The TH in "aesthetic" is pronounced like the TH in "theater," not like a T. Almost every RUclipsr gets this wrong.

Funny thing, earlier today I got it in my head that I needed an infuser pitcher now and ordered one. I do like water but I also sometimes need a little variety with it. Second, I am not at all "that girl," I am a crotchety old lady so I have zero inclination toward a photo worthy fridge. I have been working toward a well-organized one stocked with nutritious food I can easily make. I do need to chop up the "stick" veggies on weekends so I can just grab them when I am slightly hungry.

My fridge is similar to yours in this video, kind of a halfway between aesthetic and functional. I decided I needed to organize it because we had a ton of food waste every week from leftovers and produce just getting lost in the mess of the fridge and the "aesthetic" of having clear containers and bins and designated zones has really helped. Our leftovers get used or tossed within a reasonable timeframe and we're wasting less money accidentally double buying produce that goes to waste. It has been extremely helpful honestly, a lot more than people realize. I dont know if I'd ever have a 100% tiktok aesthetic fridge but Im happy with where we are.

  • @HaloHighlightz

So glad you made this! I binged fridge vids then zero waste kitchen videos and back to fridge and realized there's rarely fresh produce and if there is, it's not much. Some people don't even have food, just a full-sized drink fridge with snacks lol. Like you said, mostly processed and packaged, exactly what I want to get away from. Definitely not who I want to be. This is "that girl" who eats real foods with space for leftovers, and is conscious of plastic usage. Also, you mentioned the plastic packaging in your crisper drawers. One zero waste content creator graciously said not to dispose of perfectly good plastic just to replace it with reusable, but to let it serve it's purpose since it's there anyway. You nailed it! Thank you for the inspiration!

So glad you broke it down like this, Kay. My fridge is a work in progress but definitely showing signs of improvement. My goal is functional, especially not wasting leftovers, without going overboard with the aesthetics. So the top shelf with glass milk bottles, a clear turntable, and infused water is about as “that girl” as I’m willing to commit myself to. And I do have plastic bins for leftovers, meal prep, etc. Your idea of respecting food has been my goal throughout this process. Your useful and fact-filled content is a breath of fresh air on this platform.

I added a sticky pocket to the front of the crisper drawers and put in labels for ethylene producing and neutrals on one drawer and ethylene sensitive on the second drawer after watching your food science video. The rest of the fridge is either grouped by type or best fit for the space. Consistency is the key to success for me. If I can find something easily I tend to use it up.

When things are pretty, like your egg container, it very much brings moments of joy into your day. Those moments of joy go a long way into wanting you to interact with that part of the house and do things more in that area, in this case cook. So I think anything you can do to make it so you want to interact more with your fridge more is good. Just make sure it is maintainable and doesn't create more stress, sometimes it is just a simple items like an egg container that makes all the difference.

My issue with the pretty plastic bins in the fridge is as you use things up, you’re then storing all these empty bins. And I don’t always have the same things in my fridge all the time. I have one plastic fridge bin only and that’s an egg bin. I use it to put hardboiled eggs in so my family can easily distinguish between the hard boiled eggs and regular eggs. That’s it. No other bins aside from the bins and drawers built into the fridge.

I used antique white enamaleware and square or rectangle shaped glass containers to divide my drawers and store things like lunch meat in deli drawer. I find these shapes untilize the space more efficiently in my smaller refridgerator allowing for more groceries. Also recycled old glass reusable milk jugs to decant milk or orange juice, water from local farmer. Again more uniform shapes helps. Prepping a variety of veggies for a "veggie platter" with ranch dip for fast healthy snacking is a time saver. I appreciate an aestheticly cute vintage, organized and eco friendly, well stocked fridge as im a busy mom and only shop every other week. The time spent organizing my fridge ever other week is time well spent for our busy family.

I have always loved your fridge videos because there are so many vegetables and nutritious foods. That is our fridge, too. Plus actually storing food in the refrigerator with food science to keep the food fresh, what a concept! 😉 The crisper drawers were not enough room for all the bulk produce, so I bought a set of four clear plastic refrigerator organizing bins about ten years ago. The bins are labeled (meat, dairy, produce, citrus) and great for defrosting meats and corralling irregular shaped or rolling foods. Additionally, we have quality glass pyrex containers for left overs, snacks, and ingredient prepping. Although I don't have all the newest plastic or bamboo organizers, we have a system with what we have had for over a decade and it is working for us. ☺️ So no need for TikTok trends here (although a pitcher with a lid is sure tempting now). Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! LOL Thank you for being the first person to say that "aesthetic" is being used incorrectly. Drives me CRAZY!!! I want to scream "Aesthetic is NOT a design style". LOL Anyway, I am a lot like you. I have a normal fridge, with normal food that I use to cook with. I don't buy a ton of prepackaged items. I don't care if my refrigerator doesn't look like a rainbow (no offense to those who do...you do you). I can't be a slave to packaging colors. My fridge containers are glass with the snap-on tops. I keep my eggs in the container they came in. The only plastic I have bought for it are two very shallow trays (one to defrost things from the freezer (on the bottom shelf) and another to put things that need to be eaten soon and leftovers on the top). I have a regular refrigerator (top freezer) that isn't tiny, but it's not large either. I wish it looked more dare I say, aesthetically pleasing...but it is what it is. I try to keep my organization to ways that makes my food last longer. That all being said, my freezer...the multi-purpose bins from TCS have been a game changer. Those...some Stashers and a vacuum sealer has made my freeezer a rockstar. And...guess what...I don't feel the need to have anything labeled (blasphemous I know). I figure if I can see what it is...why does it need a label? (Yes, I am the only one living here LOL).

It allows me to store something else on top of the container without worrying about breaking an egg. That used to happen when I stored the eggs in their styrofoam container. I assume your problem with plastic is the type that’s not recyclable and ends up in the landfill.

No. You need multiples of the same thing to make that kind of fridge look good and we just don't eat like that. I have basic zones in the fridge for cheese, leftovers, meat, fruit and veg, etc which I stick to. My husband puts things wherever he wants ie. right at the front of the middle shelf. A long time ago I decided that this was not a battle I wanted to fight every time I opened the fridge and now embrace that fun of re-arranging the fridge every time. It takes a few seconds and honestly I get some joy out of making things look right.

I have worked hard to move on from plastic in my home too. I believe ,,Prep,Habit, balance and mindfulness are the key to our best lives!! Its just not easy to make changes. Did you ever wonder why you can do a habit FOR YEARS and suddenly something disrupts that routine and it is SO SO SO hard to get back to it??? Very good video, I am motivated!

Hi Kay, I love your fridge. I am happy about your life change. Probably by now you already had the surgery and I hope everything went well with that. I love your pup. He is so cute. As for me, I have a problem with grocery shopping. When I was your age and for as long as I was with my family, I had no issues. Everything I bought was consumed. Now that I'm a senior, no matter how much or how little I buy, it's a problem. I buy plenty of non perishables, which means they do not need refrigeration. I used to buy once a month perishables and found it too much since I don't particular care to eat. I eat once a day. So now I have to buy as I consume so the perishables will not spoil. I know there are other issues, but the pinstres fridge would not work for me.

I have absolutely zero interest in TikTok or Pinterest fridge stuff. I do however want to have a fridge that is actually organized, so I am off to go watch your fridge organization video. Also, I LOVE your fridge! I love the drawers and etc. It looks so great for all of the important stuff! Especially love the meat drawer being on the bottom. I have had to dedicate a crisper drawer to my meat in every fridge I have ever had and it SUCKS.

Your homemade ranch dip looks delicious. I’ve tried homemade ranch recipes before with so-so results. I think I’m not getting a proportion of spices right and then the flavors aren’t melding together into something we love. Would you be willing to share your recipe with us? I loved hearing what worked for you and what didn’t in this video with organizing your fridge this way.

So, how do you store your cut veggies (carrots, celery etc). We're growing veg & always forget to harvest it!
Is it just water, does it have to be filtered? Do you know if it leeches vitamins/minerals?
Also, does it have to be in sealed jar?

    • @TheOrganizedSoprano
      @TheOrganizedSoprano 2 года назад +3

The carrots and celery should be okay in regular water for a week. I don’t think too many nutrients leech out. I learned this from Downshiftology!

I don’t have a TikTok fridge. We have a side-by-side fridge, so it is sometimes challenging to make everything fit until we eat a few things. I shop once a week, and it does help a lot when I prep the veggies as soon as I get home with the groceries.
We only have one crisper drawer, so I keep the apples in the plastic zip bag that they come in, and put it on one of the shelves. I keep the eggs in the carton they come in, because I need to be able to see the expiration date. We have a small drawer on the bottom of the fridge that is labeled “Deli Fresh” but that is my secret backstock. The two men in the house would never open that drawer, because it is out of sight. I keep extra butter, ricotta, salami, so we don’t run out. There is a drawer in the middle, labeled “snack pan” and I keep the deli meat and cheese, plus tortillas, so it’s easy to make lunches. It may not be the best zone technically, but when I put them in the bottom drawer, the don’t get eaten.
The thing that surprises me in most of the lovely fridge videos, is no one seems to drink anything. Our top shelf has 3-4 half gallons of milk, two bottles of oat milk, and two pitchers of water that we use at lunch and dinner. Hubby has a couple large bottles of lemonade and one shelf of the door has iced green tea.
The freezer side looks pretty good, because there are more packaged items. I try not to overbuy because we live within a couple miles of about 10 grocery stores, so I don’t worry about shortages. I can keep things more organized and use them before they expire if I don’t overbuy.
I need to get back to exercising too. I just dusted off the rowing machine so I can start tomorrow.

I am conflicted about all of this. I live alone and that is a whole different lifestyle. I have too much waste. I am tempted to eat out whenever I feel the urge. I think this all boils down to self discipline and that is tough to control when no one is around to “remind” you that the fridge smells like a garbage can and no one is there to help eat leftovers.

We’re best friends in my head. I remember you making fun of “aesthetic” fridges a while back and I instantly subscribed. And when someone said to me “it’s aesthetic” I looked so confused at her. I was like, “do you mean aesthetically pleasing?” It didn’t go well after that. I’m only a few minutes in and I’m over here cracking up. 😂 🗣Correct them please!

Kay, I love it when your nerd comes out!🤣. “Aesthetic” fridge. Unless there is a house of 8, those videos are not realistic. Who buys that much food just to make your fridge look like a rainbow? Agree, a lot of prepackaged food. I don’t want to be “that girl”, I just want to be me.

The aesthetic fridges are nice to look at - but wouldn’t be practical for us. I can’t do the heavy glass containers. I like the look of them and the fact they aren’t plastics. They’re too heavy for me. I feel too insecure handling them. Small hands, numbness in fingers on one hand, weak wrists. I’ve dropped them before. But, our fridge is organized.
Top shelf: beverages and leftovers in (square & rectangular stackable containers).
2nd shelf: milk, ice tea, bin holding cottage cheese, sliced peaches, applesauce, celery sticks.
3rd shelf: eggs, cooked bacon, bin holding drinks for my mother.
    Drawer: cheeses, lunch meats
    Drawer: fresh produce
Drawer: meats for the next few days plus hot dos and sausage.
    Door shelf-closed: butters, cream cheese
Door shelf: condiments - Mayo, mustards, relish, sour cream
Door shelf: sweet condiments: chocolate syrup, Redi-Whip, strawberry preserves,
Door shelf: salad condiments and add-ins: salad dressing, salad peppers, roasted bell peppers, olives, lemon juice.
Door shelf: pickles whole, spear, chips. and carbonated sparkling water.

I wish that I could do something like this with my fridge. We have a smaller fridge (that looks like it is a larger fridge) with side-by-side doors and it always seems that any solution that I try to implement, never works out because of the lack of space. Kay... It would be great if you could do a video something like this, but using a smaller fridge. I would love the inspiration!

I'm so not about that fancy fridge life. My fridge is older, narrow and small. The Home Edit type bins won't even fit. Plus I don't understand the need to do this. Your video on food storage science was brilliant and I understood it. That made sense. I had no idea that was even a thing. I like aspects of "that girl" lifestyle like the fitness/wellness components but the rest, no thanks. Looks like a giant waste and a popularity contest. I'm glad you did this. It was fun to watch💚💛🧡😊.

I am so with you ... pre-packaged food and tons of pouches and stuff ... not only are they easy to organise, they're most probably not even healthy. I do use clear containers, but they are clear because they are made of glass. I don't like plastic containers. They're not hygienic. Maybe, after having tried the "that girl" way, you might want to try the "Korean" way - that's how I store food. This involves prepping, cutting, wooden sticks, kitchen paper, wax paper etc. And, btw, this way of storing is not necessarily looking unorganised or ugly. The inside of my fridge is pretty 😁
