Welcome to the EV world. I’m just purchasing my 3rd. You normally find negative comments from people who haven’t owned or even driven an EV! Good choice. Keep up the vids.
Thanks mate! Haha I'm open to all comments, I look forward to hearing different people's sides. I was semi anti EV until I did my own research now here I am! The negative comments only drive the algorithms haha 👌🤣
Yeh im sometimes told by people who dont drive one what my car cant do even though they know ive done it. For example was recently told an ev would be no good driving from reading to manchester when they know i drive from reading to penrith another 100 miles plus they know last year i drove from reading to stavanger in Norway. And when i pointed out i could drive from reading to Manchester without charging the complaint was theyd need to charge on the way back 😂 Much of it is to do with them feeling they are being forced to buy one even though they only ever buy second hand cars and could continue do do so with ICE drivetrains literally for the rest of their life
I got a Dolphin just over a month ago, my first EV too. I've been considering an EV for a while, and this was the first that ticked all the boxes at a very reasonable price. I sold my Golf R, and I'm now spending what I used to spend in fuel on the PCP deal. I'm very pleased with it and I'm now an EV convert - I'm picking up a Tesla Model 3 to replace our family car on Thursday. All the best for your channel 👍 I dont get all the hate for EVs, there's a lot of ignorance and misinformation about them. If people buy the right car to meet their purposes then I cant see how they would ever go back to ICE.
Congratulations on purchasing an EV. I don't know too much about the BYD Dolphin so am looking forward to discovering more from your channel. I have a Nissan Leaf 30Kw which is 7 years old. I live on the Isle of Man which is a very small Island so don't need a big battery as there is nowhere of any distance to drive to. The Leaf is just brill. I love driving an EV and would never go back to an ICE vehicle. Good luck with your Dolphin. 🤞🤞🤞
I've had my Dolphin for soon a year now. Was my first EV as well and i've had no regrets about it. Done 15k kms so far and the car has had 0 issues. Easily the best car i've ever owned.
Great video, you won't regret the move to an EV. I've had mine since March 2019 when rapid chargers were few and far between but we had no show-stoppers on long trips, it just took a bit of planning. These days there's no problem finding chargers. It won't be long before the idea of going to use a smelly, dirty pump and handing over your hard earned cash to the oil companies will just seem weird to you. I've never bothered with a home charger, just use the granny cable into a standard socket and about 80% of my 65,000 miles has been offset by the solar panels I put up around the same time as I got the car. Driving on sunlight is cool!
@@benEVuk You may know that BYD make their own batteries and the LFP 'Blade' design in your car will outlast any petrol or Diesel engine. Once you are on the Octopus tariff you will save hundreds on fuel during your lease period and you will notice the savings in oil changes and other servicing too. By now my car would have needed at least two sets of pads and discs if it were an ICE car..expect at least 200,000 miles out of the brakes on an EV.
Thanks for giving us an honest assessment of your Dolphin. I have an EV6, which I think is fabulous, but am looking to trade it in the next 6 to 12 months, so am interested in what BYDs have to offer. You did miss one negative about the car, their products naming - Dolphin, Seal, Seagull, Atto . . . . I thought the Toyota bZ4X was a pants name . . . . otherwise what I have seen does look premium
@@morganbryan8045 no problem at all mate. Thanks for watching! 👍 Guess the names aren't to everyone's liking! I am very impressed with the premium feel and build quality 👌
Welcome to the EV world Hyundai Kona N Line S Owner here ! Range is spot on and charging infrastructure is getting so much better in the UK. Has others have said ignore those who slate and moan about an EV and their Owners.... It's in their DNA they don't like change 😂😂
Interesting video of a car that has had no long term reviews. The deal sounds very competitive and I think the car looks great! A lot of people are prejudiced towards cars from China, however as my daily runabout I got the new MG3 HYBRID (MG are owned and built in China by SAIC), and over the last three months it's been very impressive and cost thousands less than any of its European rivals. My other car is a Genesis Electrified G80, which is a full EV and I've owned for just over two years. This car replaced a Maserati and a number of Jaguars over some thirty years, and because of its appearance and design attracts a lot of attention with many confusing it for some kind of Bentley (Genesis head hunted the two head stylists from Bentley and the influence shows!), and when passers-by ask what I think of the car, I have to say its the best car I've owned! At over five metres long, I tend to use it for longer journeys, but at least at the time of purchase, living in a London suburb, there were several financial advantages of it being an EV - No Congestion Charge, vastly cheaper on street parking in Central London, although these benefits are gradually being taken away. As a luxury car, the refinement benefits of an electric drive train are perfectly matched, with some road testers comparing the refinement of the E G80 to a Rolls Royce Phantom! During the warmer summer months the range can get close to 300 miles (depending on how low you run the battery- manufacturers usually say the battery should be run between 20-80%), however as you will discover in the winter, you should expect to lose about a third of the range.
Thanks for the comment and interesting read about your story! This is the thing I can't get my head around. The majority are unsure about Chinese cars but seem to forget that whilst their cars are 'built' in other countries a significant amount of the parts come from China anyway! I'm the same with congestion charge. As I was driving a van I would be subject to a £9 clean air zone charge to the area I am moving too.. this was one of the deciding factors to give an EV a try! With regards to the BYD Blade Battery there is no recommendation to charge to 80% only - they say charge to 100% as much as your want. If you look into it they seem to be the leading manufacturer when it comes to battery technology (but I guess time will tell!). Looking forward to seeing what the impact is in the winter, I tend to just drive maybe 5-10 miles a day so hopefully shouldn't impact me.. but I was advised there is a heat pump installed which should reduce loss ☺️ thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
Greetings from across the pond here in the US. We can't get those here, because we have a "free market", ( BYD is tariffed out the wazzo) but I'm envious! Congrats!
The Dolphin deal is a NO-BRAINER. I went for a comfort model, and it was £269 deposit and £269 per month at 0.5% APR. Add a 6-year warranty and 2 years of free servicing. It's a bloody great deal. It's costing about 3 pence per mile to run and really is good enough for family road trips (size and range) as I too, live in the Midlands. The only thing I don't like is there is no light on the charging port. The central locking does not auto lock when I walk away (got use to this feature on our Mazda MX30). And finally there is no unlock button on the passenger door. Other than these first world problems, I would say it's almost a perfect CHEAP EV. Oh yeah, last issue is that China is spying on my how often I am using the local McDonalds drive thru. 😂 But that's a concern for MI6 (or is it MI5, or MFI), not mine.
Good for you buying an EV , I have two EVs an MG4 and a Zoe. I have no regrets on buying. You will find that if you, have the right tariff from your electric supplier you will save a lot of money on petrol. I have done a couple of long trips and needed public chargers, no problem at all and no queue. If you haven’t already watched I would recommend Dave Takes It On.
I am 74 and four years ago I decided that must have a go in a EV, I have not looked back I love them, now on my second EV a MG4, ice cars are so old school.
I test drove the Dolphin at Fully Charged London. Very impressed with the build quality and warrantee of the BYD. Charging speed is hardly an issue. It is not often you really get any delay on a trip. My MG5 has a max speed of 74Kwh. In the winter, with no battery heater, it can be very slow. 😢
Congratuations and I can tell in your voice how chuffed you are with it! How good is it! I had the same feeling myself when I drove my BYD Seal, just couldn't believe how good a car I got for the price!
Looking forward to your reports on the BYD. Went to have a look at one a few weeks ago, would have liked a bigger boot myself, I'm still not sold on Chinese after service / spares availablity. I would be interested on your energy usage at motorway speeds, I don't trust their stated range.
Maybe I’m unusual as an EV owner because I didn’t buy it to save money or the planet. I bought it because I like driving it. Smooth and quiet. Once you have your home charging set up, the concern about charging speed will evaporate because each morning you will get in a car that has a full battery. One of the joys of the BYD is that it has an LFP battery and so an be charged to 100% every time. For 99% of my driving I don’t need public charging and that is probably the case for most EV owners. But I am up front with people who can’t charge at home or work, that an EV is probably not right for them. We have an EV and a PHEV. If I consider that the route planning and charge network reliability is going to be too difficult, we take the PHEV.
Good for you for not believing the fake posts, I have a Nissan leaf long range and after 14 months I will never go back to ICE, As soon as you get your own charger you're going to be wishing you had done it earlier, Good luck and safe travels.
Nice no nonsense review, got an invite to a BYD open event in Sheffield this coming saturday which I will be attending, I've currently had a Nissan Leaf on lease for the last 31 months which goes back in January so I'm starting to consider options, the Leaf has been faultless and great to drive but unnecessarily big for my needs so want a smaller EV. Welcome to the EV brotherhood.
I'm on my second ev and love the experience. The one thing that people don't talk about is the effect that cold temps ( below 14 degs C in my experience) Charging speeds drop to the point you think something wrong with the charger or your car. For example plug into a 50kw charger with a cold battery you'll see mid 20kw . The second thing is much lower range. ( higher watts per mile ) That BYD looks nice.
Thanks mate! I've heard the charging rate drops significantly. The BYD can precondition the battery ready for charging and has a heat pump so I look forward to seeing how well that performs!
What's up Ben!. Nice video and great to find you here. I have myself a dolphin on order not a design but a jet black comfort. Hopefully I'll have it with me in 3 to 4 weeks. I used to work across the desk from you, until I moved up to Newcastle just over a year ago. I'll be watching anything you upload to find out more on what I'll be getting. Keep well bud!!.
I was ops coordinator at LFFH, I'm now a trainer in Newcastle. Your take on EV ownership is really interesting to me, as I am also a tenant and don't think home charging will be available to me for a while. Also your experience with different chargers and other options will be of great help. Have joined electroverse as I am an octopus customer, and find myself exploring zapmap. All still very early stages for me altogether. Like I said keep'em videos coming I'll be eager to watch and learn. All the best mate!! 😊@@benEVuk
Ahh mate I remember! Hope things are well up in NCL and you're enjoying it! Mad you found me on here pal 👌 if you need any advise with the BYD drop me a message.
Be good to see how the car is over the coming months as in your expectations and thoughts as a first time ev driver. Be interesting as a make that I haven’t heard a lot about , makes a change from the usual .
Exactly the car we bought, in that colour too. That PCP deal was fantastic, you couldn't turn it down! We had two faults when we collected it, but were quickly rectified by BYD Snows Southampton, which are not the best but hey, I won't be seeing them much. IMHO anti EV'ers have never driven one, and they only mouth off online. We've had several people come up to us in car parks asking about the car, most are so interested
Hi, I live near Southampton so Snows are likely to be my local garage if I go for a Dolphin, but could try the dealership in Basingstoke if they weren't too friendly. What is the servicing interval on these?
Congratulations to your new EV. I made the plunge last September and never looked back. Absolutely love it. If I can offer one advice is if you can charge at home even by using 3 pin plug, go for it. Much cheaper with night tariff. Just completed 260 miles round trip last weekend that costed me less than 5£.
Hello and welcome to the ev world, after a 2 t0 3 thousand miles you will be so use to it that you'll think you should of done the jump much earlier I personally been driving my leaf for 8 years now and no regrets there are so many advantages like instant warmth in winter and no need to warm the engine to defrost ect.. but most is Ardley needs of maintenance like costly brackes timing belts oil changes filters ect... so whish you to many thousands of happy miles.
I can very much relate to you in the video. It’s also my first EV. The great deal on the dolphin caught my eye (the deal I got came with a Zappi wall charger too!) and also wanted to form my own opinion. When you get on the Octopus Intelligent Go tariff it’ll be a game changer 👍🏼
@@benEVuk same here mate. A lot of car for the money. The only thing I don’t like is the “build your dreams” in the rear light bar, it’s a bit Live Laugh Love. Shame it’s not removable. I think they’ve said it’s going to be on the next facelift version though
@@jackoe5836 completely agree mate 🤣 just like live laugh love 🤣🤣🤣 that made me laugh cos it's true. Will see if they get any other deals on the facelift 👍
Hi, congratulations on getting the Dolphin - I've always wondered how good they are and the quality looks really good. I've got a Tesla M3 myself, primarily because of the supercharger network and the lower cost of charging at them when out on the road. I've not regretted once getting an EV and I can honestly say it's the best car I've ever owned (and I've had about 8!). Looking forward to future videos on how you're getting on with an EV.
3 years next March, I'll have owned an ev. Pergeot e208. Best move ever switching to electric and I'm 74. My next car in March will also be an ev, and guess what? .... a Dolphin. I haven't heard or seen written from anyone owning one of these, that they dont like them or had any issues. Far from what I've heard from any other ev owners, including my e208.
Proper nice car to be fair. The only thing I really dislike about it is the 'Build your dreams' logo in the back. It can't even be removed because it is undernearth the rear light bar :( Aside from that, it is nice/
Rotating the screen might knock your coffee over😮 seriousely the interior looks pretty good. Like anyone you will learn over your ownership what's good and bad and you likely have a tyre brand in mind when it's time to change. Not a big fan of China as a player in world polotics but they are a world leader in EVs. I didn't catch whst the purchase price might be or expected depreciation which is whstvreally hurts when buying any car and EVs in particular as things move so quickly in the market. Would be interested to hear about energy usage at motorway speed/ commuting and longer journeys. Cheers enjoy and good luck with your house purchase.
Cheers mate, came in at just under 30k with the offer. Same with anything new always depreciation I suppose, but worst case I'll keep it and just hand it back at the end. My fiesta van needed a fair amount of work doing to it.. and moving to Bradford owning a 'van' I was going to getting stung by a £9 per day clean air charge so it seemed a logical move! Range on motorway does knock it a little bit but I didn't find it a significant impact. I did a Leeds - Stansted drive and had to stop for a small charge on the way down and back. Cheers mate 👍
EVs will reduce the UKs energy consumption as well as CO2 emissions. Electrification in general will reduce consumption. The reason being the EVs themselves are more efficient but also transmitting the energy from generator to the car and into the battery is too. Burning stuff is so inefficient.
Well done ! How are BEVs not the future or at least a large part , what is the alternative ? We have an 22 plate MG4 EV and we have just bought our second for my wife , a 20 plate Zoe for under £10k with about the same number of miles.. what’s not to like? Be great when you move in and can home charge then it’s 2p a mile .it’s a great feeling not sitting in a stinking garage spending £100 odd quid just to burn it to get yourself about you won’t look back .
@@gk_yaalan I did indeed. Dealt with a gentleman called Kemble there. Really good customer service! Really enjoying it so far. Genuinely have no complaints apart from the few mentioned in this video 👌
@felixscamp cheaper than it was to insure my 2015 ford fiesta van surprisingly. There's a lot of different circumstances that can impact it but with the saving on tax and insurance over the year it's worked out about £400-500 cheaper, can't remember off the exact figure off top of my head 👍 (depending on what happens with this pay per mile).
Electric cars are the future because legislation says so. Dealers are fined for selling too high a percentage of ICE cars… We are in a period of transition, we all get older, young people will not know a difference
@@glenndavid8725 0% PCP mate, better to use their money than mine. After 4 years it can go back if I don't like at a gaurenteed future value. we're all aware of the 'depreciation' on electric cars. Cheers pal
I test drove this exact car, I found the seat lacking lumbar support and very unsupportive, the suspension was very soft and what really surprised me was the wind noise at close to 70 mph. It drove well and I liked the auto hold on the brakes. The depreciation is horrendous, I hope you didn't buy this new.
@@billywizzer1084 I did mate, compared to previous cars I found the seats are one the of the best I've sat it. Wind noise, compared to the D Max Fury and Ford Fiesta van I found to about this same... However I probably go on the motorway once every few months. Guess it's all down to what we're used to. Did get it new. 0.5% APR - will hand it back in 4 years if needed. Thanks for watching ☺️👍
@@benEVuk I checked on carguru and saw one that was 3 months old (1800 miles), it was £9000 off the list price. I accept the seats are subjective but it was a deal breaker for me. I hope it lives up to your expectations.
As mentioned I've watched a lot of videos on both sides. Got one to make my mind up. Must say so far I've had no issues at all and enjoying it 👌 shall see if/how my view changes over the future 👍
@andystone5487 you couldn't be more wrong. Best drive ever , no noise, good acceleration and clean air. As for depreciation that only applies if you sell it. I'm keeping mine. 3 years later still doing the same range as when new. You will learn eventually as your choice will be taken away.
I just dial up to Xi Jinping to confirm your doubt... and he confidently told me that China will continues to supply all spare parts even during ww3, and till the last Chinese man standing spare parts will be available, especially for you. Also he said that China will not start ww3 if America behaves and doesn't cross the line near China's border and neighbors. It's on America whether the world will witness ww3 or not, and not China.
One of the reasons I chose BYD! 👌👍
I was born in Bilston & I knew within one minute of watching, you were from my neck of the woods. Bostin' video ah kid!
Cheers ar kid!
Good for you for not believing the fake posts,
I have a Nissan leaf long range and after 14 months I will never go back to ICE,
As soon as you get your own charger you're going to be wishing you had done it earlier,
Good luck and safe travels.

Hello from Australia. Just ordered my first EV, a BYD dolphin. Can't wait to get it, although worried how it will handle our heat in summer
Hope you enjoy it when you get it! I'm sure it will be fine mate 👌
EV owner here, definitely are the future, for know are the perfect 2nd car
I think the screen is a nice touch. When driving my Zoe, the portrait orientation makes sense for navigation as you can see more of the route ahead
That is an advantage for sure! Sadly I'm mainly using Android Auto so don't get to use the vertical orientation in that 😭
@@benEVuk Ah that's a shame. Hopefully they fix that.
@@steve-zschannel2729 thanks mate! Got an invite myself to the one in York so if I can make it I will 👌 enjoy!
I'm on my second ev and love the experience.
The one thing that people don't talk about is the effect that cold temps ( below 14 degs C in my experience)
Charging speeds drop to the point you think something wrong with the charger or your car.
For example plug into a 50kw charger with a cold battery you'll see mid 20kw .
The second thing is much lower range. ( higher watts per mile )
That BYD looks nice.
Thanks mate! I've heard the charging rate drops significantly. The BYD can precondition the battery ready for charging and has a heat pump so I look forward to seeing how well that performs!
Pre heat on my model Y can take 20 + mins or more.
Cheers mate 👌 where did you work across the desk from me?! Thanks for tuning in! I'm sure you will love the BYD 👍
@@mariasnell6868 Look forward to bringing you content ☺️ thanks for watching!
Great cars aren't they mate! Glad they resolved your issues and you're pleased with it 👍
Hi, I live near Southampton so Snows are likely to be my local garage if I go for a Dolphin, but could try the dealership in Basingstoke if they weren't too friendly.
@@jacekkoczara1365 cheers mate 👌
Hello and welcome to the ev world, after a 2 t0 3 thousand miles you will be so use to it that you'll think you should of done the jump much earlier I personally been driving my leaf for 8 years now and no regrets there are so many advantages like instant warmth in winter and no need to warm the engine to defrost ect.. but most is Ardley needs of maintenance like costly brackes timing belts oil changes filters ect... so whish you to many thousands of happy miles.
Thanks mate 👌
Its a great start👌👍
Thanks mate 👌
Congrats on the purchase man.
Cheers buddy 👍
I got excited when I heard your accent! I work in Wolves and also own a Dolphin - but am yet to see another one on the road.
Ah mate! I'm from Wolves as well just live in Leeds now! Yet to see another dolphin myself as well! Thanks for watching buddy 👍
@@jackoe5836 brilliant mate! I'm loving mine at the moment 👌
Please consider on your road trips reviewing the various apps showing location of charging stops eg WAZE, ZAPMAP etc
Will do!
Great in and out. 👍

I wish you had covered the whole car and not just the interior. Thank you for the video.
@@Floridamarty check my other video 👍
Hi, congratulations on getting the Dolphin - I've always wondered how good they are and the quality looks really good. I've got a Tesla M3 myself, primarily because of the supercharger network and the lower cost of charging at them when out on the road. I've not regretted once getting an EV and I can honestly say it's the best car I've ever owned (and I've had about 8!). Looking forward to future videos on how you're getting on with an EV.
Thanks mate! I've been using the Tesla supercharger network with my BYD. Definitely the most reliable out there 👍👌
3 years next March, I'll have owned an ev.
I love it mate 👌
Proper nice car to be fair. The only thing I really dislike about it is the 'Build your dreams' logo in the back. It can't even be removed because it is undernearth the rear light bar :( Aside from that, it is nice/
Completely agree mate! One of the things I very much dislike! The positives I found outweighed that however! Thanks for watching ☺️
Good man, overnite charging will be a benifit , for me it’s 2p a mile , power to your elbow…..Brian
I heard that the problem with fast charging is that it reduces the battery life. In HongKong, they give

I really liked one when I test drove one
Love it so far!
The new update for the Dolphin is out today in the uk, I’ve just done mine
I'll check when I get home mate 👌👌
Hi, so how do you install an update on the Dolphin, is it 'over-air' (so no need to download onto a laptop or anything?)
Nice overview. Welcome to EV driving. It’s highly unlikely you’ll want to return to an ICE car.
Thank you!
EVs will reduce the UKs energy consumption as well as CO2 emissions.
Electrification in general will reduce consumption.
The reason being the EVs themselves are more efficient but also transmitting the energy from generator to the car and into the battery is too.
Burning stuff is so inefficient.
Hi, am I right that the Dolphin doesnt have auto-wipers? Odd omission if so.
Thanks mate 👍
Is the battwry 44 or 60 kw?

How much is insurance on this vehicle?
@felixscamp cheaper than it was to insure my 2015 ford fiesta van surprisingly. There's a lot of different circumstances that can impact it but with the saving on tax and insurance over the year it's worked out about £400-500 cheaper, can't remember off the exact figure off top of my head 👍 (depending on what happens with this pay per mile).
Where in the Midlands are you from?
@@dazt66 Wolves mate 👍
Electric cars are the future because legislation says so. Dealers are fined for selling too high a percentage of ICE cars… We are in a period of transition, we all get older, young people will not know a difference
Haters need to ask themselves, why is this in my feed? What is it I’m afraid of? Why am I so insecure?
Wouldn't a personal loan and cash purchase make more sense?
Bostin video btw.

It drove well and I liked the auto hold on the brakes.
The depreciation is horrendous, I hope you didn't buy this new.

@andystone5487 you couldn't be more wrong. Best drive ever , no noise, good acceleration and clean air. As for depreciation that only applies if you sell it. I'm keeping mine. 3 years later still doing the same range as when new. You will learn eventually as your choice will be taken away.
You’ve never owned one and are talking out of your bottom. Stick with your very slow and expensive to run ICE care.
Will the Chinese still supply spare parts when they start WW3.
We will soon find out I guess mate. Considering China produce a significant amount of car parts for none Chinese cars as well we're all screwed!
Surely it's an incentive to not start it!
Car parts will be the least of our worries
I just dial up to Xi Jinping to confirm your doubt... and he confidently told me that China will continues to supply all spare parts even during ww3, and till the last Chinese man standing spare parts will be available, especially for you. Also he said that China will not start ww3 if America behaves and doesn't cross the line near China's border and neighbors. It's on America whether the world will witness ww3 or not, and not China.
I hope i clear up your doubts. Now Peace.
