I’m a dopamine junkie. I seek it daily through running, yoga, mediation, playing guitar, singing, cooking, extracting all the juice out of life I can in the short amount of time I have on this plane of existence. Experiencing ALL of the emotions, and feelings and drama of life. ALL of it.

My boss noticed how enthusiastic I can be about certain complex, annoying, ongoing tasks (if they align with my interests) and how I would try avoiding quick but mundane tasks for the ones I mentioned until I had absolutely nothing else to do and had to deal with them. She is different than I am and gets dopamine by finishing smaller tasks several times a day, no matter what the task itself is. She offered to split our tasks differently than we used to, to match our preferences. We are so productive lately, it's wonderful. She recognized patterns I myself couldn't quite connect yet, I am very lucky that she was willing to work with me instead of putting me down for it.

I've struggled with this my whole life. I was told to bootstrap though and suck it up. That I was lazy and lacked motivation and grit. It made me feel broken. It's taken me years to arrive to the conclusion you're casually demonstrating here. I wish I had heard this so much sooner.

Tip to my fellow divergents, find a group of friends that you can explain yourself too, ask them to hold you accountable to your tasks. I'm lucky enough to have a friend who contacts me multiple times a day and asks me if I've done what I need to get done, then helps me get started if I havent.

He's told me that he knows I'm capable of doing what he's done if I just focus and delegate time properly, so much so that he's taken an active role in my life! Me and my girlfriend appreciate him more than anybody in life!

@@creamy_moon_xox Aw, don't worry. Somehow my family has no trouble in believing that I have it. At first they were skeptical, but then I listed all the things that people with ADHD are prone to doing and they were like, "That's 100% you." Maybe try listing the similarities you see with ADHD symptoms and your behaviour. And let them know that it's not a bad thing, rather something that will help make your life better if it explains why you may behave a certain way. Good luck!

Stimulant medication is the most effective single treatment for most people with ADHD by a substantial margin.
Otherwise (or additionally), physical exercise, good diet, zero alcohol, maybe mindfulness (see Lidia Zylowska's books on mindfulness for ADHD)... and maybe find ways to think about the 'boring' job that makes it a lot less boring. On the last point, at one time I found Covey's 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' great. Encouraged me to think in terms of mission and relationships. An ADHD coach could also help with goals, accountability...
      Anyway. Lots of luck.

I’m in a similar place. I’ve been an addictions counselor for 4 years and I’ve been unable to enter a master’s program due to feeling overwhelmed. Then i started dealing with chronic pain and medical issues which put me into a lot of debt. Trying to find a bridge job to hold down my financial responsibilities while dealing with a chronic condition is near impossible after being so mentally burnt out.
I would try a form of coaching like another person suggested, I just had my first session with a coach who used to do therapy and it was extremely hopeful and energizing. Sometimes us ADHD peeps just need someone on the outside to help us navigate our mental maze!!!

I homeschooled our son. A mini trampoline in the house was good, as well as a big one outside. Find his heart - ours loved building things, earning money toward a goal, roller blades, and buddy time. Use those passions as rewards for mundane tasks. Another good one was keeping a list of small chores, so when he would say he was bored, I'd give him a choice of a chore or find something for himself...really helped him develop his self-management. All the best ❤

No, that isn't 'Step One'. Step One is seek proper assessment and treatment. Stimulant medication is the most effective treatment for most people by a substantial margin. 'Content' like this sends the message that we should be able to fix it ourselves with the right set of lifestyle changes, strategies etc. etc.. For a lot of people, it really, really won't be that simple.

The best thing to help me study is get myself into a library with plenty people around me studying and that will push me through. If I am home there is no way I can be as productive, no matter what and it makes me feel so bad when I cannot be productive 😅 outside I get the dopamine from being around other people in a relatively unfamiliar space, listening to music (of course) but home nothing works and I will always end up doing other activities that bring me quick dopamine as watching a TV show or RUclips videos or reading a book etc. and then blaming myself for being lazy and unproductive 😅😅

But now I'm noticing how bad my ADHD is and I feel like no one understands me. I can't concentrate on anything, I get in bad moods, I feel burnt out and not ever feeling like I can rest. I have racing thoughts. I interrupt people while they are talking and feel really bad about it immediately after. You know I found a career in pest control. I made good enough money or I could stay at home with my kids pick them up from school and drop them off and that was enough for our family. My whole life on my family being with them my parents divorce when I was 10 that drove me into all kinds of drugs led me into the streets by 18 after four rehabs a group home for a year this was all before I was 15 and then my last program and 92 thank God it was a behavior modification because I needed that so I managed to stay clean for 32 years and raise a family been married for 25 been in the same house for 20 years even with my struggles, I still made it happen because I was super focused

Have any of you absolute warriors been on medication for ADHD, and if so did it help?

After getting diagnosed in my mid-40s I tried a couple of different types of meds and doses, and found Vyvanse was the best option for me. It does help, quite a bit, and now I’m (finally) pursuing my dream of getting my bachelor’s degree. I’d suggest talking to your doctor, so many people are seeking treatment now that they could probably make a recommendation based on their experience. If it’s not working for you request a change, there are options

I did map out my life and I’m better for it. My parents divorce when I was young so all I wanted was a family from 10 years old I built walls. No one’s gonna hurt me that only led me more suffering

Ok. So find that perfect thing and then lose interested after 1-3 years anyway and have to do it all over again. At least he gave us something else to hyper focus on instead of that boring task! Haha.

Unfortunately for me this will never work- there is literally NO thing I could be good at, that would interest me and bring money at the same time... 😞 And that my friend is called LIFE.

What if you're not interested in anything? What if none of those things intersect? What if you're not good at anything, and can't just go wandering around to find it?

I want help with this but trying to find it feels impossible. How do I remember this in the middle of the day when everything is collapsing around me? The book you were reading. Does stuff like that help?
