I own a 2019 model and it gets me where I need to go it is definitely a great car to commute in, just a heads up for the people in the used car market looking for one of these cool looking cars. I don’t mean to turn anyone off but I work for toyota and I see these at the service center all the time for transmission issues, typically the mileage is anywhere from 55k to 80k. I was hoping Toyotas version of the CVT would be it, but sadly it’s not. We currently have 4 CHRs in the service with transmission issues, but the good news is that the they hold their trade in value very well.
My retired father just ordered 2022 Toyota CH-R Limited model, it is coming from Japan in little less than 2 months. He also considered HRV from Honda but chose to go with CH-R. We are in Ontario, Canada and final price out the door for this thing was $36,000 CDN.
This CVT Transmission had issues when the design was new. Toyota has solved this. Never buy the first of anything... let someone else take that gamble.
Thanks for the review. My niece just brought a fully loaded 2018 and she loves it. Heck I was very impressed too. Moved up from her 2012 Yaris that was very reliable.
Everytime Scotty talks about Kias I wonder if I have just been really Lucky. My Forte from 2010 has nearly 180,000 miles on it and it's still doing well. I change oil religiously and drive it conservatively but this thing is doing great. It gets great gas mileage and has been a reliable car since I got it with only 14000 miles on it 8 years ago. I drive a lot because of what I do but it's a comfortable car that gets me from point A to point B.

I'm so excited you reviewed the C-HR. I just bought one in October and I love it! And I bought a Toyota because I've been watching your videos Scotty. I had a 2018 Ford EcoSport and I liked it okay, but it was already coming apart in a couple of areas in the dashboard and it road like a bucket of bolts. I had driven a 2006 Ford Fusion for 12 years before that and loved it, so went back to Ford for that reason. I was just excited to get the new technology in a car and bought the EcoSport on the spot! But as the story goes, regretted it a bit as time went on. I was thinking of trading or selling and was watching car videos when I came across you. So glad I did! I was able to sell my EcoSport for more than I owed and turned around and bought the C-HR. I had never seen one before and fell in love. My husband went over it with a fine toothed comb and said "buy it." So I did! Loving it!! Thanks Scotty! Now I'm hooked on your videos and believe I will be a Toyota customer from now on. Oh, and by the way, welcome to Tennessee! We live in Columbia, just south of Nashville, so not too far from you!
@@moeanthony9308 Well, bucket of bolts is probably unfair. It was fine around town and I liked the size of it. Horrible on the highway though, and that's where the "bucket of bolts" comes in. Lol! But the quality of the C-HR is so much better for the same price. Also, I averaged 19 MPG around town in the EcoSport and with the C-HR, even not broken in yet, I am getting 25 to 26 in town. So the difference all around in quality of the build and mpg is pretty drastic to me, for vehicles in the same category and price range.
I have a 2020 CHR since new and currently at 12k miles. Getting 28.4 mpg city, very good gas mileage. Comfortable. Only issues, i feel claustrophobic sitting at the back due to the big side pillars and recently making a clunking noise when shift to reverse. Otherwise a sporty looking, fairly decent and reliable car.
@@BrandonEht I drove my mom's twice when she had it and it honestly felt about the same as my '89 Camry 4-cylinder automatic when it came to the acceleration but it also somehow at times felt faster by a significant amount
Another Toyota a lot of people don't know about-- the Avalon. One of my best friends recently bought one. It steps into Lexus territory and he loves it. I would like to see you review one. It's a nice ride.
Hey Scotty, been a fan for a while. I bought 2018 CH-R in November. 20k at 11,000 miles. I absolutely love it, rides great and it launches when you want it to. I live it! Hope to keep it for a ling time!
7:56 "Play rival insurance companies against each other." Absolutely! I have a clean record with no claims for decades (except when I accidentally hit a deer running across a freeway at 11:00 PM, but I told my insurance in that incident that I cannot be held liable for the criminal acts of a third party-- that maniac deer was suicidal!), so whenever my insurance company raises my rates, I get quotes from other insurance companies and tell my swine carrier to beat their competitor's rates or I'm dropping their coverage. Works great! Remember, loyalty to a brand or corporation is an irrational sucker's game.
I’ve had my 2019 C HR for two years, it is everything I expected, and the gas mileage mostly commuting is 32 mpg, and on a long trip more than 35. However, mine was made in Turkey, not Japan. Was a little nervous about that, but fit and finish is great and it’s been defect free. Also the adaptive cruise control, lane departure and collision avoidance systems are not intrusive but work flawlessly. If you are looking for a practical well made economical car give it a look. Toyota is coming out with the Corolla cross over so they may not continue this model much longer…
⭐if anyone wants to know if a CHR can handle mountain roads im here to say YES!! And beautifully! My 2018 CHR was made in Turkey. I absolutely 💯 adore it!
Lol! I'm an older lady driving one in Tennessee. Must be that "makes me feel younger" thing. Or the fact that the kids are grown and gone and we no longer need the mini van or big SUV. And it's fun!
Love my CH-R. My 2nd and 3rd cars made me lose interest in cars bc they were so basic and boring. Getting a CH-R made me appreciate cars all over again. Put a cargo basket on mine and a few mods, I get compliments and looks on it all the time. Living in MD, it also drives well with our mid-east coast weather. I say test drive one bud!
@@CHAOS3RDEYE Would you say there's enough trunk space for a sub box? I don't carry much so I'm ok if lost space for it. If need be, I can drop the seats to carry stuff lol
My 2021 C-HR got 36.6 miles per US gallon (6.43 liters per 100 kms.) during its first year (6600 miles) of summer driving with AC and winter driving with winter tires.
Gotta disagree with Scotty about the C-HR being 'zippy'; I like how they look so I test drove one but was shocked how slow they were, even compared to my ancient Corolla! I would go as far as say they're dangerously slow if you're getting on the highway using a short on-ramp! Most tests I saw bear this out and indicate a 0-60 time in the 11 second range, which is painfully slow. Hope Toyota gives it the hybrid powertrain that the Lexus version of the same platform (i.e. the Lexus UX) has, which would also give it AWD and make it, by far, the pick of the sub-compact SUV category imo.
@@sammyt3514 Understandable. Corolla Hatchback's are not for everyone's cup of tea. I like mine, but rear visibility is awful. What care are you most interested in? A Lexus?
@@lukeywalsh The Corolla, whether the hatchback or the sedan, are fine cars but they are not the type of car I'm looking for; my next car will probably be a sub-compact SUV.
I’ve just bought a Toyota ch-r. I used to drive a Lincoln LS (also a hidden gem of a car) back in the early 2000s. All I have to say is the CH-r sort of reminds me of my LS, it makes me feel like my old self when I drive it.

I didn't know about the gear codes, but I know that the 2020 C-HR XLE that we bought is the slowest vehicle during takeoff that I've ever driven in my life.
I was car shopping with my sister literally yesterday and we were looking at one of these but she eventually ended up getting a 2021 Corolla. A little less sporty looking but seemed more practical for her uses.
I also bough a 2018 CH-R two months ago. Just did 300 miles/~500 km yesterday in Switzerland 66 MPG/4,3 litre, 3 people AC running (88F/31C here), hills and valleys, up and down with mixed highways and city drive. Highway-only drive gives 54 MPG/5.2 litre with 80 MPH/130kmh cursing speed. It likes 100-110 km/h the most of course.
Yeah that's kind of weird, since mine is blue, I just assumed the interior was meant to match the exterior, they really need to change that depending on the color of the vehicle
I was under the impression it came from Turkey, and for this reason I say no thanks. Do some research on the history of turkeys rulers. Maybe 2020 went back to Japan, happy to hear.
I bought today a 2018 Toyota C HR for $14,000 with 70,000 miles. It was price 17,500 but I used the Scotty's of doing business. It was in a Ford Dealership which they don't care about Toyotas. If it was a Toyota Dealership I believe I would be charged 20k. Ford only cares of Ford or this Toyota I bought is a lemon. I will see how it runs Scotty. Took your advise Scotty. Peace out.
The Telluride has won the best large suv a few years running. The kia stinger has won several awards for safety and best sedan in it's class. The optimawhich is now the k5 has won sedan of the year several times. Kia makes amazing vehicles. I am not a fanboy of any brand. My wife and I have matching 2020 kia stinger gt1, we have a 2006 dodge grand caravan, 2012 ford expedition, a 2019 tahoe and a 2006 dodge magnum rt. Our house looks like a car lot lol. I have not had a single issue with non of my vehicles. The key to it, is take care of your vehicles. Oil changes on time and just simple maintenance will go a long way.
My 2021 C-HR came off the same assembly line one month after the car featured in this video. It has the same K114 CVT transmission as listed on the door sticker. The so called launch gear is definitely present in the Aisin K120 CVT, but I find no proof anywhere that the launch gear is present in the K114. Wikipedia notes that C-HR with K120 do exist in some world markets. The Corolla Hatchback does have the launch gear.
True. I have only 27k miles on my 2018 CHR XLE (Turkey - made with K114 CVT) - at 30k miles this will get a transmission fluid change (not flush) and filter change. My 2018 RAV4 XLE (former rental/used) is my daily driver (84k miles).
When I was shopping for a new vehicle I had narrowed it down to the CH-R, Carolla hatchback, or the Mazda CX-3. It’s just my daughter and I so I don’t need a lot of space. Living in Canada, and it being icy and snowy 7 months of the year I preferred awd. All these vehicles are made in Japan so it was a tough choice. I also preferred a traditional transmission, not a cvt. So the CX-3 was the winner. I’m very happy with it.
It's strange, after watching Scotty for quite a while now I find it annoying when he's not the one test driving the vehicle and he's in the passenger seat. 😆
Scotty, I'm confused. All I hear about is that the CHR has NO acceleration and it's a strain passing cars on the highway. Could you elaborate on this a bit further? Thanks from Toronto!
Just purchased a 2018 chr and I'm actually loving it besides the radio not having android auto. I'm a softball dad so needed the extra room for softball equipment plus good gas milage for all the traveling I do during season
Hyundai/kias CVT are still better when it comes to not feeling like a CVT!!! No launch gear but they have the first CVT in a compact car with a chain driven CVT not a steel belt! So more durable and they shift just like a traditional automatic. No other manufacturer has been the same at mimicking shifts *yet* like Hyundai/kia. Reliability is still a thing we have to look at in the coming years.
@@charlesjackson1700 I’ve never had that experience nor have many others that I’ve known. Even my aunts 2015 optima with the infamous theta 2.4 theta 2 GDi which is known for blowing up around 70-90k or later 100-140k and sometimes you can get 200k doesnt even have those issues 😆 and she had over 120k last time I saw her and that was over a year ago. They aren’t oil burners. The theta 2 Gdi DOES have some oil consumption issues I’ll give you that but it’s a flawed engine from the start and that’s why they eventually give everyone free lifetime replacements after the “product improvement” has been conducted. So.... it’s really not an issue when they got you covered.
@UCotQKM2ANvT8wYlAjdqwGcw even my local dealer said they’ve seen cars with over 200k miles get approved for engine outs for free... it’s under lawsuit which is why they extended it to a lifetime “warranty” it’s part of a class action lawsuit. You should look into it more you clearly don’t understand it. Most all dealers immediately get them approved fast in many cases the owner didn’t take care of it and oil sludge is present and yet they still get approved. Yes there are instances where they denied them but typically they don’t get denied and if so go to other dealers. Hyundai dealers and service isn’t known to be the best so you have to be firm if they even think about not trying to get it approved. Scotty somewhat praises Hyundai/Kia and then sometimes bashes them saying they don’t last it’s inconsistent. No they don’t “fall apart” right after 100k some have their issues and many see well past 200k and even into 400k.
@UCotQKM2ANvT8wYlAjdqwGcw I have a friend that has a 2011 Kia Sorento (base) and it currently has 193k miles and only thing that went wrong was a stupid door handle that failed on the left rear door which they were known for. Other than that still runs solid. Even my moms 2007 Toyota Corolla (a very very awesome reliable car) has more quality issues and has been cared for. Paint is starting to chip mostly on the hood which even my 2006 Pontiac G6 didn’t even do. No car is perfect
This car is slow, underpowered, has poor gas mileage, has bad blind spots, and small cargo. You're better off getting the Corolla instead. The C-HR doesn't have the launch gear. Scotty is wrong.

Have you added the Arduino/CANBUS mod to yours - I have. Stays in Sport Mode.
My dad just helped me buy this car as a graduation gift for me and I’m picking it up in a couple of days! I’m excited to drive it!!
I’m starting to see more people buying this. I’ve had this since last year. Thank you for doing this video Scotty!
I've been waiting for you to do a video on the C-HR!!! I love how they look!
They look cool but the transmission is prone to failure . .just an FYI because I had one and there have been several complaints
This CVT Transmission had issues when the design was new. Toyota has solved this. Never buy the first of anything... let someone else take that gamble.
@@jeeperwill6262 What year did Toyota solve the CVT issue? I test drove the 2018, and noticed the CVT issue off the line when I got a green light.
I bought 2021 chr limited and love it so far
Thanks for the review. My niece just brought a fully loaded 2018 and she loves it. Heck I was very impressed too. Moved up from her 2012 Yaris that was very reliable.
Just took one for a test drive and it was smooth, Loved it

I would not call this vehicle "punchy."
I love the look of that car. It looks friggin epic.
I have a 2019 xle. Bought it brand new with 10 miles on it. Love it also added some upgrades. Love driving it in sport mode on the highway

Hey Scotty, I just bought this car and Love it.
I am so happy! I recently got a 2018 Toyota C-HR as my first car. It’s Scotty approved!
Wow so the eco sport was that bad huh.
Been looking at the chr for awhile now, & finally got one last week! Lovin it!
I own one. Love it! My only ding on this subcompact “suv”, is that these don’t come in 4wheel drive. Otherwise, they’re nice but not amazing.

Maybe, in US no on knows about the CHR but in Europe it's pretty popular

I’ve had my 2019 C HR for two years, it is everything I expected, and the gas mileage mostly commuting is 32 mpg, and on a long trip more than 35. However, mine was made in Turkey, not Japan. Was a little nervous about that, but fit and finish is great and it’s been defect free. Also the adaptive cruise control, lane departure and collision avoidance systems are not intrusive but work flawlessly. If you are looking for a practical well made economical car give it a look. Toyota is coming out with the Corolla cross over so they may not continue this model much longer…

Good choice tad small tho

Hyundai/kias CVT are still better when it comes to not feeling like a CVT!!! No launch gear but they have the first CVT in a compact car with a chain driven CVT not a steel belt! So more durable and they shift just like a traditional automatic. No other manufacturer has been the same at mimicking shifts *yet* like Hyundai/kia. Reliability is still a thing we have to look at in the coming years.
Kia and Hyundia fall apart after 80k and become oil burners and clog up the catalytic converter, mechanic say it all the time !
