*the philippines who were conquered by spain for 333 years:*
Which is /technically/ a while.
A ***whole*** while
a while while.
In comparison, the us is only 244 yrs old... Hhhhhh
For a while.... *thousand yard stare*
"Conquered by Spanish for awhile." yeah for like 300 years XD
HAHAHAHAHAH
You read my mind. That's why I said too. Lmao
I guess he doesn't know that USA colonized us too lol.
Philippines always getting colonized… and wer getting colonized in new ways until now… ;~;
I was just thinking how 300 years translated as a while to others haha but still love them. Lmao
People seem to think that they’re just paying lip service when they say that Fanta pairs well with Filipino food, but they’re actually right. Most Filipinos eat filipino foods with softdrinks and cola, that’s like a staple in a lot of meals and parties.
Coke is life.
*C o k e*
I’m Mexican and my best friend is Filipino, we are colonized cousins 😂.
omg i love that 😂
Omg i love that😂😂😂

Lol this made me chuckle. One of the few good things about the Spanish colonialization was how the galleon trade introduced Mexican ingredients to our shore.

Fun fact, the Philippines was also colonized by the US for a while. But the US as a country never seems to talk about it.
The US does _not_ talk about it enough. We kinda breeze over it in history class.
@@mirandabee2323 i question a lot about us education on other countries. An american friend actually thought that we are just a country of rice paddies, mountains and beaches. And he was wondering how could I get such great internet in the mountains.
Like yeah, there are no cities in the Philippines, we're all rural areas.
@@SustaJeno its funny that this reminds me of an old similar stereotype in ph as well among cityfolk who view provincials as being from the mountains too haha
I read an American history book and we were only put in as a foot note 😭
Philippines was hard done by the US that's why the US-Ph past connection is almost never brought to the surface. They left Ph hanging similar to what they did to Afghanistan. There's a video floating around RUclips which discusses how the Mexican-Philippines-Hawaii treatment of the US unfolded in the early 1900s. Hawaii obviously, became a US State but the other two ended up as their own sovereign nations.
With all the recent pinoy-baiting allegations youtubers had, i grew skeptical of all these contents, but even during the jollibee eat the menu, you all gave justice to the content by being honest with the food, you give critiques properly unlike others who only hype it up for clout. Thank you try guys. You make your contents educational i appreciate you going the extra mile of respect for different cultures.
Was there a scandal or something going on, I heard that phrase for a minute but didn’t understand it
@@thejudiblushow Basically some foreigners use Filipino culture to bait views and likes. Cos you know, Filipinos are known for their sense of pride in everything Filipino lol (pageants, food, culture, etc.), so somehow foreigners found a way to “exploit” that. Its like how students would “suck up” to their teachers to get better grades lol.

I SO appreciate that you guys have real closed captions, I'm a terrible lip reader and the predictive captions are a crap circus. The effort to be inclusive hasn't gone unnoticed.
♡
Facts, I’m not hearing impaired, but watching videos without CC is really hard for me (ADHD). It’s really nice that they add high quality, sometimes funny captions.
I agree! I’m hard of hearing and it’s incredibly helpful. 🥰
As someone whose first language isn't English, but still follows the Try Guys, I also appreciate the closed captions.
I’m autistic and often have to just cancel out any sound due to overstimulation, so I really appreciate this feature as well!!!
5:57 I’m Mexican and I definitely agree with Eugene! When Mexican and Asian cuisine meet is always an amazing combo 🙌🏻
Absolutely right! Specially the combination of Filipino and Mexican food.
@@Art-rx6qz well both cuisines have almost identical flavor profiles.we love sweet, rich, hearty, sour, salty flavors the huge difference is we filipinos eat rice with anything that can be called "ulam".
That’s what filipino food is, Asia and Spanish/Mexican cuisine combined
It’s funny how Canada (especially toronto) is such a melting pot. I’m Jamaican Canadian and my best friend since I was a kid is Filipino, so I been eating all these foods since I was a kid. Tacino, Pancit, Lechon, lumpia and adobo just to name a few of my favourites🤷🏾♂️
toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world!
Awesome to hear!

I am from a small town in Alberta and so so much of the population was Filipino or mixed Filipino, which meant my friends and I would trade lunches that the non first gen or non fob kids thought was weird with my Filipino friends and it was like a buffet of Pancit, Lumpia, Adobo, and various other delicious foods
Eugene drinking the vinegar is a legit ASIAN move.
yep
haha yes I do it too 🤣
Dude, I love vinegar.
Yo not asian if you don't sip the vinegar like its a wine. 😅

Ahhh as soon as my Filipino aunt joined the family and we got lumpia for every gathering, life got a lot better around the holidays tbh. Me and my sister are picky eaters and we just silently corner around the lumpia and eat way too much. And ADOBOOOOOOOOOOO
"I can eat a hundred of these things."
Most people can and a statement i feel most Filipinos support lol.
Becky saying that she could eat hundreds of lumpia speaks to my soul.
Oh yeah, 100%. My local Chinese restaurant has Chinese-Filipino lumpia fusions and let me tell you I could eat those until I explode.

Can we all recognize how great Keith was at carrying this Fanta sponsorship throughout the whole video?????
For sure
He got a lot of practice with his hot sauce plugs lol
But for real tho, every Filipino food is good with sodas (even if personally, I don't drink sodas often). Coca Cola has marketed that really well in the Philippines.
I feel like Fanta/they’re exploiting the Philippines’s ardent support for them by emphasizing Fanta as a 5/5 pairing with their dishes. Impressionable fans might buy into this like other countries the US has poisoned/exploited with soda. (Mexico)
@@famshars2389 I can’t tell if u r joking or not but they do Fanta sponsorships with almost every food video
I love how matt and becky are just in the back seat chatting while eugene and keith are doing the video. Like they are really just there for the food and I love it.
keith reminding them of the sponsorship reminds me of the person trying to lead group discussions in class
"For quite awhile" LMAO you guys are funny.
( Ancestors from 333 years screaming in the background )
Screeching like a banshee.
I don't think many people realize this but both Filipino and Mexican cuisine are heavily influenced by Spanish cuisine since they were both once colonies of the said country. Like, we have lechon and mexico has lechon too as well as what we call chicharon, which is fried dried pork rinds. That being said, it's i think one of the main and important factors why filipino and mexican food work together perfectly
Wow i'm from the place in Mexico where every Sunday we have Lechon and Cochinita as breakfast. Now I want to try the Philippine version >w
not only that but mexico and the Philippines actually had a very active economic and cultural trade during the period of spanish colonialism; the governing seat of the philippines was literally in mexico city, not spain, for quite a while. Asian ingredients are used in mexico partially because of this legacy (like chile de arbol, which is descended from asian birds eye chilis), and the Philippines uses a lot of mexican ingredients, like annatto, because of this.
@@ThingsWeSaidToday I knew that the Philippines was being run by a governor-general instead of the king itself but I never knew that the said person would be in mexico. thats a cool fact! i also knew about trading since it was really a common factor in colonialism but didn't know abt the specific goods.
@@paolakoh3472 We also have our own version of Menudo too! Ours is more of a stew than a soup but its a cool fact
I think it’s also fascinating to acknowledge it’s not just Spanish influencing the food with what they brought but it’s what the colonized people do when influenced. I know so many desserts in Spanish colonized places that use up a lot of egg yolks because the Spain’s missionaries would want the egg whites to mix the mortar for their Mission buildings and churches and you can’t let good egg yolk eating go to waste.
I do really appreciate how they're eating chicken feet, blood sausage other unfamiliar foods and not one person says "ew" or anything demeaning the cultures food
The people you guys talked to from the restaurants were so interesting and well spoken. It made the episode really enjoyable beyond just an interesting try guys video
Keith looks like the old grandpa bringing his grown grandkids on an "EPIC" roadtrip.

Keith is over here carrying this Fanta sponsorship…
*Not a comment on Fanta being paired with Filipino food, just a comment on how cringy the plugs for Fanta are in this video. I completely understand that sponsorships are a necessary part of most content.
He actually said "This actually pairs really well with Fanta..." with a straight face lol.
Everybody in this video seemed like they were acting to me. Nothing felt natural and the Fanta shoutouts were so cringe. The try guys have just felt off to me recently.
I love how they’re eating amazing, fancy, delicious food and they’re “pairing” it with sugar water and pretending to like it lol 😂 they better be getting bank from Fanta
@@leslie3933 I agree completely, it feels very off and staged since a while back. More like they are playing characters rather than being themselves. Sad :(
I love Try Guys, i think sponsorships are necessary to finance their company and allow them to continue producing content that we the viewers enjoy. I'll try to bear with these sponsored videos for that reason.

It’s such a good feeling to know you aren’t alone in this feeling 🙌🏽 For me it’s not Hispanic enough, not Italian enough, and too mixed to be “American” 🙄 I totally get you! ❤️
Nope, definitely not a unique feeling. Sometimes I think the first trauma inflicted on a child of immigrants is being born and raised in a country whose culture is different from their family. No matter how adjusted you are, you end up going through these self identity issues at some point at your life. I appreciate my parents for trying to provide a better future for their children but at the same time, I resent them for not realizing the toll it would take on their children being raised with a culture that is so different from the one they are living in.
Honestly !! I've always felt that I needed to be more grateful that I was privileged enough to be born in a safe town with accessible education (here in the US..) But I've always wondered what it'd be like if I was raised back in Myanmar. It's hard to connect with both sides sometimes, it causes kind of an existential crisis early on. They’re exploiting famously nice Filipino fans’ support by emphasizing Fanta as a perfect match. The US screwed over Mexico (skyrocketing obesity and diabetes over ghastly trade deals) + other countries with soda and now they’re capitalizing on the Philippines.

I am so late with this video (had a storm and wifi was down 😂) i am estatic that you guys tried filipino food and loved it! As a viewer all the way here in the philippines, this made me extremely happy! ❤
i like how eugene always recognizes the disgusting history that the other ppl r always dancing around. like when matt says filipino food is a melting pot, Eugene rightfully says colonialism and that acknowledgment and bluntness are required.
The Philippines is a melting pot before the Spaniards, Japanese, or the Americans colonized us. The country is the center of trade back then.
Actually, the Philippines being a melting pot is not really about "colonialism" or us being subjected by Western Empires, but more on "trade" between civilizations, including Spain. Colonialism was just a small part of what makes us a "melting pot"" of cultures and cuisines. The Philippines being the center of Southeast Asia, has been a trading stop for both India, China, and Southeast Asian kingdoms at that time so the fusion was already there before the Spanish have arrived. Also, the waves of Chinese migrants in the 19th and 20th centuries also contributed to the more newer "Chinese" influence in our cuisine, such as the "siopao" and the "siomai" dimsum dishes that got Filipinized over time.
No. Their food has always been something unique. They were colonized by the Spanish, but they take inspiration from a lot of things.
@@justherefor Yeah, and we had our own letters and words and even government, and traded a lot with the Chinese, Malays, Arabs, and other surrounding countries. The Philippines were also really rich with gold before we got colonized, since according to Magellan’s notes there were so much gold used for the decorations and houses.
Things I've learned:
-Becky is the Try Guy common-law wife.
-LA has a Phillipino town

Being a Mexican person living in Mexico, I've never had access to foods from around the world. We don't really do diversity here, unfortunately, at least not like in the US. So it was baffling to see just HOW similar our cuisine is to Filipino cuisine. I DEFINITELY have to try it if I ever get the chance!
All my love
Have you ever heard of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade? If not, I suggest you look it up. During Spanish colonial times, there was cultural exchange and influence happening directly between Mexico and the Philippines, broadening what similarities we have beyond the shared experience of Spanish colonization. Also, apparently many of the Filipino men on board jumped ship and settled in Mexico, so there are Mexicans from that area with Filipino lineage. I am Filipino American from California, and I always love learning about the similarities between Filipino culture and Mexican culture with my Mexican friends. We are very much primas/primos/mga pinsan!
You can try eating filipino food by cooking with filipino recipes. I suggest Sisig and Adobo. or a breakfast like Tapsilog.
Hehe the similarities does not end at mechado, adobo, tsokolate, and even banana leaf based desserts. Culture, religion, vicks vapor rub, our mothers throwing slippers like shurikens and ofcourse us being family oriented literally makes us relatives 😂
Much love. We are kindred spirits and practically cousins hahah
It really is crazy how similar they are.
I watched this video idk when and don’t know who they are before and rewatching now... I love this! 😄
Love seeing Matt and Becky not arguing, Haha
Love that you love our food ❤
Once you dig deeper into Filipino foods, learn how the different sweet, sour, salty, savory, spicy and other condiments and dips are used to contrast the initial flavor of the dish so you have taste counterpoints and combinations. Ask the the staff of a Filipino restaurant what condiment or dipping sauce goes well with the dish you ordered.
Next, learn how to (1) eat with your hand (usually just one hand) while using the other hand for your drink, serving spoons, and plate; (2) how to use a paired spoon and fork to spear and slice food chunks or to load grains and mushy food on to your spoon. No need for a knife.

It warms my heart seeing that lady give them Fanta in a bag. Before my grandma immigrated to the states, she and her family used to sell soda in a bag to recycle the cans for money. Now, she sews on occasion and parties way too much lol
I'm from Honduras and we do this too. Made my heart warm. Pulperias are like mini Market and they sell soda like this unless you ask for the bottle
The counterpart of Fanta in the Philippines is called "Royal". To my knowledge, there are only two flavors, orange and lemon. In the 90s, though, Fanta was bottled and sold in the Philippines but it competed directly with Royal, so Coca-Cola stopped production and distribution in the Philippines.
"Talib" is slang in Cebuano (a language in the Philippines) for female genitals.
the food you guys grilled are called "inihaw"! my personal favorites are isaw (chicken intestines) and tenga ng baboy (pork ears) :D altho i think it would be hard to get there, u should try it out when u have the chance!
I'm a Filipino planning to move to LA next year, and I'm honestly terrified. Finding out that there's a Filipinotown in LA is really comforting and assuages some of my terror.
Filipinotown is pretty small, but there's a TON of Filipinos all around LA. You'll be fine!
There is an issue of gentrification going on in HiFi, but the food is great and you can find a lot of homelike things. There is a seafood city and jolibee, along with other mom and pop shops
Im a Filipino from Canada who went yo visit LA 4 years ago. And yes no worries. Lots of Filipinos there! Ayos!
Just a tip, don't eat there immediately after settling but when you're really homesick and miss the taste because they won't taste "authentic" when you're still used to our dishes like they taste filipino but really weird. They'll taste great and nostalgic once you get used to LA's food
im a Filipino for me this is not a Filipino food.thats all
Keith is giving off “Dad that watched too much Magnum PI” vibes.
It's Daddy's favourite show.
He looks like Ed Kemper with that mustache
@@kaleighnicole5405 oh nooooo I can't unsee it
@@saoirsemclave1313 same. It’s kinda tripping me out
Happy and proud to represent guys! Keep flying our Filipino food heritage 🇵🇭 🇺🇸!!
the bag soda fact in Mexico and Central America does the same lol
As a Filipina, I wish you guys got to try other authentic everyday Filipino cuisine!! Sinigang, Arozcaldo, Pinakbet, Tinola, Pancit, Palabok, Dinuguan, Tapa, and so much more!!
SAAAMMMMEEEE. These are amazing and I wish they got to try it especially yung mga ulam. It's always adobo when foreigners try our food.
I'll go with sinigang and Pinakbet. Haha they would be so shock that a plant based ingredients would be used as savory dish. 😆
Same! i think these establishments are all filipino-american so i could see the strong american influence in their dishes. I bet it’s delicious but i’d also appreciate if they try other filipino foods.
Wish to try these someday..
I have such a bias for this group of four, mainly because I love the Keith/Eugene friendship and how they basically share a wife and a husband at this stage.
Everything I love in one video!!!! Filipino food, Matt and Eugene ❤️, and Becky and Keith. Thank you for featuring the Filipino culture. Love you guys!!! ❤️
Bring back this series please!!! ❤❤❤ so fun zach and maggie could come too
Keith couldnt be daddy’s favorite… so he just became a dad with his moustache and grill
HAHAHAHHAHA
They should’ve tried Halo-Halo, a Filipino desert that’s kind of like a mix between milkshakes and like a fruit boba kind of thing going on
Bruh that sounds so good.
-furiously googles Filipino restaurants in my area-
God yes. I haven't had Halo Halo before, but it's on my 'I need to try this food before I die' list because it looks so good! Along with chicken feet and Filipino spaghetti. 🤤
Also, I'm very much uninformed on Filipino culture and food, but it seems like there's a bit of a sweet theme?
Didn’t they have that when they travelled to Asia?….
Bless you for introducing this newfound delicacy to my brain.
This has inspired me to search for some Filipino food in my city! If anyone knows good spots for Filipino food around Melbourne, hit me up!
i love these videos where the gang gives local places some exposure. i love filipino cuisine (becky talking about how she could eat hundreds of lumpia, amen becky) and all of these places look wonderful.
