driver , Dave how was it in the snow? I know its not AWD, but did it have any issues driving in that weather? was is equipped with winter tires?
I came here because I thought he was going to review it in snow driving. Glad I’m not the only one with that question 👍🏽
Looks pretty futuristic specially in black/gray/dark colors, like if the desing was inspired in a Blade Runner type flick..

It's a perfect car for a single person or a couple, if you don't live in an area with a lot of hills you'll get 25-30mpg just in the city easy, around 35 highway, I don't understand wtf you guys need more power for? I love this style
This is aimed at the young crowd. Power should be sufficient- Had 84 hp in HS and college and that was more than sufficient.
Thank goodness that green colour has been deep-sixed for 2019 - 1950s kitchen cabinets much?
This car looks great though! Ok it's slow, but any comment about the handling dynamics? Apparently it was engineered by a race car driver at toyota
This car is interesting to me. Not sure if it's enough to get me to buy it but I'd definitely get this over the hrv.
I am not a fan of those two vehicles.. but I'd rather get this over hrv either
Wait for the 2019 IM should have more power and look way better.
I am an avid Toyota fan, I have only owned Toyotas for the past 26 years. I have yet to see a C-HR in person, I have no idea why, Colorado here.
You guys are short changed I think. Reverse camera is in the main head unit display. We have AWD option here in Australia. And we did have a manual option too, gone now with recent update, shame. Toyota4Life nice name kkkkk
Come on man. Have some guts. I like Toyota cars but this one.
Would consider this if we had the EU versions, they get options like AWD, Hybrid, and a turbo engine
There is an AWD version in this car as it’s available here in the UK and also a a 143 bhp engine version. Biggest problem with this car is the rear visabilty. Needs a sunroof and more power
Q- Bert rav4
It only sold well in Japan because they have 1.2L turbo AWD model.
Dave, your usual good work.Your tact with it's shortcomings is great too.
I hate cost cutting. I want all my costs. But then again it the extras that usually break first.
It looks great, very futuristic, aimed at a younger audience with no kids or who don't complaint. I live in SoCal so AWD is not worth it and also leather. Great review bro, I have driven toyota's in the past and they are very reliable.. beautiful snowy background..lol. Please do a review on the new 2018 Range Rover VELAR, thanks
They should have put a turbo and awd in it to compete with the juke.
Still a great show Dave. Keep it up. You are right, this car is weak, but then so is the HR-V.
Probably a safe 1st car for a kid...if you make sure all the safety gear is on board...hope it appeals to someone!
It comes standard with Toyotas safety-P package.
It’s fascinating to see Japan moving into SUV style cars.
Was the fuel economy calculated during the snowy conditions ?
Cliff Simms fuel economy will always be worse in colder weather they say in temperatures below 30 degrees you lose up to 22 percent fuel economy in city driving conditions(stop and go traffic).

The iM has the backup camera in the head unit. Its the same unit used in the CHR, so I dont know why they put it in the mirror.
Backup cam display up high forcing you to check peripherals. So you not staring down at a screen via tunnel vision and seeing shyte.
You don't need AWD if you know don't go off road! Power is adequate for "rush hour" traffic with average speed is 15 mph.!
i think its a good looking car and it was on my list of vehicles i was considering, but i live in the northeast and lack of AWD made me go with an HR-V
Strange in North America there is no option AWD. In Europe and Australia there is AWD

You have a very good radio voice, do you do radio too?
I love my Ch-R perfect for me
I really like the car until I found out it's not coming all wheel drive and roll Iowa that is needed
Lol I really like these. I'm looking at buying one. Either that or the new Corolla .
Did u get one??? I just bought a white 2020 and so far enjoy it. I’m in Buffalo NY do really waiting to see how it preforms in snow
Panoramic sun roof and manual transmission would be a good place to start.
I love how everyone keep saying a 20,000 + car is economical.
Can you please test the C-HR on snow? light off road please? there is 0 videos about its AWD capability.
FWD only
ah in my country we have AWD version
Looks a lot better than the boring HR-V. But my next car will probably be the CR-V.
Dave, the answer to your question is...They lost the plot..
NO awd, NO sunroof, NO leather, NO sirius/xm = NO SALE. I live in New England and there is a reason you see NONE of these on the road. What the hell was Toyota thinking??
I was ready to buy until they announced the NA model would not have AWD, and there's no options such as a moon roof.
I think I'll stick to my RAV4 until this gets some upgrades.
Great review Dave! However, Toyota trashed this vehicle. This is a horrible model by Toyota. No AWD, no Google auto, no panoramic sunroof and etc. Looks like Hyundai set the standard for auto industry from now on.
Daniel Sobirov also no navigation.
(My phone is too old to download the App)
My '10 4Runner had a CD deck, XM, & the same Rear View Mirror screen, which I enjoyed.
Great review dave Ericsson.
No thank you. I’ll stick with my Subaru crosstrek. I do recommend turning off the ac before turning off the vehicle.
Any new Fiats coming out? Haven’t heard of them for a while :)!
Why did the venza not sell in comparison to ppl liking this?
I guess if you want to stand out, get the R Code paint color.
The only good reviews, come from Toyota Motors itself.
What only 29MPG w/ FWD. I just got a Rogue Sport last year w/ AWD and I get anywhere from 24-30MPG depending on my driving.
Hows ur armwrestling?
I love the style but the low power, no 4WD and no apple car play is not ideal. Maybe 2nd generation will bring a much updated model.
yes, the rear door handles were a deal breaker, I have a tall 7 year old, but she still can't open it.
It’s a beautiful car in terms of design but it needs more things inside and horsepower.
