"Why is this fortified with Iron?"
Hi, a Filipino Nutrition-Dietetics student here. According to the Republic Act No. 8976, Food Fortification program, all processed food must be fortified with a vitamin and/or mineral in order to battle the malnutrition that is prevalent in the country. If you're wondering, why in chips? It's because they're cheap and most families can only afford processed foods like chips, ramen noodles, and biscuits. Just sharing.

  • @YumiFaeldo
    @YumiFaeldo 4 года назад +1400

    "Fortified with"
If you're going to eat junk foods anyway, you might as well get something nutritious instead of just salt, fat and msg.
Seriously though, malnutrition is still a problem in the Philippines especially in the very rural areas. Access to healthier snacks would is expensive. Thus.... fortified!
    Mabuhay!

    • @sinabonz8108

Yumi Faeldo I’m pretty sure the “fortified” is just a marketing ploy. I don’t think it has any real benefits.

I'm Filipino and I never really stopped to question it but! I have seen studies and how Sangkap Pinoy Seal Program (SPSP) encourages manufacturing companies to fortify (add nutrients that aren't naturally present in the processed foods) their food products to essentially diminish micronutrient deficiency in the country.

Some food are fortified with iron because here in the Philippines there are a lot lot lot of malnourished undernutritioned guys and gals. Fortifying food with iron helps lessen the burden of thyroid disease which is actually pretty common.
Other food and even softdrinks are fortified with vitamins too!

What a coincidence. As the 69th person who liked this, I gotta say... I just found about by my iron-deficiency anemia a week ago and got the doctors so shocked because in all their field of experience, they've never had someone rushed to the hospital to get blood, JUST because of such a low amount iron in the body. From the normal of 15-16, I'm a one. 😅😂 I dunno why that was funny to me, when my mom (who is a doctor as well) isn't laughing about it. But. Eh.

The fortified with iron and vitamin A part also helps those in impoverished areas to get vitamins and iron..
Because some kids arent able to afford lunch or dinner. Back then these chips were so much cheaper. I remember buying sweetcorn back then(different packaging and smaller packs) at the price of 4 for 1 peso.
So if the kids werent able to get vitamins and minerals through regular food, they could get it in the junkfood.

"SWEET SCORN!" That's an ironic punk band name if I've ever heard one. Also, I've never had that particular ube snack, but I can vouch heavily for ube ice cream and ube mochi.

피아토스는 한국에서도 많이 먹어요, 특히 학교 매점 인기 과자 탑5 안에 드는 과자, 피아토스ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ(초록색, 빨간색 피아토스도 있어요!)

Yes, and they tend to be more easily found in areas with heavy English/Irish influence...my mother loved them, but they were hard to find in the Midwest. Now I live in the East, and they're everywhere

I'm in the US and Salt & Vinegar is my ultimate favorite!!! 😜
I think I'd enjoy the Phillipino snack bc I'm always looking for the most vinegary, sour one I can find! Lol
