My first Toyota after Audi and Skoda and buying a CHR. Your story does not match complety with my experience. After visiting the showroom of new vehicles (Audi, Skoda, VW, Peugoet, Citroen, Hyundai, Kia, etc.), I felt a big "wow" at the exterior appearance of the vehicle (some new models are cheaper than used ones, unbelievable), after entering the interior of the vehicle, shock, disappointment and nostalgia. If we exclude the design, the plastics in many "leading brands" reminded me of the Yugo 45 and that feeling of plastic. I felt as if I had come to pay taxes, and not as a customer who is looking for something equivalent for his money, I won't even talk about the crowded lines of vehicles in front of their service stations. After talking with the current owners of vehicles of this brand, I finally decided on the Toyota C-HR 2.0 hybrid, because I thought it was the best and fair purchase within my budget. I received a 10-year warranty on the engine, gearbox and battery. In every basic Toyota model, you get almost all the options, as if you had paid for a premium package. The difference between the models is in the power of the engine, color, wheel size, 360 camera, auto park and some other things that are not important to me. As for the offer of hybrids, they are one of the cheaper brands. The quality of the vehicle can be felt when driving. Space in the interior for which I thought was cramped (that's why I have big dilemmas), it's not even close, the appearance is deceiving (after all, how much space do I really need?). "Custom" settings on the dashboard are excellent (it also has a tachometer, if does it matter to anyone), on the gearbox instead of "S" you have "B" with engine braking downhill, but that's why you also have a button for "custom, sport, normal and eco" and when you switch to "SPORT" while driving, I feel like a Jura-Dakar on the rally, as if you are in another vehicle (you have all 198 horses at your disposal and the feeling of the weight of the vehicle on the steering wheel) and you really have that feeling of sports driving ("fuel consumption, don't look") otherwise, in the open, an average of 4.3 for my driving style ( max130 km/h), city 3.1 l/100km. I thought that my experience can help someone and that not everything is as they tell you. Take your time and sit in any vehicle that fits your budget, to make a comparison and make a realistic and fair decision for you. I bought an excellent car with a 2.0 hybrid engine for 33,000 euros after a settlement with the dealer. Greeting
You should stop winging. The ACC is different in other markets. The audio speed warnings are disabled by default in Australia. The traffic sign recognition still functions. Fuel usage varies depending on drive mode and style. I have achieved 3.8 litres per 100 kms using ECO drive mode. The centre console divider stays the same for right hand drive versions of the CHR so, no problem for the passenger accessing the cup holders. The boot features four tie down points should you need them. It also has a decent internal light to assist with loading and unloading at night. No car is perfect. I test drove a number of cars before deciding on the CHR. My priority was safety systems and driver aids, driver and passenger comfort, above average multimedia system and, insurance and running costs. It is surprising how many similarly priced vehicles come with a lousy 4 speaker audio system. The 9 speaker JBL system in the CHR is definitely above average. Final thoughts, the reviewers comments about the all wheel drive system seem to confuse AWD with 4WD. They are not the same. AWD is not meant to provide off road capability rather improved traction and grip on normal roads. The CHR gets most things right but there is still room for improvement.
Glad I went for previous model. Agree on sound proofing. I moved from mk7 golf to last gen CHR. Big difference on road noise. That said the I love the car. Great chassis and drive. Sport model upwards i suggest. I'm getting 4.5 to 5ltr easy. Toyota app I find good for letting me know if car locked properly, windows open etc. I can't do remote functions on mine. Safety features might annoy you sometimes but have saved me twice. I went for last gen as I think new models normally have teething issues.
This must be the most honest review i have ever seen. You are right in everything. I had one of these for 3 months and noticed the same problems. The awd also is not very capable for offroading. Not only i don't understant how the let it on production but i am surprised how they dare to sell it on this price. The only think i liked in this car was the fuel economy but you need earplugs to drive it !!!
I agree, the only thing that is literally stopping me from getting this car after the test drive. horrible sound proofing, otherwise it would have been a great car.
Honestly this video makes me value my 2023 SkyX CX-30 even more. Small but not this small, spundproof, better handling, better HMI, and I can easily get 4,7-5 L/100 km on the road

Toyotas are way expensive in Finland. I never saw their financing at 0.99% or even at 2.99% either Renault, Kia, Hyundai run these campaigns once a while. The base model of CH-R (Toyota C-HR Active) 1.8 is at 35995 € Come September, government will increase VAT from 24% to 25.5% means increasing in price all over the board too.
Yeah no kidding, in Finland the new Land Cruiser competes price-wise with a damn G-Wagon it's nuts, and the Yaris Cross is so expensive that it competes with a Škoda Kodiaq.

I'd pay the price, if they made it quiet (and kept the efficiency). I can pay a couple of grand and add 100 kg sound deadening, but then I'm also paying at the pump. It's Toyota's honest reply to VW's dieselgate :)
Regarding the two "nag" screens on the multi-media display. The first one goes away automatically after about 3-4 seconds. The second (where you have to agree to) never appears again once you have set up your personal driving profile ...the one which auto-sets seat position, A/C, radio station, mirror positions etc for each driver.
Je suis francais j'ai acheté le chr ,et vous avez raison sur un point la sonorité, malgré un pare brise de haute qualité,le bruit du moteur est strident ,cela est dû a la boite e cvt qui ne passe pas de rapport mais c'est la contrepartie de sa fiabilité.Effectivement le chr n'est pas une familiale,les places arrières offre de la place ,mais point d'aerateur ni même d'accoudoir central ,ni même de poignée de maintient et pas de rembourrage au niveau des portes ,alors pourquoi est il si cher ,beaucoup de journalistes le critique d'un point vu intérieur,mais vous êtes vous penché sur sont chassis 'je pensse que non car ce chr offre une double triangulation arrière propre au voiture haute gamme.Le chr est confortable peu gourmand en carburant,la meilleure hybridation au monde ,et pour info le chr n'a pas vocation a etre un 4x4 meme en etant en integrale c'est juste une aide pour route enneigé ou faire du tout chemin .
When I was a kid, and that was last century, my father told me Japanese cars are mechanically good but they use very thin body metal. Not much changed since then. I drive a Japanese car and I have plenty dents. I am sure I will get another if I press hard enough with my finger. Sound damping, also something they never cared about.
My parents had various Honda's over the last twenty years. Accords and Civics. Well built and super reliable well into double figure age. Solid built interiors too. Likewise the Mazda's I have owned. Euro cars are fine for leasing in my experience but I am always happy to buy Japanese.
My parents had at least 5 different Hondas in the 90s, and they were brilliant (before I broke some of them). When I drove my first Honda as a motoring journalist in 2006-7 I was very disappointed.
@@jdmguy44 Honda and Lexus are good. I am driving a Mazda 6, before it Mazda 3. From day one I was annoyed by plastic rattles in the cabin, high noise on the highway which makes listening to music an unpleasant experience. Maybe there in Japan they test cars on perfect roads, but here in Europe good roads are in short supply.
@@artpan4376 I have had a few Mazda's and currently have a 2018 Mazda 2 1.5 skyactiv as a second car. No rattles at all and it's quiet/refined at motorway speeds especially for a small car. Sounds like you've been unlucky.
As always, a very practical review... I would like to add that the passenger simply has not enough space to open the glove box while seated! Design of the dash on passenger side is simply bad.. as Marek said, some things do make you wonder how this otherwise good car made it to production...

That boot beep still has my ears ringing! 🙉 There is a great offer for 12 month leasing in my country, so had to give it a test drive. The engine revs I might get used to, but the noise at anything but low speeds makes it a no go. Shame
It's got a better powertrain, it's got a better interior (at least in the front), it's got better (IMO) styling. Having said that the interface is still crap, and soundproofing is atrociously bad, which when you factor in the high price makes this car a second or even third choice. I'd go with Hyundai Kona or KIA Niro over this any day.
Not even as an option. I guess they assumed aero is so good it will blow any water off. And the rear is so high dirt will not accumulate on the rear window. I've driven it in the rain, and dirty rear window wasn't an issue.
i sat in the previous gen about 2-3 years ago, while testing other brands and models. didn't even wanted to take it for a spin, that's how claustrophobic it was in the backseats. this is a car for people that despise cars, but maybe despise more waiting for a taxi

Well, cannot say it's outright beautiful, but this one at least has a kind of form while the previous one was just something hastily put together after Nissan came out with its Juke. All in all, my congrats, Marek, a well done job.
Marek, to agree once with T&C in the Multimedia you have to setup a profile. Also you can assign a key to it, and every next time you will use your key or app, it will be used with your profile (all your setups, etc.). Such a great review level 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the info! I usually setup MyT (or whatever it's called these days) app, and was never prompted to pair the key with the app. In some brands the car's main user is often the press office, so my options are limited. However in Toyota I often remain the main user until they sell the car many months later. So I'd blame it on UI.

the Corolla is a noisy car too, especially the estate...all you can hear is the rear wheels and the 4 cylinder engine competing with one another for who is the loudest. I found the Yaris to be more refined
Allegedly reliable cars. But cheap plastics everywhere, lack of insulation, flimsy wires and covers under the seats and steering column, misaligned body panels (more often at the tailgate), and sharp burs in the internal faces of the front side panels.
They say competition improves the breed, but even with so many competitors it seems like Toyota haven't put in their best effort. If I had to choose I'd go with just about any of it's competitors, or an equivalent Prius if it must be Toyota.
I agree about software and soundprofing, but Toyota is not alone selling cars who is not finished. God example is my 2022 Volvo xc60 where it seems a comity has desided to remove everything they thougt i could be without. Gaskets around the motorhood , dampening materials in the doors, and the software who still is not finished and with a lot of faults.
Reminds me of a joke from years ago here in Ireland. What time is it when one Toyota overtakes another? Tin passed tin... They were always quite noisy and tinny cars. But their reliability sold them.
Then this is the perfect car for spies. It looks great, can drive silently, and if you're tailing someone to eavesdrop on them, you can hear EVERYTHING.

I'd say we can thank EU for this? Meanwhile in Asia, Toyotas such as Innova, Avanza, Fortuner, Harrier, Avalon, etc. are all top quality Made in Japan and cheap. Toyota in EU are assembled in Czechia, Turkey, Spain, expensive as hell... it's just not right.
What would stop me from buying new Toyota models: CVT ( I know how reliable it is, I hate it); no proper 4WD on all models in price range, only electric motor on rear axle (RAV4 only available with hybrid powertrain), software and driving aids. I wish for Toyota with proper automatic gear box (like in new GR Yaris), proper 4WD system and being spacious 5 seater. Bonus points for fixed software.
I love your reviews and AWD hill test. However, can we stop pretending every car with AWD means it should be able to off-road? AWD is primarily for on road stability in rain, ice and snow and has nothing to do with “off roading”.
@kjelllseth3960 I'd argue we could say AWD is not 4x4 or something along these lines. However there are AWD setups, which are better off road, than others.
@piglet5287 AWD is a big advantage on slippery surfaces, even when it's just taking off from the lights. Or when there's too much power going to the front wheels.
It doesn't need soundproofing because nobody ever drives a Toyota fast (except Marek when he's road testing one). Once-upon-a-time I was overtaken by a Toyota on the motorway - maybe it was stolen. I think I'll keep my lovely comfortable and quiet Jag going a few more years yet 🤣🤣
Yeah, it looks like they dragged it out of a scrap metal compactor just before it was too late, slightly squashed but still usable. It's a Chinese design thing , again ! Wouldn't go near this deformed flying turd. Nice review as always.

The quality was all the same. Toyota Aygo/Yaris is manufactured in Czechia, C-HR and Camry in Turkey, Corolla/Avensis in Spain, etc. Meanwhile Asia is enjoying the top quality Made in Japan Toyotas with V6 or V8 engines. Oh, yeh Lexus is worth it, that's why I went for Lexus and not Toyota.
I love and trust Toyota like many people do around the world, but this new CH-R is just ugly as hell but even worse it's made in China, so yeah I will just keep my '23 model year CH-R 👍
I haven't had the fortune to meet the Big Man in person, so I wouldn't know. I assume the C-HR would be a "hold my beer" car for him. "Hold my sake" would be at least something like the Lexus LC :)

You think the CHR is noisy then stay away from the latest Yaris. Zero panel deadening makes it like driving around in a very expensive baked bean can.

So Marek, just tell me - is this better or worse comparing to the first generation C-HR? You basically blasted this model.
It's got a better powertrain, it's got a better interior (at least in the front), it's got better (IMO) styling. Having said that the interface is still crap, and soundproofing is atrociously bad, which when you factor in the high price makes this car a second or even third choice. I'd go with Hyundai Kona or KIA Niro over this any day.
Is a wiper for the rear window now an extra?
Not even as an option. I guess they assumed aero is so good it will blow any water off. And the rear is so high dirt will not accumulate on the rear window. I've driven it in the rain, and dirty rear window wasn't an issue.
their solution is rear view camera in the mirror.
i sat in the previous gen about 2-3 years ago, while testing other brands and models. didn't even wanted to take it for a spin, that's how claustrophobic it was in the backseats. this is a car for people that despise cars, but maybe despise more waiting for a taxi

I'm filming driving and standard beauty shots next day after I pick the car up. The remaining cutaways are filmed on the last day along with stand-up, because I only know what I need once I complete writing the script.

I recently bought a Hyundai hybrid. It felt more solid and refined to me than the two Toyota hybrids I tried (CHR and Yaris).

Yaris still has older hybrid gen, as well as previous gen of CHR.
Try a RAV4. They are very solid and refined cars. Would pick a RAV4 over a Tucson any day personally. Toyota hybrid tech is superior to Hyundai too.
Well, cannot say it's outright beautiful, but this one at least has a kind of form while the previous one was just something hastily put together after Nissan came out with its Juke. All in all, my congrats, Marek, a well done job.

Marek, to agree once with T&C in the Multimedia you have to setup a profile. Also you can assign a key to it, and every next time you will use your key or app, it will be used with your profile (all your setups, etc.). Such a great review level 🤣🤣🤣

I usually setup MyT (or whatever it's called these days) app, and was never prompted to pair the key with the app. In some brands the car's main user is often the press office, so my options are limited. However in Toyota I often remain the main user until they sell the car many months later. So I'd blame it on UI.

So still no sound proofing at all?! 😭 And your "struggle" with the driver aids sounds like straight out of 2019 to me. I got used to them by now but: Easy to keep my Corolla then, instead of handing over around 40k for a proper trim of the C-HR. Too bad, cause it looks damn nice.

the Corolla is a noisy car too, especially the estate...all you can hear is the rear wheels and the 4 cylinder engine competing with one another for who is the loudest. I found the Yaris to be more refined

The HR-V I reviewed a couple of years ago was better, than this C-HR. As a car in general. Because Toyota has a much better hybrid powertrain.

@@tamascsirik9509 HRV is better. The Honda I MMD hybrid system is excellent with real world efficiency as good as Toyota's.
Allegedly reliable cars. But cheap plastics everywhere, lack of insulation, flimsy wires and covers under the seats and steering column, misaligned body panels (more often at the tailgate), and sharp burs in the internal faces of the front side panels.
Their engines are reliable, but you're right. In many crash tests, the seats in Toyotas actually break, this doesn't happen in Volkswagens.
No need to buy new as low mileage 74 plate models are piling up at UK dealers. I wonder why?
They say competition improves the breed, but even with so many competitors it seems like Toyota haven't put in their best effort.
If I had to choose I'd go with just about any of it's competitors, or an equivalent Prius if it must be Toyota.

I agree about software and soundprofing, but Toyota is not alone selling cars who is not finished. God example is my 2022 Volvo xc60 where it seems a comity has desided to remove everything they thougt i could be without. Gaskets around the motorhood , dampening materials in the doors, and the software who still is not finished and with a lot of faults.
I haven't driven an XC60 for a while. Maybe it's better I don't go down the memory lane :)

I'd say we can thank EU for this? Meanwhile in Asia, Toyotas such as Innova, Avanza, Fortuner, Harrier, Avalon, etc. are all top quality Made in Japan and cheap. Toyota in EU are assembled in Czechia, Turkey, Spain, expensive as hell... it's just not right.

What would stop me from buying new Toyota models: CVT ( I know how reliable it is, I hate it); no proper 4WD on all models in price range, only electric motor on rear axle (RAV4 only available with hybrid powertrain), software and driving aids. I wish for Toyota with proper automatic gear box (like in new GR Yaris), proper 4WD system and being spacious 5 seater. Bonus points for fixed software.

I love your reviews and AWD hill test. However, can we stop pretending every car with AWD means it should be able to off-road? AWD is primarily for on road stability in rain, ice and snow and has nothing to do with “off roading”.

yep. 4WD (or 4x4) is for off-roading.
@kjelllseth3960 I'd argue we could say AWD is not 4x4 or something along these lines. However there are AWD setups, which are better off road, than others.
@piglet5287 AWD is a big advantage on slippery surfaces, even when it's just taking off from the lights. Or when there's too much power going to the front wheels.

It doesn't need soundproofing because nobody ever drives a Toyota fast (except Marek when he's road testing one). Once-upon-a-time I was overtaken by a Toyota on the motorway - maybe it was stolen. I think I'll keep my lovely comfortable and quiet Jag going a few more years yet 🤣🤣

The quality was all the same. Toyota Aygo/Yaris is manufactured in Czechia, C-HR and Camry in Turkey, Corolla/Avensis in Spain, etc. Meanwhile Asia is enjoying the top quality Made in Japan Toyotas with V6 or V8 engines. Oh, yeh Lexus is worth it, that's why I went for Lexus and not Toyota.
