Generally agree Anthony. The compression doesn't really bother me on "Dynasty", I think it adds the to the grandiose feeling of the song. I actually feel "Comme Des Garcons" stands out more sonically than "Akasaka sad", though I still really like both. Lastly, I think the significance of Snakeskin as the closer is the idea of shedding and moving past all the issues and feelings she laid out on the album. Personally, I love this album and it's so far my favorite of the year.

looking at the other 8s this year, I think this record deserves a 9. I feel like its a cut above the rest, and with how well all of her risks payed off, its definitely a 9. Laura Marling got a 9 and while I think her album was great, it wasn't nearly as creative as SAWAYAMA. Even though Rina got a good review I still think it deserves a 9.
Laura's album doesn't need to be an off the wall , left field experiment. Why even compare them? They're both good for their own respective reasons. They have their own different goals as pieces of music.

Also yes I will compare them because that’s what happens when they are being given a numerical rating. When two pieces of art are rated in one system one will be compelled to compare them. Even if they are completely different.

Absolutely. I try so hard to live up to the expectations but the music review niche is harsh and critical. You can pump out so much well-thought out content but it's just never going to garner the same views as say, a gaming channel, vlog channel, fashion niche etc. It's sometimes discouraging to put so much time into so much and get very little in return. But at the end of the day, you do it for the love of the craft and nothing else. :)
There's no punchline. This is not a meme comment like the majority of the comments of his videos. It's just appreciation for The Melon.

Who’s Gonna Save U Now is probably my favorite track on the album. I get that the faux-live production isn’t to melon’s preference, but I wish he’d have given more of an opinion on the actual tune itself, which I think is earth-shattering.

It was super cool to hear a Beethoven sample in a pop song. Snakeskin has Rina singing the opening melody of Beethoven's Sonata Op. 13 'Pathetique' at the beginning and what sounds like a distorted sample of the actual piece at the end.
When you brought up Chosen Family, I got chills. That song has brought tears to my eyes so many times. I'm so glad to hear you give this album such a good review, I think Rina is going to deliver some great music!

good review, but XS is very clearly (at least for me, and for her as well) an ironic, anti-capitalist song. I think if you read it that way it makes the album more cohesive lyrically, bc Rina is focusing on her emotional connections on the past, present and future and rejecting materialist things as a way to understand who she is.
if anyone is doubting about checking out her music, don't. it's fascinating and has been my best 2020 thing.

This is my favorite new album in years, maybe since 2016 when all that great music (Anti, Lemonade, Blonde, A Seat at the Table) came out at once. Rina’s definitely one of my new favorite artists of all time now, I’ve been hooked for days

this is probably my favorite pop album since thank u, next. while it's not perfect or entirely groundbreaking, the production is immaculate and a lot of the tracks feel fully formed and lived-in. the incorporation of nu metal and stadium rock was genius, and it gives the album a nice edge to compliment both the darker electro/disco elements as well as the pure Y2K pop style. the fact that "STFU!" "Love Me 4 Me," and "Snakeskin" all coexist well on the same pop album is incredible. as a debut album, it's perfect as a statement that pop music doesn't have to be engineered to appeal to the masses and get the most streams, and that the songs that are more personal and resonant don't have to be the more sonically monotonous of the album. it's also a clear indication that Rina can do pretty much anything she wants, and what better message is there from a debut?
The first feeling when I heard the album is same feeling when I heard Born To Die for the first time last January 2012. Epic.

I listened to this album for the first time and loved just about every damn song on it! Major contender for album of the year for me. Blew me away!
At least he didn’t give SAWAYAMA a 7/10! Rina deserves more than that! I agree this album deserved a 9 or a 10, but an 8 is fine and his points are valid! I personally believe this is the best pop record of the year and AOTY in general! Everything about this album and it’s themes are just absolutely stunning!!!
But I thank Anthony for showing me her music in 2017! Without that RINA EP review I wouldn’t have discovered her music and just how much Pop music can be elevated into something unique and beautiful! Been a long time supporter of hers ever since then and i’m blessed that I got to experience her debut and everything before that! Overall, it’s a good review! I may not be happy with it, but i’m satisfied!

I'm a big Tool/Deftones kinda person....but honestly, modern left-field POP music is the most interesting thing going on in creative terms...imo. I love it.
This is my album of the year, easily.
I would say this is the best album I've heard all year so far, followed by Poppy's "I Disagree" and The Weekend's "After Hours"

I agree with his review and rating, which is still an 8. I still want Rina all the successes in the world but honestly with very few misses, RINA still overpowers SAWAYAMA in the grander scheme of things. But Im still very proud of Rina for meeting the expectations weve come to expect of a veteran pop superstar, she's made so much leaps ahead of the pack and she deserves all the success she will receive along the way.
