Jaden vs Dr. Crowler (Season 4/Graduation Duel)

I like to think that the reason Para and Dox played slightly suboptimally was because they are there for teaching reasons. They're at the school to teach kids to play better and specifically to use team work to overcome larger obstacles. If they played optimally I don't think almost any of the students could overcome their information advantage from knowing each other's decks and the lockdown from their guardian pieces, especially considering how bad the average duel academy student's deck is

I noticed that Jaden could have switched Defense Wall into Attack Mode with Spark Blaster and then attacked and destroyed it with Sparkman on the same turn he switched Gate Guardian to Defense with the same effect (Aster uses Spark Blaster 3 times in one turn against Zane, I'm pretty sure)

This duel has a few weird writing quirks, like why do they keep summoning their monsters just to fuse them, why were para and dox scared of drillroid killing gate guardian if the heroes would take damage and lose because drilloids effect was different to the game, why didn't jaden use spark blaster again to switch defense wall to attack and kill it. Still a banger memorable duel tho.

    • @MarioMastar
      @MarioMastar Год назад +16

I think early Yugioh was still trying to figure out exactly how to balance game mechanics with presentation. After all Pot of Greed is used EXTENSIVELY to speed up the duels because the pacing was a lot slower, and the summon effects were likely either because in the anime for a time, you had to summon the monsters to poly them (fusion was still being figured out in early days and I think they were testing the rules with them) or they were doing it to showcase the monsters and add some flair to the duel (since the spectacle of combos and difficult plays wouldn't really come until 5Ds when thanks to the nature of Synchros, combing was a larger part of making big plays so your tuners wouldn't be destroyed before you could use them).

Especially factoring the cards we knew where in their deck, what kind of misplays are actual misplays and not just cases of "hindsight being 20/20" (as if anime characters don't draw from pre-determined decks anyway XD he called Zane OUT), and genuine strategies that real players could apply to thier duels as the Anime's purpose is to teach people how to play the game and use complex strategies to get out of bad situations. Does mean most battles are rigged in favor of the protagonist, but still nice to know whether the opponent really should've won, just got really (un)lucky, or deliberately played poorly so the protag would have a chance.

Dox even says that Kazejin used up his effect's single use, so Suijin and Sanga only ha their one uses too meaning Jayden and Syrus would only get two more attacks blocked. After that, not much point in keeping the three out separately

TGS said that they could've attacked Jaden's empty board for game on the turn Syrus summoned cycroid but they attacked Syrus instead giving them an extra turn. and they also played unusually defensively with quickly ending their turns and not using the new cards they drew at all. so it really seemed like they were trying to give Syrus the chance. In the Practice Duel, even if Syrus destroyed Sparkman, Jaden had Warrior Returning Alive in hand to get Sparkman back.
Regarding Dark Designator, according to IRL Tag Duel rules, effects that specify "opponent" refers to any opposing team's Duelist of the effect's controller's choice. So Dox couldn't have chosen Para for that effect. Similarly, though, effects that specify "you" refer to any Duelist on the team of the effect's controller's choice.

I think Jaden was trying to communicate that effects will still occur even if an indestructible monster does not get destroyed in battle. Jaden must still pop a card to save Tempest from destruction despite the stalemate, so that lets Syrus know that he can barrel through Dark Guardian and go for Para and Dox instead.
He knew he could do this with monster effects on defense position monsters after the damage step because Drillroid did that, but the play with Tempest clued him in that the he could do things through the battle phase too.

  • @_Vengeance_
    @_Vengeance_ Год назад +3

I've been rewatching the episode, and as it turns out, the 3 Gate Guardian pieces actually have a worse effect in the anime. Their anime effect doesn't reduce ATK to 0, but damage to 0 like Waboku like they did in Duelist Kingdom as well (this isn't just a sub thing, while I don't really understand Japanese I've watched YGO in Japanese often enough to hear keywords like "damage" vs "attack (points/power/whatever)". Even then though, keeping the Gate Guardian pieces separated even if just until his next turn still would've been the better play as the extra ATK was unnecessary at that point so keeping 2 single attack Wabokus was a safer option.

In the original Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters story the rules for fusion summoning were that the monsters could be used from hand *or* field (as per the normal rules) but all the materials had to be in the same place. Hand *or* field, not hand *and/or* field like in real life.
This does not appear to be the case in GX but maybe the writers forgot it from time to time and wrote duels with the old method in mind.

14:50 Wait a minute, why didn't Jaden use Spark Blaster to switch Defender Wall from Defense into Attack, and then command Sparkman to attack and destroy Defense Wall? After all, Defenses Wall has no ATK Points and Spark Blaster can be used 3 times before it destroys itself. Jaden already used Spark Blaster once on Gate Guardian, so that's one. Then, he could've used Spark Blaster a second time to switch Defense Wall from Defense Mode to Attack Mode. He could've then declared an attack on Defense Wall using Sparkman, destroying Defense Wall in the process and dealing 1600 Points of damage to Para and Dox, resulting in their Life Points go down from 7000 to 5400. On Dox's turn, since he has no monsters, he would only be able to set his One-on-One Fight Trap Card facedown and end his turn. Onto Cyrus' next turn, he would draw Shield Crush. He would then summon his Drillroid like before, activate Shield Crush to destroy Gate Guardian, and then use his Drillroid to attack Para and Dox directly, dealing another 1600 points of damage to their Life Points. This would result in Para and Dox losing a huge chunk of Life Points, (losing a total of 3200 combined,) reducing their Life Points from the current 5400 to 3800. And on top of that, Jaden and Cyrus wouldn't lose any Life Points when Cyrus declared an Attack with his Drillroid.
    So, misplay Jaden.

I always figured for Syrus summoning UFORoid that it was due to how the Tag Team duels worked in the anime, like I think Crowler explains you can use your partner's cards on the field but not in their hands or something so that MIGHT be why Syrus brought out UFORoid first before fusing them? Because of some weird loophole thing of Tag Team fusions needing to have your monster on the field if you were to use your partner's monster? Oddly enough I think the same thing happened in the Dartz duel with Yugi and Kaiba where Yugi summoned Black Luster Solider out rather than just fusing from the hand?
Legit does anyone recall a time where partner fusions were done with person A fusing their monster from the hand with Person B's monster already being on the field?

Without using the Natural Energy Cards, how would you defeat Z-Arc in the anime with the following rules:
    1. Z-Arc has his main set up in the anime with his card on the field with 2 Darkwurms, his Supreme King Gate and Infinity in the Pendulum Zones, and Odd-Eyes, Clear Wing, Dark Rebellion, and Starving Venom banished, preventing Zarc from ever leaving the field by any means.
    2. Your card pool is limited to what's available up to Arc-V's run so no Links or Cyberse Monsters for example
    3. No Instant-Win Cards because that's too obvious, plus Zarc prevents you from drawing outside the draw phase so Exodia OTK is off the table

I'm starting to think that in the anime the cards don't have their effects written on them, and reading and memorizing each of them is considered studying at Duel Academy. Maybe the Duel Disk has programming to void the play if the card is used incorrectly or the wrong effect is verbally announced (like in Battle City when Joey tried to summon Giltia the D Knight).
GX is still tied directly to the original Duel Monsters. Remember the big deal they made about Ra's card text, as well as knowing it's hidden effects what only Marik knew, or in this series when they made a big deal about Chumley actually using Des Koala's effect against Crowler.

All the way in the distant future of Arc-V Season 1 Episode 15, when Sora is explaining Fusion Summoning to Zuzu, he mentions that when using Polymerization to combine monsters, all of the materials must either be in the hand, or on the field, but not both. It's possible that in the world of the anime, Polymerization's text does not allow you to combine monsters in the hand with monsters that are on the field. We see examples of other fusion spells allowing this, such as Fusion Gate in this very duel, but I'm not sure if we ever see Polymerization specifically combine monsters in the hand with monsters in the field in the anime.

I realized a problem with the note on how the useless attack was followed up by taking damage: if Jaden didn't attack, then he could have sacrificed Cyrus's card instead of Skyscraper when Dark Guardian attacks, meaning that their attacks would be equal. As dumb as it initially may seem, the attack may have been to appear reckless, leading the brothers into attacking Tempest and getting in damage while Tempest isn't destroyed. This is how Cyrus then realizes what Jaden wanted to convey.

Everyone played sub optimally... If everybody played their cards as they should, the Jaden and Syrus would've most likely won anyway by turn 18 and beyond...
The way the duel should've gone is as follows...
    1) Syrus sets Gyroid in face down defence and passes turn.
    2) Para plays Jirai Gumo and activates Tribute Doll to play Suijin. (He isn't allowed to attack.)
    3) Jaden plays Elemental Hero Sparkman in Attack Mode and activates Skyscraper to protect it.
    4) Dox plays Kaiser Seahorse and attacks the face down Gyroid (it isn't destroyed). He then uses Dark Designator to select Sanga Of The Thunder to add to Para's hand.
    5) Syrus draws MST and sets it, then sets Steamroid, then he ends his turn.
    6) Para draws, Judgement of Anubis (sets it in main phase 2)... then he tributes Kaiser Seahorse for Sanga of the thunder... then he plays Monster Reborn to revive Jirai gumo... he then attacks Gyroid Twice with his two Suijin and Sanga... destroying it... (In the end phase Syrus chains MST to destroy Judgement of Anubis, ready for Jaiden's turn.
    7) Jaden draws Polymerization, creates Flame Wingman he then plays Spark Blaster to switch Suijin and Sanga to DEF. then ends his turn.
    8) Dox draws Fairy meteor Crush... He plays Tribute Doll to tribute Jirai Gumo to play Kazejin.
    9) Syrus plays Drillroid... activates Polymerizarion to fuse Flame Wingman with UFOroid to create UFOroid Fighter with 3300ATK. He attacks Suijin with Drillroid, losing 2400LP but destroying it... then he attacks sanga with Steamroid (it gains 500ATK, which makes it just strong enough)... so Sanga's effect has to trigger... resulting in Syrus taking 2200LP damage.
    (Jaiden/Syrus LP= 3600).
    Syrus ends his turn.
    10) Para draws Dark Element... switches Sanga into attack and attacks Steamroid, (Steamroid loses 500ATK)
    (Jaiden/Syrus LP= 2300)
    11) Jaden draws and sets hero Barrier, then sets Clayman in DEF.... He uses the last use of Spark Blaster to switch Sanga Back into defence mode. ending his turn.
    12) Dox draws one on one fight, sets it... places Defence Wall in Face Up defence and then ends his turn
    13) Syrus Draws Shield Crash... he uses it to destroy Sanga... then he switches Drillroid to DEF and sets Cycroid...
Para activates one on one fight, forcing Kazejin to battle UFOroid Fighter, which would result in it getting its ATK reduced to 0 in the process...
Jaiden chains Hero Barrier... since he controls an Elemental Hero and the opponent is technically attacking (If Dark Designator can be used on your tag partner... then Hero Barrier can be used here).
    14) Para draws a mysterious card that will never be played (lets say Dungeon Worm) and has no choice but to pass his turn.
    15) Jaden draws Pot Of Greed, which gets him through to Fusion Gate and Bubbleman. Jaden Plays Fusion Gate... then he Normal summons Burstinatrix, switches Clayman into ATK, and special summons Bubbleman... he attacks Para directly with Burstinatrix, Clayman, Bubbleman and Sparkman for 4400LP of damage.
    (Para/Dox LP= 3600).
Jaden then fuses Burstinatrix and Bubbleman to form Steam Healer in DEF, then fuses Sparkman and Clayman to form Thunder Giant in ATK. He then ends his turn.
    16) Para gets a mysterious card, which is probably Shadow Ghoul or something... then has to pass...
    17) Syrus draws Power Bond, but it doesn't matter, he switches Drillroid into ATK and attacks directly...
    Para/Dox LP= 2000.
    18) From here on out it is unknown what Jaden, Para or Dox will draw, but it isn't looking good for the Paradox duo...
At some point Dox is going to have to use Kazejin's ability on something other than UFOroid Fighter, as his LP will be too low to fight back...

What about a Mizar vs Yuma and Kite analysis since it is a hand off duel & a duel without a definitive winner?

Imagine if Cyrus' face down was something like Magical Cylinder or Mirror Force. Since Dark Guardian can be effected by traps, something like that could have one them the duel anyway.
