Yeah, I'm sold on this one. My first ev and it really works for me in Brazil. It's solidly built, good enough range, very efficient drivetrain and well priced. Boot is small, but I'll just fold the rear seats, as I'm usually travelling on my own or with my wife. No small kids to haul around.
Thanks for the review Paul, as an owner of a Dolphin Premium it seemed a pretty accurate summary of the car. We bought ours as a city/suburban car, a role in which it excels. We can charge it mostly from excess solar, and that soft suspension tune works fine trundling around town. Honestly, I thought BYD were never gunna loan you one for a review for fear of how it would look when subjected to the 130km/h Sine wave test 😅 Clearly not a car intended for that kind of driving, but it would be great if BYD got some local suspension tuning to tighten up the body control. Had ours just under 12 months, no problems so far - certainly worth a look as a city-focused EV, especially if you can charge at home.
You can double swipe on the screen to adjust temps and fan speeds without entering the menu. Also the voice assistant is excellent at making adjustments.
Yep, I have one. The good thing about it being Chinese is there are plenty of accessories available online. Things like dash mats to cut the glare. I also got a matte cover for the air vents. Pretty accurate review. Am happy with car. Was the best available when I got it. If I was looking next year, would go for Seal 06 GT
I didn't like it at first when it was released, but after seeing them many times on the road and I think they are quite cute looking. I especially like it in this blue colour.
I agree with Paul that all Chinese cars need local ride and handling tunes to achieve a better experience. I kind of get that because China originally had much better road infrastructure than us, but they really need to learn from Kia.
I for one like the Chinese car's focus on suspension comfort instead of being sporty. I will happily take a floaty ride over most modern cars that break your back.

I own a Dolphin since 1 year (30,000 km) and the quality is really good and doesn’t feel cheap for the most parts. The car is not a beauty but not ugly. It also depends on the colours. I have the light grey exterior with the black interior.
I think a key is always a good option. NFC doesn't work if your phone is flat/lost/stolen/broken. Basically makes the car an expensive phone accessory.
NFC actually does work with a flat phone, it can use a function called 'Power Reserve' on iPhones that ensures NFC works for several hours after going flat. As for lost/stolen/broken, not only can that happen to other keys as well, the car also comes with NFC cards that can act as backup. Why have the phone when there are NFC cards? Because you're less likely to forget the phone, and more likely to have it out when unlocking.
Hi Paul Just keep this in mind. You can change the climate temperature from any screen/app with a 3 finger swipe ANYWHERE on the screen. It is even easier than having physical controls.

Wonder what effect changing tyres will have on the Dolphin? Looking ahead byd will have to lift it's game when Xpeng Mona 03 comes to Oz, 615 litre boot in hatchback firm, 625km range 11kwh per 100kms, state of the art ADAS for $A27k in China.

Very good review. I have a 10 year-old Nissan Note and am looking for a replacement. Out of all the cars that I investigated, the top spec BYD Dolphin seems to be the best one for me. However, I have heard that there will be a upgraded version coming out with a 15.6" screen and will wait for that one to arrive.
Wanted an MG4 for my SIL, but it failed miserably on entry for elderly or incapacitated people due to a low seat and extremely wide sill. Not mentioned in any review. Bought a base model dolphin despite power concerns. Fine in town, and will do 80kph on max freeway gradient. About Yaris powerful on freeway. ADAS intrusion acceptable now.
I love seeing how cars do on the side waves and bumpy road section. No other reviewer has this type of suspension testing facility, it’s always interesting to see how luxury cars compare to normal cars on there too. Great video as alway!
My partner was keen on one of these, but we cross shopped the Ora and the MG4. Dolphin felt a bit cramped inside, MG interior felt the cheapest and had the worst rear vision (small cluttered window). Bought the ORA and she loves it, would’ve been nice to have the app like overseas markets as that’s really the only short coming.
It seems quite an inoffensive choice, quite quirky. Not a fan of the design (or of EV’s in general) but am an admirer of its more expensive stablemates. All in all, it definitely has a place in our markets. There are many who would prefer something else, but just as many who are looking for something like this that is affordable and capable. More choice, more competition- bring it on !
Base model BYD Dolphin is too slow! 70kW is way under spec, and charging also too slow on the base model. MG4 base model for almost the same price is a way better option for range, power and charging, even if the gizmos are less than the Dolpin.
Yes, they've already brought the Sealion 6 to Australia and the Shark dual cab is definitely coming. I'm hoping that they'll also import the Leopard 5. I'd buy one of them in a heartbeat.

It was a general statement.
@@GDM22 Cherry Omoda 5. Has both a petrol and upcoming EV variant. The EV variant reviews better than the Atto 3.
@@henrylawson430 Is the petrol version less than $30k, because you need it to be for your statement to be valid, will it also include everything the EV version includes. Also you go ahead and buy the Cherry over the BYD, which has established a significant dealer network in Australia and won't be going bankrupt anytime soon.
@@GDM22 yes, I can see sub $30k brand new Chery Omoda 5 BX for less than $30k on car sales with much nicer interiors than an MG4, Atto3 or Dolphin. And I am sure you could negotiate that price down to $27k. And that will have a maximum range of 911km and have a full tank in 3 minutes.
Hmm not buy Chinese 😅
FFS! Can someone at CarExpert please teach Paul the three fingers on the screen trick to change both the temperature and fan speed of the climate control. You do not have to go through all the menu's. I would have thought someone who is a professional car reviewer would know a little bit more about these things.
How easy and convenient 😂🤦♂️
$37,000 is NOT cheap!
Toyota yaris zr and corolla sx is already $39k, what is cheaper?
Not many cars that are cheaper
We need “anti-dumping” laws for imports of EVs from China. Also keep your slogans off the damn car please.
Guess we should also stop imports from the US and Europe to be fair since the unreliable turds they export to us is disgraceful. One good thing about allowing Chinese cars is that it will push legacy car makers to do better. I’m all for it since the consumer wins
Do the children in Congo mine the cobalt/lithium for the battery by hand in unsafe conditions?
You say that as if the Japanese brands have a humane workforce
Ridiculous unitilgent comment
No. You're thinking of cobalt, and BYD's batteries don't contain it.
Yes, and they are built by the Wegas in prison camps.
You sound so uneducated lol.
BYD uses LFP batteries. LFP battery uses lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material, which inherently possesses a higher thermal stability compared to cobalt-based chemistries. This makes LFP batteries a preferred choice for applications that prioritize safety and longevity.
Ban them
BYD ... Burns Your Driveway !
Bleed You Dry?

If it's your driveway , I'm completely ok with that. 🤡
